Hyundai Getz Diesel (CRDi)
January 16, 2007 – 3:53 pm by Banwari Lal Sharma
When to expect: Launched
Estimated Price: Rs.5-6 Lakh
Getz would be economical now. And more powerful too. 1.5L CRDi engine (yes, the same that is found in Accent CRDi) will produce 88ps of power and 215Nm of torque. Car is expected to give 13-14 kmpl in city driving and close to 20 kmpl on highways. Yes, you got it right, it would be as economical as Indica as far as fuel prices are concerned. If you think, Getz drinks a lot, it’s time to change your views.
Price is expected to be 50,000-75,000 rupees higher than Getz Petrol. Price seems justified if we ignore the fact that Petrol Getz is still expensive no matter how many and how much price-cut(s) have occured so far.
Quick Facts
Car Segment/Body style: Small Car/Premium Hatchback
Fuel Type: Diesel
Engine: 1.5L (1493cc), 4-cylinder CRDi Diesel
Max Power/Torque: 88ps/215Nm
Dimensions (LxWxH): 3810×1665x1515 mm
Carwale Expects: Getz’s economical and more powerful version. Ideal for those who like Getz Petrol but are reluctant due to fuel expenses. We are worried about buying cost!

Earlier you had mentioned launch date as Feb-07. Now you have changed it to March-April-07. Now with latest comments from Hyundai during launch of Sonata Diesel, that Getz would have new CRDi engine of 1.2 or 1.3L not the Accent’s 1.5L CRDI engine you have mentioned here.
I request Carwale to get and post accurate data of Getz CRDi so that, we can make get correct information.
By Banadesh on Jan 16, 2007
Banadesh,
Hyundai is not ready to unveil anything as of now. Getz Diesel may have a 1.2L, 1.3L, 1.4L or 1.5L engine. However 1.3L and 1.5L are more likely to be placed under the hood. Hyundai was about to launch it in February only but the launch has just got delayed by at least two months. We are not sure about it too, unfortunately!

Dear Banwari,
Thank you so much for responding so early and accuratly.
I asked it because,I have decided to buy premium CRDi hatch, which has good looks, good interior space, good mileage and which generate adequate power and torque which makes the car very sporty. And I want to buy before May-07.
So its between Swift and Getz,(I prefer Getz).
We know the launch of Swift but not Getz, that is why I wanted to know about Getz launch from ever reliable Carwale team.
Can you also suggest which diesel is better, Getz or the Swift for my above requirements.
By Banadesh on Jan 17, 2007
As far as Swift/Getz comparison is concerned, I am inclined towards Swift for its looks, engine performance and Maruti badge. Getz has advantage in terms of space though.
So if you ask me which of the two, my suggestion would be Swift Diesel as of now. If you are looking for space for 4 adults then it’s definitely not for you.
Swift is coming this month only, this will prompt Hyundai people to launch Getz as soon as possible and I am pretty much sure they will try to keep the car a bit higher on performance numbers. We can expect Getz till April this year.
By Banwari on Jan 19, 2007
Mr. Bnwari,
With a massive 88 bhp that the new Getz CRDi is xpected to deliever, there remains no more space to rethink b/w the two cars.
Additionally, the premium hatchback from hyundai is a practical car, unlike the toy from maruti-suzuki.
Interiors are so much cramped…..
Stylling is too very good when one reminds the getz.
Build quality is another upperhand.
In other words, when we think about cars with diesel engine under the bonnet, the first thing that trikes, ehhhhhh,,,, its a diesel, diesel means low refinement levels, lesser response frm the motor etc.
We should be thankful to Hyundai for the technelogies like CRDi that provides the feel of petrol to the driver.
These are the facts, not just it is me, who thinks so.
If u pls send me a reply via e-mail(its.ashishsharma@gmail.com), i will be thankful to u.
By Ashish on Jan 19, 2007
Ashish,
As far as practicality is concerned, you cannot declare one car as impractical just because it has a little less space and another car can’t be practical just because of more space. Swift is a very decent hatchback for any small family, has enough space at front. Good pricing, good resale, fuel economy and Maruti’s impeccable after-sales-services make it an obvious choice for anyone. Styling? Well, its personal thing but Swift’s sales and buyers’ enthusiasm for it has proved Swift more stylish than Getz.
As far as Getz is concerned, I am not convinced with the price in the first place. Petrol engine is far behind in performance when it comes to comparison with Swift Petrol. 88bhp figure is cool but even Hyundai guys are not sure if they will house the same engine due to small-car tax constraints. Swift has left Getz far behind already, now if Hyundai doesn’t think practical on price part of Getz Diesel, they will have to pay a huge price for it.
CRDi? It’s not just Getz that has Common Rail (CRDi) engine, Swift Diesel too has got similar fantastic Common Rail Diesel technology. So, no sweat in this regard.

Constructive debates always brings the best bottomline.
Thanks for doing that. Now trying to be a moderator,
Getz:-
Plus:
Superb built/ride quality,Good interior/space,Good Euro styling.
Cons:
Little high on price, very bad marketing by Hyundai.
Swift:-
Plus:
Maruti brand,Good pricing,Great marketing.
Cons:
Not a great built/ride quality,Less interior space.
Getz is superior premium hatch but Swift succeeded in the Indian market because of the smart marketing and brand image of Maruti.
In fact, in many other countries like South Africa,Australia,Newzealand,UK etc Getz has more sales number.
Any rational thinking would vote for Getz.
But great Maruti marketing captured imagination and sentiments of Indian people which enticed them to buy Swift and made it a grand sucess.
By Banadesh on Jan 22, 2007
Banadesh,
Your comments for Swift are making it an only-hype-no-substance car which is not true by any means. Apart from pricing, Maruti badge, good marketing, Swift has got a very promising engine that you tend to omit from the scene. Interior-space is less but quality is definitely superior to Getz. Swift had some issues like door-rattling etc which were fixed after a couple of months of its launch. I personally don’t find Swift’s build-quality as bad. Swift might be too trendy for some people but it has got better styling than the opponent in the question, ironically Getz has got quite elegant looks for sure. Swift’s packaging is very good too, at every trim-level, you get really considerable features. Swift LXi seems to be adequate for your requirements while ZXi seems complete in one sense with very intelligent features like ABS, Airbags, Alloy wheels, HVAC etc.
Don’t give a damn to rumors/novice-reviews, do a good research and you will find a good car for you. I well remember few people airing ‘Getz gives a mileage of 6-7 in city’ sometime ago. It’s noise actually, extract good things out of such reviews and move ahead with your research.
I say again, Getz is for people seeking space/comfort and Swift for people seeking power/style/economy.

i need one diesel car urgently shall i go for swift diesel or tata indica turbo i am not able to decide which vehicle to choose so pls suggest me a vehicle which is less in price which has fuel economy and compare the features and find me a good car
By chandrashekar on Jan 25, 2007
don go for indica turbo
it has the low tech diesel engine which produces sound and vibration
indica and getz will be coming up with their CRDi diesel engines soon… better wait for them if u want more space and boot….
if space and boot is not ur consideration…. i strongly recommand u to go forward anf buy swift diesel…. it has a very impressive diesel engine with the latest technology…
By red devil on Jan 26, 2007
Just a side note to Hyundai being thanked for introducing the CRDi technology to Diesel. Hyundai does not develop its own CRDi engines, at least not until last year. Most of their engines are designed by a company called Detroit Diesels. These diesel vehicles are expensive because of the royalty component Hyundai would have to pay the original inventors and patent holders (Fiat, Densu, etc)

Hey all,
Thank you all for your valueable feeds back’s and debate majorly between Getz and Swift. Unfortunately i m still confused as even i m planning for a diesel car. i have good faith in swift diesel as per the spec are concerned, to all’z suprise i would like to add Fiat Palio on the race too … Can any of my friends out here help me choosing the perfect vehicle for me … i dont need it for a big family, its a 1 - 2 person’s car; i love speed and a better fuel efficiency { if not the best; expecting around 18kmpl in city … was that too much
} , quick responses would be apprieciated; Happy and healthy debate to all viewers out here.
By Naresh on Jan 30, 2007
If time is not a constriant for you, wait for Getz CRDi and Palio or Punto by Fiat. Then you should be able assess better.
See Maruti is so smart in marketing. In Europe, there thousands for car magazines and only one rated Swift(Fiat’s) diesel engine as good and now they made great selling point in India.
I can assure you that, Fiat’s Punto’s engine is different/superior than Swift engine which also happens to be supplied by Fiat.Swift diesel engine is a generation old which has fixed geometry turbocharger.
I am sure good tech people would say that Swift’s engine is noisier than what it should be as it is old generation crdi. I saw Car and Bike show NDTV last Sunday and they also claimed the same .
Look at Hyundai CRDi with VGT(Variable geometry turbocharger), that are contemprory technology. So my suggestion to wait for Getz,Palio,Punto. Then assess by yourself without going by selling material used by companies. And whichever satisfies your need(Like power, space, mileage etc.) and then make buying decision.

WILL THERE BE A SMALL DIESEL CAR WHICH HAS
1 GOT SUFFICIENT SPACE FOR 4
2 ROBUST AND NOISELESS
3 WITH 60 BSP
4 CAN DELIVER 25 KM/LT IN CITY AND 33 KM/LT
IN HIGHWAY
ANY CO DEVELOPING THAT ?
By SURESH on Feb 5, 2007
‘4 CAN DELIVER 25 KM/LT IN CITY AND 33 KM/LT
IN HIGHWAY’
This is a bit abitious
i think swift diesel qualifies for the first 3 condition
By red devil on Feb 5, 2007
Fiat’s engine in the Punto appears far better at least from the European Specifications. They would have licenced out an earlier version to Maruti under the understanding that there would be no negative marketing on Fiat’s part once they came to India with the Punto. Also Fiat is one of the few original licence holders to the CRDi tech and pay no royalty fees on them.
I would be surprised if Hyundai did not announce at least one of these two
1. A facelift to the Getz - Hyundai are known for keeping these under stealth. A giveaway would be the older versions going on sale before the budget
2. A smaller 1.2 liter engine to avail of the excise exemptions (the U-VA has this advantage).

I have driven both Getz and Swift and would have bought a swift. The Swift is a great car. It has a sporty suspension and on the highway it leaves the Getz far behind. The build quality is good and I get a mileage of around 17-18 w/o A/c on highway and 13 in city. I really am happy with the car. It has good handling and loves corners.
I have taken it to 160 KPh on the highway and still it has more to go. This is not so with the Getz
The Getz is more spacious and though a bit sluggish in terms of pickup is a nice car too.Its top speed is also less.
Performance figures
Swift 0-100 11.5-12.5 secs
Getz 0-100 14-15 secs
If you love looks performance and handling buy swift but if u want a spacious car with good ride quality buy getz. Ask any genuine swift owner what they think of their car and you will find that they love it :). One problem I notice with the swift is that after driving it over a lot of bad roads the front windows rattle if they are down. That is the only -ve of this car. Most reviews I have read in Indian Car mags(Autocar Motoring etc) rate the swift better than the getz.
Economic Times Article
But then I am a proud swift owner and a bit biased

I bought my getz 1.5 crdi last Dec 22, 2006.
Its suspension is superb like full-size sedan.
Space is not a problem with getz for it can comfortably load five passengers.
Hyundai generously designed its interior having amenities that one would want from a car.
Price is reasonable because under the hood is an engine of german technology.
Fuel consumption makes a getz owner proud. A guaranteed 17 kmpl ratio at whatever speed and rpm you hit on highway is what getz 1.5 crdi can deliver.
With H.A.R.I. (Hyundai Asia Resources Inc.), who needs to worry on after sales service?
Getz 1.5 crdi is truly a value for money!

Getz new 1.2 petrol in second quarter of 2007.
Getz new CRDI(diesel) in thrid quarter of 2007.
This is told by Lheem, MD of Hyundai India,in newspaper interview recently.
By Banadesh on Feb 21, 2007
Hyundai Motor India has given a facelift to Getz and will launch the petrol version in the country in the second quarter of this calendar. It is likely to introduce the diesel variant in the third quarter. Both the variants will take on Suzuki??s Swift. The Indian subsidiary of the Korean automaker also plans to double its exports by 2008.
The company plans to export both petrol and diesel variants of the new Getz to Europe by mid-March, said H.S. Lheem, managing director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India.
??We will export about 50,000 vehicles of the new Getz to Europe in March. The second quarter will see the petrol variant in India and probably in the third quarter, the all-new diesel will also hit the Indian roads,? he said.
Sources say the Getz diesel will have a 1.1 or 1.2-litre engine and conform to the small car definition. The current Getz is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine, which is bigger than the 1,200 cc configuration mandated by the government to qualify for the concessional excise of 16 per cent.
The new Getz was supposed to be an export model. Hyundai Motor Corporation had decided to move the production line of the Getz exclusively to India this year. At present, it is being produced both in Korea and India.
Car size row
Lheem has met heavy industries minister Santosh Mohan Dev and expressed concern on the ??lack of consistency? in government policy on the definition of a small car. Lheem sought a grace period of two years for the industry to adapt to any policy change

As per my knowledge skoda fabia has best diesel engine.
80bhp TDI PD engine has pump duse technology which is even superior to crdi. Here injector and pump are integrated together which compress fuel to high pressure (higher than CRDI). These pumps will be seperate for each cylinder this mean there is no pressure drop.

I had the company owned Hyundai Getz GLS and I had to return it back when I left the job. I drove it 20,000 kms in two years and it rock solid. The best hatch I would say on the Indian roads. Sturdy and smart, cruise like a big sedan. I planing to buy a new car and that will be again the Getz only and this time a Diesel version. The most practical city car.

Banwari,
Are you agent of Swift or something? Debates are always necessary for getting to some conculsion.everybody thinks that they are the best thinkers. Even you go technically wise then Hyundai was the first player to lauch diesel engine successfully and even though zen was coming with diesel engine then why the sale was so low? Everybody is not good becoz it is desi or they claim to have the best space and average. Getz is a very good deal and it is everybody personal choice and I dont deny even swift is good.
Hope to get some impartial debate next time.
Ricky
By Ricky on Mar 30, 2007
@Anupam
I don’t think now Getz is coming in April. Hyundai India is considering launching the car in third quarter of the year.
@Ricky
What do you mean by ‘Hyundai was the first player to lauch diesel engine successfully’? Which place are you referring to and will you please tell us what do you want to emphasize on by saying ’successfully’?
My friend, if you are talking about India then you must know that Maruti has launched Diesel Zen and Esteem even before Hyundai’s India debut. And if you are talking about the world then excuse me, many manufacturers had diesel cars in their basket even before the existence of Hyundai Motor Company. As far as CRDi is concerned, Hyundai had been importing these engines from Detroit Diesel, America.
Zen/Esteem Diesel failed in India because of three facts: 1. Engines were being imported from Peugeot so overall cost of car was high. 2. These engines weren’t very refined ones hence lots of noise, low-power and high maintenance. 3. India didn’t have much fuel crisis, Petrol was very much preferable fuel then.
When it comes to comparison between two things, in most of the cases, one stands out as better. It never concludes that the other one is not good!
I have never said that Getz is a bad car, it’s very good in fact on some parameters but yes, I would say again I find Swift better than Getz on many parameters. And you are free to call me ‘Swift Agent’ or whatever you wish.

No matter what anyone feels or says, I think aesthetically & ergonomically, the GETZ is a clean winner unlike the SWIFT. The humungus rear bulge in the SWIFT is a TOTAL eyewash giving a big car feel but unfortunately from the exterior. What matters is the space within and that is where the GETZ comes out trumps hands down. Even if the CRDI Getz is being launched late, I would still wait for it rather than jump at the SWIFT. Agreed both are CRDI machines but if you are concerned about looks then its definitely worth waiting for the GETZ and is worth its price. Its ride handling, comfort, speed, etc. is truly awesome. I am totally enamoured by the GETZ indeed. Its a practical, stylish vehicle best suited to the Indian terrain.
By Deepak on Apr 26, 2007
For that matter even the CRDI technology is being outdone by the latest PUMP DUSE ( im not sure if I spelt that right) engines which are probably in the Skoda Fabia or so. If one is travelling very frequently within city limits then you need a practical car which is easy to manouvre, easy on maintenance, reasonably good on mileage, roomy, good ride feel, solid build, comfortable, good pick up, driving comfort etc. After all a lot depends on how one actually drives a car to get the maximum out of it. So why are we talking about which car gives better mileage ? - all those numbers are under ideal test conditions. Why dont we understand that clearly. We should not fall for all those numbers which are gimmicks!! For me, the ideal car for a city would be the GETZ CRDi. Though a little costlier, its justified by all the plus points in its favour.
By Deepak on Apr 26, 2007
I will be in the market for a new car early 2008. Presently I drive an esteem. I got very satisfactory and reliable service from it. In Hyderabad, the city mileage never exceeded 12, typically 10.5KM/L while on highway I registered a phenomenal 18+ KM/L.
My choice for next car would be a diesel, in the Rs.6-7 lakh bracket. I am tempted by the Swift but am hesitating because it is too cramped for space. Getz diesel could be a good option for which I am watching while actively pursuing your columns.

I have been owning different cars for more than 10 years. Starting from Maruti 800 to wagon R, esteem, lancer, accent, fiesta and getz. Either me or my brother have owned all these cars over the years in Bangalore one after another though not in that order.
I found the Hyundai service very good and prudent enough. If I had complaints and reported those at the time of servicing, hyundai NEVER missed to attend to it.
The worst service, its Maruti. Yes, let alone doing all the oil change, filter change which is anyway required while servicing, they were not attending to the small faults which I reported.
Maruti service may be present in every nook and corner but they are unprofessional. Hyundai excels in that. I loved owning accent and getz.
hyundai looks for the source of the problem and rectifies it whereas maruti does cosmetic job. If the battery keeps discharging, maruti did an excellent job in recharging everytime but not finding the fault in electric wiring.
Swift is a great car to look at, but a tuned esteem engine which is old and build quality in indian roads really matters.
Think and decide guys.If you want sheer performance and looks for a couple of years, go for swift. If reliability and peace of mind for a long time, getz it is

The discussion above is quite useful and fruitful too. I m planning to buy a hatchback diesel version. After coming to know about the diesel version of Getz coming soon this year(may be in 3rd quarter) i m thrilled and confused at the same time bcoz i was about to book a swift diesel in couple of days. I own a accent Crdi 2003 and quite satisfied with the performance and durability of the car. For swift diesel one has to wait for 2 months in Punjab. so after considering the long wait i think i should wait and see the getz diesel and then go for any between the swift and getz. Coz from my personal experience with hyundai i feel a bit inclined towards the company products. I have also kept maruti 800 for 11 years. So the main fight between the two is of space although there r lots of other diff. also. I want to make a sensible buy and dont want to regret later so the information by the users in this blog r quite useful. Plz keep on updating this blog with ur brilliant minds and nice unbiased reviews.
Thanks

Just a week back I got a response from HMIL Delhi PR Office about the getz crdi launch. According to them the expected launch will be in 3rd quarter but it is only “expected” and not committed so far !
This country badly needs quality diesel cars within 5 - 5.5 L (on-road) price range, with affordable maintenance costs. At this moment buyers have NO option other than indica & swift !
Can someone provide some comparison between maintenance expenses of petrol vs diesel models of same category ? Readers can possibly extrapolate / intrapolate from those numbers.
Also I’ll really appreciate some debate on “petrol or diesel”, given todays diesel technology (crdi / pump duse), the earlier myth about expensive maintenance and above all around 75k - 1L difference between a petrol & diesel variant. When should one consider going for a diesel or should he stick to petrol looking at 5-6 years horizon !

In my opinion one must wait for GETZ diesel. As it is more powerful and spacious. As far as service is conserned hyundai is compeeting well with maruti.

Hi All,
I do not think Maruti service sucks. I believe it is one of the best or rather I would say it is the best service u can get in India. Since last 6-7 years, Maruti is continuously No. 1 in customer satisfaction.
Regarding the debate between Maruti and Swift. I will anyday go for Swift. I do not have any odds against Hyundai but I believe Swift is the best value for money out of these 2 vehicles.
By Vinayak on Jun 5, 2007
I completely and totally agree with Anand. I had similar experiences with Maruti service. They fix the problem, but dont give a solution.
May be Maruti excels in customer satisfaction only because of the “its always been there, lets vote for it” kind of mentality.
I am so waiting for Getz diesel.

The competition for the Getz is Citroen C2, Citroen C3, Daewoo Kalos, Daihatsu Sirion, Diahatsu Charade, Daihatsu YRV, FIAT Panda, FIAT Punto, Ford Fiesta, Ford Fusion, Honda Jazz, Hyundai Accent, KIA Picanto, KIA Rio, Mazda 2, Mitsubishi Space Star, Nissan Micra, Peugeot 206, Proton Satria, Proton Wira, Renault Clio, Rover CityRover, Rover 25, SEAT Ibiza, Skoda Fabia, Suzuki Alto, Suzuki Ignis, Toyota Yaris, Vauxall Corsa and not forgetting the VW Polo.
I wish these cars would also reach India before we run out of oil reserves!

By MR.SALMAN on Jun 17, 2007
Salman,
Yes it is worth waiting for …no questions on that….Launch ??? Well I connected with the PR deptt. of HMIL (Hyundai motors india ltd) & they told me Q3 this year…but exactly which month ….I dont know!!!….. CRDi under the accents bonnet is a 3 cylinder and what you would be waiting for is a 4 cylinder unit which shud have an 88Ps engine with a torque of 215 Nm @ 1900-2200 rpm which is more than the CrdI ACCENT ENGINE.To make it simple it wud have a toned down version of the engine which is fixed in Verna nowadays..Hope these answers ur queries!!

Dear Banwari,
You have been quite for long time.

Hi All ,
I have been waiting and waiting for this. Today I went to Maruti showroom in bangalore to book a swift diesel , but they told me that it will take 4 to 5 months to deliver the swift diesel. I do not have patience to wait for another 4 months , so I came back without booking. Not sure what the hyundai people are upto , they all must be sleeping.
Any idea when getz diesel will be released?.
Autocar and Overdrive magzines only gives wrong information.

Hi Ravi,
Many of us fall in your category. Smart buyers seems to be waiting for Getz CRDi. Its really sad to see Hyundai being so slow and late in launching CRDi-VGT version of Getz.

By Pintu on Jun 27, 2007
Hi ,
When exactly in Q3 it will be launched , Q3 spans over July , August and September. Does any one has friends in Hyundai , if so some one can please find out the exact month when it will be launched.
Thanks in Advance,
Regards
Ravi
By Ravi on Jun 27, 2007
Hi,
My feeling(may not be fact) is 3rd week of August or first two weeks of September.
But my wish is it should be launched in July itself.
I am not confident of launch in July as just today Hyundai launched new automatic trans. version of Sonata CRDI-VGT.
The Getz Prime CRDi in India would carry detoned version of Verna CRDi-VGT engine with following spec,
Power:88BHP @/4000 rpm :: Torque 215 at 1900-2500 rpm.
This is what is sold in Europe, but they also sell 110 BHP,235NM,in europe,South Africa etc which is exact Verna version.
But for India,my guess is,they might go only for 88BHP,215Nm version.
However, note that the above values are much much higher when compared to Swift diesel,Logan diesel,Indigo Dicor and even Ford Fiesta TDCi.
So it would be a sheer driving pleasure to drive such good car with such a performance specification.
So I am just waiting…… and hoping that “Sabar ka phal meetha hota hai !!”
Cheers

Hi Guys,
I am having a budget of 5.5 lacs.
I took a test drive of Getz Prime 1.3L GLS and decided on buying it. However based on the parameters below,
1.DAILY RUNNING: My monthly running is @1200kms/month.(City @200kms/month and Highway @900kms/month)
2.BUDGET: 5.5 to 5.8 lacs max.
Pl. advice whether I should wait for Getz Diesel or go in for the Petrol Version given my budget. Would Diesel also fit in this budget of mine.
Cheers,
Sumit
By Sumit on Jul 6, 2007
In Bangalore the waiting time is 8 months for Swift Diesel. Come on Hyundai , Wake up and get at least some customers for Getz.
By Chintu on Jul 9, 2007
I am also waiting for Getz CRDi launchand also eager to purchase the same but don’t know when Hyundai is going to launch? Please help me….
By Vicky on Jul 19, 2007
I do not think any one knows about this , I called up hyundai marketing office and many dealers and you can just hear one message , “very soon , sir” and how soon it is god only knows. Better book a swift diesel instead of waiting for this getz diesel. Hyundai is happy with the money they are getting from their santro. And they do not want to create any competition for the Swift , they accepted the fact and remaining silent.
This is the message I got from hyundai ,
Dear XXXX,
We are planning to launch Getz diesel near future but it will take some
time. We do not finalize the time duration so far.
Regards,
XXXXXX
Only God and Hyundai India VP knows the answer , do not waste your time , I waited for almost 8 months on this and booked a swift diesel.

hi Friends,
I am planning to buy a car in a month. My budget is 4-5(on road price) lakhs.
I am looking for car that gives good mileage and less maintenance costs.
I will be Using the car for around 1000 Km/month.
i am planning to choose between “Indica Turbo DLG(diesel)” and “santro xing XO(petrol)”.
Could anyone of u suggest me which one of the above to go for.
or is ther any other option in my budget.
very grateful to your suggestions
By lk on Jul 24, 2007
LK,
This is not the forum to talk about your concern. This is purely about Premium hatchbacks such as Getz,Swift,Aveo-UA etc.
I would suggest not go for Indica as that diesel engine is not contemprory, Indica would have Common Rail Diesel engine used in Swift within one year. So current Indica diesel is not a good option. Go for proven Santro or many other options such as GM’s Spark or Estillo,WagonR etc.
But please do not reply in this forum.
cheers

the latest news is that getz CRDI will be only launched next yr…
the expected date is jan 2008, we can expect fabia at that point of time tooo….
Fabia will be superb
By red devil on Aug 1, 2007
Mr. Red ….Where you got the news about Getz will be launched in 2008. Even the Hyundai Motors MD said that the getz will be launch in 3rd quarter of 2007 which means max by sep 2007
By Piyush on Aug 2, 2007
Hi,
Anyone has any concrete idea as to when Getz CRDI is going to be launched.
How will it fair against Swift VDI? Which one would be a better deal Swift VDI or Getz CRDI? Is it worth the wait for Getz CRDi?
Rohit
By Rohit on Aug 2, 2007
Mr.Piyush
I am anxiously waiting for getz CRDi. I was disappointed to hear that i will be launched in 2008 only.
“Hyundai Motors MD said that the getz will be launch in 3rd quarter of 2007″. This was said a few months back. Now an autocar expert told that the car will be launched in 2008 only. I believe this piece of info is reliable.
I hope that getz diesel will be launched this quater itself. Hope for the best.
By red devil on Aug 2, 2007
i believe that getz CRDi will be a good competition for swift. It has proved itz worth in foreign countries.
but the prob is that none knows the launch date exactly….
i am waiting for itz launch for past few months. hope itz launched soon. itz at times frustrating which tempts me to go for swift VDi. my only concern with swift is the boot space and leg room. thatz y i am still waiting…
Happy waiting guys
By red devil on Aug 2, 2007
Hi
I agree swift has very lilltle leg room and boot space and over to it the built quality is not so good, although the engine is very refined and peppy.
The design has flaw in that vision gets blocked do to the very small rear glass and design of side windows, I agree Getz should be worth the wait and then there is Fiat Punto coming with the same engine as Swift Diesel but better design I guess.
Rohit
By Rahul on Aug 3, 2007
Yes Red/rahul,
The same reasons are restricting me going for Swift but at the same I doubt Hyundai for the pricing whthere they will make the pricing competitive to Swift or give a superflous price like Fusion diesel
By Piyush on Aug 3, 2007
….i am waiting for either getz diesel or skoda fabia from fast few months…..y these people are delaying….fet up with this and decided to buy fusion diesel version….
hope, …at least these people get up now
By Prasanth on Aug 6, 2007
Hi,
Fabia as and when it comes would also be very good. As well all know skoda delivers Quality.
Getz Diesel should come soon or else it wont trap the market later due to better cars coming up.

By Rohit on Aug 8, 2007
Hi friends,
There are a number of people eagerly waiting for Getz. First for the new shape petrol and now the diesel.
I have used Santro for 8 years and drove nearly 200,000 kms all over North and western India without a hitch and obtained fantastic fuel average. But the pricing of getz is a big-big letdown. Getz 1.1 is underpowered and the dealers unresponsive. Swift 1.3 starts 3.8 lakhs and Getz 1.3 starts 4.5 lakhs. After Mr. BVR Subbu left Hyundai they’ve forgotton the meaning of being competetive. Look at the pricing.
By the time Getz D comes they’ll have 2 compete with Skoda Fabia, Fiat Grande Punto, Indica CRDI besides others. Hyundai seems to have taken its supporters for granted too. Also, the dealers are too unresponsive. I was a staunch supporter but bought a Indigo and now prefer to wait fr Fabia or Punto but not Getz (inspite of it being my fav car).
Thanx
Gaurav
By Gaurav Varma on Aug 9, 2007
Skoda fabia is a good car. However, the problem in India would be the expensive spares and delayed service to import parts. The service personnel and service centers of Skoda are great but they are helpless and have to wait for a specific number of days to get any part imported for octavia and laura.
Also, Skoda should be aggressive and not price the hatch above 7 lakhs max or it would go the Ford fusion way.
Grande punto is an excellente car! it has resurrected Fiat from bankruptcy. It is a great looking car, interiors apt, huge leg and knee room. Again, there are three problems with Fiat India…Service, service and service. Hopefully JV with Tata motors has improved things a bit.
The engine would be same as Swift VDI (CRDi) but tuned to produce more torque. Also another engine would give ~100ps for performance maniacs!
Can anyone please give feedback of Tata motors service backup for Fiat vehicles? Would be very helpful.
By Anand on Aug 10, 2007
Hi,
I have a Tata Indica with me for 7 yrs. Tata service is not that great a experience to start with. It takes such pains to get the car lined up for servicing even after booking it well in advance. ( Autolinks in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi )
Havent seen any FIAT car having come for servicing there. So no much hopes on TATA.

Hi Friends,
I am not clear about diesel engine life and maintenance. I have heard a lot of people saying that the diesel engine get heated up very soon, are more noisy, need higher tempetature to start, wear and tear is high and should be used frequently to avoid starting problems. I see that the desiel engine cars are priced higher than petrol versions and why would anyone pay more for something with all the above problems. So can any one please tell whether the above stated problems of diesel engine are ture or they are things of past which the present technology has overcome.
I plan to buy a car for my family to go out at weekends and have no plans as of now to commute daily by car (maybe in future I would). Can you please advice if its good to wait for a diesel engine or just go ahead and buy a petrol car for my need. As I see the the Swift Diesel has a long waiting period and Getz D is not out yet.
Thanks in Advance

Hi ,
getz Diesel will be released only at the end of this year or early next year.
Check this URL ,
http://www.moneycontrol.com/india/news/business/hyundai-targets-sales33-lakh-units-by-year-end/09/05/297827
–
“The target will be primarily achieved by expanding the dealer and service network and backed by the launch of forthcoming models such as Pa and Getz diesel variant by the end of this year. The new model (positioned between the Santro and Getz) will be first introduced, followed by the Getz diesel variant, said senior officials.”
–
So it may come early next year or in the last month of this year. I already booked a swift diesel after patiently waited for more then 6 months for this getz diesel.

This is just plain nonsense yaar.
I just can’t understand Hyundai’s logic on delaying Getz Diesel.
Hyundai managment team is making some terrible decisions. There is no consistency in communication. Every other guy from Hyundai gives totally contradictory statments at different time.
If I was Chairman,CEO, I would’ve sacked this current Lheem,Arvind Saxena.. Some one above was mentioning about BVR Subbu, probably Hyundai is missing such leadership.
Sania is brand Ambassidor of Getz Prime, Has any one remembers or associates Sania with Getz ?.. Campaigns are too poor to promote this car.
Anyway, thats Hyundai Problem. Car enthus like us talk like this.
Guys don’t wait for Getz Diesel if you dont hear from Hyundai by Aug end about this car.
cheers

Hi,
I’ve been closely following Swift diesel (incl a test drive), getz D & fabia D launch. After i took swift vdi test drive, i almost decided to go for it, but then thought of waiting for fabia. I was never inclined towards getz for some reasons until last week when i drove my friends getz (petrol). Man, getz is better than swift anytime !!! Hence am waiting for getz D & fabia D. Problem is Fabia D top end version wld easily be arnd 7 lac (on road).
Hundai India’s MD said getz D wld be launched after face lifted getz petrol….If one can wait till mid 2008, we wld have Fiat’s Punto & UVA diesel also.
Also I see many ppl fixing their budget (say 6L as an eg), if one is gng for installment option, then 6.5L wld mean monthly addition of Rs 1000 only in installment, wld this be too much extra ?
By Aditya on Aug 19, 2007
Hi all,
Before the Prime 1.1 was launched, the earlier Getz 1.3 was available for less than 4 lakhs. Now Prime 1.3 is available for much above 5 lakh bucks. First they keep such stupidly exorbitant price-tags, then they give 5-10 thousand buck discounts. They have really started taking their customers for granted. They should realise that however good the car may be, it is not the ‘only car’ available in the price sensitive market. There is nothing extraordinary in Getz to sport an price difference of one lakh extra bucks. Not even alloys. I hope that they realise that they are not selling a car in Super-Luxury segment where a price difference in lakhs is normal.
Is there a noble soul in the universe who understands this HYUNDAI logic. No wonder the sales are in such a state.
The fans of Getz can just sadly watch the plight of this gem of a car in dismay.
Rgds
Gaurav
By Gaurav Varma on Aug 26, 2007
These are the things you get in Getz for those extra bucks,
1. Better built quality.
2. Better ride quality(Rides like a sedan).
3. Ample amount of space(Leg room + boot).
4. Tilt/adjustable steering.
5. Clutch Lock.
6. Rear Defogger with wiper.
7. 3 step reclining rear seat.
8. Fully foldable rear seats + 60:40 split seats.
9. Rear spoiler, illuminated gloves. etc etc
But your point taken, for common buyer Money matters and not these attributes and YES we are seeing plight of this gem in dismay. And other cars not having these attributes which are cheaper wins in the market.
Cheers

Hey Vicky,
If I was Hyundai, I wouldn’t tell not to wait for Getz D if you don’t hear from them about launch by Sept. And yell at Hyundai for thier strategy.
See my message posted on 16th Aug.
I am a potential buyer who is waiting to buy a good premium hatch(prefereably diesel) by this Nov. By brother owns Swift Vxi and my brother-in-law owns Getz. I found Getz to be better car on the paramters listed above, so Getz CRDi would be my preference from the existing lot of options(Getz, Swift,U-VA,Fusion). I like Fiat Punto or Skoda Fabia but they’d be launched only next year and may be bit pricy.
If you find anything wrong in my analysis let me know.(Like Getz is spacious than Swift, etc etc.)
OK sir ?

By sathyanarayan on Sep 12, 2007
I am a potential buyer and zeroed on Getz Prime 1.3 GLS and I am reading this forum for quite a while and lots of people mentioning the Getz CRDI. I also want to save money in terms of fuel cost and I have only one option in my budget i.e. Swift Diesel which I don’t like for some reasons. I want a spacious good looking car offcourse which is cheap in terms of running cost. If any one really know about the launch date of Getz CRDI then I can wait. I want Getz and if it runs on diesel it will the best option for me.

By Amith Kamath on Sep 29, 2007
Amit,
Getz Prime D Vs Swift D.
1) The Getz Prime D Engine Turbo is VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo ) where as Swift D is having FGT (Fixed Geometry Turbo). VGT is contemprory technology where as FGT is a bit old. But Swift Engine is a proven one and lot of new cars will be based on that. eg Fiat Punto, new Indica D, may be Chevy UVA D etc…
2) In Getz 5 people can comfortably travel, swift 4
3) Getz Interior is better than Swift. I am not commenting on outside look as it’s subjective.
4) Getz is expensive than Swift.
5) Maruthi guys are having more showrooms and after sales network than Hyundai. Spare parts are cheaper.
Skoda guys are saying that Fabia price will be between 5 and 6 Lakhs, but I feel it will be between 7 and 8 L.
Expected launch Jan 2008.
Fiat Punto may be between 5 and 6 Lakhs. Expected launch
Mid 2008.
Skoda is having a Pump Duse(PD) Engine which they claim is superior to CRDi in terms of fuel economy and low emissions.
By Sijo on Oct 1, 2007
Yeah baby! Getz CRDi is launched!!! Truly AMMMMMAAAZING specs. Had really not anticipated 110ps@4000rpm. Unbelievable! This is truly a hatchback to replace 3 box saloons. Now we know why the launch of this was delayed.
“The state-of-the-art, CRDi diesel power plant also does away with the myth that economy comes at the cost of driving pleasure”. I like it! Learn Maruti, learn something.
Also, Q4 2007 will see launch of Hyndai Pa with same specs as Santro but more interior space! It is confirmed. Just 30K more than Santro. And to top it, it would have a CRDi engine also. Check out overdrive mag sept edition. Currently road test is being done on Indian roads.
Now it is time for Maruti to kick themselves and not take Indian consumer for a ride with just the excuse of their so called service backup and by giving esteem engine (read versa engine) with more torque to a new chassis of swift. That was ridiculous move to fool Indian consumers who they think only see external beauty and fuel economy.
Maruti, I beg you to stop production of unsafe Omni, meaningless wagon-R, age old esteem. Give a better european heart to swift. Then you will earn back the respect of passionate consumers.
By Anand on Oct 4, 2007
Anand,
I think the launch is delayed
as Hyundai guys were afriad whether Getz D launch will clash with Fabia launch. Previously Skoda conveyed that they will launch Fabia by now. ( They confirmed that it will be only on Jan/Feb 2009 ) Now if Hyundai is not launching Getz D, they have to face a tough competition with the new diesel releases from Tata, Skoda, Chevy etc.
I am waiting to see who will win after all these Diesel releases. Read that Bosh is developing an 800 cc CRDi engine for Tata small car…. Diesel segment is hot man !!!
You cannot tell that Maruti fooled Indian consumers.
They gave/ giving cars what Indian consumers are looking out. Now for eg SX4.
I am not saying that Hyundai cars are bad. They are good, expensive too. I am repeating Gaurav Varma’s words on Hyundai which depict Hyundai’s style..
“”Before the Prime 1.1 was launched, the earlier Getz 1.3 was available for less than 4 lakhs.
No wonder the sales are in such a state.”"”
By Sijo on Oct 4, 2007
Gaurav Varma is comparing the earlier 1.3 Getz base version and the new fully loaded(except ABS/Alloy) 1.3 GLS Getz Prime. So his point is a MUTE POINT.
Maruti’s image is a classic example of consumer behavior theories. Suzuki is not even among top 5 automotive companies in Japan.
But Indian feels, every product from them is a GEM.
Anyway, keep the argument aside.
If you take out the price,
“Getz is better car than Swift”.
cheers
By Pintu on Oct 4, 2007
As Vicky suspected I am also suspecting whether Pintu is a part of Hyundai family. I have seen a similar name in another web site too who got irritated when some one pointed out that Hyundai lost it’s 2nd place in India to Tata motors and Swift demolished the sales of Getz.

I am engineering/MBA. So totally understand the gimmicks auto world. I wish I can talk to you to explain the corporates lobby which normal consumer’s cant see. I wish you understood that. That writing, I suspect was one part..
Do you know many cars from Tata and Maruthi don’t even pass the crash test meant for passenger saftey ?
Suzuki use to dump failed or terrbile models in India which for us was great models.
Anyway leave above topic, it requires talk not writing,
I saw the Hyundai net and very dissappointed with GVS CRDI spec. When I am paying 1 lakh more on CRDI, I was epxecting atleast they would launch GLS CRDI.
Shame on Hyundai they are saving money through not giving seat back shopping hook, side pocket, drivers arm rest etc
And Hyundai did terrbile job in this launch.. There is whole confusion surrounding the spec. Dealers dont have the spec or the car for display. And they are saying it would come with ABS and many features of GLS where website says something else.
No paper/TV ads,,,,, Whole thing looks like a mess
cheers

Pinto,
Thanks for writing.
I don’t mind even if you are from Hyundai as Maruthi itself is doing lot of lobbying. For eg, majority of the Auto journalists writes in favour of Maruthi.
And yes no one can beat Maruthi marketting Dept.
Where do you got the GVS CRDI spec ?
I think it was a launch in a hurry.
I am waiting for other Diesel cars launch, may be there will be a price reduction.

Hey folks !!
Although the getz Crdi is launched, I dont think its yet available in Mumbai Showrooms for some unnown reasons!! I checked at the Authorised service centres and none claimed its availability !!! Strange !!
It is still unclear how Hyundai claims that it is a myth that fuel efficency in the Getz Crdi suffers if the Bhp of the car is higher. The Crdi has 110 bhp and thats indeed awesome!! They claim that the VGTI technology plus some tweaking has resulted in not compromising on the fuel efficiency. I am curious to know how ? The mechanics of this needs to be understood unless its just a gimmick or it may have resulted in a minor advantage by mating the VGTI technology which has been projected as a major plus. Time will tell. In any case, one may feel that Hyundai cars are overpriced generally speaking which they are but many owners also say that they have been using their cars for 5-6 years with NO problems such as gear failure, stalling, rattling etc. etc. etc. All this translates to lesser repairs. So I guess one needs to weigh the pros and the cons and see how it benefits in the long run rather than take a short term view and chalk up an assessment.

Hi folks !!! Well , well, well…. 2008 seems to be a slugfest year with so many new launches. The SPLASH, the A Star, The Skoda Fabia, Grand Punto, etc. etc. I think Hyundai is not aggressive enough in its marketing strategy and thats what is seeing them in a rather dull light. Their cars are indeed sturdy, robust with good after sales service. They should have given 2/3 variants in the Getz Crdi. Just one model is disappointing. And also it does’nt have the other features which the earliest Getz had. WHY ? Its a bad strategy.

I am having Getz (P) and In really enjoy with it if you compare Getz with Swift then there are few things which takes Getz far far ahead to Swift as I have experience to both.
1. Space
2. Smoothness drive
3. Smoothness in gear shifting/ accelerator/
Break
3. Staring adjustment
4. Solid interior stuff inside but not as fancy
as in swift
5. Getz:1341cc Swift:1298cc
6. If you go on a long drive then Swift get you
tired but in Getz you will fresh

nowadays maruthi is not doing a good job in marketing.i was about to get maruthi dzire and they have asked me to wait for 6 months the same i feel for Swift.instead of wasting time in getting maruthi swift,i think it better to go for GETZ diesel.I really dont know whether maruthi is creating hype on swift/dzire or it really has demands.
By karthik on Apr 24, 2008
The getz crdi is not selling cause
1. The price
2. abs and airbags not available even as optional.
You cannot even compare this car to the swift as the getz crdi is not in the same class as the swift. The word premium hatchback is interpreted right by Hyundai. And as usual Suzuki has not understood the meaning of the term premium hatchback.

Ok guys, this debate is goin too far enough…
I am planning to buy a diesel model too in the range of 5L…
I did a exhaustive research on diesel cars n i kno how confusing and a pain in the ass it is to choose the right car..
As of now, the SWIFT diesel seemz to be the best option as far as economical diesel cars are concerned.. But here’s the catch..Even though maruthi after sales rocks, it takes abt 4 to 5 and to even 6 months to deliever a damn car..
Dont u guyz think its too much time to wait for a vehicle?
While getz seems good too, with a rocket engine, its far too expensive to pay for a small car segment.
Swift rocks in its interiors look…the dashboard n trip meter looks totally cool.
While getz hav this uncle-aunty type dashboard, meaning old fashioned.
Swift is economical as it gives around 15kmpl in city and 21kmpl in highways..
Getz on the other hand gives around 13kmpl in the city and close to 18kmpl in the highways.
If i hav to make a choise to buy a car at this moment with an immediate delivery, i would choose SWIFT by all means.
The only reason i would go for GETZ right now (even though i love the maruthi swift so so much) is because, i get the getz dilevered within 3 weeks…

Am considering buying Getz 1.1 or 1.3, which is a better option from perspective of fuel economy or should i go in for Getz CRDI.
