Hyundai launches Getz CRDi (diesel) in India

September 27, 2007 – 9:46 pm by Ashish Jha

Hyundai Getz Prime CRDi LaunchAh what a wait it has been! It was expected a long back, but the Koreans were perhaps occupied with other, more important things. But well, now it is finally here… and how!

It is essentially the same engine that powers the Hyundai Verna CRDi. What it means is that the motor is a 1.5L, 110PS, 235Nm monster! Reads fine when a car like Verna houses such a unit, but get this - Getz Prime is a hatchback, and it has this very engine powering it now! Boy-o-boy, it is going to be fireworks!

Performance figures of the Verna speak volumes of this engine’s performance and one can only begin to think what it will do to a hatchback. And then your thinking power gives up! I am not kidding, one cannot even think what an insane performance it will endow the Getz Prime with. Wait till we find out by putting this car through the paces!

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. is nation’s second largest auto-maker and the largest car-exporter. Its success was writted by a small-car which, when launched, had contentious looks and did not go well with a lot of people owing to its styling. But it went on to set sales chart afire and, nine years on, still remains one of the highest selling cars in the country. The success of Santro was followed by the Accent. Though the same cannot be said about the Sonata and the brawny SUV, Terracan.

The Getz Prime too did not do well as far as the sales numbers go. In order to push the Getz, Hyundai launched it with Santro’s engine to boost the fuel efficiency which the 1.3L engine lacked. And now comes this - the 1.5L diesel motor that, we suspect, is going to kill everything in its category in a drag race.

The mechanicals are going to be more or less the same so we can expect the usual things, not-so-spirited handling and a boring steering. But this apart, the space inside will be good and the suspension would soak in the road-undulations well.

Will this car be a perfect example of a sheep in a wolf’s clothing? We’ll find out soon.

  2. Would it not be bit foolish to put such over-powered/over-sized engine as it would give much lower fuel efficiency? Yes, there will be minority who would are power hungry. But majority look for right balence of performance, fuel economy and cost. In fact, majority would more look from fuel, economy, price and decide.

I am not a Maruti/Suzuki fan but still SWIFT will win over GETZ because of pricing and fuel economy. I have booked a SWIFT Diesel with reluctance. I don’t like some of SWIFT things like kiddo luggage space, bulky size, poor rear/side visibility yet this is the best value in the category.

  3. The GETZ Crdi sounds like putting a Ferrari engine in a Premier Padmini !!! I only hope it does’nt actually take off at a max. speed of 110 BHP !!! At that speed will the hatchback cope with road handling and safety ?? I’m sure all these aspects must have been considered but still I feel what Hyundai should have done for a price sensitive market like India, it should have given a 1.4 litre or a 1.3 litre Crdi with a superior tweaking of the turbo and this would have pepped up its mileage to say about 14/15 kmpl in the city and about 18-20 kmpl on the highways. The price would thus have been a tad lower and more competitive with the SWIFT CRDI. But with the 1.5 litre offering, the customer may look at the LOGAN Crdi as a closer and better option. The Indian mindset is clear - they go for a low hit on the pocket and aesthetics come second or third to the mind. That’s why the Indica Diesel clicked in a big way. Admittedly, the Diesel Indica is certainly not sophisticated. But thats the way the Indian mind works!!

  4. Agree with Deepak.such huge &powerful engine can create imbalance. The Getz is soft hatchbach.I am afraid about balance&success. God bless the customers.

  5. I think this car rocks. Because people like me who drives 50kms a day in city and want small car with powerful engine, good ride quality, big space and good interiors, This car fulfill all constraints.

  6. the engine specs looks insane.. wht abt the price/??

By kushal on Oct 2, 2007

  7. Mileage no less than 14-15 km/l.

Ferrari engine in Padmini ? that’s quite exaggeration.

Do you know the wheel base of Getz ?
Do you know the Kerb weight of Getz ?

Its all equal to a large size sedan ok ?..
Pricing ? You can’t compare to Swift at all.

For the things Getz offers, it is the best priced.

Its not a car for “value for money/price primary” people for sure.

Its classic premium hatch where as Swift is not a premium hatch.Only Skoda Fabia could be in the class of Getz.

    cheers

  8. With such powerful engine how about Noise & Refinement (Basically NVH)?

By Ravi on Oct 3, 2007

  9. Oh What a move from Hyundai. Let me think once again. one more chance to think. No No I need some time to think.

CAR FOR RALLY RACES OR TO PULL ELEPHANTS (SITTING IN CAR)

What is this to pull a small cart you need 100 horses. They have put the verna configured engine.(See verna engine specifications i.e power, torque, bore etc etc.
Simply Getz CRDi With Verna Engine

I think they have lost their mental balance after drip in sale.

They will be in the same boat in the coming future as Ford Fusion 1.4 TDCi is and later on WILL NO LONGER EVEN A SHOW PIECE like Fiat Palio 1.9D.

    These are my wordings as

SKODA FABIA and Fiat Punto is coming.

See these days you can’t fool people especially your customer.

You are presenting such a thing which is hardly to digest and what about the price without ABS, Air bags and etc. Its better put little money and have sedan car.

Anyway best of luck to Hyundai and many many HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS for launching this vehicle and ESPECIALLY to that person who is going to have this vehicle.

    Cheers and happy Driving.

  10. Getz with 110BHP no new to market. Its been highly successful in Europe and South Africa with no imbalance/over power/NVH problem as few folks are concerned about.
Best is to take a test drive, if you have budget to buy this premium hatch.
It was won greenest(emmision) and best mileage car beating even Toyota Prius(Hybrid car) in England in 2006.

The concept of premium hatch like Getz/Fabia/Punto/ is new to Indian consumers who are majority Value for money catogory because of valid strong economic reason.

Where as in Europe, premium hatch is very much prefered.

Only time would decide the fate of expensive premium hatches who would come at cost of/more basic sedan like AccentGLE,Aveo,Fiesta basic petrol,Logan,Indigo.

But I feel, Getz diesel might to do well.

    Cheers

  11. I think its about time the getz got this engine upgrade, plonking a 1.5 l engine with higher power output is nothing new or nothing to be worried about. The car is doing well here in europe , I have seen it and its ok , except that theres a lot of body roll , the vw golf has a much more powerful engine and has almost the same dimensions as the getz…so guys relax..its for the best…cheers-karan

  12. Great news for everyone

Hyundai’s is offering an impressive discount of Rs 25000 for its flagship model Santro. For the Accent sedan Hyundai offers a special price of Rs 4.99 lakh for a select few days. Hyundai is giving out a Rs 10,000 exchange bonus scheme on its Verna and Getz Prime models. For the 1.3L Hyundai Getz discounts upto Rs35000 and an exchange bonus of Rs20000 is offered. Additionally you can save upto 4% of the loan you made.

Maruti Suzuki’s offers a rebate of Rs45000 for its hot hatch Zen Estilo. Maruti Suzuki’s best selling models - WagonR carries a discount of Rs 40,000 and the Alto Rs 34,000 while the old war horse Maruti 800 is off by Rs 25,000. Maruti mid-size sedan Esteem offers an impressive discount of Rs 56,000. Many of these schemes are already on and will continue though the festive period.

Ford ruled out mazda for Indian market and said it has no plans to bring the Focus sedan to India in the near future. Ford India is considering a powertrain facility in India as opposed to import. Currently Ford imports engines from Thailand and Europe.

Hyundai has finally made a fullstop to the rumours on santro diesel. We have no plans of a diesel version of the Santro” HMIL managing director H S Lheem said. Non-availability of a 1.1 litre diesel engine is said to be the prime reason for shelving the plans of a diesel Santro by the manufacturer. But as expected, after tasting the sucess of CNG Santro Hyundai plans LPG variant of santro. The LPG Santro is expected to be out by the first half of 2008.Similar to Wagon R Duo, Santro may also sport a similar 32 litre LPG toroidal.

Higher-end version of Tata’s 1 lakh car will have Manual transmission, air-conditioning, power windows and power steering.

By Sanjeev Sharma on Oct 8, 2007

  13. Sanjeev, about the offers, it is the tsales trick of Maruti - keep the prices artificially high wherever possible and if not sold, give discount/freebies “offer”. Alto is priced close to Santro without comparable comfort/space/power! Estillo and Wagon R are priced 50k more than Santro for comparable features but smaller size!

On the otherhand, just because Getz is priced higher doesn’t automatically make it “premium”. Getz GVS diesel vs. Swift VDi comparision shows both are quite comparable in features.

Getz has 2.25 inch longer wheelbase
    Getz is 50kg heavier
    Getz has ajustable steering (tilt?)
    Getz has rear defogger
Getz claims 110 hp compared to 75 hp of SWIFT. However need to really drive both to get real feel of the “extra” hp. Felt SWIFT diesel was quite nimble and quick.
Getz has slightly bigger boot (70 litres more)
Swift has better ground clearance and shorter turning radius.
    Swift has tubeless tires (standard).
Swift has front fog lamps (standard?).
Swift comes with immobilizer and it is an option in Getz.
Swift will definitely will beat Getz on fuel economy based on results claimed by Swift vs. Verna (though Getz could be bit more efficient because of lesser weight compared to Verna).

By Sreenivasa Madenahally on Oct 8, 2007

  14. WELL I THINK,GETZ WILL BE THE BEST CAR IN THIS SEGMENT,WELL I THINK THEY WILL PROVIDE ABS AS STANDARD,AND THE GETZ CAN BEAT LARGER CARS LIKE SKODA LAURA OR THE FORD FIESTA WHICH COMES AROUND 7 LACKS(BASE VERSION)AND THERE R NO DIESELS IN THIS CLASS,WHICH CAN TAKE U OUT THE CHART 110BHP FOR A HATCH BACK,AND LET ME TELL U GETZ HAS BEEN A HUGE HIT AL OVER THE WORLD,WELL SWIFT CANT BE COMPARED TO GETZ DIESEL IN PERFORMANCE,SPACE,RELIABILITY,WELL I CAN SAY IM THE PROUD OWNER OF THE GETZ 1.3,IF U WANT POWER,LOOKS,SPACE,I RECOMMEND U TO GO FOR THE GETZ,WELL IF U R SPENDING THAT MUCH,I DONT THINK HTERE R CARS WHICH R MORE POWERFUL THAN THE GETZ 1.5 OR THE VERNA!!!

  15. Its confirmed,

Getz Prime GVS CRDi do NOT have,

    1.ABS.
    2.Alloy wheels.
    3.Spoiler.
    4.Rear wiper.
    5.Fog Lamps. and few more

I was expecting it to match atleast GLS features with Alloy and ABS as options.
I feel they might launch new trim with above features after 6 months or so depending on demand.

Its disheartening to see that, delivery time is only after next month (first shipment), If you book now, then you would two months to get this car.

Very bad planning by Hyundai as customers expects to get the cars after launch.
Launch and whole thing has been handled very very poorly for Getz Diesel.

    Ashish,

Any guess on what could be the approx. city mileage with AC on ?

    cheers

  18. Life-cycle of Hyundai Getz is reaching the end by the summer of 2008 as Hyundai is working hard to replace it with this Hyundai i20 and the first five-door models should arrive in dealers before the end of 2008.
Positioned below the brand new i30. Power between 70 and 110 bhp in Petrol segment and 88 and 110 bhp in turbodiesel. A new 1.2-litre petrol engine will spearhead the line-up, while a revised version of the firm’s existing 1.4 unit will also be offered. Diesel power will come from the current 1.5-litre CRTD.

Totally modified model from inside as well from outside as it will be bigger and provide more cabin space. There will be high-quality trim inside and a more flexible seating layout.

Price of i20 is expected to be slightly more expensive than the Getz to reflect its increased size and improved interior quality

Wierd expectations I must say. Jaybharat guys cant even tell when they can show us the damn car !!
Anyways. IS THERE ANY NEWS ON HYUNDAI ADDRESSING THE BRAKE DISC PROBLEM OR TWEAKING THE ENGINE FOR GETTING A LESSER BHP THEREBY GIVING A HIGHER MILEAGE PROBABLY?
