Hyundai Verna - A Quick Introduction

November 6, 2006 – 2:13 pm by CarWale Editorial

From outside, the Hyundai Verna looks like quite a grown-up car, and before we carry on one must highlight one fact - the Hyundai Verna is actually the next generation Accent - but Hyundai did not want to vacate the lower end of the ‘C’ segment and has continued production of the old Accent. Anyway, outside as well as inside, the Verna feels far more sophisticated than the Accent. The question is whether it is more sophisticated than the Honda City and The Ford Fiesta its two primary competitors.

Verna PhotoThe answer is one word? Um, I don’t have one actually. The Verna is big, inside and outside - bigger than the Fiesta and similar in cabin space to the City. The problem is that the car is a sort of amalgam between its two competitors - more exhilarating to drive than the City, but not as much as the 1.6 Fiesta - but we’ll come to driving later. One thing the Verna is good at is rear leg-room - the rear seats are a lot higher than the Accent (sorry to harp on about the Accent - but it is an Accent replacement in the West y’see) as is legroom. Unless you happen to be fairly tall and push the front seat all the way back.

Fitment levels on the top-end petrol models are good, but I hate plastic wood, but thats really not my fault. Anyway, GM cars are still the best in class in interiors (GM cars have other serious problems however) but the Verna isn’t bad. So how is it to drive?

1.6 VTVT

Variable Timing Valve Train, thats the term that Hyundai is using in India despite the Engine having ‘CVVT’ emblazoned on it. Honestly, 100 horsepower is what the car advertises, but it feels rather unexciting. Again straight comparison between this and the Fiesta 1.6 and City VTEC, but it is cheaper than both. The car has a very uninspiring top-end, though mid-range power is fairly good and the car is very well geared for city traffic, though not for wheel-spinning off-the-line drag racing - but changing is comfortable.
On the handling front, this car is a lot tighter than the car it should have replaced, yet, I’ll still swear by the Ford or the pricier VTEC. Ride quality is very good, but a thirty minute drive is hardly an idea.

1.5 CRDi

OK, I’ll be honest - you want a Verna buy this. It doesn’t have electrically operated side mirrors or the fake wood fascia or the nice beige upholstery, but this car moves. It rattles like a truck at start-up sounds loud, but if you let this car go, it would out-gun the petrol. You’ll hit 150-160 in no time and on Hyundai’s test track at Sriperumbudur, you knew this car still had another 20-30k’s left before we ran out of road.
The downside? Try breaking from high speed - the car does tend to wobble a bit and then the ABS catches in on the action. And then I started a fairly high speed U-turn, and the car is not as tight on the corners as the competition, as it tends to understeer unless you cut speed, but the car doesn’t react adversely if you lift off the corner mid-corner.
But, honestly despite the niggles, I loved the CRDi, the Verna is really good. The Fiesta 1.4 DuraTorq is far less powerful but tighter on the corners. It is the best in its class.

  4. I’m looking for a mid-size sedan, and am confused between Verna and Aveo 1.4LS. Aveo 1.6 goes a bit too costly. Aveo looks really good and Verna drives way better than Aveo1.4. Should I wait for the new Baleno?

  15. hey guys..please please help me out on this…should i go for the aveo 1.4 or the verna…important is the fuel economy factor?

By nihardeep on May 25, 2007

  16. Hi nihardeep,
there are many factors which makes a car economical in the long run ( apart from fuel economy)like brand, service cost , availability of spares & cost.

you have mentuioned verna & aveo , both of them more or less similar in fuel economy . However, in long run aveo could be costlier based on other factors.

why dont you try the new SX4 from maruti( but strictly for 4 people to sit i must say).i think it would meet all your requirements. If looks are deterring then i would suggest go for verna.

  17. Hi,
I have some queries about Verna CRDi.
Is there any problem faced due to the turbocharger failing..?
How good is the car at extremely high speeds ( is it fairly balanced and gives a safety feeling.?)
Is it worthwhile to opt for ABS ?
How much mileage practically the car gives in a city like Bangalore?
Will the body shine deteriorates after 4 years?
Is the new CRDi motor tested and reliable upto 2 Lacs kms..?

    regards,
    Vineed

  18. Hi,

Verna CRDI-VGT is best diesel car available today in terms of performance in C segment. The engine is superb and more contemprory than any common rail diesel engine in India. Be it TDCi of Ford, TDI of Skoda, DDiS of Suzuki(I mean Fiat)and General motors. Guys, 110 BHP from 1.5 ltrs. Look at Power to speed and Torque to Speed curve of Verna, its just amazing.
I talk of these curves because car makers advertise only Max power and Torque. But whats more improtant is Power and Toqrue over a range of engine speed which determines the overall performance.
If any one want to buy, high performance, elegance, solid C segment diesel car, then VERNA is the Best.
Mileage is around 15km/ltr in city. Actually, technically mileage is measured under standard testing condition. There is no such thing as city mileage. As in city, traffic jams, stoppages, various from area to area and city to city and moreover, driver’s driving expertise also counts a lot. Hence its eye wash if some one talk about city mileage. Same car driven by two different people, in differnet area of city, different times(peak hrs vs no peak) gives different mileage.

So coming back Verna-CRDI VGT. Its best diesel C segment car availabe today.

  19. I feel car is a packaged deal and not engine, chassis, steering, tyres. If I have to compare Verna with fiesta then fiesta is a better package than Verna CRDi. Verna may produce 110 ps but its steering and cornering ability does not match the engine power. It means you are always carrying extra power but with no eminent use. Sheer waste of power. In the mean time you are losing 2-3 km per ltr of Diesel. Further hyndai’s claim of higher fuel effieciency is not supported by a third party independent source like AUTOCAR and duly endorsed by LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS. I feel there is difference of ethic values between the Ford (USA)and Hyundai(KOREA). FOrd is doing well with after sales service also and is placed 2nd after Maruti in latest JD Power Survey 2006 much above Hyudai. I feel from next year Ford will emerge more strongly from next year when their engine plant becomes operative, and Ford will be offering exciting DURA Technology products.
