Chevrolet Spark (The Same Old Matiz?)
January 16, 2007 – 3:48 pm by Banwari Lal Sharma
When to expect: April 2007Estimated Price: Rs.3-4 Lakh
Matiz is back. Seriously! But it’s not Daewoo this time, it’s GM. New name is Spark, Chevrolet Spark. Whoever has (or had) Matiz knows how good car it is. This ultra-small hatchback had been a huge success among Indian people. It’s back now with same sleek, tempting looks but with a bigger motor. Spark houses four-cylinder, 1L (995cc) Petrol engine that produces 65bhp of maximum power and 91Nm of maximum torque.
Quick Facts
Car Segment/Body style: Small Car/Hatchback
Fuel Type: Petrol
Engine: 1L (995cc), 4-cylinder Petrol
Max Power/Torque: 66ps/91Nm
Dimensions (LxWxH): 3490×1495x1400 mm
Fuel Type: Petrol
Engine: 1L (995cc), 4-cylinder Petrol
Max Power/Torque: 66ps/91Nm
Dimensions (LxWxH): 3490×1495x1400 mm
Carwale Expects: A nice hatchback with considerable power. High price and costly spares are our worries as of now.

By Aravind on Feb 5, 2007
I would advise against Maruti vehicles in this category, Alto costs as much as Santro without matching fatures, space, finish, style. Also Zen Estillo is nothing but Wagon-R with rounded edges and newer dash-boards. Both Wagon-R and Estillo costs 25 to 50k more than Santro for smaller space and stupid rear seat comfort. Both Wagon-R and Estillo are less wider but taller than Santro and thus their stability is really questionable. Note both Amitabh and Abhishek couldn’t push the stupidly designed Versa, very tall, narrow and light!I am gald Versa flopped, these car companies try to sell stupid stuff with marketing. It reminds me of old saying, “If you can’t dazzle with technology, baffle with Marketing”.
If Hyundai spices-up Santro, it will be the best value for money in that category. I can guarantee you, comfort of back seats is un-comparable, seat is deeper, taller and more inclined and buckets are simply superb (I suspect even if mid-sized cars have such good back seats!).
By Sreenivasa Madenahally on Feb 5, 2007
I request the Matiz Spark producers to fix the price for MATIZ in the range of 3.25-3.75 lakhs (inclusive of all).It could drive your market share very very effective.Reduce the cost and sell more.Best wishes for SPARK.Have a long journey!

By Mohan on Feb 26, 2007
Matiz in it’s time has been a wonderful car, great space, superb mileage, real value for money. With it’s MTEC engine, it did wonders. The only true competetor of the hugely successful(in Matiz’s absence) Santro. In the mini MPV catagory, it has been an extremely successful car in it’s time. Things like airbags and ABS have been found lacking in the Indian version, but in general, an extremely useful, comfortable and reliable car.
I just hope the Spark is able to live up to this expectation. The 1 ltr engine is always welcome, but while pricing the car, let GM remember not to bite off more than it can chew, this is, at the end of the day, a buyer’s market.
By AJ on Mar 1, 2007
Chevrolet Spark will really shake the market on its arrival.. It is already No.1 in China…may be could be No. 1 india too.. provided GM will do some thing on price and look.
I am waiting to purchase my first new car it could be Chevrolet Spark or else ALTO..
J.D. Power Asia Pacific Reports:
GM Models Rank Highest in Appealing to Customers in Three of Six Segments in China
Performing well across all factors, the Chevrolet Spark ranks highest in the compact car segment with a score of

Spark in the segment.

matiz, the small big car, the best small car indian roads had ever seen. many cars copy matiz of its sleek comfortable looks. what is the experts opinion about SPARK in comparison to ZEN ESTILO or SANTRO or WAGON-R. The time when MATIZ was on road the competators were far behind in terms of comfort, style, and milage.

I love my MATIZ SG 2001, till date, it has served me very well. I have found it the most fuel efficient and dependable car in city road (in and around Bangalore). It is a pleasure to drive it through all the odd roads of Bangalore. It drives and looks still the new one, of course because of my meticulous care. If there is any exchange programme lunched for existing Matiz owners, it will be a big hit. I am very optimistic that GM will introduce an attractive exchange programme to rope in the huge existing customers. Excited to see SPARK in pictures and couple of live examples in Europe.

it is really nice occasion to re welcome this car from General motors. hope the desiel version will come soon unlike the matiz announced it but not turned back.

By Vinod on Mar 26, 2007
First of all Mr. Sreenivasa Madenahally - I truly agree with you.
Mr. jk reddy - FYI Spark was is market for since 2005 and its just that in india GM has planned to launch now. Estilo is a brand new model from Suzuki that had a global launch only in 2006.
I own Matiz currently and I love my car very much , I would love to exchange it with the new Spark.
I would like to say few points for GM:
1) Pricing should be between 3 to 3.75lacs, else it would be competing with its own model like Chevrolet AVEO UVA.
2) Either give loyalty exchange offers to existing Matiz ownners or provide service/spares for the existing Matiz cars in india.
3) This is the right time for the release of long waited Spark. If its delayed, then soon the 1lac budget cars might be launched in the market and all this hype would go for a waste.
I am sure if SPARK is priced right, it would definetly spark the small car market.
For people who do not know about the space and styling of it I have something. I own a Matiz SPICE 2000 model. At that time itself, it had Power windows, power stearing central locking, keyless entry. I bet none of the so called small cars that existed at that time would have offered comfortable 3 person seating in the rear and an excllent instant cooling AC for that 800CC small wonder.
Thanks for reading my review.

Note:- The above comment is my personal experience and opinion. Excuse me if I had hurt anyones feelings.

By mohib on Apr 4, 2007
I would like to comment on Mr. Sreenivasa addressing against Maruti Wagon-R. I have no idea about the the Matiz as i have never driven it before, but if we compare Santro to Wagon-R, I think Wagon-R is much more refined than the horrible looking santro for the simple reason that this car was built without any design in mind. refer to the older versions. though over the years it has taken some shape which can be stared at. moreover the back seat of a santro is the worst. i travelled from Haridwar to delhi in the back seat of a santro and all i was left with was a severe back ache due to the stiff rear seating arrangement of the car. Wagon-R on the other hand has much more plush rear seats which can be tilted backwards, something i believe is available only this car of this segment.

By Dr. T. N. Khan on Apr 11, 2007
Good to hear that the SPARK is finally being launched by GM. It is gathered that the baseline of the car is on that of the earlier MATIZ of Daewoo. I hope that design of the car with respect to repair and maintenance has been well thought of in order to facilitate easier replacements of parts in view of the difficulty faced with the MATIZ models. As for me, I am keeping on hold of buying a car in this segment, but would definitely consider the SPARK with its parameters and body styling subject to the price which I suggest should be within 3.25 to make a dent in the segement.

Alto seems to be leading the race in this segment with it’s right mix of feature & price. Also, with the network of service centres, Maruti offers an un-matched service.
The vehicle has proved it’s performance on road and is economical too. SPARK has just hype around it as of now.Chevorlet is known for the premium pricing (that kills the advantage which Matiz had while it was with Daewoo).
Also, Chevorlet has not been able to emulate the model of having a strong network of Service Cenres which Daewoo had initiated.
By Amit Kumar on Apr 16, 2007
Spark would, I am sure, take the performance to greater heights from where Matiz left its mark.
By Raj Kumar on Apr 16, 2007
Hi All
Basically, I iwll call people comparing Alto with SPARK and Santro. These both cars are feature rich cars compared to Alto. Now comparing WagonR & New Zen with SPARK. From my point of view, WagonR lacks in design as well as stability. It gives a feeling like you are driving a mini truck. New Zen looks cramped up as far as interiors goes. Only kids can be accomodated on rear seats. Else design is not original again having a tall boy concxept similar to Wagon R and Santro. But in all these Santro is on a higher side as far as performance and comfort goes. You can not expect driving as well as riding comfort from WagonR,Zen or Alto. Santro is much roomy, stable and powerful in this segment and it is a good value for money. About performance of ALTO, i drove it many times and this car doesnt performs only. Lack on power, bad and noisy engine and cabin, rough gearbox, less room for everybody in car.
Now coming to the SPARK. This is definitely not a hyped car. It has got original and unique design, good powered engined in this segment. Looking at the priceband it will be a good value for your money. Secondly, engine and gearboxes of GM are well known in the world. Interior dimensions look attractive compared with all 3 maruti’s. Design looks great not bulky like WagonR. This car will look new on road and will definitely attract people. Performace, now pewople who drove matiz till date they can definitely add about ots performance.
I would suggest its better to wait for some time before investing money CAR. Have a test drive and a test drive can change your mind too. Happy Driving.
Its no more Maruti monopoly in small segment. New era is coming and Maruti better be ready for healthy compitition. and they should really puul their socks to work on quality, design and start giving worth for people’s money.

As an American wanting a small car, I researched the Spark. The comments above are helpful. Unfortunately, US car standards are designed to prevent low-cost, small, lightweight cars from entering our market. This is done in the name of “safety” but serves the US industry to maintain their increasingly irrelevant designs. I was also impressed with the emotional connection many of you have with your cars. In the US the primary intention is prestige rather than able servant to ones transportation needs. I wish you all well as you select the right transportation solution for your needs.

I would second opinion of Rahul Avachat on comparing Alto with Santro and Matiz. Comparisions should be between Santro, Matiz and WagonR, Zen/Estillo. In terms of ergonomics, look, cabin and trunk space, and value for money Santro beats WagonR and Estillo by big margin. In terms of service network Hyundai comes very close to Maruti.
Zen Estillo in one word is just piece of crap. Maruti advertizes all other cars as “boxes”, ironically Estillo is the worst box designed by any company including Maruti. They don’t understand some common sense like Center of Gravity, look at its height-width, it is plain stupid, CG is very high and car will topple easily. Do you remember what happened to tail-lamp/bumper tinkered “International Zen”? Samething will happen to Estillo. There was some initial craze about new release from Maruti especially after SWIFT’s huge success and thus sold couple of thousand Estillos. Old Matiz looks lot better than Estillo in terms of space, height-width-length ratio and style and certainly Spark will through estillo into dustbin if somebody wants more cuter look than Santro.
In terms of value for money, Marutis are the lowest except for SWIFT. Most of Marutis are tin boxes with very low weight, thin tires, outdated and irrational shapes and ergonomics. Amitabh and Abhishek together couldn’t do anything on tall Versa , advertizing with stars won’t sell stupid designs though there are some brain dead who buy crazy stuff! People think Marutis are maintenance free. This was apparently true because before 2000, most Marutis were driven 4-5k per year and you would still see 80s 800 running but they don’t look at the odometer which hasn’t run more than 40-50k. Almost all cars are reliable now.

By Gaurav on Apr 19, 2007
The looks of the SPARK really seem to be encouraging for any new buyer who is looking for a small car like Alto, Wagon R, Estillo or Santro.
The only constraintfor it to be success in Indian Market is the price tag which I suppose should be between 3 lakh to 3.5 lakh otherwise it would only be competing with their own Chevrolet Aveo or U-Va.
Even I was also planning to buy a new car probably Santro or Wagon R, but after the launch of this Spark I am waiting for market feedback on pricing.
By Ripple on Apr 19, 2007
My comments to this new car spark is that GM&Chev guys have moved into new and good direction. I am sure that car will do and meet the requirements of people. People will get attracted towords it only when price would be only upto max. 3.50 for top moedel with all the features. Sales would be boom up. By this price it will be best option for common people.
By Ayaz Ahmad Nika on Apr 20, 2007
Hi,
It seems this car wld bring happiness to all the segments because of size and efficiency.
But the cost factor is more important, because if Spark is of 995CC then Wagon-R is of 1100CC. And the price are very close of both.
So lets see what GM do to increase the customer strength or to attarct customer.
But overall it looks almost like Matiz but in a more refined shape.
I will love to exchange my new Alto of 5 months old with New Spark if company offers a very good and competitive exchange.
By Amit Maniktala on Apr 20, 2007
I m planning to buy new car. Would like to pick from, Alto, Santro, Swift and New launch Spark.
While alto gives me ‘value for money’ thing. Santro has good performance and features. On the other hand, Swift is in my list just because i really love the looks of this car (dont know much about the features, and performance), and Chevy Spark is new on the road with good package.
What u guys suggest wud be the best bet, provided i dont have to cummute very long distance quite often.

I have some very similar observations. I was looking forward to this car but i must say i was disappointed to see it from inside.
Few things i didn’t like.
0. The colours in which spark is available are simply said “pathetic”. They have used that absurd green color for launching the car as well. I have no personal hatred for the green color but this one is just not pleasing to the eye.
1. The dashboard: This could have been a lot better. The co-driver’s side dahsboard is very curvy and you can’t keep anything there as it will simply fall off.
2. Common right and left drive: I think GM tried to be a bit smart here and
this might turn off atleast some prospective customers. What they have done is that with minimal changes to the steering and the front panel controls they can make right hand and left hand driven cars. The negative is that the wiper and side indicators are on the opposite sides. Like if you drive in India you would expect the indicator to be on right and wiper on left. Here it is opposite. Also the speedometer is in the center. So if you are mom is siiting in the car and she peeps in the speedometer u better slow down !!!
3. The backseat: in the LT version there is a 60:40 divide. Though a good addition and unique in this segment the, th dividor is irritating if sit on top of it. So with 3 people in the backseat one will defintely feel the “level difference”. Good idea, bad implementation

Hi All Matizers,
Is GM going to take up the service of all the matiz cars on the road? GM should use the existing ambassodors(matiz owners) to promote the new spark. It will be a good business strategy to take the servicing of matiz and generate additional revenue for themselves. Anyway matiz owner will benefit the quality service provided by the GM.
GM….are you listening?

Hi,
I have a Matiz 2002 with me. I am currently looking for some spares and a good mechanic who could service well. Had also spoken to the GM service center in Noida and they said that the engine of Spark was different from Matiz, they will not be servicing Matiz. If anybody knows about a good place where I can get it serviced in Noida, please mail me at yougotmi@yahoo.co.in.
Thanks,
Mohit

Price guys price, the price need to be a bit lower for spark..but tell me all you Matiz users if, matiz was so good why did it go off the road?
I have always owned cars from the Suzuki stable but this time after Spark has done 6 months on Indian roads,I intend to buy one..but still wondering..a Wagon R Duo or a Spark?
By Apurv on May 3, 2007
Apurv, Matiz went out of Indian roads not because of the product failure, but Daewoo, the parent company went bankurupt across the globe. Matiz is the best car in India in the small car segment, even today. You cant compare a Matiz with maruthi. Even Zen estillo comes with lesser features than my 6 year old Matiz.
This is the reason why GM is getting into small car segment with an already proven model. What matiz lacks is the power when AC is ON since its an 800cc Engine. In Spark its 1000cc engine, which I think it is quiet comfortable. Productwise & Pricewise you can safely go with a Spark than a Swift.

By manish chadha on May 8, 2007
In my view Matiz was one of the best small cars, now that chevrolet has decided to re-launch Matiz with new name and with more power it would be interesting to check the new Spark and with its good looks it surely will create a spark in the small car segment and hopefully it will be able to carry the reputation that is associated with Matiz

i am a owner of a matiz SD. what i would like to know is firstly are the parts similar and will GM service the older Matiz and secondly is there a exchange scheme on. undeniably i find my car an excllent piece of machinery but the nearest service station is 180 km from where i stay which does cause inconvenience to me and 14 more owners like me here.also iwould like to know has the cost of Matiz in resale been afected by the launch of Spark.

Hello guys…I’m planning to buy a car shortly and I came across this Spark. This seems to be good, but my major concern is the service and spares costs. I’ll travel a lot which involves long journey and that causes a worry as I may not find the service centers in smaller towns…can anyone please suggest me if I can go for GM or consider Maruthi ?

I too liked this car and thinking of buying can u please forward me the details of the minimum downpayment to be payed and the other details.
thanking in anticipation and please give the detail sas soon as possible
By Minal More on Jul 5, 2007
Hi Rakesh,
Matiz can use some spare parts of Spark, but not everything. It includes suspensions, few body parts, clutch, gearbox and some engine parts. But most of Matiz parts or compatible (except some body parts) are available in the market, then why you are worried about spark? Matiz users never need to worry about most of the engine parts (because itâ??s an m-tech engine), bushes, rings, linings, suspensions, wind shields or bumpers. Either OEM or compatible is available in market. Take care of the car from any big hits as many body parts like doors, bonnet, hood, top etc are unavailable. Also some interior parts like dash boards, floor etc are also unavailable.
By Sunil on Jul 8, 2007
I too like spark–its design and performance reviews are simply good. But I just don’t see the car on road even after two months of its launch. Why is it so?

I was planning to buy one small car in the price tag of 3.75 to 4.20 Lacs , and i did a small research about Wagon R Vxi Duo, Santro Zing XL, Tata Indica V2 Zeta. Initially i concluded on for Santro Zing Xl ,Factors being - Space and Style, But one fine day i suddenly wanted to review this new hatch back Chevrolet Spark, I found the Spark 1.0 LS really above the rest of all the small cars i have seen.
I am 6.2″ tall and my wife 4.8″ - No kids, I neede space ,space and only space, and it was my final call, i found Spark to be the ultimate choice, but my fear is all about the service back up to be provided by GM, can we rely on GM, I stay in Titupathi.
Can some one Help.

Hi I love this car for 3 reasons;
1) High degree of ergonomics.
2)Style & interior comfort ( gives you a feeling of sitting in upper end middle size car)
3)Good mileage which every indian will expect.
But I have 2 dissappointments also
1) Low ground clearnance
2) Not enough storage space
