I have always admired Safari's great looks for a few years now but it was after the recent drop in prices (approx. 1.5 lacs in June '06) and a desire to move onto diesel (lower running costs + cleaner burning fuel) and SUV (don’t need one when I am 60) that I took a closer look at this vehicle. Only the Indian SUVs came close to my already stretched budget! And a natural first choice based purely on looks put the Safari ahead of the Scorpio. A decent test drive (Concorde, Bangalore – friendly and not pushy at all) and I am ready to share my experience. The drive itself was OK - I need to get used to diesel (currently have a Hyundai Accent petrol) and it's vibration and sluggishness. I also need to get used to the space inside - it is huge, however the quality of interiors was a little disappointing - the plastic used was cheap molded type, clearly lacking in quality. Same with the upholstery fabric - very cheap quality, must replace types. The braking was fine except for the fact that the vehicle seemed to pull a shade towards the left. The other odd issue was with the sound the power steering made when making an U-turn. Rear seat riders (wife and daughter) enjoyed the quick cooling from the overhead AC, felt secure in spite of the rocking and swaying on short stretches of rough roads. The only other disappointment was the lack of airbags in the EX variant. My research from the Internet and talking to friends leads me to suspect about poor service, lack of readily available parts - but I am still leaning towards getting one and believe that it is fair value for money, amazing space, and a sure head turner of a car.

Epilogue:   I finally got my black Safari EX in '06 and am glad I did.

i driven new safari dicor top model but still i was un satisfied with that veichle coz they used cheap quality of interiors and poor upholstery and there is a small sound noise will come if u clearly observe while turning still tata company has to look after these problems

Narayan K.P (New Delhi) | People! I just took a test drive of the brand new Safari Dicor 2.2VTT EX at Him Motors. A very decent drive again. I must say, TATA has looked upon the interiors seriously in this version. EX comes with Two Tone Beige Interiors which makes the cabin 'look' even more spacious. The Plastics used are of very good quality, can be easily compared with the 'Hondas'. Highlights: Tilted and small steering wheel and small gear rod give it a luxurious look and a comfortable driv

I am planning to have a new car and arguably(with my family)want it to be an SUV, and as Vineet suggested i dont wnat to own one when I am 60. The looks are so smashing that whenever I see one, my heart pounds to get one. The only worry is the maintenance. Everyone tells me that something or the other goes wrong with the car after 1 yr. Any feedback on that?? Pls send me your feedback on sandeep.grover@credence.co.in. It would be of great help.

    Thanks...Sandeep Grover

for all those who were happily cheaper plastics of maruti vehicles namesly van, 800, zen and even hyundais i dont see nothing wrong witht he cheap plastics of safari its a bigger car than say a skoda fabia for that price range. in india the foriegn make cars mainly european ones have good interiors, the japs are still way behind . I salute TATA for providing a poormans suv to the masses in grande sumo and the safari its meant to take the rough roads of india.

I have been planing to buy 4x2 dicor Ex desiel. Could you tell me whats milage/liter, maintainess cost etc of SAFARI. Company says 14.4 km on highway and 10.4 km in city.I have esteem with CNG fitted and its very very economical. It cost me maximum Rs1/-per km so i want that SAFARI shouldn't cost me more than Rs 2/- per km.If I buy SAFARI then i will keep it for 7-8 yrs.I go to PUNJAB 3-5 times a year so i think riding in SAFARI is much safer than car and its spacious

Sham, For my 4x2 Dicor Ex, I get a 9 km/liter and on the higways the best i have got is 11.5 km/liter (avg speeds of 90 - 100kms/hr with ocassional top speeds of 135km/hr). Maintainence costs vary (avg 4 - 6K per service) depending on mileage and complaints.

I am planing for a safari 4x2 Ex model. Some told me the milage we get on long drive is just 12 km and in the city its less than 9 km/lt. Is it true? How about the regular service expences? Please give me an idea about the querries.

I am using a tata car for the last three years. Even though there are problems with cheap plastics, refinement, lack of quality and reliability when it comes to network of service centres & spare parts cost tata scores over others. Since the new safari shares the engine with new SUMO the availibilty of service centres may not be an issue at all. We are buying an SUV not for city use, so I feel service centre is something which we really look into

Asish, I can see that you are a true Tata fan - and so am I! There is no shortage of Tata service centers but only a small faction of them have the capability to service Safaris. I agree that the cost of spares is significantly lower, it's just that some of the lower end spares like small plastic/rubber items are not stocked at all - I have been asking and waiting for some for now more than a year!

Tata is still very good value for my money.

    Hi Safari Admirers,
I own a Safari 2001 model & has logged 98000 kms. The engine is very good & I don't want to loose it. But the SUV is showing wear & tear. Hence I want to overhaul everything, viz. wiring, AC ducting, interiors etc. Please guide me / suggest a good service centre in Mumbai who can do all the above responsibly?. Happy to receive early suggestions.
