i'll start with the cons first
1.For a car with a wheel base of 2500 mm and length of nearly         4450mm interior space is very less.
2.Rear seats r not very comfortable and the arm rest is way to big and is not comfortable enought for 3 passengers to fit in
3.One can actually hear engine n valve noise inside the cabin which was not there to be found in baleno
4.Fuel efficiency will not be very good cause it weighs abt 1200 killo's and already baleno was not very frugal.i know its a diff series engine but still
5. Lack of torque, car rattles when picked up from second gear from 0
Now the good part
1. Jam packed with features, You name it n she has it(please before naming the features also look at the price, dont expect seat massagers from a 7 lakh rupee car)
2 .Interior quality is good. a big step ahead from maruti. step inside and u wont blv its a maruti
3. Ground clearance is high 190mm(only is the zxi, becuz of the tyres, otherwise its 180 for the vxi model).so u can slam ur cars on the speed breakers withouth damaging the base.
4. Driving positing is comfortable(since u can adjust the steering wheen n the seats).thought its not as comfortable as fiesta's.even whicle driving at high speeds its not as planted as fiesta.
Comparison with the Class
Its a mix package.....
U dont get the performance of CITY V-TECH but its abt a lakh cheaper than it
U dont get fuel efficiency of CITY ZX but it comes much much more loaded than city
U dont get that sporty and driver's car feel like that of FIESTA'S but u get everything else like space, features and comfort.
VERNA petrol n AVEO dont have much to offer... except comfortable ride(both) and interior quality(AVEO) apart from this SX4 beats them in almost every aspect.
so final verdict....city still rules becuz its the most frugal and refined car in this segment(apart from this she sucks.....sluggish performance, artificial steering feel, awkward sitting pistion for the driver, front view not satisfactor)

if u look at the price, equipments and huge maruti network i think it is worth going for SX4!!!
P.S please wait for the final verdict from the professionals

how is the engine refinement compared to a Honda city GXI?
I still feel honda has an edge over its engine refinment compared to suzuki engines.
    Your opinion appreciated.

  2. on 29 May, 2007 at 12:42 AM Jatin

see as far as refinement is compared, honda is well ahead...
this M series engine of suzuki is very silent at start but once u go beyong 5000 rpm mark it gets a bit voilent, and the pickup.....it nearly dies after 5000 rpm mark, but then in real life we hardly go beyond this mark, do we?
honda has its own charm....its not as punchy as suzuki but its not far behind..on papers suzuki is way ahead of honda in terms of power(78 bhp honda VS 102 bhp of suzuki)
but on tarmac there is not much of a d

Thanks for this review which is quite informative. Pl revert on follwoing aspects :
    1. Is it really worth to go for Zxi by spending Rs 75000 extra ?
    2. I came to know through somebody that alloy wheels reduce the mileage by 1-2km/ltr, is it correct ?
    3. For a nuclear family like mine (myself, wife & one daughter), which segment I should go with. I am little bit confused. The city travel is 500 km and on highways it would not be more than 500 km in month. I can spend upto 6 lacs.
    Pl guide me

  4. on 23 Jun, 2007 at 11:52 PM Jatin

    thanks Mr om prakash!!!!!
first thing first yes it is worth paying extra dosh for zxi, reason-just calculate-for 75k u get 2 airbags, alloy wheels, climatic control, abs, steering mounted controls, music system, drive seat height adjustment etc....so u see its worth n besides vxi has nothing to offer..its absolutely empty
secondly-no alloy wheels have nothing to do with mileage neither +ive nor -ive(just think for ur self, alloys r infact a bit lighter why in the world would they decrease the milea

  5. on 24 Jun, 2007 at 12:29 AM Jatin

for 6 lakh there is only 1 car logan 1.6 petrol. call me nuts but this car worth buying..
good ride, good mileage, space is huge, cheap spare parts n mahindra's backup.draw back--the shape n interior r not very attractive, apart from this its a vry solid package, mahindra has already sold 3000+ cars frm its launch(amazing no?)
    otherwise,just extent ur budget to 6.4 n u'll get fiesta-nice car,vry good fuel economy,excellent ride
if cant extent..luk nowhere buy swift-A true VFM car,"perfect" for ci

Good review Mr.Jatin! Quite an informative one. Appreciate the enthu shown! Just contemplating as you said you hear sound/noise of the engine after sometime. Please tell me more about that. I am contemplating between City Gxi & SX4... Spending 8-8.5 lakhs on a Maruti Car? Does it look like one? Will it have a resale value in 4-5 years?

    hi there Mr sairam D
first of all i would like to thank u for appreciating my review.
now abt the engine noise--well its not the engine which is at fault, actually the cabin is not well insulated to keep the engine noise(at high revs, particularly after 3500 rpm) n tyre noise out.but its sumthing which one can live with.
choosing between city gxi n sx4,i would suggest u to go for sx4(i bought a sx4 zxi on 9th of this month).its a fab car, but average is not sumthing to write home abt.

  9. on 27 Aug, 2007 at 03:01 PM Jatin

i have done abt 1012 kms n have filled 91 ltrs(so 11.1 kmpl)with ac,considering i have done 30% driving on the highway i think avg is not that bad(would cum out to be 10kmpl in city).honda scores in this field + engine refinement.mid range torque is amazing, u'll love to drive bet 2800 n 4500 rpm.gizmos r gr8, sadly missing in city.
resale has to be gud cuz maruti is known 4 resale(baleno never did well at the 1st place so an exception whereas sx4 still is on a waiting period so u can imagine)

  10. on 27 Aug, 2007 at 03:03 PM Jatin

so go ahead n buy the car.....all the best n happy driving.for more info u can also email me at jatin18us@yahoo.com

    Hi jatin,
nice & very informative review. i am still confused bet'n sx4 & fiesta. cons i heard are---
1]sx4-- bad rear view for parking & bad milage
2]fiesta--- no resale & heavy ment.
which should i ignore & go for.

  12. on 04 Sep, 2007 at 10:11 PM Jatin

hi amit, see there is not much of a diff between fiesta petrol(1.6) and sx4's mileage, and rear view parking is not that bad, i drive one daily its just that since the rear is a bit high it gets a lil diff to see(but not much).
yes fiesta has poor resale value n a heavy ment, whereas sx4 shud have a gud resale cuz its a maruti and since nearly all the parts are shared with swift so ment shud be low.
sx4 is more spacious, comfi, has feel good factor, bettr lokin n ride.
bet the 2 u shud go for s

  13. on 04 Sep, 2007 at 10:44 PM Jatin

sx4 .i hope u know there's a waiting for nearly 1.5 months but its worth waiting.
    take care and happy driving

wonderful comments jatin. Since you started your review with the negatives than the positivees, should i consider that negatives outweight positives?. I am looking for a car in the 6.5L range. currently own a santro xing in excellent condition. between verna, sx4, & fiesta which one would you prefer. i am not much concerned about the resale value. length wise are all these cars same?. pl email me on sgundewar@hotmail.com.-- Satish G

    Hi,
I also use SX4 ZXI on daily basis. Share your views and to add :
    a) In bumper to bumper traffic and bad roads ( Mumbai - MIDC Area in monsoon ) I am only getting only 8Kmpl ? I am mostly in gear 2,3,&4
completed 1st Service and done so far 643Kms
    b) Even I observe ( and hear ) the noise. I am a bit worried about it.
    c) I had my front wiper broken within 20 days of purchase
    d) I have installed rear parking system ( Rs 7000) and its of great use for reverse and parking.

  17. on 20 Sep, 2007 at 01:12 AM Jatin

8 km is very less, see it all depends upon the way a person drive.what i do is whenever im on 3rd gear i accelerate till 40 n shift it directly 2 5th gear, this helps in incre the avg but not much.make sure that the tyre pressure is 33 on all the wheels and while pulling the car dont accelerate too hard,be gentle specially while in 1st gear cuz at this gear only the car sucks up the max petrol.and turn off the engine at red lights only if its more than 2 mins, otherwise u'll be wasting ur fuel

  18. on 20 Sep, 2007 at 01:25 AM Jatin

about the noise--it is normal, i even went to the maruti service center and they too confirmed the same.
quality issues r always there with maruti but breaking of parts is sumthing new.did the maruti ppl change the wiper or no?
i too have installed the rear parking sensor but mine costed 3100, may be ur's is more advanced one.
1 more thing ppl driving sx4 vxi will get a little more avg than the one's driving zxi-because of the tyre size and a little diff in weight(abs n airbags n other stuff)

    Hi Jatin,
Its me again .... trying to do what you suggested ( to impv Fuel Efficiency:
    a) Race to 40 and move from 3rd to 5th
    b) instead of turning off at signals , I am moving it into Neutral ... your views ?
    c) I also observe that the car is getting heated up , is this normal ? (SX4 - ZXi )
    d)

    hello Mr.Saxenan
no its not normal for ur car to heat up, please check the temperature needle n lemme know where does it lie at majority of time.....and fuel efficiency always improves after a couple of months n say abt 3000-4000 kms.by then the engine is all tuned n oiled up n gets synchronized.

Hi Jatin..Thanks for your valuable tips.I am confused between SX4, Avio & fiesta. I hardly drive 8kms a day with lots of traffic. Also i'm looking in a range of 6.5 to 7.5lacs.Major concern for me is space as having less parking space and millage plus mentainance. Is cevrolet and ford vehicles are too costly on mentainance part. Pls suggest.

Hi Jatin. Thanks for a honest and an interesting review.

I am planning to buy SX4 after extensive research, I narrowed down to SX4 leaving out other options I had- Fiesta, Verna and City(I am actually tired of seeing the City on the road..so I had decided to go for something fresh and new).
What exactly is a reverse parking sensor? How doest it helps in easing the parking process? Is it being provided by Maruti or some other dealers?

  29. on 11 Nov, 2007 at 11:59 AM Sunit Sukumaran (Mumbai)

Also I would like to ask if the rear of SX4 really uncomfortable? I mean to ask about the leg-space and the middle rear seat comfort with the arm rest folded back. I am yet to test drive the car. Could you enlighten me a bit about the boot space too.

    Thanks.

  30. on 14 Nov, 2007 at 11:06 PM Jatin

hi sunit. reverse parking sensor is a device( a small screen rather abt the size of normal mobile phone screen) which is wired to 4 sensors that r drilled into the rear bumper.they get activated only while reversing.whn they sense any object nearby they start displaying the approx distance n also make a beep sound.they the distance decreases the number also decreases and the beep sound increases.thus allowing u to know the exact distance between ur car n the object behind u

abt the rear seat....its very comfortable.the only problem is that the center arm rest is very thick thus is doesnt allow the person sitting in the center to lay his back completely on the seat.but its not uncomfortable....one would feel as if he is sitting on a straight seat or a stool....infact i went to jaipur with 5 ppl on board n none of them complained.

    great review jatin..
is it true that sx4 interiors are clumsy & cheap plastic is used which gives away easily.

Hi Jatin.i m planning 4 a mid sizer with good suspension. i own a swift diesel and some how not happy with its suspension and low ground clearance.i hve shortlisted the sx4 and fusion diesel.eager to know bout the ride quality and suspension of both the cars.

  35. on 06 Feb, 2008 at 09:59 PM Jatin

    hi pradeep
sx4 has better ground clearance than fusion and is value for money, and is better than fusion in terms or ride quality and creature comfort.
besides fusion isn't doing that good numbers also in terms of sales.
i hardly see ne fusion on the road....its a nice car though but people here are not ready for cars of this segment yet.

    Dear Jatin
    Good morning
I am planning to buy a sedan in the price range of 6 - 8 lacs, I am based in Ranchi and my family includes wife and two kids. My monthly driving would be approximately 700km city drive. I have gone through the reviews of various cars in this segment and have zeroed down on SX4- ZXi and Honda city GXi.Please suggest which one of these two should I go in for?

  39. on 14 May, 2008 at 04:33 PM Puneet Kaushik (Bangalore)

    Hello Everyone,

Great discussion and reviews about SX4.

My dad has a SX4 Vxi, 2nd servicing done, and is not used to much, 5-10 KM normal and also not much traffic. Sometimes we drive on Highways, say 500 KM twice in 6 months.

This time when I went home I felt it power and performance is not as good as it was new, where it should have improved.

Has anybody seen something like this?? will SX4's engine power and pickup deteriorate with time?

    Thanks for any help.
    Puneet

    Hi Jatin
I am Shantanu from Delhi . Let me first thank you for the valuable inputs you have given for SX4 . I wanted your views on CNG kit being put in SX4 ? I have seen two cars ( SX4 ) in our neibhourhood with the CNG kit on them . The owners are satisfied but to the flip side the warranty stands cancelled once CNG is put on the car . I have heard that Maruti Dealers would start putting CNG kits at their workshops . But the clarity on warranty remains unclear . Any idea on this ?

  41. on 10 Jun, 2008 at 10:11 PM Jatin

    hi there shantanu,
if u get the cng kit fitted by outside it will def cancel ur warrenty but if u get it done through a authorised maruti dealer the warrenty will remain intact - 100% sure abt it

  42. on 13 Jun, 2008 at 07:04 PM Shantanu Guha

    Hi Jatin
I have gone ahead & bought SX4 ZXi . The dealer in Delhi has stated that they dont have any plans to instal CNG kit in the car . But no regrets for going in for the car . Its simply awesome .

  43. on 14 Jun, 2008 at 11:34 AM Udayveer

    Hi Guys,

This car is really good, i am waiting to buy this year. do someone have an idea about the Diesle engine in SX4 when its is going to be there or not.

    Thanks in advance....

    Uday.

  44. on 22 Dec, 2008 at 10:14 PM Amit

    Dear Jatin
Im confused between the SX4 and Swift Desire. Heard the mileage on swift is better but space is cramped. What about other features. Would appreciate your views
    Amit (Delhi)
