Was on the look out for a sedan within the 6 lac budget, so when the
Dezire was launched it gave me better option to the logan that i had in
mind.Went online, booked a test drive on the web site and I forgot about it.Was suprised to get a call from Maruti about my request in 2 days time(!!)
and am directed to the friendly neighbourhood dealer. They call the next
day and come home with a sales pitch.

Here are my impressions:-

1)
The car looks much better in ’flesh’, photos do not do any justice. Its
availabe in 6 colours
of which all are new except for the ’silky silver
colour’.The white(which was the test car colour) looks great in the
evening and is actually metallic!!All except the Red colour is the only one thats nonmetallic.

2)The boot...well its
great.good loading aperture and not many protrutions. The ZDI model
which is the top of the line has 20L less than the other because it
uses a larger tyre(so the spare wheel takes up 20L).The only problem is
that the boot lid supports intrude a lot into the boot space and it may
foul with the luggage.
Oh also they is no access to the boot from the
rear seat.

3)Coming to the rear seat, it a bit more angulated
than the swift but the real change is the bigger windows on the rear
door wich gives it a bit more airy feel. Also i found the seat belt
locks on the seat scab to impinge on the thighs as one sits down on the seat, usually in most cars the locks come out inbetween the backrest and the seat scab(maybe this is a design issue)
.Still space is a
premium and the logan is much better here.Another plus point is the folding armrest provided on the VDI and ZDI, this really adds class and is a feature found lacking in costlier cars.

4) The interiors are
just the same ,like the swift the only difference is the integrated
stereo that comes in the VDi(middle model) which was laking in the VDi
swift. The stereo perse is just average, the sound output will not please any music enthusiast. The remote stereo controls on the steering wheel of the ZDi is a good touch. The front seats are supremely comfortable. There is no dead pedal
and no low fuel warning light but all other features are present. There is also an external temperature display(VDi/ZDI) and the 'light intensity' of the dashboard instruments(which are slightly different from the Swift) can be adjusted.(nice touch). Also the
glove box is quite small and its not lockable.

5) Engine is quite refined..its a
revelation..very silent(and i use a santro/ikon)and the torque is also
good.(better than logan).Anything above 2000 rmp and it flies!!.Overtaking on the highways are a non issue and the driveability with AC running is much bettre than the Logan diesel. It revs
out at 5000rpm(better than the logan)hence giving a much better range of use.I could not find any appreciable difference between the Dzire and Swift even with the 30kg weight disadvantage in the former. There is a bit of turbo lag below
1800rpm but its not much.

6)Handling is great,steering is a bit
numb centre but in the turns its great. The only weak link are the
tyres..165’s are really undertyred for a car of this size and performance potential. Why does
maruti skip on these?!!

7) All the safety features are bundled
on the ZDI model and the ABS is not even an option for the lower
model(unlike the swift), why this attitude i dont understand.

8)
finally i feel maruti could have played a little more with the front
and atleast changed the headlight a bit to make the dezire stand out
from the swift--or atleast provide different colour options than the Swift.

So all in all very impressed and i guess the
dezire presents better value than the equivalent Logan. Also with far
better residuals and better dealer support the only thing that the
Logan has on its side is a bigger back seat(not a very imp point for a
self driven person like me).

One of my friends already have a dezire and he is getting about 19Kmpl in city use!!

I have booked the VDI..so what more can i say.

ps.

i have test driven the Logan DLX, Palio 1.3 multijet,Ford fiesta, indigo
CS and i feel the Swift Dezire is the better and rounded package.

Update:
The delay in delivery of the cars are really unprofessional from Maruti's side.Guess they were waiting for the price increase so that the same could be passed on to the customer.I know personally of 3 friends who have canceled their booking and gone for alternative offerings. But i still have not found something as good or better than the Dzire and am hence holding the booking.

A comarison of Dezire with Ford Fiesta diesel base model that costs more than the ZDI would have been made in the report.

i test drove desire yesterday and i was amazed. But is the mileage good because maruti is not known for their diesel cars and engine.

  6. on 01 May, 2008 at 06:54 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Jeen my friend is getting 17-18kmpl in the city with 80% AC and 22-23kmpl on the highway 100% AC.My friend recently changed his tyres to 185/70/14 and since then he is getting about 1 kmpl less.
Also when did you book the car and did they give a delivery date in writing.
I have booked the VDi but was not given a delivery date in writing. Also which dealer have you booked the car at?
    thanks

  7. on 09 May, 2008 at 12:10 PM Rose

Hi Binoy/Jeen even I booked VDI on 31st March. Was promised to deliver in 2 weeks by AVG motors. But the car is not delivered yet.Now the dealer is not even giving a tentative date. It might get delayed another 2 months atleast.

  8. on 09 May, 2008 at 06:22 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

thanks rose on the update, it seems maruti has asked the dealers not to give final dates due to the hogh bookings, though i was able to find out that the number of cars will increase after may 2nd week.

  9. on 11 May, 2008 at 08:28 PM Aman Rathod (Bangalore)

Brother did u get your var yet?I heard people will have to wait for 7-8 months for the car.Whats ur experience?I am impressed by the car but the wait time is too high.

  10. on 11 May, 2008 at 10:07 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

i still have not got the car nor the probable date its not 3weeks since booking and counting, the delivery seems to be problem in the metros, but that may not be the issue at other places.
Also there seems to be some preference to customers who have paid te full amount at booking!

  11. on 12 May, 2008 at 04:56 PM Abhisekh

The DZire booking, I believe is happening on an All India booking management system. So location is not the criteria to decide. Hope you get the delivery of your vehicle soon.

Thanks Mr. Thomas, for you review.i am thinking to buy the Dzire. however i am not able to decide whether to go for Diesel of Petrol version. Yearly i drive around 13,000km. Could anybody help me on the economics and driving pleasure of petrol Vs. diesel Dzire.I drive mostly on highways. Tiku

  14. on 12 May, 2008 at 10:14 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Well Apchakravortty guess for your mileage of 1100km/month the petrol car will suffice, but guess with rising fuel prices the diesel car with better mileage will be better in the long run.
Highway use the diesel dzire makes lot of sense but if you travel with family have a look at the Logan as it provides better space

  15. on 12 May, 2008 at 11:15 PM Jatinder Kumar (Gurgaon)

Dear, Can anybody make me clear what is the average they are getting in Dzire Petrol.Jatinder

  16. on 13 May, 2008 at 02:29 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

petrol gives about 11/12 kmpl in the city and 14/15 on the highway with AC

  17. on 14 May, 2008 at 03:21 PM Abhisekh

Excellent review Mr. Thomas. I am also going to book DZire vdi soon. Hope you get your car delivered soon.

  18. on 15 May, 2008 at 08:02 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

thanks Abhisekh for your concern, am having my fingers crossed still!! There seem to be something with the color of the cars also, in relation to the delivery time, the silver color is apparently easier to get..

  19. on 16 May, 2008 at 11:10 PM Sanjeev Kumar (Patna)

everything is fine but the delivery period is too much to decide on the purchase. plz ask maruti to produce more dezire.

  20. on 18 May, 2008 at 08:18 AM Kishore Purswani (Bhopal)

    Dear All

It seems Maruti Suzuki does'nt care for the customers else otherwise what stops them to reveal booking status and the expected delivery.

I am sure booking is on an All India System and with planned manufacturing schedule it should not be difficut to work out PDC.

I uploaded a request (for knowing the booking policy) twice online on Suzuki site did'nt get a response and ultimately I have booked a VXI but if the wait is too long I may think of switching.

    K. Purswani

  21. on 18 May, 2008 at 10:21 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

here is an update, the problems in delivery may be because of the maruti plant being upgraded for the swift and dzire production, which may be done by may end, if so they may be a lot of deliveries from june..this is according to my dealer.

  22. on 19 May, 2008 at 01:35 PM Madhu Nair (Bangalore)

    Hi all,

I am little confused with Dzire VXi & Logan 1.4 petrol version. My monthly average use may not cross 800 Km & max driving will be in city and 2 long trips in an year of 1500 KMS per trip. Aslo comment on is it worth the diff betwn Dzir VXi & LXi & How is the Pick up of VXi. Pl advice on all the points. Madhu

  23. on 19 May, 2008 at 09:14 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Well if you travel with your family its the Logan..otherwise its the dzire....yes its better to get the VXi as the variant comes with an intergrated stereo unlike the swift Vxi...the dzire uses the esteem engine and the pickup is ok..it has to be revved up to be driven hard...

  24. on 21 May, 2008 at 10:40 AM Madhu Nair (Bangalore)

Hi Binoy, Thanks fr yr input. My family includes 2+2 kids only space is not major problem. Initially I was more keen on Logan, but from the reviews & comments like bad interiors & very bulky, not good for city drvng & After sales service may be problem, such comments from many people has come & I was thinking of Dzire. Pl put yr comment on this. Madhu

  25. on 21 May, 2008 at 11:12 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

I was in a similar situation when i went in for the Dzire, the Logan is great but i could never get up in the morning and look at the car and say..oh i made a mistake!!
The Dzire gives more than what a car provides, the ownership experience with the resale value will be much better for the Dzire..go for it...the waiting periods are coming down from what i hear, all were waiting for the price increase to be announced from maruti(which they did this week to the tune of 18000/-!!!).

  26. on 21 May, 2008 at 12:13 PM Rose

Hi, any of you guys heard of any priorities Marti give for corporates? One of my frnds availed this offer when he booked Swift. His waiting period got reduced to 1 month from 3 months. My dealer confirmed that I need to pay the extra 18K since my car won’t be delivered by 25th of this month,

Thanks Binoy for your vluable comments.

hey ur review was quite informative..thanks hey can u give me info regarding mileage of the vxi version for swift dzire?

  29. on 22 May, 2008 at 12:29 PM Vamsi_Goteti

This is really a detailed review. Thank you that really helps!!!

  30. on 22 May, 2008 at 01:28 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

@Mac Singh--am not able to give mileage figures for the VXI as i dont have any personal experience with the car, but it should be around the swift petrol range..11-12 in city and 14-16 on highway(with 100% AC)..

@anonymous--thank you and happy to be of some help

  31. on 22 May, 2008 at 04:03 PM Abhisekh

Binoy is right. Just remember that the mileage will be lower initially. After first 1000km you can expect the mileage to go higher.

if you run more than 1200kms per month then the diesel makes a lot of sense, but in current times with the disproportionate increase in petrol/diesel prices the diesel may be the better option.
This is in general..as to dzire the diesel is definitely the better engined car.

For monthly running less than 1500 km, petrol is a better option. However, these days, diesel cars are as noiseless and low maintenance as the petrol versions. So it actually depends on you- both are equally good.

  37. on 26 May, 2008 at 05:08 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

i would second raghav..especially when it comes to the dzire..the diesel engine is far better

  38. on 28 May, 2008 at 01:36 PM Madhu Martin (Bangalore)

I had booked a dezire VDI with Popular Motors,Thrissur 2 months back. They promised me delivery within 1.5 months for which I paid 50k to get into the priority list. The latest update is:
18k price hike will have to born by me.
They don't have any idea when the car would be delivered. Also the sales people have been advised not to provide any time frames(as it is expected to be in excess of 5 months). In fact, they have been advised to dissuade customers from dezire and suggest alternate model

  39. on 28 May, 2008 at 07:31 PM Tarun

I hv booked dzire vxi 4 last 3 months. at the time of booking dealer said booking is only for 15 days maximum but till nw i hvnt recieved the car. so i dnt knw y all of us r facing same problem, its nt car tht v shd wait so long, i m thinking of buyin accent gle as it has mre milage, cheaper, mre spacious. wht u think m i doin right

  40. on 29 May, 2008 at 05:38 PM Abhisekh

Hey tarun,Wait for some more time if you can. Dzire is a good car. if you leave out the current delivery issues, you will realise that Accent is nowhere close.

  41. on 29 May, 2008 at 08:26 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

yes dont go for a phased out model like the accent...moreover from what i heard the delivery is double in june..

  42. on 19 Jun, 2008 at 05:31 PM Dr N Subhash

What about going for Zdi that has more features than Vdi. Doesn't it got more value for money? I have booked for Zdi paying 50K. But the agency (Indus) asks me to change to Vdi for faster delivery as the Zdi is produced only in small nos. Or is it that the agency gets more benefit with Vdi sale. What shall I do. Stick with Zdi or go for Vdi?
    Subhash (Trivandrum)

  43. on 19 Jun, 2008 at 08:13 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Zdi offers absolutely more VFM, but its right in the SX4 range, so that kind of mixes things up.Well its true the ZDI is produced in far smaller numbers so the waiting period will be longer. No there is no extra margins for the different models.
Now what u can do is call the dealership and tell hercules or popular has promised delivery in 45days and that u want to cancel booking. That might speed things up.(it really works)

  44. on 19 Jun, 2008 at 11:34 PM Kapil Arya (Jalandhar)

    Haito All,

My daily running of car is going to be comaparatively small. I am confused between petrol and diesel model. Is noise in diesel more?

    Kapil

  45. on 20 Jun, 2008 at 11:56 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Kapil the DDSi engine is one of the most refined units, its not at all noisy. But for a few kms a day i guess you should stick with the petrol.

hello friends , I got my dzire LDi on 3rd april and had done 4000 km till now.it gives me 18.5-19km{AC} in city (chandigarh) 23-24km{AC} on highways. second service is not done yet as the dealer(MODERN AUTOMOBILES) says it can give 20km in city and 25 on highway after second service

  47. on 23 Jun, 2008 at 05:33 AM Srinivas

Info given by u very gd.why that maruti not able to deliver the car in time!!!???.

Hi, folkss! I have been driving a VDi since early May and have clocked about 3000 KMs. Have undertaken long trips apart from the regular 50-60 Kms a day. The mileage is superb, handling is amazing, comfort not to speak of from a car of this class. While I have got 20 KMPL on the highway before the odo clocked 1000 on board, I am now getting 19 KMPL in city, with the AC on all the time while on the move. This car is fabulous to say the least. Go for it!

thank you, here is an update, i still have not received my car..now its 88 days since booking and 78 days since full payment of 6.35 lacs..very unprofessional of Maruti. Had re-evaluated about some other car in the same price range..came back to the Dzire..the Car is that good..if only the company and dealer were better!!

Hellow friend,I want to buy maruti desire, but pl.tell me out of vdi and vxi which is better car,pl.reply immedatly.

  54. on 16 Jul, 2008 at 09:16 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

The VDI is surely the better one, the VXI uses the same engine of the old esteem, the diesel is more fuel efficient reliable and will fetch more resale value at the time of selling the car.

  55. on 18 Jul, 2008 at 02:50 PM Harit

One of the customers complaint about dezire is that RPM of the engine will not reduce after braking of car. Engine Rpm continues from where it stoped when car is put on motion,. Please clarify.

  56. on 18 Jul, 2008 at 10:21 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Hari, could not understand your question properly, well here is my 2 cents:-

..in a compression ignition engine(diesel engine) the high compression pressures will lead to a slight 'slowness' in decrease of RPM after lifting off the accelerator, when compared to petrol engines, this is common to all diesel engines and has not come across this complaint with the Dzire.
..also you might be talking about 'turbo lag', please clarify.
    regards

    a good review... thanks Binoy!!!

  58. on 03 Aug, 2008 at 01:58 PM Chandan Kumar (Faridabad)

i am planning to buy a car. my running is approx 80 kms a day from faridabad to noida and back. my stretched budget is 7.5Lacs. best on pocket budget would be 7Lacs.

I tend to drive most of the times at high speed but safe. fuel economy and saftey are my prime parameters. What do you think is a better choice of the following:
    1. City ZX - GXi
    2. Verna VGT CRDi (not SX as it is more expensive)
    3. Swift Dzire (VDi or ZDi)
    4. Swift Diesel (VDi)

I would also prefer a good built quality. I

  59. on 03 Aug, 2008 at 01:59 PM Chandan Kumar (Faridabad)

I heard and read reviews that city is good by its build quality/long life and smooth ride.
Verna by its performance and low running cost. 110 BHP diesel engine is afterall not bad.
Dzire - since it is fairly new - not sure about its performance. but looks and build quality are OK. cheaper than city and verna. fuel efficiency also OK. expect around 15 km.litre.
Swift - a hatch back. good pick up and average and cheaper than all of the above.

I would surely look forward for your recommendati

  60. on 04 Aug, 2008 at 11:37 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Well Mr. kumar with a daily running of 80km a diesel car makes best sense. As your running involves highway travel i would suggest that you stick to a sedan than a hatchback(swift). The city is going to be replaced. The Dzire had an average waiting period of 5 months.I would choose between the base Verna CRDI and the Fiesta 1.4 TDCI(which u have not considered)..running cost will tilt the decision in favor of the VERNA!!
Dzire is best VFM..but built quality is inferior!!

I am planning to buy a dzire LXi. I was using m800 and for the last 3 years esteem Vx. With A/c esteem is giving no power. While on busy roads i have to keep my fingers in the A/c knob while overtaking. What 800 delivered on 4th gear i had to use 2nd gear for esteem. If maruti is using the same engine for dzire as Dr.Benoy says, is LXi a wrong decision? Should i go for indigo XL or Logan??

  63. on 24 Aug, 2008 at 04:47 PM Feroz (Pallakad)

  64. on 24 Aug, 2008 at 08:35 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Dear Feroz the petrol engine in the esteem/dzire is a unit which delivers power at higher engine revolutions so one has to rev the engine to extract performance out of it. The AC in the dzire petrol does rob performance to an extend but not to make it undriveable. Get 4 people and go for a TD of the dzire and only that can convince you.
The diesel had tremendous amounts of torque and the AC is not even felt when switched on!

  65. on 26 Aug, 2008 at 08:09 PM Feroz (Pallakad)

thanks Dr. for the reply. As my usage is not that much to choose a diesel version, i enquired dealer about LXi and the information that even petrol version needs 3-4 months waiting period lead me to visit hyundai dealer. I was tempted by accent GLE black car at the showroom. Having 1500cc engine and rich features compared to dzire, is it a better buy?

  66. on 26 Aug, 2008 at 08:20 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Accent is a wonderful car and for the price that its being offered now makes it very good value.Only downside is that the resale value will be poor as the model is old in its lifespan and maybe around for another year(till the i20/i30) is launched.
Other sedans to consider are the Aveo(with 3 year maintenance free offer) and the ikon.
If you cant wait guess the accent is a great buy or better still wait for few months and get the new Ford ikon that is being launched.

    Mr. Binoy,
Thanks a ton for such a good review. I've been using Esteem VXi for last 3 years and was planning to shift to some other car now. Your review will definitly take me for a TD on this week end.

glad i could be of help to you Mr. Anand

    Dr. Binoy,
Thanks a lot for the prompt replies. Today I had a TD of dzire ZDi as petrol version was not available here. I am changing my mind to LDi. I am checking whether it can be made available soon in some way or other. If it makes six months as they say, I cant wait and opt for accent (I sold out my old car yesterday).. thanks again...

yes the waiting period is the real dampener, i got my car last week after 5 months but its worth the wait. The Ldi may be a better option especially in silver and white.Heard that corporate deliveries are also much faster.

    Mr. Binoy,
I don't know whether this is a problem with car or my driving skills. When I drive my Esteem VXi in city at lower speeds, I feel that keeping AC on is getting me less power. So I need to keep one finger always on the AC button. On highways it is as smooth as butter. But there also, when I touch 110, I feel like I'm loosing control of my car. I feel as if the stearing has become too free. If DZire is using the same engine as that of the Esteem, will this problem be there?

    Dr.Binoy,

Which colour did u choose? Do you feel LDi in black or blue uninspiring?

  73. on 30 Aug, 2008 at 07:23 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

@anand- this effect might be due to the age of your vehicle perse. The loss in power is there in the petrol dzire but not so prominent.Might be getting the AC compressor checked and the belts tightened will help you out.
@feroz, the LDi in blue is not so great- as in the LDi the A pillar is not blacked out and hence comes painted. In black color the look is retained IMHO.
My car is in 'silky silver'.

A general question: Can a diesel car be fitted with CNG? Or is it that only petrol variants allow CNG option.

  75. on 01 Sep, 2008 at 07:04 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

No -- CNG and diesels dont mix

    Hi Binoy,
I read ur review, well written 1. I had a TD over weekend, I wz highly impressed with ZDi, cudn't believe it wz a Diesel. No impact when AC wz turned on. V were 4 in d car n it didn't feel loaded. It wz Fantastic. I hv a few qts (all related to Diesel Dzire VDi/ZDi): Wud 15000 kms per year 60:40 city:HW make a case 4 a Diesel? What wud b the resale value of d car after 5 or 6 years. This may not b d right time but if well maintained, how long will this Diesel Dzire last.

  77. on 02 Sep, 2008 at 05:39 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Well Miracleman, diesel makes sense if monthly running is more than 1000kms/month-which in your case is true.
Maruti always have tremendous resale value. I am no expert to predict the resale value of the dzire 6 years down. But expect 3-3.5 lac for the VDi and 3.5-4.0 lac for the ZDi.

Modern day diesels will last 1,50,000kms easily so dont fret on that aspect.

    hi dr. binoy,

After an all kerala search the available offers are shortlisted. White LDi - Sept. last and Black LDi- october last. I am in utter confusion which to choose?

  80. on 03 Sep, 2008 at 04:20 AM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Dear Feroz, from my experience with the purchase the White color is easier to come by. If the dealer promises September last ask him to give that in writing, then only book the car.
Choice of color is a personal thing- IMHO black is more maintenance intensive than white.

  81. on 03 Sep, 2008 at 07:18 PM Feroz (Pallakad)

Thanks Dr Binoy. In straight deal, I will have to wait at least five months for any colour. I have no dealings with the dealer. Only contacts with their MD reduced the time this much. All MDs of dealership firms having chain showrooms are having a few dzires under their quota.

Thats good news- keep posted on how things turn out. Good luck!

DZire Vdi milage getting only 12 km with 100% AC. Any views

  84. on 05 Sep, 2008 at 08:59 PM Binoy Thomas (Trivandrum)

Am using a VDi for the past 2 weeks, checked mileage for a 434km run- 100% AC in city-car consumed 24 liters- that's 18kmpl!
