I took a test drive today morning and i was so impressed that I gave the booking amount for the 1.3L multijet, emotion pack, the top end car, immediately. It is so amazing, that the car is really a great value for money. Airbag, Blue&me, auto climate control, alloys, superb interiors, excellent drive comfort, steering mounted audio controls and that too for 6.7 on the road. I was amazed when the car was going at 20km/hr in the 5th gear without any problem. The car doesn't require frequent gear shift. It offers a great driving comfort. The car offers a good pick up. It is very comfortable to sit inside. The engine is already proven and the showroom guy told me that it requires oil change only 30000km. Tried the blue and me. It is good. No cabin noise. AC is powerful. Music system is really good with the 6 speakers. I had test driven most of the cars in its class, except i20 and Honda Jazz. I was looking only for the diesel cars. Driving is effortless. Cannot compare with any other car in the class I have driven. It is a Linea without boot, as simple as that. I never expected this car to be so awesome.

The best part is that you won't get a car with these features at this price. Automatic climate control, Airbags, Alloy wheels, Blue&Me etc.. It's a car that provides maximum safety in its class. I don't think there are much cars available with the same features and options for the price. I have gone through the Petrol and Diesel Cars and I found out the following:

Petrol: It provides more features than the Honda Jazz, Ford Fusion Plus Petrol and Skoda Fabia Elegance 1.2 MPI for a lesser price. I compared the GrandePunto top version with the top most versions of other cars in its class. Grande Punto is the least priced car with more features. The car that catch up with it is the i20. i20 has more width. But I'm completely not aware of the riding comfort and other features. But I would go for the GrandePunto. The top model GrandePunto comes 5.77 ex-showroom. The price difference between top version Hyundai i20 and the GrandePunto is about 40,000 and i20 has comes with curtain airbags. The i20 that comes with the features of the GrandePunto EmotionPack come at around 10,000 more than the GrandePunto, but i20 has more interior space than the GrandePunto. What I could find is the i20 engine is less powerful than that of the GrandePunto. The GrandePunto 1.4 engine has a power of 90ps@6000. The i20 comes with an 80ps@5200 engine. The Honda Jazz also comes with 90ps@6200 engine. The Skoda Fabia comes with 70ps@5200 engine, which clearly underpowered and that too for that price. The Ford Fusion Petrol plus has better powered engine at 110ps@6500. The GrandePunto is more powerful and costs lesser than the competitors in its class, except the Ford Fusion Petrol Plus for the matter of engine power. But the ForFusion Petrol Plus doesn't have many of the GrandePunto features and is priced almost 1,00,000 above the GrandePunto. The Honda Jazz doesn't have auto climate control, alloys for the top model and you have to shell out more than 2,00,000(On the road) out of your pocket for less features and for the equally powered engine.   Don't ask me about the driving comfort. I haven't test driven a Jazz. Skoda Fabia is clearly overpriced like the Jazz. Forget about the Jazz and Fabia. Here is the comparison of top version Fiat GrandePunto  with other top version Petrol hatchbacks in its class: http://www.carwale.com/research/comparecars/carcomparison.aspx?car1=1565&car2=1550&car3=1320&car4=1300

Diesel: Punto clearly is the winner here. The top end diesel version comes for 6.11 exshowroom price Delhi. For me in Trivandrum comes at 6.18 lakhs. It's the car that I took the Test Drive. The cars that comes in the class are Ford Fusion Diesel Plus, Skoda Fabia Elegante 1.4 TDi. Here also I'm talking about the top version of these cars which comes fully loaded. For the Ford Fusion you have to give 1,00,000 more and less features. Why go for it??? Skoda Fabia has the features loaded in it, but the price factor comes into play and the interior space is better in GrandePunto as I felt. GrandePunto offers a car with high safety, comfort, convenience and fully loaded at 1,50,000 less than the Fabia. The GrandePunto engine is 76ps@4000 which is bit more than the Ford Fusion Diesel plus which comes at 68ps@4000 and more than the Skoda Fabia TDi engine which comes at about 69sp@4000. You pay less and you get better power. The Engine noice so quiet that you will not hear the noice even at high speed(I didnt drive at extreme high speeds, just talking about 80-100km/hr). The car has an amazing pickup. It's so smooth to Drive. The automatic climate control is too awesome. It cools the cabin quickly. The Getz engine far more powerful than the GrandePunto but it doesnt have any good features. Most of the features are absent in the Getz compared to the GrandePunto. Here is the comparison of top version Fiat GrandePunto  with other top version Diesel hatchbacks in its class: http://www.carwale.com/research/comparecars/compareFeatures.aspx?car1=1569&car2=1299&car3=1321&car4=1273

The interior space and the legroom is much lesser than Indica Vista but more than the Swift. Interior space is at par with Getz, Fabia and Fusion and for me it's bit more than the above said cars, except Indica Vista. The comfort and convenience level is simply awesome and the automatic climate control cools fast.

The only thing I was not much satisfied with is the height at the back seat. A six footer might find it difficult while going through the Indian roads The interior finish is really awesome. The reverse lamp is placed at the bottom<

    Anish,

I liked your review but, thought of asking you which part of the country do you live in as the dealers are not entertaining any bookings before 25th of June in Delhi NCR.

Don't take me wrong as I was just curious to know which part of the country's Fiat dealers are accepting bookings on the very next day of the GP launch.

    Regards......

    Hey no issues....

I'm in Trivandrum...booked at Kulathunkal Motors.... I had already booked a Vista and I changed it to Punto... And still I was the 7th person to book the car... Booking already started yesterday... regards

Excellent and comprehensive review. How long is waiting period? May be you will get parking sensors installed. I hope Hyundai is keeping eyes open and launch i20 diesel very soon as well as i20 with 1.4 L engine as an option. Thank you.

    @Amit...

Today the showroom guys had told me that a number of cars are in Transit.... They said it would take anywhere between 5-10 days... But the the color choice is limited as there are only 3 red and 1 silver emotion pack... Amit I don't thinks they will install sensors... But is damn good to drive :)

    regards.....

REVERSE GEAR Lamps NOT Visible. Its an important feature, car makers make compromise on. Only 1 side Reverse gear lamp that too, very low placed (in bumper, where it can easily break down) makes car risky. I had practicle accident as 1st lot IKONs also had this drawback. PUNTO has big tail lamp cluster, Reverse gear lamp can be fitted there.

Very Good review. I also found the reverse gear to be little low and surprised to see it only on one side. But I guess, its not a very big factor anyways. I drove the car, the ride, suspension is unmatched and betters some of the sedans in > 10 lacs range. Exterior looks, "killer". Internal features, good. At 6,53,000 on road in Mumbai, its a much better deal than Fabia and Jazz. Its time, indian buyers become mature and stop taking bullying from Honda, which has clearly overpriced Jazz by 1.5la

Hi Anish, Thnx for great review; it will surely help people to take buying decisions. Well, I have shortlisted only 2 cars for my needs & budgets. These are Maruti Swift Vxi & Fiat GP 1.4 Dynamic.
Can u & others help in taking the right decison. Only concern is FE & Service of Fiat Punto, I stay in Delhi.

    Rgds/Alok

    @ Alok Srivastava....

    Hi Alok...

Here is the comparison between the Fiat GP1.4 Dynamic and the Swift Vxi...

Alok both the cars have equally powered engines.. The riding comfort is better for the Punto...

If you need comparitively better interior space(not that better), longer hatch, better driving comfort go for Punto.

Alok since you are giving 4.74 ex showroom, why cant u think abt the vista diesel, it is a good car with better F.E. It's diesel that u get for the price of the P

  11. on 20 Jun, 2009 at 06:06 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

    @Alok

Vista the best interior space, comes with the Fiat Engine at the price of the cars u short listed. jst u have to compromise the interior finish, it's worth that money.

Swift has better riding comfort than the Vista. But Punto has bit more edge than Swift. Punto is a new car, Swift bit old. I have driven a Swift. It is good car to drive. But Alok the new Vista is also good. I was gng 4 it and den the Punto was launched. It has the Fiat Engin, the same as in GP Diesel and Swift Diesel

  12. on 20 Jun, 2009 at 06:15 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

    @Alok..

The swift provides an ABS at that price... ABS indeed is a safety feature... Now in short it comes like below:

Fiat GP: Good ride comfort, comparitively better interior space, new design, tilt steering, larger hatch than swift and vista.

    Swift: Good ride comfort, ABS.

both the cars have good F.E about 14-16 highway. Since both are almost equal better take a TD and then decide. About Service, I agree Maruti is better, but then u r not going for the Service everyday right? :)

  13. on 20 Jun, 2009 at 11:38 PM Alok Srivastava (Noida)

Hi Anish, thnx a lot. I dont want diesel engine & Indica at all . I wud only 4 petrol thats for sure.
Now, 1.4 dynamic exSR is 4.66.. And Swift Vxi..4.39 both w/o ABS.
Pls tell me, the overall effect on FE of 1.4 dynamic punto over swift vxi, as punto is 1.) 140kg heavier GP; 2.) Is 100cc more than swift; 3.) but having better Grnd clearance 4.) May be better aerodynamics.
BTW, how much diff 1.4 L & 1.3 (both petrol) will make on power/performance/pickup.

FE & POWER is what I want 2 compa

ALOK, I think you drive below 3000 Km/month, Diesel makes sense only 4 drives more than 3000 Km/Month. For small drives, Petrol is better. Now if your traffic condition is overcrowded, powerful engine is of no use. Even many features of car turn useless, go for 1.2 68 Bhp GP or Vista. For less crowdy traffic 1.4 GP is best suited. Do read comments on my review (Superb VFM.Grt Pwr even at Low RPM. Good Mileage. But Can you see its Reverse Gear Lamps?) But do mail FIAT on tail lamp issue.

t havw waited for punto before taking my final decision. i have short listed chev uva 1.2 basic ,maruti dzir and fiat 1.2 petrol. as my monthly averge requirement cant be more then1400km and i live in uttarakhand hills.my car will beused by me and my wife anf we both are middle aged. ps suggest which will be better buy. is maintenance still a issue with modern deisel engines. fiat service centre will be about 200 km away from me but tata service centre is hardly 20 km away from my place. atul

  16. on 22 Jun, 2009 at 11:52 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@ Anonymous.... go for the punto diesel if you travel about at least 1000 kilometers a month.. It gives u good driving comfort and very good features..VFM car... Maintenance: the same engine works in swift diesel but has a better tuning and driving comfort.. so no worry about maintenance
Service: Since this car requires less maintenance and oil change only at 30000km dont worry about the service.. It is one in a year service. Go for the punto diesel.. it's damn good..

  17. on 22 Jun, 2009 at 12:01 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

    @Anonymous

The engine maintenance is nothing to worry... This engine has already proved its worth and gone are the days where the diesel engines needed a lots of maintenance... The multijet engine is better than most of the petrol engines.. The engine in the punto is best tuned engine and delivers the best driving comfort... It gives an excellent fuel economy of more than 18-19 km/ltr... So go for the Punto Diesel...

    Hello Aniash,

Its a gr8 review; thanks a lot. I i saw this car in show room; and fell in love with it. I wanted to buy the 1.2 Petrol; ( i stay in bangalore; and my travel is about 1500KM per month ). The only problem i see is; neither the FIAT web site nor the dealers commenting any ting on Mileage of the petrol car and i read this review on zigwheels.com about 1.4 petrol (http://images.zigwheels.com/alfresco/INDT/Reviews/Petrol_20090616_images/grande-punto-comparo-petrol.jpg) and it says th

    @Mailganeshd...

I checked with the showroom guys about the mileage when i went to book the car... I talked with a guy who got training for Punto from FIAT.. Dont expect more than 12-13kmpl in cities and 13-14 and that too under perfect driving conditions and maintenance... Mileage as per my knowledge will be less than Swift Petrol owing to the weight factor.. But I dont think it's as low as told in the image posted above.. I never heard those figure anywhere else... regards :)

  21. on 22 Jun, 2009 at 10:29 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

    @Mailganeshd...

So the mileage wont be that low or high compared with the Swift and as u know the showroom guys can add a bit to the mileage ;).. so somewhere around the 12-14kmpl for city and 13-14 for highway driving depending on the driving and maintenance condns.. and had it not been a FE car it wont be successful internationally right?.. other than the FE factore take a TD and find out how good the car is!.. Fuel efficiency wont be a big factor to be worried about..It wont be that bad

  22. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 12:45 AM Sunny

Hey Anish, its a great review...answers most of my questions on Punto..howevr what nobdy is talkin about is BLUE & ME and the SMART system.is it a standard fitment on all the models or just the higher versions?i havnt got a chance to go for a TD till now!!

  23. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:17 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

    @ Sunny..

Hi.. The blue&me is a feature that is provided in the topmost model: emotionpack..it's not a standard feature. It is developed by FIAT and Microsoft. It gives you two primary functions.1) Steering mounted audio controls, so that u dont have to stretch your hands during driving.2)take your phone calls while u are driving.if ur mobile has blutooth it can be connected to the Blue&me and it can attend the calls thru car speaker, read sms, dwnlod the fonebuk thru the bluetuth

  24. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:27 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Sunny.. The smart system is provided in two versions.. the basic and advanced.. It's not that advanced as in Linea emotion. But it do provide some of the features like the temperature display, service reminder, high speed warning, music track, digital trip meter, bt it doesnt have the mileage indicator like in Linea. The basic system that comes in base models wont have the temp display and the service reminders. These are the differences b/w the Intellismart and Blue&me in top and base models :

  25. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 10:23 AM A Fernandes (Guwahati)

Dear Anish or any other expert, 3 queries. pls(A) Is the audio system in Fiat GP the low-end, medium-end or high-end versions made by Sony, Blaupunkt etc or is it made by/for Fiat AND What are its features. (B)Is boot space of Fiat GP more than Swift,Honda Jazz, I-20 & Vista models. (C) No manufacturer is citing (GC) ground clearance (great in Ford vehicles). Is GC more in Fiat GP compared with Swift, Honda Jazz, 1-20 & Vista. Wtng for yr reply. Regards A Fernandes

  26. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 11:52 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Fernandes: Hi...1)the MUsic System used in the GP is Blaupaunkt. It has 6 speakers: 4doors and 2 tweeters. It's really good one, with volume levels up to 30. It is an integrated one with a USB/iPod port(port inside the glovebox). For the emotion pack variants you have the steering mounted controls. When I went for the TD I checked the music system. It worked very fine for me. I tried full volume. Beyond volume level 28 the clarity is not that good, except that it is awesome player for me

  27. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 12:04 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Fernandes: The boot space in GP is much bigger than that of the Maruti Swift, Indica Vista, and Hyundai i20 but I'm not aware of the boot space of Honda Jazz. But the fact is the GP is longer than the Honda Jazz. Honda Jazz is 3900mm and GP is 3987. Hence what I feel is that GP might have bigger boot space. I haven't seen a Jazz yet. So not sure about it. I don't think the boot space would be less in GP than the Jazz.

  28. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 12:16 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Fernandes:The Ground clearance of the GP is 165mm. The ground clearance is good enough for the large speed brakers on the Indian roads. The GP and Vista has the same ground clearance. The Swift has a ground clearance of 170mm. The Honda Jazz has a ground clearance of 160mm. The i20 at present has a GC of 160mm. The GC of the Punto is sufficient so that you can drive comfortably over the large Indian speed brakers. So I hope you are satisfied with the replies ;).. regards:)

Dear Anish, Congratulation, Very well written upto the point review. I think you have made the best choice among the available option, I have test driven most of popular hatchbacks and I found Fiat Grande Punto is best as overall package VFM. It have the better build quality, good handling, linear torque and above all best looking hatch in country.

    @Rajesh Rasal..

Thank you... I might get the car this week itself.. Had thought of taking the Indica Vista Aura Quadrajet.. Then heard that this car is coming... Waited for it...regards:)

    hi experts,
i'm first time buyer and wanted to keep car for atleast 5years. I'm getting confused with Swift VDI (or) GP Emotion , can you comment on longevity, ease of driving, what could be FE, Service options( i heard TATA Motors provides Service ) is it right ? Anything in specific I need to consider before finalizing ?

Dear Anish, thanks. Realy you read my mind and written my experiences and efforts what exactly i made to select the same GP and booked on the launching day at bangalore. For my luck, the 1.3 multijet emotionpack of my choice color was available and blocked the same. In a two or three day's i will be taking delevery too.
Realy , last 45 day's my run around to all topend hatchback cars showrooms and in one stretch more than any thing with 15"alloy wheels GP wonmyheart

  33. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:20 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@ Vijay...Hi..Vijay both the cars durable and it's proven and you can surely maintain the car for more than 5+years without much tension. Now the deciding factors are narrowed in to: Driving comfort, interior space,boot,F.E,pric. Vijay I have driven both the cars, the swift of my friend's and the GP TD. The GP has a better driving comfort than the swift. It doesn't mean swift is a bad car. I enjoyed driving the Swift. But the GP is better car to drive for sure. I literally enjoyed the TD.

  34. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:28 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay.I don't have any dispute that Swift is a good car. But Punto is better compared to swift in tat matter. 2)Interior Space: the punto has a better interior than the swift, and it's 'bit' more spacious at the back. 3)The GP has indeed a large boot. No doubt abt it. 4) F.E:Vijay both comes wid d same engine, same torque delivery. The GP is is 100+kg heavier than Swift. But the power delivery is better and the tuning is better in GP. So expect almost the same FE with Swift.

  35. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:32 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay the price difference between the two cars are abt 38000. I would the GP is worth it for the riding comfort it gives. It's handling is really awesome. Then comes the service factor. Everyone gives you the same service once you take the Car. I didnt feel any diff with the TATA and Maruti. Take the car for anykind of in-warranty replacement, both of them will show you the same face. In Maruti they have more showrooms within a city so they would be more competitive.

  36. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:35 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay. My brother owns a Safari and he never faced any issues with TATA service. The Punto doesnt need frequent service. One in a year and oil change at30000kms. So once in a while you would visit the service centre, and GP has a better build quality than the Swift. So the service centre should not be that much deciding factor in selecting a car. There's already lots of improvements with the TATAs. So within one or two years they will improve much more for sure. So I would suggest, Go for the G

  37. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:41 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay.1 more piece of advice. I had been after cars in all segments in a price range of 4-7lakhs for the past 2-3 months. This car is the most VFM. I'm not forcing u 2 go for GP. The Swift is equally gud car but as I said the GP is beter and alredy proven like the swift. Wat I felt abt the 2 cars I have told you. Now what u shud do is go to the showroom wid ur family, take TD, Check all d features of the both d cars and take the final decision. GP is an awesome car. all the best and regards :)

  38. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:49 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Kasturiraju.. Hi.. I also booked the 1.3emotion pack on the launch day itself. I had booked for the Vista Aura Quadrajet and I waited for the launch coz I was confused abt the price after the Jazz launch..I went through all the cars and I liked the GP verymuch. No cabin noice and good driving experience, alloys.Really a VFM car.. I selected the black color since my parents wanted black and which color did u select??..Kasturiraj, All the best and do really enjoy driving your GP...Tc...regards :)

  39. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 08:57 PM Vijay (Bangalore)

@Ashish, thank you so much for the valuable inputs. I'll go to showroom this weekend and update all of you about my experience.I felt Blue & me are kind of more money, 1.3 diesel emotion is the choice i'm nailing on..I'm going for direct payment. I hope dealer gives me some goodies ...what do you think I can bargain for ?

  40. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 09:25 PM Vijay (Bangalore)

@kasturiraju , can you pls let me know from which dealer you bought in bangalore & at what price you bought ? Do you know how much would be 1.3 multijet emotion ? thanks in advance.

  41. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 09:33 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay...The difference between the Emotion and Emotion Pack is abt 50000. In Bangalore the price of 1.3 Emotion is 559321 and for the Emotion Pack is 614331. The on-road price would be around 6.10 and 6.8lakhs respectievely. In Bangalore you have 3 dealers: Concorde, Prerana and Manipal. Vijay dat itself is gr8 advantage 4u. Go to all d showrooms and talk with d salesman and ask them what is the amount that you are going to get as a discount if you take the car from their showroom.

  42. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 09:36 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@vijay..Since you have 3 dealers there's a gr8 chance that you might get a discount. In Trivandrum we have only 1 showroom. They agreed for 10000discount for the Vista bt they didnt give any discount for the Punto. They are getting a good number of bookings. So they didnt give us any cash discount. And vijay almost all the dealers wud give u accessories like the floormat, reverse alarm, perfume, mudflaps and all. Three dealers means u have a gud chance for a cash discount.

  43. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 09:40 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay..Vijay the diff b/w Emotion and Emotion Pk is abt 50000-60000. I would say that the emotion pk is really worth for the 50000 you pay. you get 15" alloys, airbag, auto climate control, blue&me. Before going taking the TD I also felt the Blue&me and steering mounted audio controls a waste. But I would say it is really gr8 convenience. No car in any class in <10lakhs comes with a15"alloy.The automatic control is really a gr8 convenience since u dont hav 2 stretch 2 often to adjust the ac

  44. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 09:45 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay: Even if you are going to buy it from the market it would cost you more than a lakh, and u r getting it 4 jst 50000.Alloys 15" will cost u abt 25-30000. The auto climate control and the Airbag wud cost mor than 75000 and the blue&me. So even after 4-5years ur car wont look obsolete and u wont feel ur car is outdated, and if u wnt to sell it in future it wud fetch u gud resale value. So if u can spend 50000 more it wud be giving u car which is more worth than it

  45. on 23 Jun, 2009 at 09:52 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Vijay.I would advice you to look into future too. The 50000 u pay more,u will get more features for it. Vijay these are my advices and U knw ur budget very well, rite. So if you can spare that much money then go for the emotion pack. It's worth it. These are my point of views and rather than gng for my opinion u shud go by your budget. These cars can run very wel beyond the 5yr mark, so the emtionpk wud b a gud option, but do it only if ur budget allows it. keep updating and tc dear. regards :

Please share the on road price punto emotion pk petrol and diesel...

  49. on 24 Jun, 2009 at 06:21 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Anonymous... The mileage for the 1.2 Petrol is 12-14max..

For the 1.4 Petrol it is 12-14 city and 14-15 highway
For the 1.3 Diesel it is 15-17city and 17-19 highway

  50. on 24 Jun, 2009 at 06:31 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Arun... Hi..In Trivandrum the onroad price for the Emotion PK Diesel is 6.88. For the Emotion PK Petrol it is 6.33 lakhs. It wont be much of difference in Cochin

    @ Anish
intresting review of yours... I am from Ahmedabad which also has got couple of dealers. My friend bought Linea couple of months back... met with a small accident and got some of the spareparts damanged.... with an intention to change those tail lamps etc... he went to service station and found that no spares were there and asked him to wait for few days. isnt it rediculous? when they launch a car they should have enough stock of spares with service stations of Tata

  55. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 02:40 PM Neel

    @ Anish
And what abt the re-sale value? We generally dont keep cars longer than 2-3 yrs.... When we go out to sale Fiat cars, we dont get a buyer forget abt the less resale value.... while used car market is after Maruti in this segment atleast... Comparing the price and specs and resale value... Swift is stil the star for me... undoubtedlly GP has got better features... but as a gujju we always think of depreciation of the value in terms of re-sale value.... which is important atleast for me.

  56. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 02:45 PM Neel

    @ Anish
as you rightly said... GP is simply the best when we compare it with Jazz or Fabia or Fusion... but when its a matter of comparison with Swift.... its difficult to say... Jazz, Fabia and Fusion are expensive and so the same amount(excess wat we pay) will be recovered at the time of selling it... but in case of Swift.... its still cheaper with better FE than GP and after all will have better re-sale... isnt that important?... nothing taking away from the features of GP but.....

  57. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 02:48 PM Neel

    @ Anish
But worth money (Expensive GP compared to Swift + Definately less Resale of GP + Less FE of GP + poor service at service station for GP) ?????
    Big question... isnt it?

  58. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 09:08 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Neel.. Hi... hey I'm from Kerala. This is the second car we are going to take. I went after lots of cars. Then zeroed on in this one. Here we people want to keep the car for abt 7-10years. Thats why I wanted to go for a car that wont look outdated after 5 years[atleast in my point of view ;)]. Thats why I went for the Punto. No other car comes with same features in the same class. And Neel, i dint feel anything bad abt the service as of now and my bro owns a Safari and he alse never had bad exp

  59. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 09:54 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Neel.. I didnt intentionally compare the GP with Swift except for the space factor and the ride comfort(and that too it's my personal opinion). The Swift comes in the c+ segment and the GP comes in the b+ segment as per my knowledge. The cars i compared comes in the class with the GP. There is no point in comparing two cars in diff segment. I have no dispute abt the FE. The point is that the features that you get in this car wont there in much of the cars in the same class and price range

  60. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 09:59 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Neel.. Swift do have a resale value and FIAT cars do have a bad resale value. It had been the case with Palio, Siena and other cars which FIAT marketed. The marketing of FIAT was with the TVS and every one had a hell of a problem. I completely agree to that fact. But we dont know abt the Punto. It had been highly successful in foreign countries especially in Europe and so it could be succesful here too.. SO in turn might get a better resale value.

  61. on 27 Jun, 2009 at 10:03 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Neel... If you are thinking abt changing the car within 2-3 years then ofcourse you shud think abt the resale value. The Fiat Punto might get but I dont want to make a prediction that's not in my control :). Fuel Efficieny is good compared to other cars in its segment, which is what I feel. And Im most of the time talking abt the Diesel model coz it is the one which I took an extensive reading over the internet as well as with the TD. And Neel, these r my personal opinions..TC regards :)

  62. on 28 Jun, 2009 at 11:21 PM Joseph

@ Anish, What are there more in Linea's smart system? Is there any ecodrive in GP? I read USB stick has to be reinserted every time the car is restarted, is that true?

    Thanks, Joseph. (Thrissur)

  63. on 29 Jun, 2009 at 12:46 AM Dr. Vikas Agrawal (Raipur)

hi anish, you have given a fantastic review. can you tell me , is it true that we need to start diesel engine cars daily even if we don't drive daily, otherwise it'll not start afterwards easily.

  64. on 29 Jun, 2009 at 08:24 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Joseph: Hi, the automated system used in the Linea is known as the MyCar and the system in GP is known as the IntelliSmart. Both the system are the same and the MyCar is more advanced than the IntelliSmart. The differences are in MyCar(Linea) you will have Distance to empty indicator, setting units for range, distance, temperature, front passenger airbag activation, Digital real time mileage indiacator. The Linea has basic Mycar and advanced Mycar. The above said features comes with advanced.

  65. on 29 Jun, 2009 at 08:38 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Joseph.. I received my GP two days back and I checked for the USB. I didnt have to replug the USB every time I started. It is working fine for me. About the ecodrive system, The Fiat has introduced the Ecodrive system in GP with the Blue&me. You can download the ED from FIAT site and install it in ur computer. Then u have to configure a USB and then plug it in ur GP. Once it is plugged back 2ur comp, it will give u all details, including driving style and mileage.

  66. on 29 Jun, 2009 at 08:42 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Dr.Vikas Agarwal.. Hi,the GP comes with the CAN system which comprises of microchips. The CAN system will help optimize ur engine. Hence even if you are starting the car after a while you dont have to idle it. You just the car and the CAN system will do the rest. The new diesel engines are more trouble free than the petrol engine and so even if u dont start the car for some time and then restart it you dont have to worry since the CAN system will keep the engine good.

  67. on 29 Jun, 2009 at 08:44 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Dr.Vikas Agarwal.. Diesel engines used to be like the way u said. If u dont start it for a while it will not easily start later on. But with the new age engines especially with the CAN system, you can easily start the engine and it will give you good performance. regards :)

  68. on 29 Jun, 2009 at 11:56 PM Joseph

Hi Anish, thanks for the info. I was expecting to see mileage on trip meter. Hope there will be some option to upgraded the intellismart system in GP.

  69. on 30 Jun, 2009 at 07:05 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Joseph: There is a system to measure the perfomance over a set distance. I haven't tried it yet. There is no real time mileage indicator. Upgrade option too I'm completely unaware... regards :)

  70. on 30 Jun, 2009 at 01:17 PM Faraz Kazi (Navi Mumbai)

What abt the GP 1.2 active version? I do not have a lot of driving experience. should i buy this as or any other new car as my first or should i go for a second hand car use it for 8-10 months... This car will also be used by my sister who is learning to drive..

  71. on 30 Jun, 2009 at 08:00 PM P.P.Sivastava (Lucknow)

Hi Anish ,accolades for fantastic review, this is P.P.Srivastava from lucknow. We had given booking amount for I10 But now we are thinking to go for Active 1.2 L petrol.Had a TD on 29/6. It was a good experience . Suggest me what to do/

  72. on 30 Jun, 2009 at 09:34 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Kazi... Hi Kazi..Being an inexperienced driver should never be an excuse in taking a new car. Driving is an instict. Some people learn it in the beginning itself, some people take a lot of time. The only thing that matters if you are an inexp driver is the clutch plate of the car, since new drivers do use the clutch a lot. If the car is a brand new u cud change it within warranty, else u will hav 2 go 2 the showrum 2 change it. You wud get warranty for 4years.

  73. on 30 Jun, 2009 at 09:40 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Kazi.So if u go for a second hand car it is not going to make much a diff. But if the car is new and within warranty you cud go 2 the showroom and get a replacement if something happens due 2 ur driving. Be confident u cud be good driver. And ladies now a days are better than the male drivers. They are far better now from how lady drivers used to be 5-10years back. So even if both of u are inexp drivers a car within warranty will do a lot of good, if replacements are there.

  74. on 30 Jun, 2009 at 11:03 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Kazi.Instead going for 1.2l active I would recommend you to go for the SwiftLXi which has more powerful engine. The diff b/w 1.2GP and SwiftLxi are: Swift has more powerful engine. GP has more features. GP has significantly more interior space. So if ur thinking abt a Punto I would say that you go for the 1.4ldynamic, if you can shell out 50000more. But if your budget force you to go4 the 1.2active then better think abt the Swift Lxi too

  75. on 01 Jul, 2009 at 07:33 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@PP Srivastava. Hi Srivastava..I think the i10 u r gng to take is the 1.1Era which comes within the price range of the 1.2active. Both the cars offer the Same engine power at almost the same RPM same range of features. Powersteering, front power windows and ac. So now the factors that we have to look into are 1) driving comfort 2) Fuel Efficiency and 3)Internal Space. Both cars are known for good driving comforts. But since the GP is heavier than the i10 for the same power, GP wud b bit sluggis

  76. on 01 Jul, 2009 at 07:44 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Srivastava.. The more body weight at same engine power means the car wud be sluggish. But dont think that the car wud be too sluggish. If u r an expert driver u wud feel it. Otherwise not. 2)FE: no need to explain. More body weight means less FE. Srivastava if u r going for the 1.2active, the FE wud be 1-2kms/ltr less than the i10. Same engine, same rpm, same power no need of explanations, FE wud be less than the i10, but not by a big margin

  77. on 01 Jul, 2009 at 08:01 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Srivastava..3) Internal Space. Here is where the Punto is going to score over the i10. The punto has lavish space compared to the i10. So if you are so considerate abt the internal space then you shud go for the GP. The other two factors the i10 would score more. So if you are going for the 1.2 active then I would say that the i10 is also a good option. But I'm still not sure abt which i10 u r going to take and how much is ur budget.

  78. on 01 Jul, 2009 at 08:08 AM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Srivastava.. If you could go for the 1.4dynamic then I would say that it's the best option. The engine is really good and you can expect FE too. The price diff is abt 50000approx. So if you can give that much money I would say that it's rwally worth. And in case if you are not able to put that much money, I would honestly say that instead of going for the 1.2active it is better to go for the i10. Still I dont which i10 u r going for. tc regards :)

  79. on 01 Jul, 2009 at 09:15 AM P.P.Sivastava (Lucknow)

Hi Anis, goodmorning, we are considering i10 sprtz ( on road price Rs 4.4 L. My budget is around Rs4.6L. Pl also comment about the service and sparepartand resale value of both the cars. regards P.P.Srivastava

  80. on 01 Jul, 2009 at 10:01 AM Joseph

@ Anish, How is it going with 1.3 GP? Is it giving good mileage? Few TD reports are giving very low FE feedback. Is back seat too rigid for long drives? Any luck on performance system? Regards...

  81. on 02 Jul, 2009 at 04:47 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@ P.P Srivastava.. The on road price of Punto 1.4 dynamic comes around 5.10-5.2 lakhs.. Hence looking at your budget I would say that it is better to go for the i10 sports and if your budget could be extended then it would be better to go for the Punto. Resale value of Punto I dont know since it is a newly launched car, but it is getting lot of bookings. Abt 23 cars will be launched in TVM on coming saturday.

  82. on 02 Jul, 2009 at 04:50 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@ Srivastava.. The spare parts of both the cars are equally costly. The spare parts are cheap for maruti and TATA. The resale value of i10 is really good in TVM as of now. But not sure hw long it will go with that trend. In the current scenario I would recommend you to go for the i10 due to the budget factor. tc regards :)

  83. on 02 Jul, 2009 at 04:56 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Joseph: Hi my GP is doing good. I checked the onboard mileage calculator and found out that it gives me 16km/ltr in the city ride. Mileage can vary. I already did 230kms within city. I didnt go for the long ride. Sunday I will be going for a long ride. I will update you then. Joseph, I sat at the back for more than 2hrs, today during a short trip within the city ride, I didnt feel anything bad, but long ride I will tell you on Saturday.

  84. on 02 Jul, 2009 at 05:02 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Joseph: No luck on the perfomance system. I tried it but not able to configure the USB. Joseph one thing I found irritating is that if the car gets switch off, you have to turn off the car and then again restart it. In city drives you have to get adjusted. Else everything I found good and really enjoying the ride. :). No issues with the mileage.

  85. on 03 Jul, 2009 at 09:56 AM Shan (New Delhi)

@Anish: Hi Anish. Congratulations man for being amongst the first few lucky ones to be driving the Grande Punto!! The feature you just wrote about, seems like a very good thing to me. You see, I drove the 1.4 Petrol and the engine noise @ low rpms is so less that you can forget the car is actually on. So like standing at a red light you forget the car is running and you turn the ignition on again. We have all heard that hair raising screech haven't we? Well, that can't happen here!!

  86. on 03 Jul, 2009 at 10:03 AM Shan (New Delhi)

but there's another thing in your comment that worries me. does the car get switched off very frequently? could it be that the engine on these cars has not been tuned well for indian city conditions? Please comment. And also if you or anyone else knows someone who is driving a 1.2 petrol could you please comment on the mileage? I am only waiting to hear the mileage figures of the 1.2 else I would have booked this beauty by now. Cheers and happy Punt(o)ing!!!!!!!!

  87. on 03 Jul, 2009 at 12:33 PM Anish Samuel (Trivandrum)

@Shan.. Hi Shan..Thank you;).Hey Im really enjoying the Punto and when ever I go out driving every one do stare at my Punto :). Hey Shan, it's due to my driving mistakes that the Car got switched off frequently. Now I'm used to it and the car is no longer swithcing off. Earlier in traffic and all, it used to get switched off and it was my mistake. So nothing to worry about as it is driving mistakes. This is the first time Im handling a diesel car. It also added to the switching off.

Hey, All of You, the motives, designs & reviews of some auto mags gets creepy. Recently, Overdrive took 8 hatches to Ladakh and pronounced the Ritz, Jazz and fabia as best performers. What cracked people! Will people think so much of high-altitude performance when they are firming up their selection. Why the hell didn't they FIRST take these hatches from Kanyakumari to Chandigarh / Simla and offer a verdict about highway & long-range durability & comfort etc.Regards, Anthony Fernandes

Dear all, This car is good rather i am also contemplating to buy between siwft , fabia and Punto(active). The only shortcoming or disadvantge in punto for me is the space. i am 5,10". My hair touch with the roof. won't it look bad if i bend my face or neck whenever i drive ? Moreover, same with rear seat.Wt will happen if some friend or relative of mine, who is around 6 ft sit at the back seat. I m confused.

Dear Anish, Thanks a lot for the excellent review. I am planning to buy GP 1.3 Emotion. Could you please tell me which one is faster swift or GP. To my knowledge GP is a bit more heavy than swift,so please tell me as you already own a punto.

Between swift and punto , Swift is far better.FIAT many issues ask users of Palio and other models.
If the choice is between two go for Swift you are putting more than 4L rupees.
If value for money is your requirement check UVA 4L on road.

    Hi Anish,
Thanx for good review. I am Betson from Cochin. I am planning to by a car on December. And I had shortlisted GP 1.3 multijet Active, Indica Vista QJ Aqua and Suzuki Ritz Ldi. All these haches are using same engine and it made little confusion. GP is little expensive than others. But it is a nice car and I liked it very much. Vista is also a good car, but it's back side looks like a taxi. Ritz also a good car, high resale value with good mileage. But rear side ?. Can u advice....pleas
