Tata launches Indigo with longer wheelbase, Indigo XL

January 22, 2007 – 6:58 pm by Banwari Lal Sharma

Indigo XL ExteriorTata guys seem to do a lot in a very short span of time. We are hearing something new from them almost everyday. The latest news is, Tata launched longer-wheelbase Indigo, the Indigo XL finally last week. Tata had revealed this car in Auto Expo-2006, New Delhi last year. You must have heard of Indigo LWB? It’s the same!

Indigo XL, as per its name (eXtra Large), has got 200mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor, as a result car’s length has increased to 4377mm. Other dimensions of the car have been kept intact. Indigo has been considered as the most spacious car in its class, now with wheelbase of 2650mm, it has left no room for criticism in this regard. Refined interiors, upholstery and equipment levels give a luxurious feel to driver and passengers. As far as equipments are concerned, consider Indigo XL as an successor of Indigo SX-series, a series of cars virtually no-one bought due to its high prices.

Indigo XL InteriorApart from wheelbase, for the first time Indigo has got major changes in engine too. Indigo XL’s 1396cc, 16valve, DOHC, DICOR (Direct Injection COmmon Rail) Diesel engine can produce up to 70ps of power (same as non-DICOR Indigo) and up to 140Nm of torque (15Nm more than non-DICOR Indigo). I was expecting Indigo DICOR to have a little more power (at least 15-20ps more), extra 15Nm will not do, I guess. The latest Common Rail Diesel technology promises great refinement in NVH (Noise-Vibrations-Harshness), fuel economy and performance, but 70ps? I say again, Dicor Indigo had to be a bit more powerful, oh Tata, are you not intending to sell it?

1396cc, 16valve, DOHC, Petrol engine can produce up to 101ps of power (16ps+) and 124Nm of torque (17Nm+). So, Tata is concentrating on its Petrol cars? 101ps from an Indigo is like surprise of the day. Petrol version is promising one, no doubt.

Now, the most important part of the story: Unfortunately, it’s a sad one! Indigo XL is priced very high i.e. 6.7 lakh for Petrol and 7.35 lakh for Diesel, ex-showroom Delhi. You can read it as approx 7.5 lakh on-road Mumbai for Petrol and 8.25 lakh on-road Mumbai for Diesel. 8 lakh plus for an Indigo? Yes, you got it right! So, Tata has left Fiesta behind and competing with Verna VGT as far as price is concerned? Who’s going to buy it, I am wondering?

  3. Tata’s has shot itself in the foot again. They’ve been doing it with increasing success ever since they face-downed (as against lifted) the Indigo V2. Till recently they had left the Indigo alone as the original italian design. But recently they had to put this under their dirty knives too, making it look characterless. If the LX had been priced at the same price as the SX, sales would have spurted, AND it would give people sufficient reason to look beyond the Logan for their first diesel sedan.

I agree with you about the power. They announced that they would be working on CRDi versions of their engines in early 2004. It took M&M no more than 16 months to convert their old pushrod diesel into a perky common rail and bring it to production. Tata’s has been at it for nearly three years, and all they’ve managed is the same 70ps (maybe at a lower RPM?). The Fiesta has a great refined diesel though it too us underpowered at 70hp. The Fiesta is much wider than the Indigo and has great driving ergonomics.

Logan is going to come with a smooth 70hp common rail and whip the socks out of Tata’s.

  4. Price of this new variant is high. I may have considered purchase of this variant if the price was less than Rs 5.50 lakhs.

  7. I visited nawab motors, noida the dealer for TATA in noida/g.noida. great interiors, par excellent performance. The price tag is too much for the car and may either compel TATA to reduce the price or may go out of the market even before it takes off. should have been around 6 to 6.25 laks on road

  8. I agree with most of the comments here about power & performance & price of Tata cars. Tata definitely does not have the kind of fame about quality & relaibility as Japanese cars. The only way Tata can sell cars is by providing comparable performance at 10-20% less price. That would be called Mera Bharat Mahan. Otherwise Tata can be out of business soon. The only savior seems to me is their much awaited 1 lakh car. I really donot see Tata’s succeeding in Indian hot car market. Most likely Fiat Punto will save them.

  11. hello there..wat u people r talking abt i dunno knw.. tell me abt a car who has got features such as these and in this price bracket ?? i mean look at Honda City which falls in the same price range.. it hasnt got 25% of the features of wat indigo XL is offering u except its brand HONDA. I think if only there would have been ABS and aair bags no car would have come within touching distance of the indigo XL.4get abt the deisel version and look at the petrol one.wat do u then expect from a 7 lakh car ???

  12. Tata Indigo definitely has problems with their Design and Quality Assurance areas. They have been very reluctant to admit problems in their engines and other areas. It is a long way for Tata to reach the position of “never-fail” kind of quality.
Till such time, the fancy features (as in the indigo XL) really do not make any sense. The heart and the nervous system need to be in top order before you start building on your body. Else, you are heading for an early disaster!!

  14. I also agree with comment s as stated by earlier commentators that above car is under powered and Price is very higher side. Nobode wants to purchases tata car if it costs mote then Rs.7to 7.50 lacs (on road). If tate reduce this prices this can compate Fiesta of Verna. People may think to buy this car only if they are getting more comfort level car, cheaper as compared to other car, definately they may thik to buy this car. Power ov VERNA is un believelable and very good as compared ot XL. LCD costs only 30-35 thousand. Colorus of this car is also not attractive. Colours should be improved and those colours should not be offered in INDICA or INDIGO LX or other models.

Most important is desh board and front view. Desh board of Indica and XL is same type. TATA should give different design to desh board and front(bonnet) of XL . No one can differ from front side whether it is Indaca or XL Indogo for that a person is spending Rs. 8 lac.

  16. Hi guys,
Went to c the new indiog xl. the features it gives are mind blowing really. Though the highest version is 8.34 it has got features really like camry and other versions. You can get the a verna or fiesta with the same price but they don’t have so many feautres.

  18. Hey Freinds,I’m out for more! We first had looks at different cars. But they all felt the same to us!
So we then scouted the WEB, where we found the car of the millennium….Indigo XL.Hey I saw some comments by a person called VINOD, I think he doesn’t know much about TATA’s spleandour: Indigo XL. Well, Here are a few points to support my view on XL.It has the longest body of all the sedan cars of the 8-9 lakh range and offers many mind blowing features too!Take for example:Compact DVD player and integrated HI-Def speakers and Two L.C.D monitors,A car speaker system and a bluetooth compatible cell phone with an exclusive Nokia charger and speaker case,ORVMs(Rear view mirrors) with side repeater lights, fully refurbished Head and Tail lights with jewel effect,Rear A/C Console with seperate control,Vast legroom,6 way powered front seats with electrical button control,Seats of leather with cup holders and armrest,Three electrical equipment chargers,A chiller box in the dash board,Chrome embellishments adron the body-from the satin painted grille to the trunk,Rub rail and the Scuff plates,9 spoke, 14 inch alloy wheels on tubeless tyres with hydrogen fills, very good ground clearence and simply bambastic engines for two versions: 16 valve Twin Cam 1.4 litre petrol and 101 PS of refined power with silent high torque 1.4 litre 70 PS DICOR(Direct Injection Common Rail). Not only this a lot more too…!
You have to see to beleive these features!
So taking all this into account we got one Indigo Xl car Grand DICOR Diesel,Royal Burgundy colour. It simply rocks! Bye!
It is better than all the sedan cars in it’s class because it offers cutting edge features along with stupendous features!!

  19. Hello there,
Hey Vinod I guess you are going goho. Just a piece of rusty metal box in the name of a car which is painted
in dusty colours with a fake promising quality assurance may please you??? And what do you expect in design, do you want an ambassador or Taxi design in the car,Or does the entire TATA logo dissapoint your mind, you simian(monkey)!
Or are you feeling bad that you can’t get one of the new eye catching and adorable Indigo XL. The look is so sleak and soft, while the quality and guarantee assurance is very trustworthy and promising and not as lame as your dream car(Rusty and worthless) and a incompetent. Well,TATA is known all over the world in various takes of buisiness and quality profile.Hey I love Bio-logy but your review is dum, because the cardiac system of the car, That is the Engine is pretty enhanced than Fiesta,Verna,Aveo,Optra and even Honda City.It has a DICOR and Twin Cam engines respectivley for diesel and Petrol, which are designed for total perfomance and perfection. It simply is like an ocean in the middle of a desert, both nourishing and refreshing, as well as adding flavours to the Indian Pride of self-manufacture and purchasing. The Nervous system (The Interior Features)are just immaculate and charming,TATA offers a vast and wide range of features and interiors along with space too.Sorry for being rude friend! I just felt that a really good car is not to be blamed, thats all! Infact Indigo XL is the first Indian limousine,So feel proud to be an Indian! KUDOS! to the TATA FRANCHISE AND ORGANISATION! bye!

  20. Hey G.Sharma check your english before you blame something! We don’t have of place here for false valus and jealousy! After all Time to Time TATA motors have had a splendid reputation and you’re just nonody to them.Your’e not woth a while and hideous. So, just take a look at the Brochure and the humpty features the car offers and take a test drive and I’m sure you’ll feel sorry for what you said earlier about this car! This car has got the best price for what it offers, both good looking and entirely different from Indigo LX and SX.
It rocks the base, who would hate a car with lovely features like in Mercedes and BMW cars which cost over 40 lakhs!to just 8.5 or 7.9 lakhs only!So quit complaining and go for a drive and feel it’s charm! Bye!

  21. Yes ofcourse ”Thambu” the Star Hotels in Madurai and States like Andra,Karnataka,Kerala and Maharashtra, and in metropoliten cities like Mumbai,Chennai,Cochin,Delhi,Poona…etc. have this car running astride and as enchanting as a heavenly unicorn over a paradise! Why do Taxi drivers prefer this car have seen Taxi drivers prefer Fiesta,Fusion,Optra,City,Civic,Aveo or Verna,No they don’t! So why do they have to prefer a car made for Buisiness class travel and made for premier people?
We have tourism organisers streaming for this car in the market, because tourists love car with so many comfort options, luxury and space(legroom and seats),chillers(fridge work),Rear A/C console with seperate control and dvd players and T.Vs and good look!
It has very good safety options too:we have an engine immobiliser,Intrusion key alarm and Seat belt alarm too.So.it’s the best in all the takes!

  22. Hey A.Abisek Raj,

Are you on Tata’s payroll or something. I am not in India but was planning to get a car for my parents. Took a look at IndigoXL and decided against it. It is grossly underpowered for that price range and the features(except for the longer wheelbase) that they are raving about can be put into any car for a few thousand rupees(heck, maybe a few lacs, but who cares). If a car can not move its ass, its of no use. I have had someone in my family who owned the Indica few years ago and to tell you the truth, it was a sucker.

Looks-wise, this car is a strict no no. My family has tall people but I am not very sure if many Indians need so much leg room. So, who was this car designed for?? And for that price, no ways. It is after all, just a Tata.

  25. Hi Abisek,

Good on you mates for bashing those tata haters! I am planning to buy the Classic Dicor , the grand is a bit too steep for my pockets ! I think small cosmetic modifications inside should do the trick, i dont need the ultra cool dvd/ music system but i could do with the cell phone charger and stuff. Lets see but thanks for the excellent review you made my day !

P.S. - For the guy who said ” who needs so much leg room” you would be bitching your head off if they had given you the legroom of a verna so be grateful for a change !

  26. Hi,

I had a look at the car and it gave an awesome feeling.
Leg room for all the passengers is simply great. Interiors have improved a lot, however, some of the old things like digital clock and the A/C ducts could have been replaced with newer designs. Power is low. I am not sure about the mileage. I am thinking whether to go for a SX4 or XL Grand Petrol. To be fair, XL is a car that has to be taken seriously.

  27. For all those who are looking for a good Sedan in the range 6 to 7 lakhs, Tata Indigo Models are here with good features.

And for all who comment bad on Indigo, you always have other Brand models like Honda, Audi, Bentley and others.. :)

  28. Hi All,

People who wanted to buy TATA CAR at range of 6-6.5 lacs, which should be Big car, Diesel, Good mileage. I suggest go for new TATA INDIGO FACELIFT - LX, which comes in two Diesel Variant TDI and DICOR. All details is available at http://indigo.tatamotors.com/TataMotors/Indigo/AboutIndigo.aspx.

I got one and its around 1 month old, got 1st servicing done. I visited TIRUPATHI and my wife too drove around 50KMS on highway. She too enjoy it driving BIG car after driving SANTRO for couple of years.

I suggest people who wanted to go for BIG segment car, should habe atleast 2 years experience driving small car like SANTRO, ALTO, MARUTI 800, GETZ, AVEO, MATIZ. It would surely help you guys to manage comfortable BIG car. Dont directly go for BIG car, unless you wanted to keep DRIVER for your car.

TATA cars are cheaper in cost, but quality too also looks cheap of body material like Door Rubber, Huge GAPS at joins, SIDE PANELS which are sticked gets worn out in time. But as we indians dont got for quality we go for BIG CAR, CHEAPER COST, BETTER MILEAGE, and above all DIESEL.

I wanted to buy MAHINDRA LOGAN but the high end cost me 7.6 lacs on ROAD, I love it while test drive was taken. But I wanted to buy Big car with Diesel, high end and cheaper so got TATA INDIGO FACELIFT - LX (TDI) and Im enjoying it.

    Thanks,
    MKR

By Sanket on Jun 23, 2007

  30. We have booked Indigo xl classic for 7 lacs on road in blore. It is a newer version just lower model than Indigo Grand. Grand is costly, but classic is just what the doc ordered!!!! It does not have builtin entertainment, bluetooth, alloy wheels but has everything else Grand has.

Will post a feedback upon receving it and using it.

By Naveen on Jun 26, 2007

  31. I don’t know what all these guys are ranting about. Maybe they just look at the brand name. If its foreign all the more better for them. Well, they can go for foreign brands and spend more money on them and still sit uncomfortably at the back.
As for me I bought Tata Indigo XL Classic petrol and am travelling in great comfort daily to office. (As an aside, I really enjoy the envious looks I get when I pass by a Fiesta or others of its clan. The difference in interior space is so obvious…)
Also it is giving me a smooth drive and a good mileage - 13 plus in city driving conditions. That was the real surprise/joy as I have read so much nonsense about its engine, performance, noise, vibrations, blah blah blah. It’s good that I took all these TATA bashings with a pinch of salt otherwise I would have missed a good buy and a great car. Get logical guys instead of following the herd (brand name herd ?!!) all the time…

  32. this new baby from tata house is simply awwsome!
    dicor engine is simply rocking…
and what to say about the features.. whoever has given it the tag of lounge has done the best thing.
its a realy good car. donno why these people are critisizing this car. what do they expect… i am sure most of them dont even have the capability to buy maruti 800, and they are comparing indigo with other cars - bloody japs!
this indigo xl dicor is running out of my current budget , so i will wait for few months and then buy it.

all the best for all those who dont want to believe that tata’s - the indians - can manufacture a car that is par excellence and better than many japs cars.

  33. I totally disagree with the author when he says the car is overpriced. If this is costly, what about Verna and FIesta? For those that feel Grand version is costlier, they can go for classic version. As far as the features go, this is the best bet you can get in India. I am not sure about the ride and the fuel effficiency. Owners, please comment

By Venkat on Aug 24, 2007

  34. Dear Friends ,I just got the Classic version a week back and pretty happy about my choice ,very few up-brands can provide such kind of comfort but those come with fancy price tags. Here TATA has provided you a car with similar comforts with in affordable price . Well on mileage Iam not in a position to comment now ,but after the first service I should be able to give you the right info.
The best thing about the car is the leg room and the boot space which is absent in other cars.
