Chevy Spark Launched in 3-4Lakh bracket
April 23, 2007 – 2:59 pm by Banwari Lal Sharma
Too many new cars coming this year. Matiz re-entered India as Chevrolet Spark finally. Rick Wagoner, Chairman and CEO General Motors, was present in New Delhi to launch Chevrolet Spark. Car is priced in Rs. 3.09-3.89 lakh range, ex-showroom Delhi. In almost every aspect, Chevrolet Spark is going to compete with Santro Xing, Wagon R and Zen Estilo.
If not the whole India, then at least almost all Matiz owners and many prospective small car buyers were desperately looking forward to Chevrolet Spark’s entry into India. It came finally and this time, the Matiz is bigger. Not in size but in engine capacity and power output. Chevy Spark has 1L engine which outputs 63bhp of power and 90Nm of torque. With these figures, enthusiasts will definitely feel good but people concerned about fuel economy might be disappointed. Unlike Matiz which comfortably gave over 15 kmpl in city, Chevrolet Spark will give approx 13kmpl in similar driving conditions. People who have ever driven Matiz know that in spite of having a very small engine, Matiz never gave a sluggish feeling. The engine always did the needful as far as city-driving is concerned. With 1L engine, Chevrolet Spark is more thrilling in city and much better at highways. Overall, satisfactory engine performance.
Exterior is not changed much. Though fascia, tail-design are quite different from Matiz, the overall shape/size of Chevrolet Spark gives a familiar look. Exterior/Interior dimensions are almost identical to our old Matiz. Car is available in five colors; Icy Blue, Mint Green, Fiery Red, Casablanca White and Platinusamir Metallic. To me, Mint Green looked too funky but Icy Blue and Platinum Metallic were soothing. Paint work quality could have been much better.
The most peculiar thing about interior is speedo-console. It’s mounted in the absolute middle, just above central-console. I don’t know what are the plus points of this design but I hate to see left every now and then to keep a note of my speed. In fact I am not satisfied with neither Spark’s overall dashboard design nor it’s build quality/finish. It’s just average. Seats are comfortable enough, however, legroom is barely adequate, especially at rear and that too if you are tall. But considering the size of Spark, it’s good enough.
The car is available in four versions 1.0 E, 1.0, 1.0 LS and 1.0 LT. 1.0 E is the basic version with virtually nothing for features sake. 1.0 variant has got AC, 1.0 LS has AC, power steering, front power windows and central locking. Fully loaded 1.0 LT has rear power windows, front fog lamps, rear-window defogger, 60:40 split double-folding rear seat and rear washer/wiper. 1.0 LT also has alloy wheels (set of four) and ABS as optional package.
Chevrolet Spark 1.0 E is priced at 3.09 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi while the top-end version is priced at 3.89 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi. Price range seems fine, though the non-AC non-PS version could have priced under 3-lakh to compete with Santro Xing XK Non-AC. The Car is quite cheaper than its closest competitors Zen Estilo and Wagon R.
Overall Chevrolet Spark seems to have added yet another option (and confusion too) in small segment car buyers. It’s really great that in 3-4 lakh range, Indians have many options to choose from now. GM has provided 3 years/1 lakh kms warranty and have announced that they will offer lowest-cost spares. While going in for an American car, everybody is concerned about maintenance cost. With this promise, GM will definitely break many loyal Maruti/Hyundai customers.

Me an abs loyal customer of Matiz and own a fully loaded 2000 Matiz. My concern is whether the PS of spark is electronic or conventional. Because, I find it virtually impossible to repair the PS, option is to replace (cost approx 25K). One very strange thing is dashboard of new Spark which actually reminds the good old days of Amby when you need to look to left constantly while driving ! I am yet to physically feel the new spark as it is not launched in my area (Guwahati).
Hope, my next car will be a Spark!!

Can we also look at some good exchange option with Spark and matiz in furure..
By Debjit Chakraborty on May 25, 2007
I AM EAGERLY WATING FOR ITS ARRIVAL . i WAS PLANNING TO TAKE SANTRO , BUT NOW I HAS TO RE-THINK . THE WARRANTY AND THE CHEEP SPARE AND LOW MAINTANECE COST IS THE MOST ATTRACTIVE PART

New spark seems to be good for nothing>>>>
Compared to Wagon -R at same price gives bigger size, better interiors and reliability and service of Suzuki.
I do not recomend any new buyers to go for this stupid car with speedometer at center ( just to look different and land u in problems )
Ofcource if it is priced at maruti 800 segment then its good otherwise ALto is far better then This crap.

hehe…kudos to u harsh…but i think u r being a little harsh(the english harsh).
Yes i do agree that at its price the Spark is a bit of a White Elephant..but i will tell u what disappointed me most about this car..its looks! Godamn is looks like a friggin mutilated matiz…like its been through th eblast furnace and deformed beyond recognition. I do confess that it has a zippy and very responsive engine, and a very plush interior with a funky speedo..but i cant just get over the fact like this car looks like a transvestite alien. That notwithstanding, i do see a fair amout of these eyesores in deli streets which proves beyond doubt that the indian customer is a short sighted one and does not research his cars before he buys them.

Today I drove Chevy Spark, I like the car.Of course, the cost is on the higher side but it has features such as
1) Sequential Fuel Injection because of which you need not the gears frequently, further if you remove your legs from the accelerator, it won’t knock & stop but would continue rolling ( which normally is not with other cars of the same category).
2) It has tubeless tyres.
3) Maintenance is Rs 211 / month as claimed by the Company.
4) Fuel Efficiency is the best as compared to any other car of its segment. Excellent for City as well as Highways. Rear Seat is very comfortable beacuse of GAS filled absorber.
5) Space utilisation is done very judiciously ( Mobile charger, Card holder, Coin holder, Bottle holder on front & rear), extra space for keeping documents.

Hi Prashant, I am very agree with you. I just took the test drive and I found Spark the very best car. The point you mentioned that if we put our step away from the accelerator, it dont bump, gives smooth ride and pleasure.
The interior is awesome and I do not think like Harsh that giving Speedometer in the middle will put u on any risk, unless you are too speed-freaky, it gives an experience of driving an international vehicle.
Backseats are really too comfortable unlike Matiz. I dont see any car in its class beating it in confort or acceleration.
I owned a Matiz for many years but after driving Spark, I must say that it is no way in touch with the poor Matiz, its a powerful beast need to be tamed.
I will strongly recommend this car to all of you who are looking to buy a car at around 3.5 lakhs.

Chevrolet’s new aveo U-VA 2008
1) This new aveo U-VA will be the 2008 avtar of aveo
U-VA for the indian market and will have the same engine which powers the current U-VA.
2) Body coloured bumper, Centerally placed Logo. Sporty fog lights , Different and stylish bonnet follows the lines of radiator grill. SO MANY THINGS.
If somebody is planning for U-VA and people who are thinking to buy car next year then they can think for this car.

By Madhab Saha on Sep 16, 2007
Hey, I agree with Prashant and Hashim coz I took a test drive today and If I compare the leg space to Wagon R, Spark is better. Even if you are driving in fifht gear and reduce the speed till 20 kmph, car doesnt stop.
45,000 discount till Navratras is an awesome deal too.

A small car that is refined and road-worthy for city driving is the phrase that best describes in heavy traffic jams!!! And pot holes!!
bought this vehicle in Nov 07 and still love the feel and drive of this car. I bought a LT model This is my second car and was chosen for the city ( bangalore - synonymous for bad traffic). I had decided for this car after the test drive of Wagon R, Santro. Both the WR and Santro have a bad dashboard design that look outdated. WR looks old and boxed. Santro is zippy , but the vibrations are felt in the steering wheel, has a bad rear suspension, also i care for the brand name and image.
The best i love about Spark is the good looks and decent yet distinct interiors. A very quiet and refined engine, A/C is good.
from this low-stress car –even after comparing with Santro’s engine. However, the engine pick-up speed is comparatively slower than the initial excitement it manages to infuse in drivers: zero to hundred comes at 15.93 seconds as the force is delivered with less of a vengeance as required, when full passenger capacity is reached and the AC is on, though overtaking may require a switch into lower gear for smoother performance, i’ll warn you. on highway it can meet Honda civic but this is small car. let it be.
at highway speeds and is less prone to suffering adversely when faced with cross-winds, so enviable ride-quality for hatchbacks is guaranteed for all passengers in the Spark. Quiet and efficient suspension, Apollo tubeless tires grant noiseless driving pleasure while a light power steering and compact size enable fuel-efficiency of 11-13Kmpl and 15-18Kmpl for city and highway driving, respectively.
I met accident and recovered through Reliance Insurance. The amount is around 40,000. Rs. at that it was clocked around 200 Km only!
A
My one and only dislike about this vehicle is the low drumming noise that is produced on rough roads at high speed!! Ha ha ho ho He he he he ….but I love it he he he…
Due know after repairing at service center spark covered about 2500KM in and out city. Without any hiss!!!
Even if you are driving in fifht gear and reduce the speed till 20 kmph, car doesnt stop. That true he he he
Overall it is good vehicle if you are not the typecast Tom Dick Harry.
These have Sequential Fuel Injection because of which you need not the gears frequently, further if you remove your legs from the accelerator, it won’t knock & stop but would continue rolling (which normally is not with other cars of the same category)
A car that not only won our hearts but accolades aplenty; however the Spark promises more when u drives it more!!!!!!! And its a powerful beast need to be tamed he he he
If u want best in all small car category then go SPARK!!!he he he
