I’m located in Bangalore and planning to sell my Swift Zxi (2006) and go for any diesel (used) in C+/D segment, with a maximum budget of 8lakhs. After reviewing for couple of months, I have short-listed following cars for replacing my Swift Zxi:

  1. Sonata Embera CRDi – good power & features but rare to find in used car market
  2. Octavia TDI – good fuel efficiency & features but high maintenance cost
  3. Optra Magnum TDCI – good power & fuel efficiency

When it comes to reality, option 3 seems to be a wise choice but is it worth replacing Swift Zxi (2006) to Magnum TDCI (2007)? Or do I have any better option for my budget?

Dear Manu, the cars you have shortlisted are very expensive to maintain.I recommend you to buy a new diesel C segment car like Verna,Fiesta,Linea etc.But if you still want to buy a used car from your list,Optra magnum is the one for you.Skoda is too expensive to maintain. But if you can find the embera you can go ahead with it.

Thanks for your response, Omkar.

I thought Magnum would be cheaper to maintain. Can any one plaese mention the average  maintenance cost of Magnum TDCI?

From Swift to Verna/Fiesta/Linea? Will that be an upgrade?

Used diesel + BEST choice = Elantra CRDi.  Space, economy, power, handling, spares and support - you name it, its got it.

It really is a killer deal in the used market with excellent low-mileage options available at around 5 lakhs.  If I were in the market for a 2nd hand diesel, THIS is what I'd go for blindfolded.

Of course, you have to be slightly blind to live with its unconventional looks.

I forgot to mention ElantraEmbarassed Thanks Steeroid for mentioning it.Yes Elantra is simply brillant machine and comes at a very low price.

@manu

Optra magnum's mantainance is not too high compared to skoda.Optra magnum has got some serious performance. The only problem with magnum is that the clutch is a bit heavy.

@ manu, if secondhand than optra magnum is the car to go for. it is a great car with lots of performance, space & comfort. it is not at all hard to maintain. if u go for the new linea than offcourse it will be called a upgrade as swift is a small car & linea is a bigger car & a sedan. now the choice is urs either new or secondhand. can u plz tell the details of the magnum u have found?

8 lakh is a pretty good money to hunt for a new diesel car...

Considering the fact that Diesel engines have a short life span, owing to the ownerships it changes and people do get them replaced with a new one once they had a fair deal of run from it...

I would suggest not to go for a second hand diesel,Prefer a petrol second hand if you still need one...

A second hand diesel will eat away all your savings for the maintenance and time it rquires[frequent maintenance]

I feel you have a better look at the market and find one suitable new diesel car for yourself...You might want a big elephant for 8 lakhs, but is it worth spending all that in somethign which will always demand money [maintenance]

I also feel,LINEA diesel is a good option and will surely meet your rquirements...

The segment we are talking here has only two lead contenders...

1.Suzuki

2.Fiat

Apart from these ,the other players are higher up in hierchy...[So called brand and value for their products]

I would not forfeit the idea of buying a piece of shiny metal[second hand junk] for 8 lakhs...

Go for a more Value for money...

LINEA fits in...

Do reply what you feel!!!

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Wow! Excellent response, thanks a lot for your time & effort.

@ Steeroid

I think Elantra is a bit outdated and not in production as well.

@ Roadster

I haven’t found anything apart from the ones listed in this site.

@ Bhardwaj

Yes, Linea seems to be a better choice.

@ Dr.Abyshines

Very informative write-up. Let me do some reviews on Linea before I post any comment on it. I was under the impression that Linea is underpowered.
