SX4 is good for small nuclear families where the backseat wont be used. It is ineffective if you have to seat 3 persons at the rear and that is its biggest drawback. Mileage is another area of concern since it is just 10kmpl in city. Highway might be around 12kmpl but I havnt tested. overall in the 7.35L plus bracket I wouldnt call it a value for money. ABS and Airbags may show a bargain but really it is an expensive automobile. Indigo XL is far more sophisticated with interiors and driveability and comfort of all passengers (front and rear). If you are looking for a luxuary Sedan I think XL should be the better choice which is about 1.5L cheaper than SX4. Swift is even a better alternative to SX4 as it is easy manouvre in busy city traffic and gives a much better mileage.

Hi sanjeet, without testing how could you say it will give mileage 10 in city and 12 in highway? I am a proud owner of sx4 and i am getting 13 in city and 15.5 in highway.

    Mr Abdul Basheer
Good mileage fig. I am gettting delivery of my ZXi this week end. Can you give ur mail id or contact no. I am Krishnamurthy from Kalpakkam

latest Autocar magazine carries detailed test result for SX4, the city milage given by them is more than 9 but less than 10

  4. on 30 May, 2007 at 11:46 PM Samiran

I wouldn't look at the SX4 for value for money !!! In C category the best cars for that should be the Indigo or the Logan....The SX4 is the most comfortable car in it's class for high speed highway driving .......A great one for weekend getaways....

  5. on 31 May, 2007 at 12:15 PM Amit Sharma (Noida)

I do no think you can compare SX4 with a Indigo for features or price- you really must be joking. It is class+ service promise + suzuki (japanese)+ engine and then maybe come the features.
Swift is a good car but again a diffrent category

  6. on 31 May, 2007 at 03:36 PM Sanjeet Taneja (New Delhi)

Indigo XL is being compared here & not Indigo standard. XL has far more features & much spacious interiors but SX4 lacks most of that. Features like chiller in glove box, rear ac vents with seperate controls, electric ORVM with side repeater lamps, antisubmarine seats with 6 way adjust, engine immobilizer, driver & passenger seat belt warning, coolant temp & low fuel indicators, auto cut-off of start motor on start many more. SX4 may fresh feel now but not many will find it admirable for long.

I'm planning to buy sx4 or Honda city zx. My monthly usage is @ 1500 KM . I'm not dying to speed or race. What family car anyone of you suggest at @ 7.5L budget !!!

  8. on 01 Jun, 2007 at 09:13 AM Amit Kakroo (Chandigarh)

Honda City ZX still is the best Family car. Maruti has done a good job in SX4 but the material used is not good quality. the plastics, the Nippon audio system, the seat fabric, all are very basic quality.
If u ned a refined family car. Go for the City.

    >>> Honda City VTEC is undergoing a Minor Model change in August and will now spor ABS & Airbags.
    >>> City ZX will have a full model change in Q4 2008.

I am planning to buy a mid sizer. I have short listed Maruthi SX4 and Hyundai Verna. I am looking for safety and comfortable ride. Can someone help me to deciede which one is a better car. I do about 10,000 KM per year.
    Thanks, Muthukumar.

  10. on 05 Jun, 2007 at 09:57 PM Dr. Gyan Bharti

Dear Muthukumar if you can increase your budget a little go for verna diesel. If you think of Verna think of diesel only, petrol verna is not quite there. Dont but SX4 now, its too new and the debate for it being is, as u can see, still on. Want to buy a petrol vehicle in this category go for Fiesta.

  11. on 06 Jun, 2007 at 03:23 PM Sanjeet Taneja (New Delhi)

Hi Muthu, I wouldnt recommend diesel if your running is around 10K per year. Look for Petrol & either Verna or fiesta looks ok. Indigo XL Petrol is available for a lesser price than Fiesta with loads of features & you might want to consider that too.

  12. on 07 Jun, 2007 at 06:41 PM Madhusudan

I took the advice and test drove the Indigo XL sedan. My god! What an unrefined car the Indigo is. Noise, poor finish, smaller boot, uncomfortable front seats, negligible features, worse than terrible gear ..... The Indigo XL, on account of its mileage and rear seat space, may prove profitable as a taxi. But for self driving, there is no comparison with the SX4. Everybody is entitled to give their opinion. But I would implore Sanjeet to test drive back to back and give an unbiased opinion

    LALIT
I AM PLANNING TO BUY A CAR COST AROUND 7.5L. I PLANNED FOR SX4 BUT NOW REVIEWS AREMAKING ME TO RETHINK. MY USAGE IS GENERALLY SINGLE DRIVE AND ARUND 2500 KMS/MONTH. CAN ANYBODY COMPARE MILEAGE, PICKUP AND OTHER IMPORTANT PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS OF SX4, CITY, FIESTA, VERNA. I CAME TO KNOW SPARES OF FIESTA ARE QUITE COSTLY. I FEEL VERNA DIESEL STILL NEW. I LIKE SX4 FOR IT'S SPORTY STYLE. I HAVE INDICA DIESEL AND IT HAS BIG PICK UP PROBLEM SO I DON'T WANT TO GO FOR INDIGO.

  14. on 09 Jun, 2007 at 02:22 AM Gbukman

This review is comparing cars from different segments which does not make much sense to me.

  15. on 18 Jun, 2007 at 02:22 PM Bala

I have test driven most of the cars in that segment-fiesta,verna,sx4,logan.I have to say, the indigo XL is really excellent both in terms of power and it's feature set.The petrol engine in XL is a 16 v twin cam engine (logan has a 8 valve btw) and churns out 101bhp of power.I test drove on a small hillock nearby with 5 ppl on board and the rear and front AC were switched on to the max.The car effortlessly climbed up in 3rd gear. The SX4 interiors definitely look cramped. It cant fit 3 @ rear seat

  16. on 21 Jun, 2007 at 01:59 PM Thomas

Sanjeet, i would prefer to go for a car manufactured by a car maker instead that manufactured by a Truck maker(TATA). I already own an SX4 and i dont think you know anything about cars to give such a review.

  17. on 21 Jun, 2007 at 03:12 PM Sanjeet Taneja (New Delhi)

Thomas, if you have purchased a new SX4 its quite likely that you dont want to hear 'true' comments of your valued beauty. Maybe you are an automobile expert and know better than I do But here I have put forth my comments as a layman who has tested the vehicle.

  18. on 23 Jun, 2007 at 11:58 AM Atul

After looking at various Reviews in Auto Car Magazines, I was to book SX4 ( ZXi). But now looking at these reviews I am in two minds.
My Budget is Rs. 8L & most of the driving will be on Ex-Way on week ends. Total driving will be about 900 per month.
Can I get an opinion from owners of SX4 on my requirement?
    Atul

  19. on 24 Jun, 2007 at 07:21 AM Hemanth Kumar (Hyderabad)

Mr atul,Lalit ...dont just get carried away by the suggestions just test the cars... just touch and feel the sx4 its great value for money and safty features are the most important than any thing..(life is more presious than milage) except rear view while parking and a bit (5%) compromise on interiors... SX4 is the best in the segment... with top priority for the safty features....

Hi all, ive gone through the reviews im wondering that you all are talking of a budget of around 7.5 to 8L recently ive bought a Cedia which was earlier known as Elegance for around 9.75. now i find the prices have been reduced i wonder have any of you thought of the option that you could go for a Cedia from Mitsubishi. the car is very spacious, its got ABS,EBD, AIRBAGS ETC. and it gives an ok mileage of 11 in city and around 13-14 on highway with full blast A/c.

I am planning to buy a car. My budget is around 8L. I am interested to buy either SX4 or city ZXi. My driving is mostly in city & once in a month highway driving for weekend tour. My monthly KM running is around 700. Can any one please suggest which car I should buy SX4 or city ZXi?

  24. on 05 Jul, 2007 at 11:12 AM Sanjeet Taneja (New Delhi)

Suvankar, City will give a better mileage than SX4. I would suggest go for the City

  25. on 09 Jul, 2007 at 07:17 PM Rrkohli

sx4 is the best in its segment.....it has everything one can expect and with such a price tag one must go for it.....

  26. on 18 Jul, 2007 at 02:28 PM Omprakash Mishra

All this is crap written here.

I own this car and I can say City mileage is not 10 it is ~12 for the car with just 700km run. ( last time around 400km, I measured it was 11kmpl in city.) People after 1000km are claiming 13kmpl in city traffic.

    This review is biased.

Again drivability in city is good. I have not faced single problem for the same.

Reverse parking and rear view is matter of practice. No hues and cries for that.

  27. on 18 Jul, 2007 at 02:39 PM Sanjeet Taneja (New Delhi)

    Dear Omprakash

Please read expert comments on SX4 by car wale.com. They are giving the verdict of 10kmpl for SX4.

  28. on 18 Jul, 2007 at 03:31 PM Omprakash Mishra

    Mr. Sanjeet,
They test the car for some time. That does not mean everything they should know within that time. Again demo/test cars are most screwed up cars. I wont speed my own car beyond 80 kmph for initial run-in period. But demo car are ripped upto max red level of engine from day one. What to expect from that poor machine. That brings bad publicity. But one has to rely on actual users of it as I did. I got all real info from my friend who own it. Then I booked.
    That's my view & verified

  29. on 21 Jul, 2007 at 08:23 PM Hhjljj

i read all the reviews written here, i just read one review suggesting for cedia....most of them suggest city over sx4 ....well 1st of all i want to give more focus on this issue.....CITY IS BASICALLY A HATCHBACK CAR in foreign countries where it is successful so i know most of city owners feel some noise in rear portion of car as luggage room is created for indian market....otherwise all ok..now come to sx4 ...this is basically developed by fiat,gm and suzuki.

  30. on 31 Jul, 2007 at 01:25 PM Shruti

dear sanjeet hw can u say this without a test drive even i have took a test drive and i can proudly say that this is a best and best car i would have drive so pls do not underestimate any car before a test drive

Dear Experts, Please help me out. I would like to go in for a car in this range. My running is mainly in the city of approx 2500 - 3000 KMPM. Can anyone tell me how does SX4 perform if converted on CNG and any suggestions.

  32. on 14 Aug, 2007 at 06:09 PM Arun Nagpal (New Delhi)

Dear Mr Amit, SX4 is a new vhicle and still CNG fitting is not approved by Maruti, so if you get it installed.....warranty lapsed, unlike Maruti other cars where Maruti has approved and dealers take continued warranty even though maruti voids warranty.Alternate...in Ikon CNG is approved. I have CNG in my Wagon-R and is running @ 1.2 per km...worth investing 42000 with 3000 kmpm. In sedans....I have checked with honda city and aveo users with CNG, it's 1.5 per km.

    Hi
I am planning to buy a sedan car and short listed Verna Xi, Honda GXi and Fiesta 1.4 ZXI. My usage is around 1000 KM a month. I have gone through many reviews and am confused on mileage claims!! Please advise what mileage one can expect from these cars in city conditions and which one is recommended from value to money point of view.

  34. on 22 Aug, 2007 at 04:10 PM Abhibak

Hi Guys.... Same problem... budget upto 8 lks ..... What to buy ... thought SX4 is value for money but .... Verna petrol doesn't sound exciting either ... what r my options

  35. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 12:10 AM Jatin

hi abhibak, see for ur budget u can buy following cars- fiesta, aveo, city, verna and sx4.among these leave aveo(no offence but its not competitive enough)fiesta(1.6) is a nice car but dull looks, even the avg/pickup is sumwhat similar to sx4, but then high maint cost. verna is also a good option but since sx4 and verna fall in the nearly same price bracket, sx4 is more value for money and is better looking too....now we r left with 2 final cars.honda city and sx4.city-a gr8 all rounder but

  36. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 12:20 AM Jatin

its been more than 3 years since we have seen any changes in city where as sx4 is a new offering from mul and has all the goodies which u expect from a car above this segment.see city is no doubt a winner whn it cums to avg,no other car can beat her but if u calculate there is hardly a diff of 15% bet sx4 and city's avg.and city cost's abt 40-50k's more than sx4,so in long run there wont be much of a diff.i bought a sx4 last month n she is returning abt 11 in city with ac running all the time

  37. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 12:31 AM Jatin

till now i have done abt 1200 km n i still cant get over her.
KAMAL if u r planning to buy fiesta diesel thn plz dont cuz ur running is not much.for a diesel u must do atleast 2500 kms per month in order to cover the cost, that too it will take 3 years n only after that u can actually have the benefit of the price diff bet diesel and petrol so plz be cautious.yeah 1 more thing hyundai sells somewhere between 1500-2000 verna's every month out of whch 78% r diesel.i hope things r much clear now.

  38. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 12:32 AM Jatin

  39. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 12:55 AM Sanjeet Taneja (New Delhi)

City gives a mileage of 15kmpl as against 10-11kmpl from SX4 clearly a 50% better mileage. 2007 end early 2008 should see at least 4 new launches in this segment so wait & watch.

  40. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 05:48 PM Jatin

city gives no more than 13 in city, i have one(2006 gxi) and so do my frnds and we all get nearly same avg.it will give 15 only under standard conditions where u drive constant at 60 kmph with minimum use of break n least gear change possible but in real world its not possible.
dear sanjeet one more thing when u use the words "value for money" u shud noe what it means too.the price bracket that we all r talking abt, no other car gives as many features as d sx4 does.

  41. on 05 Sep, 2007 at 06:04 PM Jatin

lets not tlk abt wht we thnk, how abt d mass.tata sells abt 4300 indigo, marina and XL(pet n diesel) in total out of which only 10% comprises of XL that too it saw a decline of 6% this month lolz, where as maruti easily does 3000 sx4 alone every month.so ppl know which car is betr value 4 money n which not.and yea dere 's a thng called as brand value-pricing indigo next to merc wont make it a competitor to it.indigo is n will remain a entry level sedan.a level below sx4 n city-sad but true lolz

  42. on 11 Sep, 2007 at 12:06 PM Kapil (New Delhi)

Well, gone through all the debate happening here but no one talked about the best-in-class ground clearance, huge tyres, contemporary looks, overall size, safety & trim features (ZXi) and MUL tag of reliabiliy/service + resale value of SX4 - all this at a good price. Keep City apart, the fuel average of all other petrol cars in this category is nearly the same. In my view, SX4 is clearly a winner, atleast for now. I find the rear seat space as the only big minus. How many times wud you seat 5?

  43. on 11 Sep, 2007 at 09:53 PM Jatin

I don't agree entirely with Sanjeev, I own SX4 ZXI, which I have bought after lot of research. Please look at my review (sort by most recent option)which will enable you to have some insight. Though Indigo XL is loaded with Gizmos, it is no way comparable with SX4, in terms of quality and performance (my co. owns Indigo as well, and quality and maintanance is really an issue, also lacks refinement).

  45. on 14 Sep, 2007 at 10:38 PM Sreeni M

For someone who commented about car made by truck makers(TATA), Mercs and Volvos are also best truck and car makers at same time! There are lot of folks in India (mainly who haven't seen much outside India) who thinks anything "Maruti" is great! Only value for money from Maruti is Swift and everything else is overpriced by 50k to 1 lakh. Even "cheapest" M800 is overpriced.

  46. on 18 Sep, 2007 at 02:00 PM Kapil (New Delhi)

Sreeni - while your point is valid, you can't really compare the technology of Tata (cars/trucks) with Merc or Volvo. NVH levels of Tata cars are just unbearable. We as car buyers are still on the maturity curve and perceived 'value for money' is mostly what we look for. I wud never buy a Tata Indigo as a sedan, not diesel atleast. Tata knows this and hence, loaded with extras. Alto in my view is the most over priced vehicle from Maruti. Expect price cuts early next year. Thanks.

East Or West Honda Is The Best. After all my research in cars i finally bought a honda city gxi a month ago.i regret not buying a vtec but also it is 1 lac more.SX4 is only good for high performance driving.

    Vroom Vroom!

  48. on 26 Sep, 2007 at 08:10 PM Kishor

I dont believe in all the SX4 haters writings. I've purchased it last month and its performing well. Only the gear shift is little tight and the car drags too much while running in AC. but it is a clear winner in terms of ground clearance (useful in India's bumpy roads). Having driven a wide variety of cars both in India and abroad, I would say SX4 is better value for money.

    Hi all,
I went to all these reviews!
    What i saw here was-
    1. focus on the SX4's performance was lesser n the ego's of the participants in the discussion were more compared!

It wud b lot more helpful, if all intellects ovr here focus on the main issue!

What i cud finnaly conclude was the MAJOR COMPETITORS R THE "CITY" N THE "SX4". BUT, pl. give ur precious verdict!

  50. on 05 Oct, 2007 at 11:38 PM Paul

SX4 & Verna petrol are neck 2 neck. Verma handles better in traffic.Verna's pick up n gears R more smooth. Its also less noisier.Sx4 gives U some extra features for 20K less. Over all sx4 is a reasonable car.Verna overpriced.Verna looks sleeker.SX4 beefy & bigger.Sx4 facia looks b8r. verna's Lesser weight means slightly b8r milage. Maruti & Hyundai should b whipped for not keeping ABS in cars that cost 7.5 LAc around. maruti has b8R resell value. why buy verna diesel for city driving?

  51. on 10 Oct, 2007 at 01:18 PM Shailendra Sharma

hHi everyone...I have had the SX4 VXI for the last 3 months, I also have a CITY here is my assessment:
1.The cost of of the SX4 VXI at 6.5 lac on road delhi is the best for the Value received in return when compared to Verna which is over 7L.
2.I drive from Delhi to Gurgaon, AC is always on anytime of the day and I have as yet never got milage below 12.3
3.The power is phenomenal, the ease of overtaking others at ANY gear is reassuring
4.The car handles very weel on all kinds of terrain.

  52. on 10 Oct, 2007 at 01:26 PM Shailendra Sharma

Adding where I left. I have enjoyed driving the CITY howver the amazing milage is received because most of its parts are made of plastic reducing the weight which proves dangerous if an accident were to happen. I fortunately have never driven a TATA car but know that most of the stalled cars are INDICA, INDIGO etc. The 1 lac rupee car would probably be human power driven

  53. on 10 Oct, 2007 at 01:30 PM Shailendra Sharma

    and more
    Best Engine - Honda
Best Gear Box - Hyundai Verna (I just love the smooth Hyundai gear shift, I have a Santro)
    Best Pickup - SX4
    Best Seating Position - SX4
    Best Ground Clearence - SX4
Back Seat - How many times have we seated 3 people in the back seat?
Owners car - SX4 and Verna (however Verna is more expensive)

  54. on 10 Oct, 2007 at 10:01 PM Sk Sahu (Hyderabad)

Be practical Guys. If you are paying a premium only for mileage (for opting Honda city) then think when you will break-even (if opt for SX4). For 1500 kms/month, you need more than 4 years for it. Moreover, the cost of spares of Maruti is much much lesser than the Honda. In the long run SX4 is the winner i.e. "Value for Money"

    - Susant

My co brother is repenting so much after having bought a city last decemeber. I have a SX4 Zxi bought about a month back and am very happy about its overall performance compared to any car in that segment. Its amazing car at that price. I have done about 3 months of research before deciding on Sx4.

The nippon cd/mp3 player in the car absolutely sucks big time. First of all, Nippon audiotronix seems to be a delhi based company and second is that they don't even have a website. These facts are enough to dismiss the stereo system as total crap. Atleast hyundai verna crdi though more expensive has a kenwood in it. We would rather prefer to have nothing instead of a cheap local deck made in delhi. Its not only insulting to the customers but also dents maruti's image.

    Hi,
How many times hav u filled the boot??
For Mileage, pick up and driveability: Swift Vdi (ABS) is the best pick - It's a Hatch but the car's dynamics and high speed drive factor is really good.
If boot is a mandate!! (pick based on ur req)

If u r not diving more than 1400 Kms per month - the cost factor is averaged by the amount u spend on a diesel engine!

    Hi friends,
All that hue and cry is absurd, about opining for an ultimate car in C-segment. All cars are good, but our priorities are to be made clear first.Wats the point talking of mileage when the priority is of using the vehicle on bad roads daily or wats the point talking about GC when the person drives daily on good smooth roads. In all of my test drives that i have done before settling down, i believe from all reasons SX4 as the best in terms of drivable vision and ease, as also of gett

contd..getting in and out and parking and seeing which pothole my car is going into..etc. Sufficient boot space and city pick up, engine refinement and best of all the no fear of driving on bad roads or in water logged areas. Over all a feeling of driving an SUV with a carlike exterior that gels with my status as a lawyer. Best i can take it to a date, eve-Party, and for a country side vacation..Think this way too.

i have taken test drives of sx4 zxi, city & aveo & i feel sx4 is the best car in its segment. just about 10mm short of reaching segment d. it has all the features & even more than that of city vtec which is about 1.2 L more than sx4. it has more pros than cons.

I own SX4 zxi and in spite of my being new to driving I have got around 11.5 kmpl in city driving before the first service. Peole are getting up to 13 kmpl in Delhi alone. and around 15 to 16 on highways.
Secondly you just can not compare Indigo to SX4. take a test drive and you will come to know what is meant by engine refinement and pleasure of driving both in city and on highways. For people looking to buy sx4 please read reviews by the actual owners of it.

Sanjeet...........You comparing indigo with SX4!! you must be kidding dude...
SX4 features Style, Comport, Performance n Safety nearing Honda Civic...which costs around 13lacs...
You guys see the difference b/w 7.5lac and 13lac??

I am planning to buy SX4 next week, but seeing such kind of reviews I am in total confusion. Could any one give the right one from VERNA Diesel, Ford Fiesta, SX4 & Honda City.

just a point to add regarding the "nippon audiotronix" ,though they are a delhi based company ,their bizness is dealing as the sole provider of kenwood car audio system in India and that is the system inside the swift and SX4. they are the ppl who are dealing with circutry required for the audio system in the car

I was driving an E class Mercedes in UK, and I have driven BMW, Audi etc. In india if you want value for money go for SX4,no doubt about it. Good power, comfort and performance. If you have more money go for skoda. Dont even think of buying a TATA car. If you have worried about plastic and cheap interiors,u have to spend more money and buy a MERC or BMW. I own an SX4 in India.

    Hi,

I am planning to purchase a sedan. I have shortlisted Ford Fiesta 1.4 ZXi (Diesel), SX4 ZXi and Honda City 2008.
Your feedback/inputs are going to be very helpful in order to make a wise choice.

    Thanks,
    Ashish
