Tata has done a good job by introducing a petrol car with a competitive price tag. However, what TATA Motors has forgotten is that they are offering a petrol car in the small segment and not a truck or dumper.
The Indica was initially designed by IDEA if i remember. The body shape was then termed as BEAN shaped. Till then the story was great. Then came in the in-house designers of TATA motors who decided to give the Indica a desi face lift.
They gave INDICA a new delicate looking grill instead of the earlier muscular one, they gave Indica outsized and sharp edged Wheel Arch Flairs and side skirting and also redesigned the tail lamps in a funny manner. After all this heavy facelift, the car still has the same old SKINNY tyres.
So now we have an OBESE AND LAZY OLD WOMAN WITH WEAK KNEES and TATA motors is trying to capture the petrol market by telling us that it is fuel efficient and fast ! BIG JOKE
May be it is but can it compete with the agile and trendy looking Santro and Wagon R ? The answer is NO !
Inspite of flooding the newspapers and television with advertisements of the XETA, there are very few seen on the roads. I would say that i have seen most number of XETA's in advertisements rather on the roads.
TATA motors should should understand what the people want in a small car. The car should give the feeling of owning a big car but at the same time it should'nt look obese like the INDICA.
The indica should look sturdy, agile, quick, trendy, alert and handsome. Todays Indica looks like a obese old woman who tries to look beautiful by appying layers of Make-up.

GIVE US SOME CHANGE TATA MOTORS,
GIVE US SOMETHING THAT WE WANT
NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU WANT TO GIVE US !

A very biased opinion.Indica Xeta beats out all cars in same price segement(and many in a segment above) in terms of value for money, safety, space and equipment. The tyres are not skinny at all.Bigger tyres may have improved handling but would have hit fuel efficency.Has the reviewer even seen the tyres on cars like Alto,Wagon R? They are definately smaller/leaner than the meaty radials you get on Xeta.

  5. on 04 May, 2007 at 12:46 PM Sandeep_Parihar

Indica xeta outsmarts it's compititors in the segment but lacks fuel efficency (9-10 KMPL).

Hey Sir what Village are u in ??? XETA CNG are among the hottest cakes in Delhi

  7. on 15 May, 2007 at 11:55 AM Arjun

Its just the reviewer's personal opinion. Atleast i feel that Indica's looks r not at all bad.its got awesome colours to choose from as compared to Santro and Wagon-R.Interiors r superb for a small car..Its only the fuel efficience that is worrying.

I totally support the person writing the review. Indica Petrol and Diesel are outdated vehicles often purchased by Tourist operators and the lower middle class. I think all those people who have criticised the review are amongst the lower class people who have purchased the TATA product due to its competitive price. Compared to Maruti, Hyundai and General Motors, TATA is providing outdated cars for Indias poor citizens

  9. on 24 May, 2007 at 06:49 PM William

I agree that Indica is selling likes hot cakes in Delhi but most of the people buying the car are taxi operators. And yes most Indicas are seen in villages than in cities. Get real guys, indica xeta and V2 Diesel are pure bullock carts.

I totally disagree with this review

    A very biased opinion

  11. on 27 May, 2007 at 11:33 AM Sameer

I have had a very bad experience with the Indica. Its the most stupid car on the road. Its a car with truck like features. I have sworn, never to buy a TATA product. Now i own a Getz and i am very pleased with its performance and i feel that anyone who wishes to have a decent car for his family should never think of a TATA product. If you want to transport cattle or something similar, then Indica is the right car, lots of space. Ask any Call Center company.

  12. on 31 May, 2007 at 11:35 AM Shilpa Pradhan

I agree with the review. Indica is selling only for the cost advantage. Imagine getting a car for just 3 lacs with AC and PS. Otherwise the car doesnt mean much.Resale value is pathetic as compared to marutis and hyundais but slightly better than fiat. But i think the paint quality and interior looks are better than other cars. Indica Xeta needs atleast another 3 years to prove its capability. And all the guys who are jumping with joy at the launch of the Xeta should wait for the final verdict

  13. on 02 Jun, 2007 at 12:40 AM Kumar Keni

i dont think that the review is biased. All those who say that this review is biased should read it again. The writer has suggested the need to have a better body shell design and there is nothing wrong in that. Indica does have skinny tyres and the car looks broad and ugly when seen from the front or the rear. Fitting broader radials with Mag wheels will solve the problem

All said and done , watch out for the 2007 model of the Brand new V3. Its got the basic engineering of TATAs and the looks of a Pegueot 207. Should be out in November 2007.

  15. on 12 Jul, 2007 at 02:32 AM Balaji (Chennai)

Most of the people who prefer to buy a small car mainly expects fuel effiency and looks. If those two primary aspects are lost then, there is no point in talking about that brand.

That was really the best review i have ever read.

  17. on 19 Jul, 2007 at 11:17 PM Rohan Salgarkar

Yes i agree to the comments 1000% as it is still the passenger car which is no more than the 'cabwala' styles. Also TATA is just making news by tying up with big brands but back home selling the same old models year after year. This attitude is not accepted in a civilized world today.

  18. on 20 Jul, 2007 at 11:43 AM Krishnaraja (Bangalore)

All said and done. but who will give you a 1200 CC AC + Power steerting + Power Windows + 13 KMPL for 3.5 Lakh ? If you through peanuts you will get monkeys. Here your getting a decent car worth its value.

  19. on 11 Aug, 2007 at 05:55 PM Anurag Bose

Great Review, you have indeed giving a thorough bashing to TATA motors & their desi engineers. As u rightly said that the original Indica was superbly designed by Idea of Italy. TATA is just making minor changes to make it sell. You have been able to rightly differentiate the Pros and Cons of the indica. Are you into automobile designing or design modification ?

  20. on 14 Aug, 2007 at 04:13 PM Anurag

This gentleman feels SANTRO and Wagon R are Trendy ...A big joke . Such a stupid cramped cars are trendy and TATA Xeta is bad ?.The review is biased TATA Xeta is Value for money sir .Unlike so called trendy cars

I have test driven all the small hatch backs, Indica,Alto,800,Estilo,Santro and Wagon R
I felt like a car driver than the owner of it when i was driving Indica versions ,rest all 5 steps ahead of the Tata's

I say guyz, the XETA is a good car. All cars have pros and cons. Most class-minded ppl may dislike this one for its low price. In the early eighties Hyundai drew lot of negative reviews in the far east, when it was a newcomer to car-making. In comparision I am proud of Tatas making a good start. The XETA is sturdy, spacious, reliable, and evolving! I see that Tatas are listening to user views and are evolving. My experience with XETA was good.

Look is not good, Mileage is low, Rest are OK.

  24. on 24 Sep, 2007 at 03:07 PM Bharat Bhushan (Haridwar)

Bullshit. If this car is a truck then swift & getz are bigger trucks. TATA is offering the fatures of swift at the cost of ALTO This fact is difficult to believe for the person like this gentleman.

Xeta, no doubt makes more car sense. It offers space, safety, design, economy in one package. All other cars in this catagory are crampy in space, bumpy and more expensive abt 75k-1lac. This saving can be used to run xeta for almost 3 yrs.Now Tata are giving approved CNG kit without voiding the warranty, so if one has more running, cng option is there. It gives a big car feel.I have had no problems so far, its been 8 months.Im running it on CNG and petrol. Its proving out to be a good deal to me.

Looking at all the complaints whatever mentioned in this forum, one thing is very clear that most of the guys are blind supporters of Marutis or Hyundais. They are against TATAs and they cannot digest the success of TATAs in particular Indica. In our family, we have one Indica Xeta GLG which is purchased in Nov 06 having a daily running of 25 kms getting an average of 13 kms in city and in many occassions we had outstation trips and got an average of 17 kms with AC on. There are many variants

INDICA is hopeless bullock cart. Most of the guys supporting TATA on this board are people with low budgets so in a way they have every right to support TATA. However it should noted that TATA has been in India for over 40 years and its a pity that their INDICA which has been launched over 10 years from today still is not a trustworthy companion during long drives. I think the review was great and very bold. It is time for TATA to seriously give India a better vehicle.

  32. on 08 Oct, 2007 at 06:52 PM Imran Subhedar

Why all this fuss on this review ? The Author has just put his view that the old indica was a better designed car than the new shape indica which i guess is correct to some extent. Anyways the Indica sucks !!!!!! TATA sucks . . . . . .

Those who have doubts regarding Xeta's performance check this link out. Its from TopGear
    http://www.indiacar.com/topgear/shoot_out/bigtest_xeta_xing_alto_april06/index.asp

When it was compared to santro and Alto, it came out to be the best in the lot(which of course it is)

  34. on 11 Oct, 2007 at 05:02 PM Parmar Anand (Ahmedabad)

A very biased opinion. I totally disagree with the review. Wagon R, Santro are like toy cars. There is no safety at all in Maruti and santro cars. They can not pass the crash test. A real car should have space, weight. Xeta is a really wonderful car. It is giving 13km milage in city and 16km on highways with ac. You puke if you travel by Wagon R or Santro on a bumpy roads. All the guys talking against xeta are brand conscious people.

  35. on 15 Oct, 2007 at 07:44 PM Killerdude_480

I beleive INDICA is a good car with the engine of Getz at a price of Alto. Its also very spacious and has more Iron in it making it more safe unlike those plastic moulded cars from Maruti and Hyundai where its difficult to accomadate a family of 5. I also totally agree that people who are supporting TATA are people with low budget who would not like to over spend to get nothing in return, and its not the price but value for money thats making the car special.

  36. on 22 Oct, 2007 at 03:40 PM Sur Nain (Mumbai)

i totally disagree..the car is faster than a santro..wangon r..zen..it gives a tough competition to the swift also..and any other car than has the same price tag..if u are comparing this car with other cars having the same engine capacity..then u just dont have ur basics right..sure its a 1400 cc engine..but it comes with a price tag of a car having 1000cc or 1100cc engine if u want better performance and good looks then buy a swift or a getz..y go in for xeta..???it perfect for its price..

  37. on 23 Oct, 2007 at 11:57 AM Sm

The review is either biased or the writer hyper ... But then every coin has 2 sides & its good to see both of them.

  38. on 16 Nov, 2007 at 11:22 AM P K (Mumbai)

Indica has improved a lot since inception. Most of the Indicas seen on Mumbai roads have dents either on their sides or back indicating a bulging body design which need to be streamlined. The Bonnet should have a more decent angle from Drivers seat rather than wedge shape. Funniest of all is the tail lamp design which reminds like a "Neighbours envy devil's Horn advt" which should be changed with more decent shape. Tatas should do make over evenif at an extra cost. Price is attractive.

I have purchased Tata Indica XETA GLS a month back. So far my experience with the vehicle has been excellent. The experience at the showroom and during first service was exceptionally good. Recently I had a long drive (500Km approx) and I got around 16/17Kmpl mileage. The shock absorbers are very good and most importantly three persons can seat on rear very comfortably. The new biege interiors gives feel of high end luxury car at such low price. I am happy overall.

I completed 19000 Kms with Xeta this month - Nov 2007. I am completely satisfied with the Car. I feel, that many people ignore one fact that which other car (at similar price) give the following.
    1. Power - my Xeta is 1400 (1396) CC. I can put A/c even when 5 or 6 people inside. I tested this many times.
    2. Comfort - Awesome suspension unlike other Cars.
    3. Space Inside - I think the most spacious in its class.
    4. Price - Many of us are ignoring Price factor - Check price of Swift, Getz, Pa

Hi, I am planning to buy Xeta GLG car. As per the reviews, it looks like Xeta GLG is better option over Santro, WagnoR etc. for its price (abt 3.5L). And also for a person who travels <1000 miles in a month, I think petrol car is recommended rather than diesel (turbo DLG) as the diff. cost (abt 75K) which we can spend for atleast 5 years on petrol car and we don't have to worry much about maintenance for petrol cars compared to diesel car.
Pls advise me if I am thinking in a right direction.

Hi Friends, I have gone through the review and peoples opinion on Xeta and TATA.
When it comes to Hatchback segment cars, you have huge choice and most of the times you get lost as to which car is better... I was also in the same position few months back. I had done a thouough survey of all the cars like Santro, Estilo, Alto and ofcourse Xeta. And I have come up with an answer which has proved me right so far. i.e. XETA. I don't know why people are against TATA. Time will only tell the truth.

  43. on 21 Dec, 2007 at 03:30 PM Thanks

Worst review ever read. Remember what you pay is what you get. But here you are getting more than what you pay. Now with the 1 Million Car offer you get a Xeta GLS 1.2 @ only 3.05 OnRoad NOT ExShowroom and it has AC + PS and a lot of spacious and security. Its about a Ton which makes us feel more safe. Thanks to TATA MOTORS for this gr8 piece.

tata indica is ugliest car design ever in the history of car making. i dunno how a big company like tatas can not design a good looking car.. most of the cars under repair or sudden failure on the roads are tata indicas.. they look like ugly creatures from hell.. only taxi drivers may like them..i have been on long drives several times in my peugeot car.. through out jjourney i see a lot of tata indicas being either repaired or replacing punctures or burst tyres.. it has most ugly body shape, c

To Buy or not to buy? options Maruti Alto and tata indica xeta v2 GLS model. Alto is proven . Doubts about Xeta are its reliability and mileage. But gives you power, space. I am confused. Some of the reviews regarding Xeta are horrifying related to their service and vehicle stopping without any warning in the middle of the road. Help me out guys.

i totally disagree with u. i am using xeta and people have often commented about its stylish looks and the car is really smooth. i am getting 14km/l in city also

  49. on 09 Jan, 2008 at 01:57 AM Subramanya

Most cars on the road on repair are Indicas.....Yeah let us not forget Indicas today are transporting more people for more number km than any other. On a recent drive on Bangalore Pune Highway I was just counting. In three hours I counted more than half of all cars I saw in the opposite direction were Indicas alone although I was myself travelling in a Bolero. 2007 model Xetas are better looking too. Indica killed Zen D and Palio D. Time will tell who will survive Xeta Attack on petrol segment

I have purchased a Xeta few days back and yes I did read this post before buying. Looks like the post was started by a TATA competitor and not a consumer. I agree that Santro looks a little better than Xeta and probably the quality of interiors is also a bit better but you should know what you get at what premium. Santro doesn’t stand even near to Xeta in performance, space, luxury, confort and what not. The quality of plastics can be improved further but it is not at all bad and really not ba

I drove indica DLE 2000 model. After rel of V2 car was retrofitted with the features of V2 free of cost. I drove Indica for 79,000 kms. No driver. I've driven the car in day and night with my wife and daughters to Pondy, Kodai, Valparai, Munnar, Ooty, Mysore, Tuticorin, tirpathi, etc. It never stopped midway as alleged by some. Now own santro but not happy nor my family. Santro is refined & good for city not for highways and long drives.Looks- can anyone design cars uglier than santro/Wag.R?

  52. on 17 Jan, 2008 at 01:31 PM Wealthkraft

why all this fuss man ? guys there is nothing offensive written by the author against the Indica, infact his/her observations are worth noting. It is true that the Tata people screwed up the original design of the Indica. Everyone wants change and thats what the author is asking from the TATA people.... a change in the Indica design, thats it baby ! In my opinion too the design needs a change, its been in the market for over a decade.

May be it is but can it compete with the agile and trendy looking Santro and Wagon R ? The answer is NO !> So, is it fuel efficient or not? How fast does it really go? You tried very hard Sir, to write as creatively embellished a 'fake review' as posssible. The XETA is great.

For my budget I had 2 choices- Alto or Indica. I'm too tall for the Alto so there was no contest- Xeta GLS 1.4 it was.I'm happy with it & I think it looks way better than the Zen 'classic' or the original Santro which define 'ugly'.So till I can afford the Alfa 159 , I'll stick with this one.It hasn't had any problems yet in 1.5 yrs- so far so good.We people of low budgets aren't so well served by the others either - Alto? 800? come on!

Cool review, you got so many guys criticizing you but i stand by u for the simple reason that TATA sucks. Even after so many years of experience on indian roads, they are not able to make a trouble free car for indian roads. Maruti on the other hand proved to be the saviour for indians who were dependant on redundant car makers like Premier and Ambassador. The third to be added to this list is TATA who will always compromise on quality to give a cheaper vehicle.

  57. on 08 Feb, 2008 at 10:50 PM Spyguy76

Indica Xeta is good for a cab or for poor people who want a car for show off, otherwise its a useless piece of junk like most tata vehicles. Only ratan tata knows how to repair them all.

  58. on 16 Feb, 2008 at 10:45 PM Arun Sankar (Kottayam)

A really stupid and biased review. I still doubt the reviewer has done a test drive. It will just gaze without a noise at well above 130 kph. Does that means it is not as fast as a wagon r which loses control after 80s on curves ? Atleast take a test drive and make reviews. I TOTALLY DISAGREE

  59. on 27 Feb, 2008 at 11:11 AM Sanjay Kumar (Noida)

My brother in law has bought Indica xeta recently jan 2008 model & got the CNG kit installed from authorized installer outside. Total cost of CNG installation was 35k whereas Tata dealer was asking for 56.5k (52K+ 4.5k for extended warranty). Hence, he got the CNG outside and saved almost 20k. I took the test drive of the car for 20-25 km. I found the car responsive in pick up and there was hardly any difference noticed while driving on petrol and CNG. I was really impressed.

Also Indica family of cars pass all the regulatory norms and falls in 3* catagory. One of the safest and spacious cars in it's segment on Indian roads. Guys dont expect a Mercedes Benz at this price.

    Hi Everyone,

All I want to say that I am a proud owner of Indica XETA GLX 1.4 for a period of 1.8 years and I love to drive that car.

No doubt it is a truck in its own way, but why drive girlish car like WagonR, Santro which more desgined for people with soft hands and no sence of what is like to drive a proper car.

I am not TATA freek, but what's the fun of driving a car which dosn't show who the hell are you. A Girl or a MAN.

I think Zeta is value for money .

I have been driving this car for over a year, still no problem! Looks are nice, body is great. In Delhi's pathetic traffic, its better to own a strong car like Xeta, instead of good looking light body beauties i guess, what say!

TATA's have only been making trucks ever since the tech was bought from Mercedes benz(in the 1950's or so)by their collaboration. Since then it has been compressing the size of the trucks sequentially as in TATA's Estate, Seirra,Safari & now Indica petrol. Essentially all their vehicles are trucks which have been miniaturised over time with their improvements on same truck tech to produce cars. The last link in this truck miniaturisation exercise is the NANO which completes the range.

yes its design looks old and not upto mark, the great designs like spark,santro,i10, it stands no where.

Looks wise I may agree but people who are talking of class and budget and then talking of WagonR and Alto are making fools of themselves!

If you want class go for a CIVIC, CAMRY or Corolla! Anyway if one is taking a small car why the fuss when Xeta outsmarts everyone except the image maybe!

In the past one week in Mumbai, 2 Indicas and 1 Indigo belonging to Mumbai Police caught fire while runnning on the road. The first Indica that caught fire was on Eastern Express Highway, 2nd Indica at Garware House at Andheri and the 3rd Indigo at Lower Parel. Reasons were same. Short circuit. TATA is taking us for granted. I think they should put more money into R&D rather than bringing ut new models like Nano.

I am using Xeta 1.2, and now have fitted with CNG. This car is awesome in performance in both Petrol/CNG. I am getting the average of 20+ with CNG in city. I have taken this car on long drives 1500 km, new delhi to Jammu and back, grt on roads with AC , milage of 16 km per litre. the only negative point is the rims of front tyres. they cannot take the load of the engine. need to get the rims starightened many times. otherwise it is excellant value for money.

I totally disagree with the review. I have xeta which is giving me good averages inspite all those speculations given by non indica lovers. You cannot call the matchbox type looking cars like santro and wagon R as beautiful when you sit inside them. And we as Indian should appreciate the efforts taken by a Indian manufacturer instead of praising foreign brands. !!

I totally disagree with this review. It seems that the reviewer has no idea about XETA.The car handles like a big car with excellent ride quality.

I hv gone thru various reviews of Indica Xeta 1.2 and do agree that it's really a awesome car. I purchased Xeta GLG 1.2 in oct'2008 and the car is giving an average of 15 km/ltr in city and 19 km on highways. The car is being run between 60-70 km and with rpm below 2000.

Ya, i know that zeta has some minus points like fit and finish as well as pick up but still its value for money. It has got a very touch body that is needed for india's heavy and lawless traffic i guess. Isn't it?

  82. on 16 May, 2009 at 07:31 PM Animesh Gupta (Pune)

I totally disagree to the review... totally biased openion.

the starting with pros and cons itself tells that the writer is more interested in condemning this highly competetive vehical which had outcast any car in the same segment and no-one (i repeat no-one) has been able to give more car per rupee as indica xeta.

Excellent review. I wonder why so many people are behind the author's blood. The review is completely justified. Good one

Did anybody came across the problems in Indica Xeta fitted with CNG. I heard that due to low current the spark plug, a cable running from coil to spark plug or coil is getting damanged & requires replacement. My e-mail id is kms_ahd@rediffmail.com

  88. on 26 Jun, 2009 at 10:21 PM Rana

Many CNG run indicas/indigos have caught fire while the car was in motion. Brother, avoid TATA products. These TATA cars run well for about 3 to 4 years and then its like maintaining a white elephant in your house. The people on this forum who are praising indicas/indigos, will bury themselves once the car completes about 50,000 kms.

it is one of the worst car in all the cars

indica xeta is an outdated car. very poor after sales service too. i would use it only if i win it in a lucky draw contest, otherwise i will not even bother to spend 1 lac from my pocket to buy a new incdica.
