Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion: Apt for India?

May 14, 2008 – 11:31 am by Rohan Jawalkar

VW Polo Blue MotionThe times are here for the auto manufacturers to highlight frugality as one of their premier talking points and USPs. There were times when you would keep an eye on the speed gauge as you accelerate, but now there are lights that pop up indicating the mileage you would expect if such exuberance is persisted with. I have been a proponent of perfecting the engines and technology on offer now rather than turning our attention towards hybrids and alternative fuels. Read the rest of this entry »

Are electric cars the future of automobiles?

May 4, 2008 – 10:56 am by General Disarray

Diesel seems to be the here and now of automobiles, but electricity seems to be the immediate future. I have recently had the opportunity to ride two electric scooters, and drive an electric car as well, and the only thing I can think of is the lack of power they have. No, I’m not going to badmouth them – everything we ‘need’ in today’s world depends on electrons filing this way or that in an orderly fashion. In fact, if it wasn’t for electricity, you probably wouldn’t be reading this on your computer, and I would’ve had to bang out the words with no spellcheck on a Remington. Mitsubishi Outlander is coming - Move over CRV!

April 28, 2008 – 1:45 pm by Rohan Jawalkar

Mitsubishi OutlanderExpected in: September 2008

Estimated Price: 18-20 Lakh

The Honda CRV is being challenged. Finally! Everyone has been eyeing the growing SUV market here and there have been competitors but none of them have been able to even create a false alarm or a mild tremor. Enter the Outlander. Why do you think should this entrant be taken seriously? First of all, it’s a Mitsubishi with rallying and Paris – Dakar pedigree. That should take care of the off roading doubts. But seriously, looking at the price range and what the SUV history in India has taught us is that there is not much off road activity happening as such. It’s more of a lifestyle statement and a good vehicle to own for out of town trips or even within the city because of its macho stance. Read the rest of this entry »

GM Maintenance Promise : It Works!

April 24, 2008 – 8:51 pm by Banwari Lal Sharma

General Motors came to India with its Opel brand in 1996. Being a contemporary luxury car, Opel Astra became an instant hit. But the party got over as soon as people started realizing the maintenance cost of the German Astra. GM introduced Corsa which proved to have the same problem. Opel Vectra, not to mention, never sold in encouraging numbers. Despite of being fantastic products, all the Opel cars were discontinued one after the other. Blame high maintenance cost for their disappearance. Read the rest of this entry »
