Inspired by other reviews and a few criticisms thereon, I elaborate my previous review ‘A lovely car’ dated 17/09/2007, herein below:

I bought Indica V2 Turbo DLS BS III in June 2006 – my 1st car.  I bought this car at the age of 44, after having driven almost all small segment cars and choosing therefrom.  I have since driven this Indica 20000 kms in 15 months. Of the 20000 kms, I have driven 12000 kms on highway and the rest in city. I have always re-fueled the tank full and have measured the mileage each time.  The mileage I constantly get in city is 17/18 kmspl and on highways 21/22 kmspl (@ speed of 80/85 kmsph). It’s a very economical car - per KM cost in city works out between Rs.2 to Rs.2.10 and on highway between Rs.1.65 to Rs.1.70 (image the running cost per person with a family of 4).

The car is very spacious, comfortable & smooth running vehicle - I have driven a maximum of 650 kms in one single day (from Akola to Vadodara).  The road grip is fantastic and the AC is very effective.  Its pick-up is no more sluggish even with AC on, as it is in the case of non-Turbo.  The initial pick-up cannot be compared with that of a petrol car of its segment but later on it is as good.  Overall, you virtually don’t feel you are driving a diesel car.  It’s comfortable for city drive as well though not as easy as it is with WagonRs, Santros & the like.  Nevertheless, it is only a matter of getting used to it - especially as you don’t get to see an inch of bonnet (howsoever tall you may be).

It’s a very sturdy & safe car with a strong body.  The interiors are sufficiently good / more than good for the cost of the car (one can, however, go for higher versions DLG/DLX for better interiors & more facilities).  30-35% of the cars on the road are Indica (irrespective of model/version).  Therefore, there has to be something special about it.  And yes, Indica is not a Taxiwala’s car – it is only a myth.  One can see plenty of private Indicas on road.  As such, other/bigger cars too are used as taxis – aren’t they?

My earlier review 'A lovely car' was posted on 17/09/2007 and not on 13/12/2007, as inadvertently mentioned/referred to in this elaborated/detailed review (A lovely lovely Car).

Oh! sorry. It's Akola to Vadodara (next morning we drew to Bhavnagar - another 200 kms).

    Dear Indica turbo user

I am planning for this car. Kindlt guide me about the diesel noise part. and what about maintenence.

    hemanthal@rediffmail.com

  7. on 08 Oct, 2007 at 01:04 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Diesel noise is slightly more than that of petrol but it hardly matters, as you don't get to hear it distinctly - even others seldom notice the difference. Regarding maintainence, Indica is known to be a maintainence-free & economical car - had it been otherwise, it would not have been so popular. And this Turbo model is even better - its virtually as good as a petrol car (even the pick-up). So go ahead & buy a Turbo model - you will not regret - Pankaj Prasad (adwishek@gmail.com)

fix a rear spoiler and roofrails and the car's looks change from ''indica'' to a sporty looking car!

Thanks VIjay for the suggestion. Until now I haven't tried anything to change its looks. But I will try it sometime.

    Dear Indica Turbo user
I am planning to buy my first car. My usage may be on an average of 60km per day regularly apart from out station trips.
Please guide me about tataindica turbo

  11. on 19 Dec, 2007 at 10:44 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Shiva, as is evident from my review, I am very happy with the car. Until now, in 18 months, I have driven 23000 kms & have not spent a single rupee on maintenance or repairs/replacement of parts (except for routine oil change etc.). Amongst the Turbo models, I would recommend you to go for Turbo DLS BS III & not the higher versions DLG & DLX, as engines of these two have sligthly more noice & mileage is too is slightly less (due to more power). DLS is the most successful turbo version - go 4 it

  12. on 24 Dec, 2007 at 11:48 AM Amresh.Mehta

I am thinking to buy a Turbo version. With the most recent models out, any tips you users?

  13. on 24 Dec, 2007 at 12:06 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

There are basically 3 Turbo models; DLS, DLG & DLX (in the range of Rs.3.90 to 4.40 lac). The latest is DLX with ABS & Airbags (Rs.4.85 lac).

    Hi

I have been an owner of Tata Cars for few years. I had bought this New V2 Turbo in Jun'07 with much expectation. Though the car has proved to be good, but my experience with the dealer has been a nightmare. Tata's as it seems do not care much about what the customers are recieving from their dealers as even my mails to the Tata Customer support has not been of use.

I have promised never to buy a Tata car again in my life. GOOD LUCK to all Planning to Buy TATA Cars, God Save YOU!

  15. on 27 Dec, 2007 at 03:28 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Gautam, I agree that services of Tata are not so good. However, I have not faced any problem until now. In any case, it doesn't make the car bad - like you yourself have said that it has proved to be good. Anyway! Cheers.

tata indica is the ugliest car in india.. i hate even if the car is pass near me.. the noise, the ugly look, the uglu tail lamps.. everything in the car is very cheap imagination and a very cheap design.. only indians can design such ugly looking car.. whenever i go on long trips i always many indicas broken down.. they are worse than ambassadors.. u can always notice a lot of smoke emitting from behind .. and almost every tat indica owner wl tell u how many times he had problems in front whee

  17. on 03 Jan, 2008 at 10:35 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Well, Madhukar, I would only say that, that's your personal view & perception of Indica - some others may feel so too. I car you like may not be liked by many others. Cheers.

  19. on 10 Jan, 2008 at 07:31 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Hello Vikram, there's nothing wrong in waiting but I would bring to your notice that... as far as I understand, Tata has mastered TDi technology for years but are relatively new to DiCOR as of now. That's the reason that, though DiCOR is an advanced/better technology, Indigo TDi's performance is said to be better than Indigo DiCOR's. May be with time Tata masters DiCOR technology as well & its DiCOR cars perform better than TDi cars (as it should normally do). Cheers.

  20. on 31 Jan, 2008 at 11:59 AM Santosh

Hi Pankaj, I am confused between Indica Turbo DLG/Indica DiCOR/Indigo CS(top end model). I am more keen to buy Indica DiCOR as it's a new engine with newer technology. But your last post suggests that so far TATA has not produced good CRDi engine. If possible can you please Test Drive the other two vehicle (Indica DiCOR and Indigo CS) and come up with your view on it. I am sorry for this weird request but I see you as an Auto Expert and want to know your view in my decision. Thanks, Santosh

  21. on 31 Jan, 2008 at 08:02 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Santosh, I'm not at all an auto-expert. Tata DiCOR engines are good, more powerful & more fuel efficient. DiCOR engines are more noisy. Anyway, if I can test-drive the cars, I will definitely do - I would love to & let you know.

  22. on 05 Feb, 2008 at 10:17 PM Kiran

Hi dude.. I'm planning to buy a indica, plz suggest me between the indica DiCOR and DLS version..i'm bit confused , which is the best among these by features , style , performance and maintainence?

  23. on 06 Feb, 2008 at 09:20 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

DiCOR is more powerful & 15% more fuel efficient than Turbo DLS. DiCOR engine is, however, noisy - especially when ideal (less when in motion). DiCOR has better features & style than Turbo DLS. Performance & maintenance wise both are good cars. I suggest, test-drive both the cars & buy the one that suits your budget & preferences.

    Hi All,

I have been a owner of Indica V2 purchased in the Year 2003 August. Till now it has been a wonderfull car even after hitting a Amby from behind at a speed of 60 KmPh..the engine went 2 inches back but still I rode it without any trouble right after the accident..coverd around 150 Km without any issue..then again the car took a hit from a Tata Truck :D but still no issues rode it for another 1500 KM non stop without issues...Now this is reliablity..its still running just like a new ca

  25. on 09 Feb, 2008 at 10:07 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Yes, Tata cars are very sturdy, strong & realiable. I have used my Turbo for 24K in last 19 months & have not spent a single rupee on any repairs/spares etc. until now. Hope it goes on & on :-) Cheers.

    Hi
I am from South Africa. I bought a Tata Indica TDi DLX end of May last year and have not had any problems with it. Great car.I always start the car and wait for the car to warm up (engine noise change) before I drive it. It is very powerful from take off when the Turbo kicks in at 2500 RPM. I just think that if you use the turbo a lot in city traffic then it gets heavy on Diesel. Is my observation right or is it just my imagination?

    Hi
Hi friend ! thanks very much for your valuable reviews on tata indica turbo. It really helped me to get my Indica and am proud that I brought Indica turbo DLG 20 days back !!!! Excited and really enjoying every bit of it..
here are some of my concerns - gear shifting / clutch is little hard and I can feel the engine vibration on accelerator / gear lever .. engine noise also little more than expected... is it normal ? is it going to improve once it is serviced and runs for 2000 KM +?tks gu

  31. on 14 Jul, 2008 at 10:04 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Gear shifting, clutch and even accelerator are generally harder than they are in Petrol cars, and so is the vibration level felt thereon. It's only a matter of getting used to it - you would not feel so after a couple of months. Noise level in Diesel engines is always more. Noise level particularly in DLG/DLX version/s is a little/negligibly more than in DLS version. But you get more power & torque, and better ride quality (14 inches wheel). So, all's normal. Happy & safe motoring. Cheers.

  32. on 23 Jul, 2008 at 01:07 PM Ajith.Rs

thanks Pankaj, Even after the 1st service at 1200 kms, im bit worried on the pickup of my car at gear 1 & 2. even overall under normal drive am not able to reach 2000 rpm, i have to push up to 80km/h to attain this rpm at gear 5 . I wonder if you have a chart speed vs rpm !!

  33. on 25 Jul, 2008 at 10:14 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Well, that's unusal. I think there's something wrong in the rpm setting etc. Get it checked thoroughly.

  34. on 14 Aug, 2008 at 12:30 PM Kiran

I used Indic for 20 months. I used to commute daily from thane to parel about 30 kms . avg was excellent 16 kmpl but it started making noise. This is common feature and noise becomes unbearable after 15000 kms. Also its oil levels need to be checked regulary and it needs oil fill up once a month. Dealer service bad allover. I sold off in 20 mths.

  35. on 17 Aug, 2008 at 08:57 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

That too is unusal. I have been using my Indica for more than 2 years & have driven almost 30K, and have not faced any problem yet. Besides, I know many who have been using the car for many more years & have no compliants as such.

    hi...

bought a indica diesel - DLX model year 2003...can any body tell me what will be the milage , maintainence cost and whether its a good buy or not.....

  37. on 18 Aug, 2008 at 12:31 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Well, how much kms it has done until now & for what amount did you buy for?

Mileage it should give you around 17 in city & 20 on highway.

  38. on 20 Aug, 2008 at 02:25 PM Pritamsakar26

bought the car for 1.75 lacs as per the KM reading meter is showing 38000 .....with A.C the power of the car really reduces and it has aproblem of climbing steep hills with A.C ,,,can any body suggest a solution to this

  39. on 20 Aug, 2008 at 05:25 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

The price paid is reasonable enough for 2003 model that has done only 38K. Indica Non-Turbo has that pick-up/accelaration problem with AC ON while climbing steep hills.

  40. on 27 Aug, 2008 at 01:47 PM Amol Mudholkar (Pune)

    Hi Prasad,

Gone thro' ur reviews & looks like indica is a good option. How would you compare Indica xeta with Disel version? Bit confused on these 2 vehicles. I have the impression of disel vehicle being moer noiser than pertol.

  41. on 27 Aug, 2008 at 07:16 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Yes, diesel engine (of any car) is noiser than petrol engine - but that's a basic feature (nothing to worry at all). As regards choosing between Xeta & Indica, you should prefer diesel (indica) only if your run/usage is at least more than 750 kms per month & you are going to keep the car for 4/5 years - then only you will benefit therefrom. Else, go for petrol, but Xeta is not known to be a problem free car - you have better options, say WagonR, Santro, i10 etc. depeding upon your budget.

  42. on 11 Sep, 2008 at 03:38 PM Nabarun

Trying to decide between the Indica Turbo DLG and Dicor DLG. Are there any known issues with the Indica Dicor? I was reading something like fluid leakage. Can anybody elaborate? The price difference at my city is INR 27000 ex-showroom.
Tata Motors seems to have discontinued both the versions as the Vista will be out this week. But I seem to hate the meter consoles at the center.

  43. on 11 Sep, 2008 at 07:34 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

DiCOR has more power than TDi. It's also more fuel efficient. It is, however, a little noisier that TDi. Now, it will be prudent to go for Vista - a much better engine with even more space, better ride-quality/suspensions, interiors & features. Meter console in the center is not bad at all. I suggest you can choose between Vista QJD & Vista TDi - buy the one that suits your budget well.

  44. on 12 Sep, 2008 at 08:16 AM Nabarun

The QJ seems to be a little beyond my budget and going by the Tata Motors website, the TDi is completely new. Wouldn't it be wiser to let the car run for a few months before jumping for it? But the problem is that i cant wait... want to buy this month itself. Any known issues with the Dicor?

  45. on 12 Sep, 2008 at 08:50 AM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

The Turbo has been more successful than DiCOR. Vista TDi has the same engine that Turbo has. Besides, it has all the interiors & features of Vista QJD. So in that case, I would suggest you to consider Vista TDi

    Hi all,
This is an excellent review I ever read. I am going to take a sedond hand Indica V2 DLS BS III - 2006 model. First time I am going to use diesel vehicle. When I read the reviews posted by you all it helped me to understand better about Indica a lot. Even one of my friend, who is doing mechanic job around last 25 years recommended this car. I am so Happy.
Thank you all and please advise me if anything need to do.
    Thanks,
    Sreejesh.

  48. on 03 Nov, 2008 at 01:56 PM Pankaj Prasad (Bhavnagar)

Sreejesh, I suggest if you can buy DLG version. It is even better, as it has intercooler, a little more power (6ps) & torque (6nm), bigger wheels (14") & few accessories (Power Windows etc.). It is, therefore, more in demand - you may have to pay a little more.
