Hi folks

I have been a regular visitor to this website and got great help in choosing my car.

I got my lovely i20 delivered in May. This is a review of the car after completion of 1500 Km.

The car has got everything you can want from a car(Space, ABS, 6 airbags, Steering mounted audio contorls, etc etc etc). Its will and already has created a separate market for itself. The interiors are class apart. The steering is also really smooth. It has got the space, looks, comfort, luxury. The AC of the car is really amazing for this segment.

I also read some comments on the website stating the car is underpowered and has a pulling problem. I would only like to state, that pulling problem is only if you are a bad driver. The car is got adequate power. I have driven the same from Mumbai to Shirdi with 4 people, luggage and AC on and didnt find any problem even while driving up the Kasara ghats. The journey was very comfortable for all the passengers even at the rear.

I aggree it cannot be a race machine and maybe a 1400 cc larger engine will be a very good option for people who would not mind compromising on mileage for power. But for mileage concious people like me (mostly city driving) this is a great package of power & class. Initiallly (first 1000km) I used to get mileage of around 11KM in city with AC. But after which it has improved and currently am getting around 12km and expecting to improve to around 13 to 14Km in city with 75% AC after 2nd service. My friend who owns an i20 had a similar experience and now after the 2nd service is getting 13-14KM in the city. I think it is pretty neat for a car which offers good luxury and driving pleasure.  The only con I feel is lack of a diesel engine and maybe its around 25K costlier.

To conclude I would say I had done a lot of research (test drove the swift which I think was the closest competitor) before buying this car and trust me could not find any car in its class offering such features and quality for around 6 lakh price tag. On the maintainence front, I am rest assured as this is my 3rd Hyundai car and only thing I spent on maintainence of previous 2 cars is a pretty reasonable AMC fee that I pay once a year to Hyundai my car is completly taken care off(servicing, oil change, etc) for the whole year without any hassels.

Any comments and clarifications are welcome from anyone who is confused on buying a car in this segment and would need any help or clarification.

I am thinking of buying i20 magna, i have 2 questions, is the leg space sufficient for people who are lile 6 feet and how about ground clearance? Appreciate your feedback

  2. on 14 Jul, 2009 at 05:09 PM Anand K

How do you compare this car with Punto Emotion-Petrol/Diesel?

  3. on 16 Jul, 2009 at 01:14 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi Mr Alok

I am 5.10 myself and i am extremly comfortable in this car. The leg space is adequate. Also this is the biggest car in its class. Diff to get any other car in this class with better leg space. Also personally i dont feel it has low ground clearance. Inspite of driving on rough bumpy roads in Mumbai I didnt find any issue as yet.

    Dear Anand

I have not driven the punto. But what I know about is the mileage of 1.4 petrol is only around 9kml in city and 12 highway @zigwheels. I think thats where fiat is always lacking and this could be a big hurdle against this car. Also i have owned a Tata vehicle earlier and the service centres do not match to Hyundai at all. Hyundai after sales is far far better than Tata. 1.2L car is grossly underpowered (1172cc, 67bhp) compared to the 1140kg weight of this car. Considering all this

  5. on 16 Jul, 2009 at 03:28 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

I will go with i20 rather than punto.

    Hi Chirag

I completly aggree to your commments. This one is a great car from the Hyundai stable. I also second your comments on the servicing front. Hyundai gives real good quality service at reasonable rates. I am also finalizing on buying the i20 magna version. I need help on the rear ac cooling of the car. whats your take on that

nice one bro, as it really gets me closer to get this car for my wife and me (although the first car and lot of research being put into the car details and others aspects, but we (me and my wife) should admit we were flattered with the first glimpse of this car....indeed this car is well placed in this segment to at least give tight competition to cars above one segment.

altogether a great package in 6 lakhs.

    cheers,
    VJ

Nice to read and know the facts for i20, i just took test drive of punto diesel and i20 petrol, ofcourse if you talk about power i felt Punto better, but if you look at the leg space, in Punto not sure where all space goes but i20 has a good space, nice power, i have almost fixed up on i20, just one concern is how about ground clearance? any comment on it?

  10. on 31 Jul, 2009 at 03:09 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Dear Anish

I have a petrol i20 asta. I did not try the diesel version of i20 or the punto. What I know is swift is a good diesel option. i20 with its 1.4 crdi is gr8 powerfull engine with lots of features and class. But again it is pricey. If you can manage those extra few thousands then i20 will be the most suitaible.

  11. on 31 Jul, 2009 at 03:13 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi Nil

I am not too sure on Punto. But I never had it in my options list as even after the Tata-fiat tie up the service has not at all improved and the problem of spares still exists. Also Tata service is no match to Hyundai. I choose on the Hyundai as it is peace of mind in terms of after sales. I can say this from my past ex of owning 2 Hyundai cars. Also regarding ground clearance I havent faced any issues in Mumbai. The base of the car has not touched any speed breaker or bump as yet.

Hi, I have also booked i20 Asta(o) and I am really excited about it. It should be here in a week's time. I was initially confuses between i20 and Jazz but after comparisons and reding the reviews I decided to go with i20 and I think I have made the right choice. Jazz is way too overpriced and it does not offer anything which the i20 does not whereas i20 is way more feature rich compared to Jazz. Jazz will be Honda's first car to fail in India in my opinion.

How is I20 Automatic Asta? What is the mileage of the automatic version of I20 Asta?

  14. on 24 Aug, 2009 at 01:32 AM Dipak Panda (Bhubaneswar)

Hi, ur review is very inspiring, finally I m going to own an I20. I know its feature rich but not sure about pickup.I m confused between Magna and asta model. Do u think ABS is necessary for i20.

  15. on 24 Aug, 2009 at 12:21 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi Anirudh

Congrats on choosing the i20. I feel this is the most VFM car in its class. You cannot ask for more. I suppose you must have recd the delivery and must be enjoying your beauty. Please share your experience.

  16. on 24 Aug, 2009 at 12:57 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi Abhishek

i20 asta comes with a 1.4L engine. mine is a manual version 1.2L asta. I have not driven the auto version. But it is a 1.4 hence i feel it should have good power. No clue on the mileage.

  17. on 24 Aug, 2009 at 01:17 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi

i20 has adequate power and good pick up. It cannot be a race machine but it is a good overall drive with excellent quality and features & reasonable fuel economy. Overall it makes a great package. ABS is a good to have feature in the car as it provides you with additional safety. Also Asta and magna have around 85k diff but lots of additional features like Airbags, ABS, Auto climate control AC, Alloys, rear wiper, Audio player with USB. The additions justify the cost. If you can

  18. on 24 Aug, 2009 at 01:18 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

shell out the extra bucks for the asta just go for it.

Dear All (Update on completion of 3000 Km)

I just managed to clock 3000km in my lovely car. The avg has improved and moved to around 13KMPL. I am now waiting for the second service which will be around late Oct and expecting the Mileage to be around 14-15. I am overall very happy with my beauty.I am loving every moment of this car. a few of my relatives and friends sat in the car and just fell flat with the kinda features its got. Couple zeroed on this car and booked it. this i think

  21. on 26 Aug, 2009 at 03:22 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

itself is an achievement. i have got a complete overall package in this car which would have been very difficult, getting in any other car around the 6 Lac range.

  22. on 06 Sep, 2009 at 02:54 PM Kalpesh

Hi Chirag, I guess you are totally in love with your car, which is great. I totally love i20 for its looks, features and quaity. I am Ok with it being underpowered. I have a concern though - costly spare parts and ground clearance. I have a family of 5 adults so i am worried about the power with 5 people sitting in and bumping speed breakers/pot holes. I have shortlisted Dzire and i20. Both have its own +/- and i think performance/VFM money wise Dzire it better.. but can't ignore i20. Comments?

  23. on 06 Sep, 2009 at 02:57 PM Kalpesh

I know Dzire and i20 belongs to different segment but i am comparing from cost and cabin space point only.

    hi
nice to see good reviews, but what abt the steering feedback?? i have done the test drive, and i feel the steering a bit loose/figety... how is it on speeds at 80-90? any comments on that?
    PRK

  25. on 06 Oct, 2009 at 12:51 PM Mitesh Patel (Mumbai)

    Hi PRK

the steering is butter smooth. Its infact a blessing on city roads. Also need not worry about the stability. The car is extremly stable. i have till now driven till 120km. really gr8 car

  26. on 06 Oct, 2009 at 01:02 PM Mitesh Patel (Mumbai)

    Hi Kalpesh

Yes you are right. the built qaulity, features, etc are the best. the perfomance is amazing, good FE. Overall a great package. Regarding ground clearance, havent faced any issues till date in mumbai bumpy roads. Also the spares are not too costly. Its pretty reasonable. Also due to the build quality and overall fit and finish you will find good realiability and do not be bothered about spares.

    Hi Chirag,

i am also planning to buy i20 Asta 1.2L. But I am confused after reading some reviews, that this car is too underpowered. Can you please shed some light on this, that will help me to finalize this car.

    Thanks
    Parveen

  30. on 03 Nov, 2009 at 04:29 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi Nitin & Partha

2nd serivce done around a week back. I have driven around 300 Km in a weeks time after the 2nd service. mileage is somewhat around 14. would be able to give the exact picture after a week. but other people around me with this car are getting around 13-15 in Mumbai suburban traffic conditions. Highway avg is around 18-19.

  31. on 03 Nov, 2009 at 04:49 PM Chirag (Mumbai)

    Hi Parveen

I too own a 1.2 asta. I did not feel at all that the car is less powered. I didnt face any pulling problem. I have driven up the ghats with 4 people and some luggage. It went up pretty smoothly. you can compare it in terms of power to any hatch or premium hatch in its class. It does not lack in any aspect. Yes it cannot be a powerhouse, but it has sufficient power and you wont see any swifts or ritzs beating the i20 easily on highways.
