Can someone tell me how does a car gear lock provide prtection... Santro gear locks work in the reverse gear .... wouldn't pressing the clutch simply disengage the gear and someone can pust the car and decamp with it???

It simply protects the car as you cannot drive it in reverse gear.Yes you can push the car by pressing the clutch. But it makes the task difficult to flick the car.

My personal opinion steering lock is better/convenient/cheaper than gear locks.

Personally feel the steering lock/and the brakes(which has to be on) should also be protected by a id code on the dedicated car key(like the engine-in the immobilizer).

Dont think the same can be a big technological hurdle.

The other option would be to buy a merc with a biometric accesses !

yup. That way the thieves will have to lift the car and turn 'manually'. This requires four people ;)
