Mahindra-Renault Launches Logan, Hyundai Launches Getz Prime
April 4, 2007 – 7:27 pm by Banwari Lal SharmaFinally very much awaited Mahindra-Renault Logan was launched yesterday. In another event this week, Hyundai India launched Getz with a smaller engine and renamed it Getz Prime.
Mahindra Renault Logan: Logan has three engine options (1.4L and 1.6L Petrol, 1.5L Diesel) and comes in five variants (GL, GLE, GLS, DLE and DLS). Basic Petrol version has a price-tag of Rs. 4,27,950 and base Diesel version a price-tag of Rs. 5,47,064. The costliest Logan in India is top-of-the-line Diesel DLS 1.5 DCi with a price tag of 6,43,939 rupees. All prices provided are ex-showroom Navi Mumbai.
Overall first impression of the car is good. It’s overall priced perfectly, however, the top-end version can be considered a bit high on price. 1.5 DLS could have been worth the price if it could have got alloy wheels and ABS as standard. Driver-side air-bag is provided in this version though.
CarWale.com has provided the basic data for research and comparison. Prices will be updated till tomorrow. Our executive called a few Mahindra-Renault dealers in Mumbai and they confessed that they too don’t have prices as of now. Some of them are expecting prices till today evening and rest are being told that they will get them on 6th of this month.
Hyundai Getz Prime: Hyundai India replaced Getz with its newer avtar Get Prime on Monday this week. Getz Prime is available for sale in four versions. The two starting versions i.e. GLE and GVS have got Santro Xing’s 1.1L engine and the rest two i.e. GLS and GLX will continue using the same 1.3L engine.
Ex-showroom Mumbai price for the base GLE is Rs. 4,08,128 while the top-end GLX has a price-tag of Rs. 5,50,484. Price still seems miserable for Getz, well at least I think so. Even with the smaller 1.1L engine, 1.1 GLE is only 11,000 cheaper than earlier 1.3 GLE. Getz’s 1.3L engine variants are around 30,000 costlier than their previous equivalent versions now. I don’t understand the strategy behind the pricing thing. Maybe Hyundai wants to say, Getz is pricey and is for the class, if you cannot afford it, buy the one with smaller engine instead.
We will provide Getz Prime’s data for research, tomorrow.
Update (12-April-2007): Getz Prime features, specifications, colors and prices are available for research.

The Logan is based on the B platform on which third generation Renault cars are built. Logan designer Kenneth Melville (the man who designed the Mercedes SLK) told Business Week, the original design brief for the auto was a â??value-for-money car with a lot of space and the stately look of a sedan.â? Certainly Logan serves the purpose.
The Logan’s design is quite simple and basic in order to keep costs low, single mould dashboard, straight lines. The only saving grace is probably the nose which looks contemporary atleast and the flared wheel arches give give the car a somewhat muscular look. The engines, especially the diesel is the highlight, the Mahindra Renault Logan will be offered with a 1.4 litre petrol motor producing 75 bhp and a 1.5 litre Turbo Dci diesel motor producing 70 bhp and 16kgm of torque. The car is also expected to have good suspension which will give it sharp handling characteristics and robustness. The cars interiors will be spruced up for the Indian market considering that India’s look for a more upmarket feel in a saloon.
The car will be made available with three different engine options and in as many as eleven variants, to compete from indigo to fiesta, from Verna to aveo.
Power output is a modest 70bhp, similar to the Tata Indigo, but the torque of 16.3kgm is (higher than the Tata indigo) with 85% of peak torque available between 1,500 and 3,500rpm, the 70hp 1.5 dCi engine delivers lively acceleration that will meet your expectations. Gear ratio is good enough to exploit the torque of the engine i.e. you donâ??t need often switch gears.
Supercharged by a low-inertia turbocharger to reduce the response time, it combines comfort and driving flexibility. Since a large amount of soundproofing (to preserve the low cost) was omitted, road vibrations and engine sound and wind noise are noticeable for the passengers. The engines are specially prepared to handle lower quality fuel, preserving the fuel economy and pollution levels. Combined with its 50-litre tank, the modelâ??s low fuel consumption gives it a basic range of over 1,000 kilometers.
The Logan 1.5 dCi accelerates from 0 to 100kph in just 15 seconds quicker than fiesta and indigo. Fuel consumption is very frugal. Deduce the figure by 25% for India u will happy to ride it against Indigo and Verna. Fiesta cannot match its low cost despite equable mileage.
In order to make maximum savings on production costs and recycle components and technical solutions already in stock, the car comes with a flatter windscreen than usual, a single body shell (to save on welding), rear-view mirrors are symmetrical and can be used on either sides of the car and a dashboard moulded in one piece. The rear lamp clusters, set at an angle, smooth out the carâ??s structured edges. The Indian Logan is all set to get a different grille and a Renault logo. It will also come with new lights and an entirely body-coloured nose.
The aerodynamic drag coefficient is 0.360.Ground clearance is 155mm which has to work out for the Indian roads. Logan suspension is said to be soft and strong, and the chassis sits visibly higher than most other cars help it to negotiate dirt roads and potholes, but the real test will come when the car hits the Indian road.
With a record wheelbase of 2630mm against indigo (2450mm), Verna (2500mm), Fiesta (2486mm) it is more spacious.
The Loganâ??s interior space was designed for countries where it is common for whole families to pile into one car! So there are 5 proper seats and a very large boot with a capacity of 510 litres, offering best-in-class value. Three very tall passengers (over 1900 m) can sit comfortably in the back. The width of the seats (1,420 mm), foot room (420 mm) is generous, and there is 185 mm of knee room. The adjustable steering column and seat and with a cabin length of 1685mm (you no longer need to adjust for the driver).Air conditioning takes between 3 to 10 minutes maximum to reach the desired temperature and is powerful enough to lower temperature even from 40C. The absence of a boot release means you have to use the key each time you want to open the boot.
Hope all this will help to all my dear friends who is thinking of buying MAHINDRA RENAULT.
Now I am worried about AVEO, VERNA, FIESTA and other cars.
With this price you are getting everything (NECESSITY but not LUXURIOUS) then who is going to buy SWIFT and UVA.
Yours
Sanjeev Sharma

Logan to shake up sedate sedans
The Logan has rolled out with an aggressive price positioning, analysts say the move will redraw the segment lines and may even lead to revision in the prices of the existing entry-level sedans. Will the established rivals up the price and promotions ante soon enough?
But first things first-the Logan has debuted with three engine trims. The petrol version - in 1.4 and 1.6 litre variants - starts at Rs 4.35 lakh and goes up to Rs 5.76 lakh (ex-showroom) in New Delhi. The diesel version, kitted with a 1.5 litre common rail engine, starts at Rs 5.54 lakh and goes up to Rs 6.51 lakh (ex-showroom) in New Delhi.
At these prices, the Logan is interestingly poised in the entry-level mid-size market. It isnâ??t the cheapest car in the segment. The petrol Indigo from Tata Motors starts at Rs 3.99 lakh, while its diesel version kicks off at Rs 4.35 lakh - both substantially lower priced vis-a-vis the Logan.
But the Loganâ??s base variant tag does make it competitive vis-a-vis two tried and tested warhorses-namely the Esteem and the Ikon. The Esteem (available only in two 1.3 litre petrol versions) costs Rs 4.48 and 5.14 lakh, and is just a tad more expensive than the Logan.
The Ikon, also kitted with a 1.3 litre gasoline engine, starts from Rs 4.76 lakh and is pricier than the Logan at the base.
Fordâ??s other mid-size offering, the Fiesta, which is available in both petrol and diesel, starts much higher at Rs 5.86 lakh (going up to Rs 7.18 lakh). Its diesel is priced between Rs 6.96-8.02 lakh. The Chevy Aveo from General Motors costs Rs 5.6-7.2 lakh.
As for the other competitor, the 1.5 litre Hyundai Accent GLE base model, at Rs 5.32 lakh, is also positioned higher than the Logan. Its top-end 1.6 litre GLS costs Rs 6 lakh. As for diesel, the CRDi version costs Rs 6.86 lakh. The Verna petrol starts at Rs 6.26 lakh while the CRDi diesel costs Rs 7.46 lakh.

Hi ppl,
I am also planning to own this car but then i need to know more abt this..Like which version to go for.. whether to take up petrl or diesel, as they say that diesel car have a lot of maintenance prob and the resle value is very low . And abt the spare parts available. And haev got few negative reivews like the design of the car is not that satisfactory and it to has got some maintenance parob.
So ill be glad to know more on this. planning to get one soon. Pls help me out….
By nithin on Apr 8, 2007
Hi Guys,
Dear NITHIN, I understand your doubts and confusion over your car selection.
First of all, IT IS FALSE that diesel cars pose a maintenance problem. It is a false statement popularised by petrol car makers, just to sell their product. I have 4 diesel cars now and have been owning diesels dfom almost a decade and they are just too good. Also, diesel cars almost ALWAYS have a higher resale value, contrary to what has been told to you, due to it’s attractively low running(fuel) cost, thereby attracting the taxi segment too. However, petrol car makers, on realising that earlier car diesel enginees like ambassador and jeeps were primitive and troublesome, have conveniently branded all diesel cars (including New Generation diesel cars) as troublemakers which is just rubbish.
In fact diesel cars are much moe friendly on the road due to their capability of High torque delivery at low speed, that makes signal light dodging a pleasure, apart from less gear shifting work on up slopes. I can say that in short, you will hate and never be able to drive ANY good petrol car once you get used to a Diesel car.
Regarding the LOGAN, I too don’t know it’s exact qualities on road, but I must say that a bad europian car in normally much better that a so called good Japanese, Korean and American car, in terms of strength, build, longivity, SAFETY…..and every thing else. But yes, if Mahindra does not help, then spares, espcially those imported could pose to be a problem. However, all spares are available abroad as the logan is an internaional model, but you will have to wait for longer days to repair your car in that case.
THINK well (don’t blindly trust me),take a drive of the basic variant diesel( as it has ac and power steering and is worth the price compared to the other model with some AALTU FALTU goodies making it a lakh rupees dearer) and make your choice.
THANKS
By Satish Nayak on Apr 10, 2007
hi NITIN,
If u are driving more than 30-35 km daily then U should think of buying Diesel car, otherwise petrol is best option. Wait for another 2-3 months before going for this car.
Maintenance especially spare parts might create problems,if Mahindra is not helping. 30% spares are to be imported only for single car.
Even its ground clearence is is 155 mm which has to work out for the Indian roads. Logan suspension is said to be soft and strong, and the chassis sits visibly higher than most other cars help it to negotiate dirt roads and potholes, but the real test will come when the car hits the Indian road.
Engines are currently being imported from Romania and Spain. Parts in India are 10 percent cheaper than in Romania, where the Logan is already being built at the Dacia subsidiary, and Renault has â??fairly significantâ? internal targets for parts exports, he said. Renault may export Logan cars from India if demand is less than 50,000 units a year, Pelata said.
The interior is pretty spartan, but that is not a problem considering the price paid for it, and the list of standard equipment. The greatest thing this car has is the big interior. In the rear 3 big adults can be comfortable on a long trip, which is a thing you do not see on the other cars that are in the same range of price.
Thanks

Sanjeev,
It looks like your from Renault.
Please do not compare Logan with Verna,Fiesta,Aveo,City.
Its like comparing Donkey with Horses or like comparing Maruti 800 to Swift !!.
I agree that, Logan is value for money BUT it simply can not be compared with above cars.
But anyway, you give very good information(many honest) about Logan. Thanks for doing that.
Also note that, Logan is not original Renault car. This car was made by a Romanian car company called Dacia which Renault purchased few years back. So this Logan came in Renault’s portfolio.
(This is for people who do not know the history of Logan).

Hi Pintu,
Thanx for going through my responses.
I think U read only first two responses not the third one thats why U r saying this. If U go through that response written for Mr. NITIN, then u will know the truth.
Moreover I am talking about necessity not luxurious.(WITH THIS PRICE TAG 4,28,000 WHO THINKS FOR SEDAN)
Anyway thanx once again and please keep in touch.

Hi Pillai,
Thanx a lot. For buying mid size cars (If U R talking about Hatchback cars) then wait for another 3-4 mths, because
1.Hyundai Motors is working on another hatchback offering - codenamed Pa - which will be positioned between Santro and Getz.
2.Chevrolet Spark which will follow the hatchback Aveo UV-A(Already Launched but still to hit the roads).
3. Fiate STILE is going to be launched and moreover
FIAT PUNTO might be launched soon(At the end of this year)

hello dear friends what can i say about Logan.I was thinking for buying Verna/logan/prime or swift but when i took test drive i think this car is really going to compete hard against above cars.Well I have already booked 1.5ltr dci.The car is really a metal monster yet looks very attractive.you will never get such a big space in any other segment with this price tag(not talking abt mercedis lol),althogh i feel that mahindra should reduce their price a little to make this car a best buy.
Talking about suspentions they are comfortable not too much to say about it but if you see the boot space of Logan then you will understand Why this car is called India’s first wide body car.
All people who are thinking about buying Logan just do it,don’t believe in gossips and miss your chance.Hope you liked my few lines.

Hi Everbody,
Thanx for ur valuable comments / compliments. I am little bit confused what actually you people want? Actually, i want to know a car for necessity or luxiourous car?
See there is lot of difference in luxiourous and simple car. Power, space comfort, boot space and how much u drive car daily.
Different people have different choices. Therefore, if you are driving more than 35 km daily then thinks of diesel car. In 5.5 lacs, on road price u will not get sedan car of any brand (according to my knowledge) because maruti esteem diesel is not available in market these days. Accenct is beyond 5.5 lacs. If a car, price is 5 lac then add 45-55000 for registration and insurances charges. However, u will get swift diesel in this price range.(If asking for Diesel car)
My personal suggestion is this that first make mind what really u want (AFTER SETTING THE BUDGET) Space power comfort boot space petro/ diesel/ fuel economy etc.
Do not go blindly after the dealers what they say. Test Drive the vehicles.
Wait for LOGAN to hit the road. Merits and demerits you will know soon. After all, you are putting your money.
IF STILL CONFUSED I WILL TRY TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM.
By sanjeev sharma on Apr 19, 2007
Hi Sanjeev,
It seems you are there to help out all who are looking for the answer to the only question - “Which Car should onve buy from all that are available in the market - today?”.
I have been driving a Hyundai Santro for the past 4 years and I’m happy to own it. But now that I need to travel > 60KMS/day I need to look for a Diesel car. I test drove the Verna, Indigo, Fiesta, Acsent (CRDI & VIVA CRDI) and finally the Swift Diesel. I have booked the Swift finally but am disappointed with the waiting period. Then I heard of the M-R LOGAN. I was googling when i hit this blog and got some information on that. Appreciate all who have added to this blog. I look forward for more of such useful information.
I am plannig to wait for another week before I change my mind for a VERNA or a FIESTA.
Thanks,
Happy browsing and driving…

Hi Sanjeev
I have briefly summarised the queries for all of us. Its a two point query, independent of each other.
Yes I will drive around 35 km plus daily. I have a meagre budget of 5.5 Lacs on road. Shall I buy an Ikon flair or wait for Logan? (talking about petrol comparison)
Shall I buy a base logan diesel or is there an alternative available for the same price reange in which logan diesel base model retails (the car has to have a powersteering and AC)
Will wait for Sanjeev to respond to all of us thru this question
Regards
Rohit 5.5 lacs on road guy!

I always wanted that we use Blog for writing views on the post, Answers to ask short but important questions and Forums to discuss things…
Anyways, lets discuss your problem here only. Many of you have not decided whether to go for Petrol or Diesel. Let’s start with this only. Assuming that Petrol is 50 rupees/liter and Diesel 35 rupees/liter. Logan Diesel is approx 80,000 rupees costlier than similar Petrol version. If we perform a simple calculation, it will be apparent that the Diesel Logan will give benefit after 50,000 kms of running. Yes, if any of you is willing to sell car before 50,000 kms, you are in sheer loss. After 50k kms, Logan Diesel would be profitable. So, Diesel Logan is for those who are willing to drive it for at least 75,000 kms.
Another fact is that Petrol Logan is much superior in performance as compared to Diesel one. Now, Diesel or Petrol, choice is all yours.
Now, Logan vs competition. Logan is for those, who are looking for a decent, affordable sedan. Luxury-seekers, please stay away. It’s a new launch from a very new company in India, so resale, after-sales-services are yet to be verified. Spares and maintenance, I hope Mahindra will be able to provide us comfortably and that too at affordable prices. I don’t see any worries here. Overall, as of now, Logan is for those who are not expecting too much from their car. For people with extreme thoughts about reliability, service or resale, it would be great that you wait for a while.
Summary (for 4.5-5.5lakh budget):
Economy with good performance: Logan
Luxury: Swift/Ikon
Extreme Reliability, Resale, A.S.S.: Esteem/Swift
And my suggestion, as always, is you check-out the cars yourself by test-driving them.
By Banwari on Apr 21, 2007
Dear all,
I just happened to read these pages and I am really amused by the queries and answers.
Everybody seems to be having questions regarding whether to buy a petrol or diesel, whether to buy a new launch or an established model, whether to buy luxury or technology.
I have often read statements that if one is driving morethan 50 km per day then only a diesel makes sense. This purely depends on the difference in initial investment. For example, if the difference between a petrol and diesel vehicle is Rs. 1 lakh, then you can expect a decent return of Rs.800 per month (at prevailing bank rates) if this money is invested. Then you should compare the running costs of both the vehicles (this includes the fuel expenses and the service costs) and see where the balance lies. Please remember that the service of diesel vehicles can cut a big hole in your pocket at certain times because the common rail diesel injectors are definitely not inexpensive. (don’t think of buying a diesel CAR with anything other than a CR system).
The diesels are gaining prominance in the passenger car market. 35-40% of all passenger cars sold in Europe are diesels. In USA, this percentage is still small (about 12%), but this figure is increasing year after year. In India, people simply look at the mileage a diesel vehicle offers per litre of diesel, which is additionally cheaper than petrol, and then make buying decisions. This is erroneous.
In spite of all that is said about the quality of the present day diesel vehicles, please remember that diesel engines still have higher NVH values (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) compared to a petrol engine. This comes from the inherent diesel injection technology and not per se from the quality of manufacturing. In top end models these higher NVH values are “suppressed” by manufacturers by additional NVH shields and so an user may not notice any difference between, for eg., a BMW petrol or diesel vehicle. However when buying small and medium cars, one should really pay attention to these things. The best way is to ask for a test drive and start the car in the garage or portico of your house, where you will normally park it. You will really see a difference. You obviously don’t want to wake up your neighbour or announce yourself to the man living 8 houses down the lane.
One argument in favour of diesel engines is their capability for developing higher torques at lower speeds. This is a big advantage in city driving conditions and this, added with a VGT (variable geometry turbocharger) like in the case of a Verna, can make it an ideal car for harsh city driving conditions of bumper-to-bumper traffic, potholes and road humps. You end of changing gears less frequently and the engine turns out a far better (lower!) fuel consumption.
But please compare the actual torque values from the manufacturers catalog and also the speed at which this max. torque is developed. If required, ask the dealer to provide you the torque curve. A flatter torque curve in the region of 2000 to 3500 engine rpm is a very good bet. However, diesels suffer slightly in the department of acceleration.
After the initial aura surrounding the features, mileage and price wears out, and you have spent 4 to 6 months driving your car, you will come down to the reality of service availability and cost of service and spares. Choose a manufacturer who has good service network, 24×7 service possibilities and on-road breakdown service.
One word of caution regarding vehicles like Logan. It may be a good vehicle, I don’t know. I have not seen or drive one yet. However we have a long history of European manufacturer having tie-ups in India and eventually closing shops. We have names like Standard Herald, PAL-Fiat, PAL-Peugeot, Tata-Mercedes, etc. Fiat thrice attempted businees in India and after failing to impress, now are holding the little finger of Tatas and still surviving. Volkswagen are still dilly-dollying with the idea of setting shop in India, and will bring only their stone-age Jetta model and not the Golf and Polo models which make more sense. Mahindra earlier had a tie-up with Ford and produced Escorts, but the relationship quickly broke-up. Does anybody remember that practical vehicle called 118 NE?
Skoda is the only European manufacturer who has decently survived so far in India, but they introduced a winner called Octavia and the product is keeping the company alive. They are toying the idea of bringing Fabia (voted as the best small car in the world, 5 years in a row) for the last 2 years, but I am yet to see one on road. Except Octavia, their other models are not doing badly. Whenever GM introduces a new model, there is a lot of hype and it quickly vaporises.
I would personally put my hard earned money on a proven and stable manufacturer like Maruti or Hyundai, and compromise some feautes for a peace of mind.
Of course, everybody should have their own model for making buying decisions.
Happy motoring!!

Hi Everybody,
Good news for you.
JUST READ THIS
LOGAN EFFECT: MID-SIZE CAR MARKET SHAKES UP
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: New models, steeper interest rates and volume pressure is causing a shakeup in the lower mid-size sedan market.
Less than a fortnight after the launch of the aggressively priced Mahindra Renault Logan, a clutch of its biggest competitors are revamping their marketing strategies. That includes offering discounts and free accessories as well as rationalising the product line-up.
According to sources in the industry, Hyundai is currently displaying only its base GLE variant of the Accent but there are no discounts on that model.
When contacted, Hyundai Motor India executive director (marketing and sales) WS Min said: â??We are only displaying the Accent GLE model. We have no plans to add any more versions right now.â?
The 1.5 litre Hyundai Accent GLE base model, at Rs 5.32 lakh, is price positioned higher than the Logan. The rest of the Accentâ??s line up included the 1.6 litre GLS (Rs 6 lakh and Rs 5.82 lakh without ABS), the diesel CRDi version (Rs 6.86 lakh), the Viva (Rs 6.23 lakh and Rs 6 lakh with ABS) and the Viva CRDi (Rs 6.66 lakh). Sources say these are no longer being retailed.
As for Maruti, we spoke to a crosssection of dealers in both Delhi and Mumbai to find out the level of discounts on the Esteem. Currently, all models of the Esteem are attracting a discount of around Rs 30,000. Rival Ford Indiaâ??s Ikon is offering an MP3 players as an added accessory with the base model of the Ikon in some markets.
The Loganâ??s price positioning â?? the petrol version, in 1.4 and 1.6 litre variants , starts at Rs 4.35 lakh and goes up to Rs 5.76 lakh ex-showroom Delhi while 1.5 litre diesel version starts at Rs 5.54 lakh and goes up to Rs 6.51 lakh â?? pitches it head-to-head with the Esteem and Ikon. Itâ??s just a shade lower than the Accent base model.
The Esteem (available only in two 1.3 litre petrol versions) costs Rs 4.48 and 5.14 lakh and is just a tad more expensive than the Logan. With a Rs 30,000 discount, it will be aggressively priced vis-a-vis the Logan.
The Ikon, also kitted with a 1.3 litre gasoline engine, starts from Rs 4.76 lakh and is pricier than the Logan at the base. The petrol Indigo from Tata Motors starts at Rs 3.99 lakh while its diesel version kicks off at Rs 4.4 lakhâ??both substantially lower priced vis-a-vis the Logan.

Hi Sanjeev,
Thanx for the interesting and necessary information. I, too, am thinking of buying Logan. I had a evry good experience of Peugeot GLD. I got it very early in Feb 97 and used the same till June 2004.. over 150000 kms…, in spite of expensive spare parts.. with this experience I am looking at Logan. I also think of the advantage of CKD kit assembled in India in intial period. Better to buy early…
What is ur suggestion??

Hi Vicky,
Aveo is little costlier than Fiesta but have more option than fiesta. Fiesta market is much ahead than Aveo.
Test drive both the vehicles.
After that see the service centre where you are leaving and their sale. This really matters.
All I will say both are good cars.

Hi Everybody,
The new Renault Logan has already started giving sleepless nights to the likes of Ford and Hyundai Motor officials.
The result: car companies have fastened their belts and are trying their best to come up trumps in the sweepstakes. Similarly, Hyundai plans to launch an advanced version of Verna diesel to compete with the existing and the new cars in that segment. Mahindra Renault Logan is supposed to take on cars like Indigo, Petra and Esteem and give them a real run for their money. But even cars like Verna and Fiesta, ranked a notch higher in the price segment, could soon be sweating their guts out.
An initial glance at the specifications shows 65 bhp from a 1.5 litre diesel engine which may not be even a patch on the Verna’s brow, but it does manage to closely match the Fiesta’s 68 bhp power output. However, Logan diesel’s biggest virtue is the fact that you can buy one for Rs 5.5 lakh! Most other diesel saloons which offer near as much space and comfort, except for may be the Indigo, cost almost an additional Rs 2 lakh. Logan’s wide stance makes it look like a stubby no-nonsense vehicle, more like a hardworking middle class manâ??s car, rather than a flamboyant design in motion. The diesel-hearted Logan seems agile and sprightly in motion. It may not be a Verna CRDi, but it certainly feels nippy for the moderate 65 bhp that it produces.
It responds well to throttle demands and the evenly spread torque band, peaking at 160 Nm, means overtaking is not a problem. What more could one ask for on the Indian city roads? The clutch and gearbox are light with enough feel, and the brakes do a reasonable job, although a bit more bite would make them nicer. A bit of a problem with the floor mat getting jammed under the accelerator pedal and preventing the pedal from going all the way to the floor - a one-off problem!
With the floor mat sorted and the accelerator going all the way to the floor, the Logan certainly moved with much more enthusiasm. Seating comfort is also quite good with sculpted front seats and a wide rear bench. Under-thigh support, however, could have been better at the rear to make longer drives more comfortable.
If the car doesn’t fall apart, itâ??s good quality, never mind how soft the dash plastics are.
And the height adjust and the tacho without a redline - it’s cool that you get them at all at the price. The dash is clear and practical. The design may look plain, but it makes for a vast rear seat, with bus-like windows. It isn’t bad to drive. For one, it rides well. Correction. It rides incredibly well It handles competently too; there’s a hint of body roll, but nothing to complain about. It’s stable at high speeds, and doesn’t skitter on the now-choppy Expressway.
And it’s efficient: 19 km per litre is an astonishing figure for a saloon which is so big. At the price, you can’t even expect a better car.
P.S.: I said inexpensive, not cheap, because the two things aren’t the same. The Logan doesn’t cost much to buy, but it doesn’t cut corners. It doesn’t give you anything you don’t need, but as transport, it’s next to flawless
By sanjeev sharma on Apr 30, 2007
Hiâ?Špersons who are looking for a practical, spacious, no nonsense, value for money car, you must go in for Logan - Autocar has given the verdict recently for logan - 4 Star rating to match with verna, fiesta rating. You just cant compare logan to Ikon or esteem or accent, as these cars are getting dated. You have a clear cost saving compared to fiesta/verna without losing out on the quality, performance, specifications and features. You get almost everything in 1.6 petrol except electrically operated rear mirror and remote boot opening. The drive and handling is class of its own. Interiors are not posh as that of accent or fiesta but much bearable. Looks might not make people turn their heads neither the ergonomics but this can be overcome with huge spacing, quality drive and value for money. Overall a value for money car.

Hi Rakesh
Nice to hear from a fellow Lucknawi nawab!!
Well it seems that it will take a little time for logan to hit the likes of Hazratganj and Aliganj!
If you are keen to buy it then get it from Delhi since its launched there to the best of my knowledge.
Further, I would like you to go thru the below points on LOGAN
I have test driven petrol as well as diesel high end versions.
if there is one USP - it is Space!
However there are
many points that leave you with a feeling of riding a â??cheapâ?? sedan:
1. Basic interiors give you feel of cheap plastic with single moulding
2. Very weak AC (I drove in right at noon in Mumbai heat)
3. Distributed controls all over the front cabin to complicate driverâ??s control. Not recommended for your spouse if sheâ??s going to drive!
4. Whistle like belt noise coming on acceleration from the diesel model (even when its new!) I wonder what would happen when its old.
5. Very hard gears. The steering and gear know vibrates hard. Poor suspension. Ride was bumpy.
6. Weak / no sound proofing that gives you a lot of cabin noise. Uncomfortable for a long distance drive
To sum up, its a left hand drive car with steering on right hand side! Looks like very little thought has been given to design as well other basic factors.
TRY TO take a test drive on a steep hilly kind of road and u will see logan…(AKA DACIA which was a flagship model of a company acquired by Renault)
Lastly, I dont know how much is your budget, but mine was around 5.5 lacs on road price, and I have conveniently booked an IKON FLair (SO WHAT IF IT IS OUTDATEd, IT IS A DEPENDABLE ENGINE!!) and more so it offers amazing value for money
Do let us know how it worked out for you!
Missing lucknow since it is my hometown!!
Regards

Few things I missed on logan:
I am in great confusion that whether LOGAN is economical or costly . For 6.44 Lacs I get a BOXY looking diesel sedan which is NOT MADE FOR INDIANS. Don’t surprise, the wiper system of front-glass is suitable for left hand drive system as of in European or American countries. Here in India we have Right Hand Drive system and during rain the driver would have quite difficulty in looking right side of the front way, this could result in to serious accident. Perhaps Mahindra has ignored the modification for us to save cost, even switches of Lights, Indicators, Wipers etc. are not modified to suit we Indian,it’s on “ulta” side. you can’t operate indicators before turning while shiftig gears as because both operation will need your left hand only. In Europe the high end equivalent version of Logan Diesel is priced below 5000 pounds

Hi,
I have taken a test drive for Logan this weekend and i would say its really a value for money car. The only thing i was concerned about this car are the suspensions. They dont seem to be that great. The suspension that Logan uses are interlinked and not individual unlike a maruti baleno or verna.Hence a bit of a crack in the road and you can feel the jerk.
Also after a span of 4 weeks the condition of the test vehicles is not that good. The suspensions seem to be pretty weak. Thats the only concern that i have right now.

hi sanjeev
i went for a test drive of Lagon 1.5 diesel engine. i found that while driving the gear lever vibarates like the same in the bolero but the drive was good. well the company is giving only 1- 2 km drive. in that we cant judge the cars potential on the road. Please comment ont he vibration of the gear lever.

Hi All,
As most of you have mentioned, even my budget is 5.5 lakhs and I am looking at economy and looks. I had a test ride on Esteem and Tata Indigo diesel and had almost made up my mind on Indigo since Esteem is a bit too low for me. Also I felt more comfortable and roomy in Indigo.
How is indigo placed as compared to Logan since I saw that the variant of Logan (diesel) does not have many features which same variant of indigo offers.
Anyone having an Indigo diesel - pl. share your reviews on the performance of the car 2/3 years down the line.
I would like to take a decision on whether to wait and watch the market on logan or go in for an Indigo diesel.

Hi All,
Thanks to all for providing such great info.
I’m having some decent and small confusion.
1)My budget is not at all more than 5.5 lacs (if i can get something below than this its great)
2)Daily travelling not more than 35kms
3)Will love to go on highway at least once in a month.
4)My preferences: Value for Money, Cost & Fuel efficient, Maintenance, Servicing .
Which car would be better for me except Swift (I dont like the model at all)
Thanks

Hi Amit,
Looking at your prefrences i think Swift is the best bet for you, please read below as to why
Value for Money : It has got the highest acceleration in the mid size cars see the comparision with a few cars
Swift 12.9 Secs (Time taken to reach 100km/hr)
Honda City 14 seconds
Esteem 14 secs
Logan 15.7 Secs
Santro 17 secs
Alto 21 secs
Seeing this one feature you should be able to guess, how pleasurable it would be to drive a swift on highway, You can easily beat most of the midsized cars when put to race with Swift.
Cost & Fuel efficient
Fuel Efficiency
Mileage (Highway) 15.8 km/liter
Mileage (City) 11.5 km/liter
Mileage (Overall) 12.6 km/liter
Maintenance Servicing
Maruti is the best bet for reliablity for this feature
Well also dislike the look and feel of Swift but its technical specifications are AMAZING.
while talking about the numbers w.r.t. specs i am assuming that specs given on carwale.com are correct, I have not taken a drive of swift yet, hence placing my comments on behalf of Tech specs from Carwale.
Sanjeev please correct me if i have wrong impression of Swift specially w.r.t. acceleration

See sir, very clearly let me tell you Logan car is for middle class family who want to have sedan car between 4.5- 5.5 lacs.(NECESSITY but not LUXURIOUS) Power steering, AC and big space, fuel economy thats all & above all A BIG CAR for middle class family(Max. population)
But I will suggest you that have a test drive of both the cars and then decide which car you should go for and moreover try SX4 maruti. Fiesta VS SX4.

I am a bit confused here …. plesae help!….
for 1.4 GLE petrol Logan .. its costing 5.5 lac on road and Ikon special edition 6.00 lacs …….

All I wanted to know is … is it worth buying logan for 5.5 ( considering the ride quality with ford ) or is it worth speding 6 lacs for ikon flair spec …

1.TEST DRIVE THESE VEHICLES.
2.CHECK SERVICE STATIONS.

My budget is 6 lacs …. and how much is sx4 … i have seen the car and is awesome ……. but i thought it might be high priced ……..
thank u for the reply……..
I would love to go for logan or ikon … but … when it comes to logan…… i am only worried on the part that the sound proofing in the car is not done perfectly for cost cutting ……… one thing I hate in cars is if it makes some kinda wired noises……….
so ignorable is the sound in logan according to you?
and more over .. in logan i aint getting any accessires from the company at all ……. why is that…. i was thinking if the car is launched newly they needed to have some cool accessories gifted………
In my home town … we have hundai service station… maruti ….. and also how about accent GLE … ???? is it better than IKON and LOGAN .. so what if it is all ready old in the market ??????
waiting for your reply sir….
Thanks in advance !!!!!!

Hi Avinash,
There are some demerits of Logan. In my opinion they launched this vechicle keeping this think in their mind that with this price people will have sedan car. Gone those days when people buy car for necessity. Now people are more intelligent and want luxury. There is no fun buying chair having thorn(s). I don’t know what Mahindera has done.
SX4 Starts from 6.28 to 7.34. Just check Prices on net.
Accent GLE is good car. Sparepart wise that is costly.
Go for a good car because you are putting your money.
Spend money for comfort.

I make 2/3 long distance trips a year averge of 2,000 kms per trip. otherwise the car would make only about 500 kms a month
Would it be worth going for Diesel version of Logan. I had a look at Logan last week and found it spacious. Also looking at car which has hight due to back ache. Technical aspects to be worked out. Pls provide your feedback

Hi everyone,
I thought you might be interested in getting some comments on the logan from someone having owned this car for 3 years. I live in Germany and bought it as a 2nd car here. since I’ve lived in Delhi for 2 years I know the roads and can compare the logan to my esteem which I drove when living in Delhi. What I can say is that the logan was 100% reliable over the past 3 years, only the windscreen had to be replaced because it was hit by a stone. I’m quite happy with the car, it’s spacious, comfortable and easy to use. Compared to an Esteem it is of course a much more modern design. Some said, that this was a Dacia design, later taken over by Renault. Well this is not true. The car was designed and developed entirely by Renault after they bought the Dacia company and it is based on the latest Clio/Twingo/Modus platform. The rather angular design also has it’s advantages. Keep in mind that in Delhi traffic you do get small dents which are much easier to repair on a design like this than on a round shape. Of course I cannot comment on Mahindra dealers and their service but hope this is still some help to you..

Dear guys, this is such a candid site. I owned a mahindra classic jeep till one week back and i loved it .The only thorn in the flesh was the service rendered by TVS, the authorised dealer.I have booked a swift diesel VDi,although I am not happy with the low slung appearance of the vehicle and the road clearance. The ford ikon is a good buy but the track record of Ford in India is not great and they have frequently left Ford owners high and dry(Ford Escort). The skoda Fabia will be more expensive and looks almost like the Swift. Maruti has a good track record which makes Swift diesel a good buy but I sincerely hope this diesel crdi engine inspired by Fiat is durable. Whats the maximum number of kilometres done by Swift diesel so far, without major repairs?can anyone vouch for the toughness of this engine?

Can anyone tell me whether the swift crdi engine is durable?Whats the maximum number of kilometres done by a swift diesel vehicle to your knowledge without major glitches? The Mahindra Logan I guess is going to be sold in south India by TVS and that would put many people offbecause of the deplorable quality of service rendered.I have booked a swift diesel but may need to wait for at leat 2 months to get it .

Well, I wanted to buy a top of line Getz Prime GSX.
Would have made a full payment right there and
then. But it seems Hyundai wants to talk about their cars rather than sell them - I was told to
wait 2 months to take delivery. Absolute nonsense.
Let’s try the competitor - the Maruti Swift ZXi.
Well, evidently that takes 2 months too.
So it seems both companies can spend bg bucks to talk about all the fanstastic features their cars
have, they cannot deliver cars to customers when
they come.
It’s better to spend a little more money and go for a Honda or a Ford. Maybe they are real car companies who really have cars to sell…
Sincerely,
Irritated in Delhi

Iâve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.
Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:
http://tinyurl.com/38sojf
This is where youâre going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if youâre a savvy shopper.
Next, thereâs the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit - Iâve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.

We M/s. Envirotech Gensets Pvt. Ltd.introduce ourselves as an excellent Acoustical Enclosuer and Anechoic/ Sound Testing Chamber Manufacturer. The quality with which Acoustical Enclosuer Sound Testing Chamber, Anechoic Chamber etc. are manufactured, is really commendable. Anechoic Chamber / Sound Testing Chamber is required for engineering precision grade sound power measurement. Such a chamber consists of a high insertion loss outer envelope constructed of modular steel Panels with an interior cladding of specific sound absorbing material in multi layers on roof, walls and floors.
These Chambers find their application for sound power testing, sound intensity, where there primary function is to control ambient noise and to increase the accuracy of intensity measurement by reducing sound reflections. Such as in automotive sector, air-conditioner manufacturing units, speaker testing, refrigeration units, fan, motors & compressors manufacturing units etc.
Other environments usually provide a moderate degree of sound isolation at best. Noise from building mechanical systems and here by activities intrude to some degree. The degree of acceptability of the situation depends on the relative levels generated by the equipment under test and the providing ambient. Thus, itâs more likely that such a space will be acceptable for a loud sound than for a quiet one.
An Anechoic Chamber / Sound testing Chamber is deigned to provide a normal - incidence sound absorption coefficient greater than 0.99 for all frequencies down to its design cut off frequency. The design and production of effective Anechoic Chamber / Sound testing Chamber is an extremely difficult task and is best left to acoustic chamber manufactures
Please forward your enquiries of above, our qualified & experienced technical executive shall call for discussion & suggestion on complete solution to your sound testing / control problems

Hi All,
So many goodies about Logan, it is a very practical car for the middle men. Fuel Efficient, Spacious and good VFM.
The only thing that concerns me is the availability of spares. I heard that Renault tie up with Mahindra is not doing good and may break up anytime. So how is Mahindra answering this problem to the consumers. Does Mahindra have ownership of all the spares that usually need replacement or is it still dependant on Renault. With this doubt in Mind, it is really difficult to decide on Logan.
