I have owned an Alto and then a WagonR till I decided to buy this new sedan from - “Hyundai Verna”.

I have always been very apprehensive about Hyundai cars (or shud I say biased for Japanese cars). When I decided to upgrade to a sedan, I had the Aveo in my mind, for its pure majestic build and looks. Since I was upgrading too soon to sedan (third car in three years), I had to be very careful in choosing the car as I plan not to change for next 5 years.....

I test drove Indigo(Diesel), Aveo, Fiesta, City and Verna (in that order). I must say Aveo has only good looks. The interiors although good has poor quality. The chrome finish on the door handle was shaking when I sat inside a brand new car. It was the same in all other Aveos. GM's quality.....

Fiesta was good. But I felt the steering was very heavy and the back seat was too low and cramped. There are too many Fiestas on road already. Wanted something new....

The most appreciated Honda City ZX Exi was tested next. It surely has an "Upmarket style". But it is way too expensive for a mid segment. The Exi model comes with nothing. No music system, No speakers, no height adjustable seats, no tinted glasses, no keyless entry. The power on the car was not great for highway drives. I had to press the accelerator to the floor on lower gears to get past city buses with four people on board....

Now, the Verna Xi.... It was love at first sight for me, my wife and my friend. We fell in love instantly with the looks of the car. The car looks ordinary from the front. But looks great from the side (egg shell shape) and from the rear. A definite score over the Aveo and City. Fiesta looks equally good from the rear and the side. The interiors are cool and roomy. The wood finish on the Xi & XXi models are attractive. The dashboard is not very exciting, though. It looks decent. The information console is good with nice speedometer and tachometer and the digital display of Odo, door open sign, seat belt warning etc… (similar to most other cars in the segment). The rear leg room is excellent, second only to the Honda city.

Now the drive.... the diesel was mind blowing (way too expensive for me as it is not equipped well). The petrol was very refined. Very silent inside the cabin. Did reasonably well with 5 people on board and AC on in Bangalore city. Guess, would do well on highways too. The feedback from the various auto magazines has been average. I think that does not matter for common man as I feel the common man has different requirements....

The Xi and XXi comes with lot of features at the price. It has height adjustable driver seats, height adjustable seat belts, music system (XXi only), speakers, electrically adjustable RVM, Alloy wheels (XXi) and automatic climate control (XXi). It is a real steal at 7.35 lacs (Xi) and 8.01 lacs (XXi)

Practically..... I have been using Verna Xi for last 15 days. For a person who has been driving WagonR, it feels definitely very good in a bigger car like Verna. However, there are few things which I feel Hyundai should have looked into. The initial pickup is not good at all, head lights are not the brightest. The fuel efficiency is not great either. Otherwise, it is excellent. Looks great on the road, handles the rough roads smoothly, accomodates 5 people without any cramps, AC is decent, driving position is the best, road clearance is superb, ground clearance is good, seats are comfortable, easily reachable controls, excellent styling.....

Overall, with a little compromise on fuel efficiency, it is a fantastic car.

The review is useful for me, as i was not in a position whether to go for Honda City or for Verna

  5. on 12 Sep, 2007 at 05:47 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

I have been using Verna for almost a year now (10 months to be precise). I have done both highway (40%) and city (60%). I am getting around 11 kmpl in city and around 14 kmpl on highway with AC (60% of the times). As I mentioned earlier, Verna is not a very fuel efficient car. However, for the price what you pay, you get a decent car. In fact, none of the C segment cars are perfect except for the Honda City Vtec. But it is way too expensive.....

This review is pre-SX4. How do u rate SX4-VXi vs Verna-Xi

  8. on 07 Feb, 2008 at 09:33 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

I also wanted to own the SX4 as I knew that Maruti would phase out Baleno. But when I bought the Verna the launch date of SX4 was not announced. I could not wait. To answer your question - "SX4 is more an SUV. The back seat comfort is the worse among all the cars in the segment. Three people cannot be accomodated in the rear seat. It is entirely built on Swift platform and the quality of the interiors are very poor. I now feel it was blessing in disguise for me. I am happy I bought Verna.

  9. on 22 Feb, 2008 at 07:46 PM Wewe

Thank you Mr Murali. I was torn between the Verna and the SX4. But your review is a piece of art. Could you please let men know the average maintenance cost over the past 12 months

  10. on 22 Feb, 2008 at 11:08 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Hi Wewe, there has been no maintenance cost till now. But the car is still under warranty and I have used up the free service coupons (first three services are free). Hopefully, there would not be much maintenance going forward too. On a separate note, "Maruti has the best service backup, not just in terms of coverage but also in terms of customer service. Hyundai needs to catch up quite a distance to be on par with Maruti.

  11. on 23 Feb, 2008 at 10:39 AM Gaurav Bhardwaj (New Delhi)

    HI Murli

i would like to share one thing with u regarding this service network issue I am a customer of Hyundai India Motors and Maruti from almost last five years and can bet on that no company can get you service better than Hyundai. There are I accept less service station of Hyundai than that of maruti but what than the Hyundai service is way par high than Maruti. And at Hyundai Customer is Treated like God and at Maruti A customer is treated like a DOG.

Well,I have a Maruti also. I have had two Maruti cars earlier. I have posted the comment based on my experiences with the dealers. Probably, I might have found the Hyundai dealer to be below average (factor in subjectivity). I had switched over to another dealer in between. Although, I must mention that Hyundai promptly responded to my complaint and assured me of good service in future. At the end of the day what matters is good service. With limited choice of dealers, one needs to live with it

Oh! yes..... Is it the same with you? I thought that was only with my car.... please let me know if you have found out the actual reason. If this is the case with other Verna cars also, please let us know. We can register an official complaint with Hyundai.

hi congrats for ur new car i am also planning to purchase verna (p) but i have listen it from many people that verna brakes are not very good or as good as sx4 i am bit confused please help me and give unbaised answer i am planning to purchase the highest petrol model and tell me about pickup and handling

  18. on 12 Apr, 2008 at 10:51 AM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Mohit, Verna is a good car. I would suggest you buy the Xi model instead of XXi. I do not see much value in Automatic climate control. You can buy Xi and upgrade by having alloy wheels. Verna's braking is not the best, but would be good with ABS. I wud suggest you go with Xi with ABS. Pickup and torque are ordinary but mileage & comforts is good. Every car has its own pluses & minuses. Now the ball is in your court!! Gud Luk

Hi Murali, I am also from Bangalore. Toggling between BSK and E-City. Occassionaly drives out of station. I have a driver. Since I have chronic back-ache, I was advised wagon-R, which after 4 years of use, wants to replace. Whether City or Verna would be good for me. Pls mentin about the model with add-on's like ABS, Alloy wheels etc. Thanks

hi plz tell me abt verna performance....

  23. on 14 May, 2008 at 10:05 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Mr. Subbu, Anil, if you read my comment you wud notice that City is a better car than Verna although City is very expensive. I would rate Verna's performance second only to City. Verna has good smooth ride, comfortable seating and good service back up. It is frugal too. If you people have budget for City, you can go for it. Mr. Subbu, if you have budget you should go for City Vtec. It comes with ABS and Airbags as std. equipment. City's back seat comfort wud be ideal for people with back pain.

Mr.Murali, thanks for your inputs. I looked at "caompare cars" Verna XXi, City VTec, City VTec+ and SX4 ZXi. Only SX4 and VTec+ both provides ABS & Airbags. VTec+ price is 9.1 and SX$ is 7.36. Only diff is VTec+ provides leather seats. Mileage is better in VTec+ since is the CC is < than that of SX4.
How about your opinion on SX4? Thanks in advance

  26. on 15 May, 2008 at 10:34 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Mr. Subbu, SX4 has the most uncomfortable back seat in this segment. Also it is the most cramped at the back. It cannot accomodate three people. Suzuki and Honda are miles apart in terms of quality, Honda being closer to perfect quality. I leave the decision to you :) Happy driving!!

  27. on 16 May, 2008 at 02:20 PM Subbu

Thanks Murali. Then I think I should go for Honda, based on comfort, mileage, quality etc. Pls let us stay in touch

Murali - You need to maintain a blog ! Awesome review & consitent replies even after 10 months! Any idea of how good is the Verna Diesel? I do around 1000 kms per month. Would you reccomend the CRDi? I am not sure I would be able to find this page to look at your reply - Hence would appreciate if you replied at mm_venkatesh@hotmail.com - Cheers dude

Guys Iam about to buy verna xi, One of my friend said that maintainance of verna beyond 30000km is going to be huge, is it true? can anyone throw some light on this!

  30. on 25 May, 2008 at 06:24 PM Anish Mandal

    Hi Murali,
I am planning to buy Verna VGT CRDi ABS. This will be my first car. My usage will be around 1000km/month within city ( Bangalore ). I am planning to go out-station with the car occasionally. Would you recommend this car? Also, I have heard maintenance on diesel car is very huge in the long run. Is that true?

  31. on 25 May, 2008 at 09:47 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Verna diesel has awesome power, little more than what one would require. It really feels great when you drive a Verna diesel. However, it has got some turbo lag. It should not be a major hitch, though.

These days diesel technology has evolved so much that one need not worry about maintenance cost. Often, people get misguided when they are advised that one needs to do a minimum of 2000+ kms to justify a diesel car. That was true then, when the maintenance on diesel cars were on the higher s

  32. on 25 May, 2008 at 09:50 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

That was true then, when the maintenance on diesel cars were on the higher side. Today's technology is much advanced, so..... if you have the budget you might go in for a Verna diesel.
One word of caution, Verna (diesel/petrol) is not stable at high speeds when you compare with an SX4 or a Fiesta and Aveo.

    HI,
Murli u have any idea on chevrolet optra SRV, how do u rate this car against city and verna

  34. on 04 Jun, 2008 at 03:05 PM Pinaki Guin (Thane)

Hi Murli have you ever compared chevrolet optra SRV against city and verna. do let me know howz the car

  35. on 06 Jun, 2008 at 06:45 AM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Hi Pinaki, to be honest I have not driven SRV. But what I have seen, it looks a very good sports kinda car but the reviews say that its performance is not upto the mark and also I found the gearshift very notchy just like Aveo. I also felt its way too expensive (9 lacs) for a hatchback. This is my personal opinion, though.

  36. on 06 Jun, 2008 at 04:23 PM Nandkumar.Naik (Trivandrum)

hi murali tell me which one i opt for verna of city...

  37. on 09 Jun, 2008 at 04:23 PM Subbu

Hi Murali, The 'compare cars' option says, the mileage for "Hyundai Verna VGT CRDi SX ABS" is 13.8 and for "Hyundai Verna Xi/XXi" is 10.8.

Please share with us, if you are aware, the reason for such a 3km difference. If the claim is genuine, the I would go for "Hyundai Verna VGT CRDi SX ABS". Please let me know your views

  38. on 11 Jun, 2008 at 12:09 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Verna VGT is diesel and Verna Xi/XXi is petrol. The difference is obvious.

    Hi Murali,
Your views on Logan and New version of Maruti Swift please..

  40. on 03 Jul, 2008 at 09:18 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Subbu, I am not a qualified car expert. However.... Logan is a value for money car. It has excellent dynamics. The road grip is best in the segment, superlative space and a very frugal engine. Only disappointment is the interiors. They look very ordinary and cheap quality. In today's rising fuel prices, it makes a good buy, though.

  41. on 03 Jul, 2008 at 09:21 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

I presume you are referring to Swift Dzire. It is nothing but the Swift with a butt, for me. Personally, it looks awkward from the side and the back. Performance-wise it is good in both petrol and diesel backed with Maruti service. The space constraint is the concern in both Swift and SX4.

  42. on 04 Jul, 2008 at 12:27 PM Subbu

Thanks Murali. Your inputs are really valid and matured than the qualified experts. I had a drive in Logan 10 days back from New Aiport to home. The drive was very smooth. The comfort of space within the cab is good even for 6 footers. I did not check much onthe interiors. Aslo I heard Diesel version gives 14-15 Km mileage, which is good. I am thinking of Logan in place of City in terms of price, fuel efficiency. Only issue is Post sale service. We need to check on that.

  43. on 14 Jul, 2008 at 10:21 AM Shankar Cas

Hi Murali, Thanks for sharing your Verna experience and your valuable inputs for forum visitors' questions. Do you have any idea abt. Logan? As of now, I have decided to buy verna Xi but Logan is in my list. I am concerned about body of logan, performance and service levels.

    Can you please suggest?

    Regards
    Shankar

  44. on 15 Jul, 2008 at 07:54 PM Revati Raman

can anyone tell which one to choose:accent or verna(petrol)

  45. on 17 Jul, 2008 at 08:18 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Mr. Shankar, I have mentioned about Logan in my comment on 3rd July, please refer.
Revati - Accent will phased out sooner or later. It has lived its life. I would suggest, between the two, Verna.

  46. on 20 Jul, 2008 at 04:52 PM Udayadittya Shome (Ghaziabad)

I test-drove Logan GLS, Fiesta SXi, SX4 ZXI and Verna CRDi in the last two days. Judging by the initial reviews, I had pinned my hopes on Logan, so the experience was a huge let-down. It is a value-for-money car, but only if you're running a taxi-service or being driven around. The driving pleasure is non-existent. Awful turn-indicator, stiff gear-shift, tacky interiors - a big let-down overall. Found Verna to be the best among these. Waiting to test-drive the petrol 1.6 DXi. Uday, Indirapuram.

Hi Murali. I truly appreciate this sense of hard core explanation pure on experience. I am planning to go ahead with Verna CRDI. But in doubt with SX4 and Fiesta (diesel). Learnt about the Verna moving to left once you let go of steering and verna going out of control on high speeds. Pls advice, thus which one to go for in the long run ? pls reply to me on manas.shrivastava@citi.com (infact i would request all to pour in their views on my email)

    Hi Murali,
Am planning to buy mid segment car. But i am confused between Verna (Xi/XXi) and Honda City. I personally like Verna but i have heard that balancing of car is not upto the mark on highway when you cross speed of 100. Can u pls share your experience - Harshil Rajani (Rajkot)

  54. on 26 Aug, 2008 at 02:58 PM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Hi, I am answering both the questions above... Pradip, ABS definitely makes breaking assuring and that much more safer. Since you have mentioned that you drive mostly on highways, I would suggest you go with Verna with ABS. W.r.t Verna vs. City I would advise Verna at this point in time since current City is being phased out to launch a new model. However, if you can wait for couple of months, then City is the car to buy. W.r.t. to stability, Verna is unstable 120 onwards, very stable otherwise

  55. on 28 Aug, 2008 at 05:48 PM Machi_R

Iam planning to upgrade from Alto to Mid segment car. I have checked AVEO, VERNA & City. Iam convinced with Aveo for its price, looks and features not very sure about the resale price if I have to change after about 3 years, next choice is Verna/City What do you suggest?

Murali, You have floored me with your excellent reviews and informative replies.

One quicky: Verna CRDI SX ABS or All New Honda City MT? Any idea abt the mileage of new city?

    Your Fan,
    Viju (Bangalore)

  60. on 22 Nov, 2008 at 07:56 AM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

Viju, I would definitely go in for Verna CRDI for its sheer power, pricing and comfort. The New City is yet to test waters. But being Honda, I would assume it would be around 12-15 (avg. City and Highway conditions). But everything else apart, I am not sure how to drive the new City in our Indian roads? What with its low ground clearance. Need to wait for feedback. Good luck.

  61. on 12 Dec, 2008 at 04:35 PM Anand.Krishnan04

    Murli,

I can see you are well informed and very active on this space specially with your honest n blunt replies. I too, am a proud owner of a VERNA. For starters, the VERNA beats the SX4 hands down when it comes to drag race. My bro in law has an SX4 and he agrees the handling of the VERNA is far superior. Its a big car with a small car feel. However, I think the car pulls up towards the left when u leave the steering wheel. Is this an issue wid everyone?

  62. on 13 Dec, 2008 at 11:08 AM Murali Keshav (Bangalore)

You are right. I too had this problem. But, I left no stone unturned and saw that the dealer rectify this problem. He could not give any convincing reason for the problem. However, it has been rectified now. Its been 2 yrs now, I am enjoying my drives thoroughly. I am sure, you can also get it rectified. If the dealer doesn't respond positively, write to Hyundai directly. It will get you some response. They better do, in these tough times.
