Maruti Swift Diesel Launched, Finally!

January 25, 2007 – 5:57 pm by Banwari Lal Sharma

Finally Maruti launched Swift Diesel in India. Introductory price for Swift Diesel is 4.68 lakh ex-showroom Delhi for the base version. The car is available for sale in two versions, LDi and VDi which are quite equivalent to LXi and VXi respectively in terms of features provided.

As I wrote in my earlier post, Maruti Swift Diesel has got a 1.3 liter (1248cc), multi-injection, DOHC DDiS engine which produces 76ps of power and 190Nm of torque. To me, as of now, engine seems good enough. I hope noise-level would be quite low and fuel efficiency would be good enough. Dimensions of Swift Diesel are exactly same as Swift Petrol, however, weight has gone up by approx 85 kgs. I couldn’t find any difference in features provided in similar Petrol and Diesel versions. The only apparent addition in features-list seems to be Immobilizer. Those who prefer safety and luxury, might be disappointed considering the fact that there is no Diesel version equivalent to ZXi. In nutshell, no airbags, alloy wheels, climate control or keyless entry for Swift Diesel!

Maruti Swift LDi’s ex-showroom price in Mumbai is Rs.4,84,961 (on-road Rs.5,40,000 approx) and Maruti Swift VDi’s ex-showroom price in Mumbai is Rs.5,14,400 (on-road Rs. 5,73,000 approx). Prices for Diesel variants are kept around 70,000 rupees higher than their Petrol siblings. Prices seems good, however, could have been at lower side by 10,000 rupees. A price difference of 60,000 rupees in Petrol and Diesel versions could have been good enough. Moreover, Maruti is saying “these are introductory prices.” No doubt, if Swift Diesel sells well, they can increase the prices further!

  2. I expect a lukewarm response to the diesel. Somehow the profile of people who buy Swifts do not seem like people who want Diesel economy. The 80hp petrol still offers a lot more pep. The looks also dont seem like that of a diesel vehicle. At close to Rs.600000 on road, it seems too much price to pay for a small car when you can get a base version of Aveo or Fiesta for 50K more.

  4. @Banwari: I echo your opinion that the price premium for the diesel version over its petrol sibling is on the higher side. 50k would have been good enough according to me. I still think that will not be a deterrent for the buyers. After all it will only increase the EMI by around 1.5 k per month ;-)

@Vinay: I initially had the same apprehension regarding the Swift Diesel; but its real target is the people who are looking for the right combination of style, performance and economy. I personally know quite a few people who held back from buying Swift Petrol because of bad fuel efficiency. I dont think such people would mind the negligible 4 bhp difference in performance.

Anyways, lets hope for the best. Cheers :-)

  5. Hi,

I am planning to buy Swift deisel vdi, but they say that ABS is not available. But in the specs it says for VDI ABS is optional.

Is it something which is released later or is it an accessory which i can purchase seperately, is it not available at all.

    please reply

  6. Swift VDi with ABS will be avaialble after Mar’07. Also, MUL is planning to release 2 variants in next fiscal and should be equivalent to Petrol ZXi.

  8. good info ,reliable car ,what do u suggest for fabia diesel small segment

By lobo on Feb 13, 2007

  9. Fabia is a superb car.. handsome than swift
spacious than any other car in this segment..
the car is expected to give fiesta like mileage…
the CAR is also powerful !!!

fabia diesel wont be launched this year anyway
skoda is not able to bring its price down immediately

now the lauch is expected by jan 2008
but i feel the launch date will again be postponed.. else they will launch it with a higher price tag

so i feel that fabio will hit the indian market by the year 2008 … maybe in the 2 or 3rd quater

    ITZ A LONG WAIT STILL

  14. Hello. I’m currently having a Maruti Zen and a Honda City ZX - the Automatic Transmission. I’m planning to sell my Zen. I’m Planning to Buy a Maruti Swift - The Diesel Version (VDi). My query is “Will I be facing Problems in my Diesel Car if I don’t use it everyday?” Because My Car Usage is not that high.
On an Average, I drive a 500km in the City per Month. Is Diesel good for me?

    Kindly Suggest.

  18. hi friends,
i have bought Maruti swift LDI a week ago its a excellent car with stylishlook…very spacious..mileage is very gud 22 ….i love to drive this car when compare to other cars…it has got uniqe style….real worth to buy this car..

By Reddy on May 24, 2007

  19. Immobilizers are relatively new types of car theft deterrents. The basic idea is the device immobilizes the car’s engine, transmission, fuel supply, or some other critical moving part. This keeps a feature from being able to move or start the car.
