I have spent Rs.15000/- more for this car than my friends who will be buying this cleverly made car after 1st of March. But I don't mind. This car has been given some good touches to make it a wonderful personal car. Very good AC, good seating. very practical features with the best value for money. I didnot feel I was driving a diesel car. It revs up quite fast. . The rear seat back rest could have been reclined a couple of inches more for better comfort on long drives. Seats are now higher. Good handling. Mileage or TDi engine is well known. All my friends' bigger Indigo TDis give mileage of 18 with AC. This is a much better version as its now BS-III complaint. With decent driving habits it should give 20kms/ltr with AC on highways easily. With its shortened boot it looks cute from outside. But the boot space is really large. Better than the old Esteem, Opel Corsa or Accent. Over all a good car. Wait for my responses in 3months. You will surely get to hear about some other durable parts of this car as it would have definitely covered more than 15000 kms by that time.

22nd May, 2008: Hi friends! I have done 3500 Kms. I could not help but update on this wonderful car. Its AC is really great. I was getting great comfort even when the outside temperature was 45 degrees centigrade. Glitches ofcouse are there. The left side front wheel rim was slightly dented on impact against a hump. One wiper blade just collapsed and one pair of wiper liquid nozzle broke. Had to pay cheap for replacements. They don't cost more for the parts. Equivalent to costs of similar parts in Maruti 800, my first car for 10 yrs which is still in my possession. But great driving experience. Once I got my seating position right it was a pleasure driving this car. One has to go for frequent gear changes on busy traffic as the car only pulls decently in third gear. So for safety reasons I overtake only in 3rd gear. Overdrive is really powerful after 50kmph and at 80kmph it feels as there was enough power for a 6th gear as well. At 2300rm the car cruises decently at 80kmph. You get to 100kmph without even touching 3000rpm. But beyond that you have to cross 3000rm and over 3K rpm one gets a humming sound from under the engine bay or a kind of a booming sound which was threatening in the beginning but not scarring after a while. I have touched 120kmph and the car is so steady at such a high speed. I have driven in mild ghats and it takes turns on sharp bends at 70kmph very assuredly. That means it has good grip and very very good handling. Perhaps because of my exaggerated driving habits I may not be getting good mileage. The best so far I have got is 16.5kmpl. But I am really impressed by its superb cooling. Its a joy in this Nagpur summer. I hope the car maintains this in the long run. More news after a while. Until then happy driving. Use seat belts folks.

"However the steering response was a bit vauge." In one of the reviews I have read this. This is a matter of gtear concern as it reflects on safety on the road. The steering has to be perfect. Can Tata Motors clarify on this. I intend to purchase this car very soon.

  2. on 19 Mar, 2008 at 05:48 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dear Shri Sawhney I would like to rectify my earlier statement. Just now I returned from a long drive 275kms up and down in last four days in my new IndigoCS. The steering response has remarkably improved. Perhaps it was my misgiving or the system improved with a bit of working. But I must tell you its only covered 700kms and its roaring. The drive at high speeds is very very stable. AC is really cool. The balance on turnings is superb. I took turnings on hill bends at 80kmph no big deal. Great

i bought this car just a week back and my observations are that its a good car and value for money....the A.C is perfect and cools quickly...where as pickup, its too good...hope it will increase further after its first servicing done...for me, in city its giving 15 kms with A.C....

i am buying my first car.it took me 15-20 days to visit many of the show rooms to reveiw latest of the sedans.after due deliberation and going through my own reserch i found that this is the best of sedans with this price range.even other brands are also coming up to catch up the new race, like swift sedan.....

  5. on 23 Mar, 2008 at 05:44 PM Kiran

heheeyyyy....i hav been to long drive recently...and wow...the ride was too smooth..and as told by patnaik..the balance on turnings is perfect...and on highway...i got around 19 with A.C

  6. on 28 Mar, 2008 at 10:28 AM Yoganand Syamala (Jaipur)

It's a good&best car for middle class. However, the steering response yet to improve.

  7. on 29 Mar, 2008 at 11:00 PM Winner_71

Good value for money for sure but watchout the service of Tatas. They have one of the most horrible servicing setups. The engineers who manufacture the car and those who service it do not seem to be communicating with each other!

  8. on 08 Apr, 2008 at 05:41 PM Rajeev Sawhney

    Dear Shri Patnaik,
Thanks for the update on streeing. For Delhi, What will you advice out of the two options, A Disel Indigo CS or Petrol Indigo CS with CNG?.

  9. on 09 Apr, 2008 at 10:21 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

    Dear Shri Sawhney

Thanks for your reply. I have driven in Delhi and Gurgaon for 6 yrs from 2001 to 2007. If you are particular to own the Indigo CS I would advice you to go for the diesel. Petrol engine is not very economical. And due to the stop and start traffic of NCR you may end up cursing me. I don't know how good CNG would be on this engine. But I have a hunch that Indigo CS Dicor is on its way. Or even the multijet diesel one. Why don't you wait???

i want to know the mileage given by Indiago cs petrol version .

  11. on 12 Apr, 2008 at 09:54 PM Jeet

Mr.Patnaik,I'm planning to buy TATA Indigo CS. Can you please tell me how is the performance of the engine.
I've found in a comment that steering response was a bit vauge and unresponsive, is it right?
For long run (economy on milage and maintainance, performance) whether should I go for this petrol
version or it will be better if I go for the diesel version. Is there any option for putting central locking and power
window separately as an additinal gadgets.

  12. on 28 Apr, 2008 at 10:36 AM Hitesh Mehta (Mumbai)

sedan car must carry power window , its an minimum basic requirement of its class, and low responsive steering is a mojor issue of an engeenearing upgradation implimentation of tata house. and off course tata's have horrible as well as terrible servicing set-up. giving reasonable doesn't mean give Deferrer engineering and out dated middle class engineering.tata should come out of its middle class mantality, they can give better than this with good quality and better engeenearing. 14. on 05 May, 2008 at 11:52 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

As I told before, TATAs have released the DICOR version of Indigo CS. Its going to be more than Rs 50,000/- dearer than it nearest priced version. This is for Mr. Sawhney. I think now he can go for the CS. Or else if he is willing to wait, why not for the Fiat Multijet engined version which would surely be shoehorned to the Indigo CS before the end of this year. Let me tell you with the Indigo CS the TATAs have found the right car for the middle class Indian hoping to own a sedan. Take my word.

  15. on 06 May, 2008 at 10:14 PM Rohan Prabhu (Pune)

    Hello Mr. Patnaik,
Can you suggest me which one shld i opt, petrol or a diesel indigo CS, my running on an avg is around 60-70 km per day.. how much can a fully loaded version of indigo cs diesel cost me approx?
    Rohan Prabhu

  16. on 07 May, 2008 at 10:14 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dear Mr. Rohan the per km diff. of running cost between petrol and diesel Indigo CS would come to approx Rs.1/-. In ur running pattern u make a saving of say Rs.50/- every day on a diesel car. If u r making a saving of Rs.15000/- a year, in 3 yrs u r goin to recover the cost diff. for optin 4 diesel. Rs.4.88 Lacs for IndigoCS LS TDI at Nagpur. Add 10k for stereo, 4k for remote central locking, 1.5k for gear lock, 10k for pwr window & 12k for alloy wheel. Rs. 5.25lakhs = fully loaded IndigoCSTdi

  17. on 15 May, 2008 at 02:46 PM Bhandarkar

Thank you Mr Patnaik, Your Reviews and analysis is of great help.. I have to ask you, I am in a fix as to which diesel engine is the best .. do i wait for the 1.3 MJ Fiat engine or is DICOR ok.. what is the real difference between the 2.. I have heard a lot about the 1.3 fiat in swift D.. Dicor V/s 1.3 Fiat MJ Diesel.. what do you recommend? Waiting eagerly for your response..

  18. on 19 May, 2008 at 02:21 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dear Mr. Bhandarkar, The 1.3MJ Fiat diesel engine is definitely better. But then u have to pay extra bucks for it. With the Dicor itself they have put a premium of Rs50,000/-. But the Fiat engine is worth the wait. But I am happy with the BS III TDi. Its now one of the commonest engines going around. As I drive around the country, I feel confident with this engine. Diesels are anyway lean burners. So I would not yet jump on to a common rail direct injection engine until proven in a long haul.

  19. on 19 May, 2008 at 06:24 PM Roshni Shaikh (Thane)

Indigo CS TDI is the best car in less price , Fantastic to drive , good mileage of 20-25 on high way , 15 in city of mumbai.huge boot space, very spacious, good interior, and you will love driving this car, its worth for money. this car is better than Swift,i10,and many car in this or equal range.Complete family as well as corporate world car.Just go for it.

  20. on 21 May, 2008 at 10:28 AM Bhandarkar

I agree with you completely.. It is more economically viable at this point of time.. What would be the basic upgrades in terms of interiors of the car to bring it to the level of verna coz i liked it a lot.. any good brands for interiors & electronics in specific budget of 40k?

  21. on 21 May, 2008 at 11:44 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Well Mr. Bhandarkar, in 40K u can go for p/w at 10K , remote central locking at 4k, cd tuner at 8k & alloy wheel at 18k (neo). If u want seat cover, sunfilms, gear locks etc u have to dish out extra bucks. For p/w and central locking contact Autocop. CD tuner pioneer. Aura wheels is the OEM supplier for TATA hence may cost 20k. Now u decide, good luck to u. Happy and safe driving. Always use seat belts while driving and encourage ur passengers to do, no matter wherever seated.

  22. on 21 May, 2008 at 03:00 PM Bhandarkar

Dear Mr Patnaik, Thanx for all the information.. you have been a great source of information .. yes i would like to have seat covers, sunfilms , is gear lock a must have accesory? what would you classify as "must have"? looking at the cost model you have recommended i guess I must shell out 60K in the bag..for a comprehensive car with good interiors & music system. thank you for the responses..

  23. on 22 May, 2008 at 09:28 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

U r welcome Mr. Bhandarkar. Remote central locking is not 100% theft proof. Neither is gear Lock. But the thief needs huge amount of time and solitude to cut it open and its keys are tamper proof. It depends what is the rate of car thefts in the area u live in. I used to live in Delhi before I moved over to Nagpur. In NCR gear lock is a must have accessory.

  24. on 24 May, 2008 at 12:16 AM Jimmy George (Chennai)

Hi Mr. Patnaik...really liked ur reviews on Indigo CS..they are down to earth and wonderful. Thanks. Can u pls lt me know ho many marks will u give this car out of 10..and what are the other comparable cars in this range. Also, is the Tata service set-up good enough if not the best.

  25. on 26 May, 2008 at 09:58 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Hi Mr.George. I would give 8 marks. 2 marks lost on style and finesse quotient. Service set up is really good. The systems are good. Some service stations can be lousy. Thats because of some ppl are made like that. But systems are ok. I was attended by a service station in a highway near Itarsi very patiently with effeciency. It was to plug the passage from dashboard to engine bay, which the guys did for free with rubber gasket. Other cars??? Dzire diesel... quite expensive though.

  26. on 27 May, 2008 at 12:14 PM Bhandarkar

Hello Mr Patnaik.. I read your second review it gives the readers a good insight into the driving experience..incidentally, we had a maruti 800(94~2004) and now have a Santro zing(04~).. both great cars in their own rights.. Now wanna switch over to diesel.. I like to drive at high speeds 100-130.. so its a choice b/w swift vdi & indigo dicor (has more power according to ppl who have driven it) Fiat MJ & ABS would have been great..

  27. on 27 May, 2008 at 12:38 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Thank you Mr. Bhandarkar 4 ur appreciation. I have not driven a swift ever. So I cannot help u. I have some idea about Indigo dicor. Compared to Tdi its more smooth. At 100kmph dicor's Tach was at 2500rpm whereas the Tdi is usally at close to 3000rpm. dicor engine might be more frugal because of that. But then the difference is Rs.50000/-. I will keep posted about my experience with Indigo CS LS TDi. I m planning to go to Mumbai from Nagpur in a weeks' time.

  28. on 27 May, 2008 at 02:22 PM Bhandarkar

your observations are spot on Sir, That is where the Rs50,000 makes a difference and pushes it(Total cost) closer to the 512000 for the swift vdi which includes all standard accessories such as central locking .P.windows etc. But the only negative is the Boot Space. So iam playing the waiting game for a while.. But your posts are always a joy .. thanx for the views on Dicor ..

  29. on 27 May, 2008 at 04:28 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Mr. Bhandarkar I have an idea. Please see the Fiat Palio Multijet at the TATA show room. It has then engine of Swift diesel, the generous boot of Palio (which is comparable to the boot space of Indigo CS)and the TATA service network facility. I was impressed by the internal space of that car. If my family had not insisted on a three box car I would have gone for Fiat Palio Multijet diesel.

I want to buy petrol version of Indigo CS. Can somebody please help me with the mileage of the petrol version?? Do I need to pay extra for Stereo ??

  31. on 28 May, 2008 at 06:53 PM Harshit

Please also let me know that if i would be driving less than 50 kms a week, it would make sense to go for petrol rather than diesel!! Hows is the driving experience in petrol version??

  32. on 29 May, 2008 at 09:30 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

I am sorry I am not competent to guide you on the petrol version of the CS. However as regards the commercial aspect I have tried to address the problem in my own way in answering the blog of Mr. Rohan. You may also make your assements.

Some one please let me know about petrol version.
I am confused between xeta and indigo-cs.
I was thinking of xeta. But the indigocs-petrol version is also in my budget. My weekly driving will be 150 Km. Please let me knonw the on road price(Pune) with addition of alloy wheels.

Thanks a lot mr.patnaik, your useful insights have helped me a lot as i was confused between buying Indigo CS or Swift Diesel. I have decided to buy Indigo CS, though my weekly running will be around 150kms in a week and may be around 600kms on highways once in 6 months. I am not sure which version to go for? Shall i go for TDI or DICOR version, i am concerned about getting more mileage. Can you please give me your advise on this

  36. on 04 Jun, 2008 at 11:31 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dicor will give more mileage than TDi as I have explained in my earlier blog dated 27th May 2008 placed above.

  37. on 04 Jun, 2008 at 11:34 AM Prashant Kabra (Hyderabad)

Any idea how much would be approximately in city conditions with AC running full time. And is it worth to spend those extra bucks to go in for DICOR model. This is gonna going to be my first car, so i am pretty excited and concerned. Is it a problem if you dont use diesel cars for a week or so & there is a common myth that diesel engines have lot of mainetance. Pls advice me as i am planning to buy the car in a weeks time or so.

  38. on 04 Jun, 2008 at 04:05 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

See Mr.Kabra, all my friends who own Indigo TDi Std. Model sedan have no qualms about the maintenance of diesel engine. All of them were previous owners of petrol fueled cars.As u rightly said it is a myth as such. There is no problem if u park the diesel car for a month as well. If ur battery is in good condition then the self goes well. with ac running full time in city like Hyd in peak hours traffic u are sure to get a mileage of 13-14 in dicor. No less only more.

  39. on 05 Jun, 2008 at 11:49 AM Prashant Kabra (Hyderabad)

Thanks Mr. patnaik. I had been to one of the showrooms in Hyderabad y'day and the sales exectuive told me that i will have to use alternative days. Anyways Your views have enriched me.

Mr. Patnaik, I am planning to buy a car for my business travel purpose. I will be Travelling about 75-100KM daily. I m thinking of Indica Diesel or Fiat Palio MJD 1.3 or Indigo CS. Which one do you think would be a better choice, considering VFM, Reliability, Resale Value and Spare parts availibility/cost. My budget is actually 4.5l but can extend it more if the car is really worth it.

Can any one guide me. Which car should I buy among INDIGO CS TDI or DICOR or swift deisel or Accent CNG co.fitted with 2 years Warrenty ? I will be going around 1800 kms.a month. Is this Indigo cs desiel require more on maintenance in long run.Want to use any of these cars for at least 5 years. Which one among above be most economical. Also in mind HONDA 2004 with CNG.Any early expert reply is highly appreciable.

  44. on 16 Jun, 2008 at 11:13 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dear Kumarpal, Suresh Kumar, Darsh and Irish. I was away from Nagpur and too busy to look into the blog. Kumarpal can go for Indigo CS LS TDi. Suresh Kumarji u sh'n't hv any prob in converting petrol CS to CNG but it has to be after market fitment. Darsh, I think there is no problem with ur running pattern. And finally Irish - As far as my knowledge goes, Indigo CS does not require more maintenance than any other vehicle in its category. But u can go for dicor. Swift is different category but.

I recently have bought an Indigo CS LS. Its true man , itz really an awesome car as compared to other cars in this price range. Itz just been 2 days as of now but i have been driving my friends car from 3 months. it gives u a good mileage plus the ac and boot space makes the car more eye catching. But would like to suggest you that go for diesel engine only as Tata is not well known for petrol engines. Thanks

Hi Mr. BM Patnaik, your reviews and knowledge is superb. I am planning to buy a diesel car, but i am confused between aCCENT, swift desire, Tata indigo. i want a long car with good fuel efficiency and great looks. indigo is good in fuel efficiency. But it looks small from outside, especially form back(boot).rest its good. swift dezire looks combination of SX4 and swift, but my friend bought it,says its superb. Accent petrol(I just love the looks and if FE is good,, i will buy it blind folded).

  54. on 13 Jul, 2008 at 12:41 PM Dipin Dhingra (New Delhi)

Mr.Patnaik, i live in Chandigarh. And i usually dont travel a lot. Maximum about 20-30kms a day. Last yr i had blinf foldedly planned to buy Accent(Because of its luxurious looks),but i have heard that the fuel efficiency, is very low.its about 9.5-10km/ltr people say. Then my friend who has a similar kind of knowledge about cars, bought Swift Dzire, and he says the FE and looks are superb, its very spacious. the BHP is also very high. Then, is Hyundai Verna. Then tata indigo.

Hi i 2 bought this LS TDI a month back. Liked the car a lot. I touched 110km in Highway and the driving comfort is excellent. More over to that i liked the leg space. Even a man with 6 feet can easily sit in this car.
But the problem i found with this car is am getting only 13km/litre milage with AC and getting 20km/l without AC. Dont know why there is so much difference. I read in many forums that there is no much difference with AC and without AC. If some one can clarify my doubt pls help me

  58. on 15 Jul, 2008 at 03:24 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

It should be known as to how u calculated these figures. Was the AC mileage done on local running? And the non-ac mileage on highway? Locally you would get less mileage with a/c as u stop start very often in traffic. If the case is other than this please contact the service station about the load characteristics of the a/c unit.

If we customers become aware like this the manufacturers cannot take us for a ride and will always be on their toes to give us the value for our money. Thanks for your kind words Dr.Anand.

    Dear Mr. Patnaik.
i am gonna book an IndigoCS TDI tomorrow. which color would you say is best?

  62. on 01 Aug, 2008 at 10:12 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Congrats Mr. Nagar. Look colour is a personal choice. However in hot summer days when the sun is shining cruelly and the temperature crosses 40degrees centigrade you tend to wish the colour of your car was lighter. Because, light colours reflect light and as well as heat. That helps a lot in the air conditioner working more efficiently. Again colour matters when u look at the cleanliness aspect of you car. Otherwise the decision is yours. Yes some go by what their stars say (oops!!!)

Hi Mr. Patnaik, I am having Maruti-800. Now i want to go for new car. Recently I have seen the advt of Indigo CS. On going through the information available on this car I got the good reviews about this car. I have got one question that TATA are known best for their diesel engines. There is myth that diesel engien driven cars has to run for min of 50-60 kms per day. Which model of Indigo CS is good ?

  64. on 12 Aug, 2008 at 06:04 PM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

It is not necessary that they run for minimum 50-60 kms per day in a routine manner. As for the choice of model there are not many. You need to choose between TDi and CRDe engines. There is a difference of Rs. 50,000/- for a more refined latest engine. However, with TDi you get a tried and tested workhorse of an engine which is BS-III compliant too. I am having a TDi and not cribbing about it. Take your pick. Good Luck to you.

    Dear Mr. Patnaik,
got my new IndigoCS and as the whole world does...i also had to go by my wife's words - bought a sparkling gold.
it looks good and i can't comment of anything else at present.
but an issue i am facing is that the AC control (controls for fans direction on windscreen etc) are not working now - were working previously. got to get that checked.

Hi Patnai, Really want to appreciate your way of immediate response for all the queries. Expecting same for my query....

I'm planning to buy new CS(Dicor)Diesal and would like to know about few issues which grabed from earlier comments. Is it any problem with sterring and pickup in diesal engine. Also would like to know about the AC and comfort of driving in city and highway. Can you assist me with clear picture on the same. Thanks in Advance.

There is no problem with steering and pickup. AC is best in any class. Highway driving is very good experience. City driving requires frequent gearshifts but i got used it and don't find is bothersome. All the best to you Mr Sathish. As regards Mr Mehta i would like to advice him to read the earlier comments on the same mileage issue between TDi and Dicor. I would advise him to go for Indigo CS if his budget is within Rs5.5 Lakhs.

    Congrats for owning a CS.
Require help in selecting a car for me with foll reqmt: Accomodating family of six (may entail modifying front seat to occupy 3)..dont know whether advisable to do so..I estimate to drive 800-1000 km/mth in city & 200 km on highway..Budget 5-6 lacs..fuel efficiency, comfort, bootspace are important..ABS-not sure..I'm currently confused between Logan v/sIndigo CS v/sIndica Vista MJ..Which one to go for (petrol/diesel)and which model(e.g.logan's available in Edge/GLX/GLS

  70. on 08 Sep, 2008 at 09:59 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dear H.K. To carry six you have to have a SUV. I feel Logan can carry 4 at back with a squeeze. But for how long? Logan has best boot space. So has Swift Dezire. The choice of fuel is ur personal opinion considering ur purse. Ur budget of 5-6 lakhs proves that you have a tight purse. Therefore Indigo CS diesel (TDi/Dicor) is best for u. If u can afford petrol go for Dezire. I would advise u drop the 6th passenger. But if he is a must then go for Bolero in ur budget. I dont see any other car.

Thanks..Sir,Dzire has waiting time of 5-6 mths..i was analysing onroad price-Logan Edge GLS costs 6.25L while CS TDI and Vista MJ Aura 5.5L.Have learnt MJ is superior diesel engine at price lower than Logan petrol..also not much difference in width at back between logan and vista but lower in CS..also in vista comfort seems good though bootspace is less..i know this is a Indigo CS forum, but thought you always provide help to people like us..if I drop the 6 person reqmt, what would you suggest..

i just booked cs ls-tdi... pls tell me its a rite choice for young ppls who need'as- milage/pick-up/style n cost??did i done rite think to buy dis car??

  73. on 11 Sep, 2008 at 09:52 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

DearH.K. For 5 ppl and fair amount of luggage in diesel class the best in class of hatchbacks is Fiat Palio Multijet 1.3. U can take my word for it. In petrol u have ur Swift hatchback. In sedan with ur price range u dont have choice but Indigo CS. Indica Vista....lets wait becoz its an entirely new vehicle with new features. Its too early to comment on its worth - TATA or BATA. Our farmers chose the wheat grain by crushing it in their palms and fists not by the name of the farmer who grew it.

  74. on 11 Sep, 2008 at 09:58 AM Bm Patnaik (Nagpur)

Dear Anonymous dated 11th Sept. You have done a very smart thing by choosing this car. Yet I dont know ur budget and ur requirements. I dont know how fast u want ur pick up to be and whats ur style quotient. But take my word style is temporary and class is permanet. This car has got class. It fulfils the requirements of a car - space, economy, boot, cooling, comfort, safety & reliability. You get all the basic things at a moderate cost and lots of trust.
