Initial Impression - 100 kms driven

Exterior:

The colour of my car is Cashmere and it looks pretty handsome in this
shade. Have seen quite a few Aveos in the colour lately. The build
quality is

good and the doors being resaonably heavy close with a resounding thud. Overall the car looks and feel quite solid.

Interiors:

I must say that the interior of the car is indeed one of the best in
the class, if not the best. The quality of the plastics used is very
good when compared to the other cars in its segment (Ikon, Logan, SX4)
that I considered before buying. The dual tone interiors (black and
beige) give the car a classy look. The new speedometer/tachometer
cluster looks fantastic at night with a combination of green backlight
and glowing red dials.

Space is generous with enough room to stretch your legs in the front as
well as at the back. I would say, its similar to the Honda City, maybe
an inch less.

Performance (Engine, Gearbox, Brakes, AC, Suspension):

Engine
- The engine feels very silet when turned on and unlike the 1.6 logan
that i tested sometime back, there is no vibration felt through the
gear stick. The engine feels very smooth as the car gains momentum and
the smoothness is retained as you move to higher gears. It definitely
feels smoother than the Zen and Baleno.
Since the car is new, I
have not pushed it beyond 2500 rpm in any gear and have only reached to
80-85 kms/hr on the DND Flyway.

The torque is very good and the car has no problem going at 35-40 kms
in the 4th gear. The engine pulls well and is quite eager to respond
the accelerator.

But the car does feel a litle sluggish below 1800 rpm in the 2nd gear
with the AC on, however, once the needle moves above 2000 rpm, the
engine feels eager to move ahead. I have read that this is a VGIS
characteristic but I am a tad disappointed with this behaviour. Will
report this when I take it for the 1st checkup after 1000 kms.

Gearbox
- The new gearbox is much better that the previous one. The shift
quality is much improved with the movements being direct. The earlier
shifts were vague and notchy. So, I feel GM has done a reasonably good
job with the gear box which was much needed.

Brakes-
I feel that there is slight vibrations when I try to decelerate from a
reletively high speed. I am not sure if its a problem with all aveos or
its just the case with my car. Otherwise brakes are quite effective. I
guess the 185/60 Bridgestone Turanza also support the brakes pretty
well.

Air conditioning - is up to the mark and
one can feel the chill very soon. I would say that the effectiveness of
the AC can be compared to my baleno which is saying quite a lot.

Suspension
- The suspension does a very good job of soaking the uneven roads and
potholes of the city. The gas filled shockers are more silent than my
friends Fiesta. Overall, they perform up to my expectations.

Fuel Efficiency:

Haven’t calculated the mileage yet. Got it filled (auto cut) yesterday, so will report about her drinking habits soon.

Overall:

I am very happy with the car. Will post more updates and I dive it more.

I also have this sluggishness with the ac on at low RPM, this i asked the service engineer also about this, he says this drop in power will not be much if the car has run for a while before putting on the ac. For my case my office from home is just 5 kms, so that engine does not warm up much. Is it the same case with you.

i am getting a mileage of 10+ in city driving conditions, update your calculations

Hi Saroj, from what I know, the sluggishness at low rpm (bellow 1800 pm) is a VGIS engine characteristic. But I feel the sluggishness more evident in the 2nd gear than the 3rd gear. Will study this a little more and will update. Will also post the mileage shortly.

    Thanks Arup,
I will try out this 2nd and 3rd gear stuff. But yesterday i was driving with 5 people and luggage, with ac on the car was sluggish in the 3rd gear. I was driving in the city only.

Hi Arup & Aveo'ites: I'm looking for Aveo 1.4LS but in comparision between Aveo & Fiesta (Petrol 1.4),does Aveo stand a better chance... I'm not sure how much the new relaunched AVEO is an improved lot wrt the Performance,Gear shifs,Steering & Driving experience probs. it was critisised for earlier - as I keep hearing that the Aveo is not a Driving enthusiastics vehicle from old reports.

Is your Aveo the relaunched model. Do suggest b/w Aveo & Fiesta (petrol) urgently.-Regs: preetham@hcl.in

    hi Aveo'ites

i am going to buy aveo base model . Can someone help to figure out differences(other than gear shift) between old aveo and the newly revised aveo , so that i can confirm that dealer is not giving me the old one.

  9. on 03 Sep, 2007 at 01:22 PM Arup Roy

Hi, following are the improvements in the new Aveo

    >Much improved gear shift
    >Improved throttle response
    >New speedometer/tachometer cluster
    >Chrome trims on the Ac vents
    >Rear arm rest
    >Improved AC

You can easily distinguish the new model by taking a look at the speedometer/tachometer cluster. The new one has a telescoping shape with chrome lining.

To be doubly sure, ask the dealer to give you a model of June 2007 onwards.

Fiesta 1.4 P engined car has better drive dynamics in comparison to Aveo. Aveo is also painful if arthe of normal height say 5'8" or above and like to be in front seats. The knee interfer with dashboard. Actually Aveo's biggest strength ( Dashboard) is its weakest point and as not liked by me due to this reason. Rear seat Headroom is also very low due to theatre type rear seats of Aveo. Fiesta is more fun 2 drive then Aveo.

All i can observe from the comments posted by fiesta owners n aveo owners is that overall aveoa scores more than fiesta on the basis of comments mentioned on this carwala platform, well i m also confused as in which one to buy? my major concern is the running cost, after sales service n i dont prefer changing cars frequently.so people can u please suggest me which car will prove to b a bit easy on my pocket n will be a part of my life for more no. of years. mail me nikhil_bathla2020@yahoo.co.in

I am currently in California and I am looking forward to buy a new car to my dad in India... We had bought Fiesta 1.4 P last year but it got stolen...We were very much satisfied by its performance...Now I am thining fo buying him another car and so I am confused whether to buy a basic aveo or SX4...As from the well analysed description of Arup I think he can better guide me with that.... My dad is a speed freak and he likes to floor the gas padel a lot...do you think Aveo can match Fiesta

  17. on 15 Mar, 2008 at 10:32 AM Arup Roy

    Hi Himal,

Aveo is not exactly an out and out performance vehicle. It is meant to be driven in a more relaxed manner. The power delivery is very good though and evenly spread across the power band. It doesn't need much downshifting of gears and you can easily cruise along. But if you want a performance car, you should ideally go for Fiesta 1.6, not the 1.4 and not the SX4.

The dashboard problem mentioned by Sanju is there only while you get into the car. You may hit your knee against the dash if you are not careful. But once you are settled in the seat, there is no problem. I am 5’10” and I have not faced any problem of knee hitting the dash once I am inside the car. Yes, the back seats are a bit high)and tall guys may have their heads touching the roof when the car is being tossed around. The car is a fine piece of machine and is ideally suited for the family gu

    hi folks
mr Arup /mr gopal /any one out I am considering buying a aveo 1.4 base model , as i have driven larely smaller cars like the fiat uno , i am unclear about the following in aveo
1)-reverse gear is a placed differently in aveo -is it a problem .
2)-is reversing a problem as the dicky is palced higher than the fiesta how does one be sure that it is safe and no one is standing under the dicky height 3.5 ft .
