Ok here it is; my 2 cents on the Petrol Linea. Had been waiting for a while to get my hands on the petrol version and so was quite excited when the dealer here in Delhi called me up to say that I could get a TD of the petrol engined Linea. I must say that before the TD , my mind was biased towards it being a sluggish car based on the Tech specs; 1.2 tons and only 89 bhp to power it? I had my doubts, but then again the old Honda City(not the VTEC) was only 77 bhp and well, nobody said nothing about that being a slowcoach!!!

Start the car, and one would have to listen hard, and I mean really hard,  to hear the engine ticking over in the bonnet. Instantly , one gets the feeling that this car belongs to a segment higher than the one it is in. Slot the gear into 1st, and the car pulls away effortlessly. It's not going to pin you to the back of your seat when you suddenly hit the pedal to the metal, but it surges ahead gently, which will definitely be appreciated by the co-passengers as they wont get to experience that jerkiness  which one would experience with sudden acceleration.
{ At this point, I think I should make one thing clear that I'm not looking to emulate a certain M.Schumacher or even trying to set a new lap record in my Grand Prix to nowhere. No Sir ; This car is being evaluated as a family sedan that will be comfortable, luxurious, and safe for the three of us(me, the mrs. and our 2 year old baby girl).  For all my racing aspirations, I have a 1.6 GTX Palio with a free flow air intake, dual Elevo air intake superchargers and of course the headers with the free flow exhaust.}

OK back to Linea drive. The steering is definitely lighter than in its diesel engined sibling and the FIRE breathing car also feels much lighter and quicker to drive, simply because of the absence of turbo lag. But the thing that really blew me away was this; 4 people in the car, 3rd gear, 20 kmph speed and the car never felt like it was gasping for air; instead, it was crawling along peacefully in the traffic that we encounter in our daily commute. Step on the gas, and the linear acceleration of the Linea pulls you away with a kind of smoothness that is yet to be experienced in a car of this segment. As the speed builds, so does the confidence. Didn't have to think twice or stamp on the brakes, to negotiate the almost 90 degree corner at speeds nearing the 90 kmph mark; instead, the process was very straightforward; just point and shoot and the Linea held its line without any hint of understeer(something that front wheel drive cars are famous for) .

Big smile on my face, scary look of disbelief on the sales executive's face, and we proceeded sedately back to the showroom. Time to calm him down and what better way than to play some soothing music on 6 speaker Blaupunkt system. Luckily I'd carried my cd of "Death Cab for Cutie" and proceeded to fine tune the bass, treble and equalizer settings to my taste. While most people would be happy with the quality of sound, but honestly I feel something is missing; like maybe a 12 inch bass tube and a couple of 4 channel and monobloc amps to really feel the music. The guy said that any modification to the electrical system of the car(read wiring) would deem the warranty null and void . Hmm, I guess then I'll have to have all this done by the dealership itself which didn't seem to be problem with him. I'd also wanted first hand to check out the Trip computer with all its special  functions but these can't be accessed through the buttons on the steering wheel. Instead one has to use the button that is located on the windshield wiper control stalk to the right of the steering. One needs to press it again and again to cycle through the menu on the Trip computer display; not very user friendly, at least for me.

But what about spares and after sales service ? The great thing is that the Linea needs to be serviced at intervals of 15k, which means that you could finish the three free services for a brand new Maruti while there would still be 5k km to go before the Linea is even due for an oil change!!! Spares ? According to the dealer, Fiat cant afford to screw up this time and they've taken steps to ensure no problems in this dept. I want to believe him, I really do, but I wont till i see it for myself. But this is a brand new dealership in Okhla, Delhi. Everything looks clean, polished and i made sure to explore the service area and was quite impressed by the manner in which the cars were being treated.

Happy, with what I had seen and felt, I now have to finally decide whether to trust Fiat again with my hard earned money. Will they be able to love and care for my car the way I do ? What about the resale value of the car? Such questions come to mind but then.... its settled. The Linea, true to it's catch line, is a very attractive car. It has a kind of magnetic personality, a charisma which just draws one to it. The Italians have always been known to make beautiful things; and who doesn't love beautiful things. I'm a full blooded man and yes, mine will be the Flamenco Red one.

" I'm a war, of head versus heart,
And it's always this way.
My head is weak, my heart always speaks,
Before I know what it will say."

Update 17/06/09 :. The Red got very common and I wanted mine to be special, one in a Billion! Went for the vocal white instead!Yes, I have my very own Emotion Petrol to add to my Palio GTX.  So, she's in the workshop now getting transformed. Hope to get her back by the weekend in her new avtar. Will write about the detailed "Transformation" .

I think this review is been given by a person from Fiat company only........I have driven the car ...its comfortable....but the engine noise inside the cabin is high.......Other things are perfect in the car......

  5. on 04 Feb, 2009 at 09:25 PM Antony

My test drive experience differs from that of this review. The Petrol engine was very sluggish and I had to depress 3/4th of the A pedal to get going at 1st & 2nd gear. The mileage indicated by the trip meter was a pathetic 7km/ltr. The max power of the engine is available at 6000rpm and not 4000 as given here. Astonishingly, no auto magazine has evaluated the mileage of the petrol version of Linea. The prospective buyers would appreciate an explanation from Fiat on this count.

  6. on 05 Feb, 2009 at 09:09 AM Carsanova (New Delhi)

Dear Mr.Anonymous, this review is for the Petrol Linea not the Diesel one(maybe your comments about engine noise would be more apt in the right place). And NO, I'm not from Fiat, but have been using one(Fiat Palio 1.6 GTX, DL 3CF 8895) for the last 7 years and hence am in a good position to highlight the nature of Fiat's DISMAL after sales service and spares support. This is my only worry as far as the Linea is concerned.

  7. on 05 Feb, 2009 at 09:33 AM Carsanova (New Delhi)

Dear Mr.Antony, one question; were you looking at the overall mileage indicator or the real time one? A test drive car is driven very erratically (given the no. of people who drive it and their varying driving styles)and hence one cannot expect fantastic mileage. Also, nowhere in my review is any reference to the max. power being available at XXXX rpm.(Me thinks you mistaken). And the reason why no Auto mag commented on the Petrol car is because they were only given the diesel variant to test.

Hello Sir...i am Subhash K.S from Bangalore. On 12-Feb-2009 i booked PL Emotion Pack.Yep i agree with your Specs about linea.I would like to know how much we would expect.Around 12-14 in City..?.
I liked the interiors, vastly better than SX4 & new City at this price..I just wonder why they haven't used a single polished wooden piece on dash...like Verna...That will be superb, top of the line..anyhow still it scores about all by all means..

  9. on 13 Feb, 2009 at 04:46 PM Carsanova (New Delhi)

HI Subhash, I think its safe to say that the Petrol Linea will give about 14 kmpl in the city. My brother in law is just taking delivery of his Linea today. So, expect an exhaustive test drive report soon.

    Cheers !!!

    hi carsanova,
i liked the linea review - seems fair.
i'm a diehard fiat fan and have owned a petrol siena for almost seven years now, with great passion and satisfaction. yes, has been hard to get spares for the car but not necessarily impossible. and i do feel fiat can't afford to goof up, after the initial disaster. so the tata tie up ought to work.
why don't you drive and rate a deisel version ? you seem to have the technical experience. suggest what you'd prefer.

can any body tell me about any speciality of this FIRE petrol engine, as all the reviews are about multijet diesel engine only..

  12. on 02 Mar, 2009 at 04:22 PM Kamal Sanghvi (Chennai)

    Hi Mr.C..Nova
I too have a fiat palio and as told by you spares are only problem, but till date i have not got any major problem, i test drove fiat linea emotion petrol version and it was simply amazing...i am definitely planning to have one ;-)

  13. on 10 Mar, 2009 at 05:19 PM Silverman

I took the test drive of the 1.4 Petrol LINEA and I totally agree with the view. I did not notice any lack of power given the size and weight of the car - I test drove all of LINEA's competitors - SX4, CITY, VERNA and FIESTA. I paid the deposit on 26th February and waiting for my black emotion pack end March.
By the way, any news on delivery schedule for Empotion pack petrol - Prerana motors Bangalore have told me 5 weeks latest....

  14. on 11 Mar, 2009 at 08:58 AM Carsanova (New Delhi)

    Hi Silverman,
Official waiting period is about 39 days too, here in Delhi, but if u pull a few strings, you can reduce your agony. I managed to get my friend, a Flamenco Red Emotion Linea in a week. But that was 2 weeks ago. He's clocked about 800 km as of yesterday(FE: 11.5 km/l with a/c, city driving) and his love affair with the Italian lady has, so far, been rosy! The Fiat guys too have been treating him nice, but some of the dealerships still don't have floor mats, mud flaps, accessories.

    hi friends
i have tested both petrol n disel more than 12 times.i have booked fire 1.4 top model in red color, as i m not in love with disel engines.
power is realy less in petrol for this huge car n this looks really pretty. i test drove new honda city also, power is good in 1st n 2nd gear but in 3rd onwards, it is same like linea. though i like sitting of NHCity which was very very comfortable in compared to linea, driving in linea looks to me tiresome, dono y

yesterday i had test drive of Linea Diesel...i find every thing perfect except two things 1 its pick up bit slow 2 sitting inside its too noisy in 1 & 2 gear..can some tech expert can guide me about some technical specifications like power etc. i am comparing it with verna which is giving decent pick up..i am having palio diesel but i found pick up of linea is even less than that of course difference of engine power...

Hi Mr Carsanova, I would like to appreciate the way you have drafted the review.I would like ur advice on buying the Fiat Linea.Instead of the Diesal model I am preferring Linea Petrol version over the Hyundai Accent which comes with CNG option. Is that ok?Moreover is it possible to fit a CNG/LPG kit on Linea?

  18. on 15 Apr, 2009 at 10:53 PM Deepak

    Hi Carsanova,
I am into cars a lot and have found your review a good one and does justice to the car, just hope fiat would have dne better promotion as they have winer in their hands. Only thing the need to look into is the engine noise travelling into cabin.....all else is good

    Hi There,

I own a MJD and i am very impressed with the car, I was hestitant in buying it coz for a simple reason of after sales service, but i must thanks fiat on the same with Tata's, I went to goa within a month of buying the car, and i got a mileage of 21KMPL, i am very impressed with the car performance and i have started recomending to people to buy fiat and i am sure this will be the biggest comeback for any auto makers n the world after being packed and sent back to his home.

    Dear C,
Loved your review about the Linea. I test drove her (the petrol) a short while ago and a agree with you. I'm about to buy a new car hence this querry as the heart & the head are going in the opposite directions. LINEA or SX4 or the verna as there would be and occasional drive into the mountains and definitely will be keeping her for 8 to 10 years.

    Dear Carsanova,
Really loved your review. You would really do well as a car journo...or why not have your own car blog? As for me , my hopes for buying this car is doomed by the fact that my nearest fiat dealer, service centre is 500km away. Seems that all tata dealerships dont stock fiats :(

  23. on 02 Jul, 2009 at 02:04 PM S S Joshi (Pune)

I own a Fiat Linea 1.4 FIRE . Have done 800 kms so far . I am a careful( read slow -max speed 80 kmph driver) . I get @ 13.8 km pl with about 50% with AC on.
No other issues except- the petrol lid catch broke on the first day

    Hi ,
i am hooked up between SX4 ZXI and Fiat Linea Emotion PK Petrol version.

I need help in deciding the car i should go for. I have checked everything SX4 and linea but m unable to decide.
Heart say Linea is good option as i have been using UNO for 8 years and been fan of fiat.
But due to its after sale service, which been a bad experience mind says to go with SX4.

Can anyone help me with this ASAP

    Vishal Shah

  25. on 20 Jul, 2009 at 05:46 PM Deepak S Fernandes

    Hi all (and Vishal),

I had all but decided on the SX4 as it was really good value for money (plus safety), but now I read all the good stuff about the Linea Emotion and I'm starting to wonder too.

What about the crucial bits of 1. After sales service (has anyone experienced this so far?),
2.after-sales parts -- are they more expensive than Maruti? How much more?
    3. Resale value (ok, too early to tell, but any idea?)
    4. Quality of the car after a few months of use? Esp. after rains?

  26. on 20 Jul, 2009 at 08:39 PM Carsanova (New Delhi)

hi, The car gets better after a a couple of Ks on the odometer. Much smoother than when new and the biggest surprise is the acceleration; used to feel a bit restricted when it was new but now the engine is free revving and pickup is much better and the 1st and 2nd gears don't feel as short as before. Spares are cheap; ask for a comparo from your local Fiat dealer. After sales; I'm very happy. Much better than before. Mileage - 12 km/l in the city with the AC on at all times.

Status Update for Emotion Multijet at 6000 kms:
    1. Right Hand Side Shocker strut changed - Replaced under warranty. Apparently they have guidelines to replace it for all. So check and report any unusal noise in your shockers!
    2. Jarring noise from Under the engine - They again did something to rectify.
    3. Mileage has never crossed 16.8 km/ltr (My old Fiesta did 21 km/ltr on the same route)

Ok Guys.....Today I will take the delivery of my beauty....Bussa Nova White 1.4 Emotion Pack.
Did think abt City, SX4, but honestly fell in love with Linea.
I had a palio before which was a wonderful car to drive but did manage to make deep holes in the pocket with the terrible maintenance set-up and FE. But still my heart rolled for the Linea knowing that the FE, space would not be as great as that of City. After Sales should be better with Tata's stepping in.

  34. on 04 Sep, 2009 at 12:16 PM Surya (Mumbai)

Many have spoken of the power, well not comparing the City, the car manages to pull off decently on a highway / traffic conditions under full load conditions.
Also remember that the City is always over priced in Indian Market and dearer by 1.3 lacs to the Linea.

I purchased the Linea Petrol Emotion last Friday .This car is a great value for money. The Tata dealer Concorde were very helpful & polite. Linea is slow in 1st & 2nd gear . The meaning of 1st & 2nd gear are like that. It is so smooth & silky. Grat come back of Fiat!Hond City to cry!

  37. on 21 Sep, 2009 at 07:01 PM Carsanova (New Delhi)

Drive it for a while. You'll see a marked difference, for the better, in how the 1st and 2nd gears rev freely after about 2000 km on the odometer.

i want what is bad in lenea emotion pk petrol like slow in 1 and 2 nd gair why and up to what becouse i will drive this car mostlly on villege road with 10 to 40 km ph daillyy onllyy max 30 km so what is ur suseetion for such slow and tuff road driving with petrol linea car

  39. on 22 Sep, 2009 at 10:24 AM Carsanova (New Delhi)

If you're going to be driving on village roads, speeds ranging from 10 to 40 kmph, I doubt whether any car will give you good fuel efficiency. The ground clearance of Linea will be an issue on these kind of roads. Why don't you consider an Indica Vista with the Quadrajet diesel engine. Tata gaurantees buyback at 60% of original value after 3 years.

hi Vishy, the Fiesta is a great car.Drives really well, responsive engine,(better than the Linea's) and the price is great too.But it looks dated, both from the inside and outside. The ride comfort too is nowhere near that of the Linea;that secure feeling is just not there.Linea is easy to drive in city traffic, but turning radius is more than the Fiesta.link of my car http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-drives-initial-ownership-reports/62490-vocal-white-linea-transformation-chronicles.html

Hi Arun, I can't really say if the active model is gonna be available in csd.Only Emotion and Emotion pack is available now.Wrt the turning radius; tight U turns do require the 3 point turn method.Normal city driving poses no problems, and driving to the hills in the Linea is a thrill. She holds her line through the corners, although the thick A pillar does obstruct round the bends. But this is the case with all cab forward design cars eg. the Jazz, and even the City.

  46. on 26 Sep, 2009 at 07:17 AM Sumant (Amritsar)

    Hi arun ,
I went thru ur comments. It's really exhaustive. I myself went to a Tata Showroom in Amritsar. The car is really excellent. The only thing which irritated me was the pathetic response from the dealer and his salesmen. My only worry is therefore the availability of spares and the after sales service. Any comments ?

Hi Vilas, I don't know what you're talking about! Is this feedback from the owners or just from regular people who don't own the car?

  49. on 04 Oct, 2009 at 08:24 PM Nitya Jacob

    Hi
I have a Palio 1.2 ELX that's nearly 7 years old, so I guess its the same as many others on this page. The car is fun to drive and all that, but a nightmare to fix. Fiat's own service network collapsed, and it was lousy while it lasted. Now it is no better even though Fiat is piggy-backing on Tata. My local mechanic has finally cracked the spares question and is better at fixing the car than taking it to a company dealer. Wish Fiat would take back its service network and improve after sales.

  50. on 04 Oct, 2009 at 11:47 PM Mahesh

I took a test drive of the Linea emotion diesel. Found the handling to be good with a responsive steering. The suspension ensured a bump free ride on rough roads. I was bowled over by the styling, cabin space and interiors. The features are quite thoughtful and make driving a pleasure. The only thing amiss, was the engine noise. I could hear the diesel engine noise inside the cabin and would have preferred a more silent ride. After sales and spares are issues that are not yet resolved.

    A small update ..
my LINEA 1.3 MJD odometer just showed 6000KM mark ... did 3 long drives (approx 730 ~ 800 KM in single day) n believe me guys she's doing better n better each time ..... n so my LOVE to her ... i'm a little harsh driver, so floor the pedel every now n then, still she return's her LOVE on me (13.7 KMPL in city) n on my all 3 long drives, she returned 19.3/L (once 18.7/L @ 140 KMPH on Mumbai Pune Expressway).
Also i managed to streatched her legs to max @ 170 KMPH on (cont..1

  52. on 05 Oct, 2009 at 05:58 PM Rahul Mhatre

(cont..1) on Expressway (although it was for just 3~4 min due to traffic).
Now thinking of getting Sun-Film fitted as it would increase the efficiency of already chilling AAC, which would in turn show still better milage figure. The only problem i find with the car is stock ICE Speakers - sound not at all good as car is ...

Rahul, you can replace the speakers. The stock speakers are riveted, not screwed,in place.need to cut the rivets by using a drill machine.Install mdf ring spacers and mount the new speakers on it.make sure to get component speakers for front as well as back. one can also install an amp either by Line Out Converter(this converts High Level Signals to RCA) or by using an amp that accepts High Level Signals.PS:Have you tried adjusting the 7 band EQ?any doubts, post here. Cheers

    Hey,
very very interested in purchasing the Linea Emotion. But I've heard that the rear leg room is extremely less and thus, makes long journerys very very uncomfortable! Please comment on this and give me some guidance.
