All-new Toyota Corolla coming to India by mid-2008

October 9, 2007 – 9:26 pm by Ashish

Toyota Corolla FrontThe premium luxury car segment was once dominated by one name - Toyota Corolla. It was set as the benchmark and the segment’s new entrants had a path cut out to try and beat the Japanese major at its game. Skoda’s Octavia did sell well, but the Toyota Corolla was still setting the sales chart afire! And then came the Honda Civic, to change everything.

Honda Civic, owing to its futuristic styling and funky interiors was an instant hit and soon went on to become the highest selling premium luxury car. So what would Toyota do? Sit and watch? Hardly. Toyota is going to introduce a Corolla all dressed up to beat the Civic in the D segment. Though not as futuristic looking as the Honda, Corolla presents itself as a smart and good-looking vehicle with some design elements taken from its elder sister - Camry. The front end is reminiscent of Toyota’s flagship model owing to the sharp looking headlamps, grille and the bumper. The rear is not path-breaking but looks neat.

Toyota Corolla Front ProfileThe A and C pillar are rakish which gives a feel and look of a bigger car. The wider track and will endow the car with more cabin space. Interiors too are expected to be ergonomically laid out to ease the driving and the quality will be a notch higher.

Toyota Corolla RearThe 1.8L engine powering the current Corolla may be tuned for more power and better efficiency. A super powerful 1.6L, 126hp motor is also being considered by Toyota while a 2-litre common rail diesel engine will surely make life difficult for the Optra Magnums and the Skoda Octavias here!

It will be fireworks! Honda, Chevy, Skoda - come mid-2008 and you have something to worry about.

  2. Diesel on Toyota Corolla would be a great worry for Skoda and Chevy for sure.

I hope it comes with good makeover on the exterior, something like dashing/refreshing Honda Civic.

D segment needs more option for consumers for sure.

    Cheers

  9. This is beyond belief…Toyaota has been the slowest in bringing their models here.they should have figured id out by now that milking and old corolla and huge bulky taxi looking innova is not what the indian consumer wants…MID2008 is vague and why not deisel as an option now..
I hope they realise that they should release yaris here before jazz comes in and make a killing in the country
well…..waiting to buy the new corolla and the yaaris
but if they do not release the corolla before ganpati well too bad…..coz like me many are not waiting…cheers!!

  12. Toyota should bring the Avensis to India…its bigger than the corolla….It should also bring the SUVs it offers in the US like the highlander which are much more cheaper than the Cruiser……there is a big market for suvs in India like the international trend ….but they become double the price here due to duties…..they should start assembling them here rather bringing them as CBU’s

Diesel engines will be the first ones to be launched with mileage aroung 15kmpl. Though priced little higher than the existing corolla, the interiors would be comparable to D segment. 18. Most likely, delay in launching new Toyotas in India is the main reason for transfer of former MD: however Co.’s silent attitude, for the sake of selling a few ‘old’ Corollas, is not consumer friendly.
Concerning ‘Fortuner’, Co.’s (lack of) communications is next to…callous.
Toyota needs to realize that (clients’) frustration comes to a price, we may claim when choosing from whom buying our next cars.
