I have decided to buy Spark 1.0 LT. I will be taking the delivery day after. The process of selecting a car in this segment was quite difficult. I considered WagonR, Zen Estilo, Santro Xing, Spark and Swift. Wagon R is a nice car technically, good mileage but the exterior is something that put me off. It looks like a box. It is actually true to its name WAGON. Yes it looks like a mini wagon. So I ruled this option out. Zen estilo is another car with good performance but this estilo is bad from an aesthetic point of view. I find the exterior of this car less pleasing. The previous model of zen was better. Not sure why Suzuki changed the exterior. So I ruled this car out as well. Swift has looks of a vintage car and definitely caught my attention. Has good space inside (3 can sit at the back comfortably), price is slightly higher as compared to other hatchbacks. But. the higher price is justified by the extra space and comfort that you get. The only thing put me off here is the mileage which is around 12kmpl. I was looking for 15 at least in city. Then came Santro Xing and I liked this car very much. The initial Santro had a very awkward back. I used to hate that look of Santro. However, hyundai has improved it considerably. The price is good. Performance is good too. I liked it as much as Spark. However, I decided that Spark is a better car. Spark matches Santro in performance, a little bit here and there is acceptable. Spark has good mileage (@15kmpl in city with AC). It has a very cute look from outside. The interior is also good. 40:60 split is also good idea and I am sure will be useful. People have cribbed about the speedometer in the middle but I think that is just a matter of getting used to it. Similar feedback for the placement of wiper and headlights. Spark uses tubeless tyres which makes it possible for the car to travel about 60 kms even after a puncture. Well this can be picked up by all the cars but i think its a good feature. Also spark comes with 3 year warranty which is unique in this segment. Even at low speeds and in 4th gear the vehicle doesn't knock.

The only hitch I had before purchasing Spark is its service network. I am located in the western part of India and their network in this region is good as their plant is also located in thsi region Plus they are increasing their service stations to 200 by this year end. This definitely witll give me more comfort. But as of now I have bought this car and I think I would suggest that this car is "Worth a Buy".

I hope you were able to test drive the car and have observed visibility angle for yourself.I went to dealership thrice but was told that test drive vehicle wasot available.Autocar of June says city milage is 12.3 kmpl.I am mentioning this only bacause you are particular about milage and I too have been researching on Spark

Hi Novice & Gurkanwal, I found yr reviews very helpful.
Pls help make my dec easier:
    1) 'WhatCar' & 'AutoCar' said SPARK's city mileage is around 12.
Novice, can u confirm your fig of 15 ?
If ti's so my vote for SPARK gets easy.
    2)What's SANTRO's mileage ?
    3)Gurkanwal, how's ALTO clutch ?
    Easy or hard ?
My wife got a knee problem after 5 yrs of MAruti-800. Some ppl said Maruti's clutch is generally hard. Can you pls comment ?

    Thanks,
    Prasad.

Alto clutch, brakes, accelerator and steering(I bought LXI) are extremely easy to operate, the suspension is better than Santro. The only shortcoming is that its pick up drops with AC on.But this citeria does not matter with the Indian city traffic conditions

  4. on 03 Jul, 2007 at 01:22 PM Prasad

    Thank you Gurkanwal.
Can you tell me the mileage you're getting ?

    Novice,
Can you pls confirm your mileage of 15 in-city for SPARK ??

    Thank you again,

    Prasad.

I havent checked yet, but I find Autocar figures to be fairly reliable

    Hi Gurukanwal/Prasad,
Can you help me out to decide about my new car? I have been looking around and the figure of 15 kms/ltr is really impressive. In fact, the newspaper advertisements of sparks are showing 16.5!! Has any of you got any update on the exact figure for city mileage?
    Thanks,
    Shailendra

  7. on 18 Jul, 2007 at 02:00 PM Gurkanwal Singh

As I have mentioned above,as per AUTOCAR mgazine, JUNE edition,, city milage of SPARK is 12.3 kmpl only.I find Autocar figures to be reliable.Manufacturers will claim astronomical figures which must be discounted.I am not a Autocar dealer but I would strongly recommend you to buy this magazine ,,,study for yourself, and then decide which car you will go for, best of luck

    Hi Novice,
Can u share ur experience about your own spark. Guess u have driven a lot..as its almost 2 months since delivery. Kindly confirm abt mileage.

  9. on 01 Sep, 2007 at 10:09 AM Novice

Hi All, I hadn't visited this post for long so couldn't reply to the messages. As far as mileage is concerned I am finding it difficult to gauge it because the normal practice is to fill the tank and then see how many kms it does for those litres of petrol. I mainly drive in city and it doesn't make sense for me to fill the tank. Hence, I haven't been able to get an accurate feel of it. But so far I have found it to be around 13. I was told, it will improve by the time I am ready for 1st servic

  10. on 01 Sep, 2007 at 10:29 AM Novice

Yes I have done more than 1000 kms now and can talk about it a little more after having the first hand experience. Drives very smoothly. On smooth roads you would hear no noise. At high speeds its very stable. Even at 120kmph you don't feel it. Turning and parking are comfortable. Clutch, power steering and power brakes are easy to use. Sometimes the reverse gear gives me bit of a problem but otherwise the gears engage smoothly. A.C. is quite effective. Cools the interior within 3-4 mins.

Its very happy to see a positive comment about spark by novice, i have seen so many negative comments featuring about spark, i felt disinterested. But, has GM come out with a vehicle carrying more critics than people interested in spark, or all this hype is a perception of a good car.

  12. on 07 Oct, 2007 at 09:35 AM Novice

Hey Sitaraman, it definitely is a good car almost in all respect - style, performance. As far as price is concerned it is slightly higher - 10k to 20k. I think people are expecting the world of features from GM for those extra 20k. This is not fair. Also most people are comparing spark with matiz which is not fair. it should be comapred with santro, zen etc which are the competition for it. I feel proud to own Spark.

am buying a spark! - given the current conditions and choice available as of today in the market!
mk use of the centennial GM offer - almost 45K savings on LT!..and similar on other variants.

    Hi Novice ,
The current scheme of 45k discount looks very attractive. you must have driven the car for almost 1500 km by now , wanted to know your latest review on the chevy spark

  15. on 20 Oct, 2007 at 04:18 PM Sandeep

    hi Gurkanwal Singh ,
I am planning to buy a car in the segment of around 3-4 lacs and i am looking for santro ,spark and Swift.I have heard lot of negative comments on spark about it's mileage and space. As i am staying in utaranchel but cheverolet is not having any service atation near by except dehradun. So what are the sevice requirement,Do you have go for service station for engine or suspension and related problem.I want to know whether it care or you can drive it and tuff without much care

  16. on 29 Oct, 2007 at 01:13 PM Harish

I booked my Chevy Spark last week, waiting for its delivery and am v v v excited. Its a cuuty car with great space utilization except the boot space. Its got such an amazingly silent engine and an unbelievably smooth gas shock absorbers. Its has a good fuel efficiency too just like an Alto or a Santro with powerful AC, giving out around 63PS power with a 1L engine which makes highway driving a pleasure at 120km/hr at 5th gear.
Warning: Please don't sleep off while driving your Spark on highway

  17. on 03 Nov, 2007 at 05:18 PM Novice

    Hey Amey,

Yes I just crossed 2000 kms and I must say I am having fun with my car. It's been trouble free till date. Mileage is around 13 in city and @ 17 on highway. It cruises on the highway. Very easy to maneuvre, no noise, very smooth and stylish. I will recommend Spark to anybody and everybody who is looking at GM as a new entrant in small car segment. Don't be apprehensive. Go for it!!

Spark is better then i19, i10 is nothing but new santro... costly, u will get better features in Spark in same amount u can spend for i10.

I am satisfied wid the performance of my Spark. Mileage i am getting widout a.c. is 17.4 kmpl.

  20. on 28 Jan, 2008 at 04:16 PM Baiku

Hi all, I bought spark two months before.I didnt notice the correct mileage , since my office very near(3 km) to house. so not travelling more, also travelling to city in weekends. Now its 1300 km,But performance wise very good and I am waiting to get a good mileage, I think it may get after running some kilometers. Its is a very cute and comfortable car for a small family

  21. on 28 Jan, 2008 at 04:29 PM Baiku

Also the thing is my spark is Mint Green, and some small scratches came on bumbers and door side, and I called service center they told now its difficult to get that colour and they are painting by giving outside. So please share your experience in such cases if any.and what will be the avilability of paints etc.?
Even then I am very much satisfied with performance except these type small issues. Also please share about the mileage you are getting now.

    Dear All,
I am also a Spark owner for the past 2 months. It has run 700 kms so for. I calculated mileage from fuel warning lamp indicator ON to fuel warning lamp indicator ON. It is exactly 11 kmpl. It is not 16 kms/lr or 19 kms/ lr. But surprisingly yesterday I got a call from my dealer asking for any problems in the car. And they have called my car for some check up for this mileage problem. Also there seems to be some problem in the digital clock inside the car.

I dont know from where you are refering the mileage 15kmpl with ac. I have a Spark LS model, I am getting around 11-12 without ac, although company claiming 16.9, I dont how they will get it. with ac its further dropped to 9-10. I felt mileage wise it on lower side. all other performance is good.

  32. on 12 Nov, 2008 at 04:06 PM Kousani Roy

I bought a Spark LS and currently waiting for delivery. My first option when I wanted to buy a car was Alto. But when I drove an Alto of my cousin, two things which I disliked most is interior and leg space. Alto is very cramped and only a 20km journey (up and down, total 40km), and I was very tired.
Interior also looks very cheap in Alto.

If you are comparing Alto and Spark because of price, I feel you should go for Spark even if it's 40-50k dearer. Because it's much better value for money.

  33. on 12 Nov, 2008 at 04:07 PM Kousani Roy

Between Santro and Spark; I have drove a Santro. Santro is an wonderful car! It's so easy to drive, and so smooth! But though Santro is slightly bigger in measurements, interior space I feel is same in Santro and Spark. Spark LS and Santro GL is same as far as price is concerned.
1.But Spark LS has much more features, like Front Power Windows, Internally adjustable OSRVM, and Body Colored Bumpers.
    2. My personal opinion, Spark looks better!
    3. Santro gives slightly less mileage (though I hav

    hi,
    i liked this comment...
"spark!!!it sucks........gm cheating with old technology with just 8-valve(sohc) engine.even m800 has 16-valve latest technology." accorging to me GM/Chevy selling scrap from europe (like logan) electrical, exhustpipe etc. r positioned for left-hand driven cars look it carefully baned at eu selling in india.
but i favour new 16v,dohc,new engine advanced-best for city & highway. reasons: more mileage & ps+a.c+v.lowcost 2maintain+high torque...you canask any expert
