I own the i10 for 14 months and have already completed 25000 kms.

I travel for 85 kms a day and was looking for a car with good mileage, easy handling (I travel in Sakinaka traffic) and stability on highways:

I think i10 is the best petrol car in this range with. If I had the money to buy a diesel, I would go for a maruti swift though.

I got Era for 4.45 L on road. I went to buy a santro XL but my family saw the i10 and we couldnt resist. The exterior looks are average for me (although that depends on personal choice). The more you drive this car, the more you will love the features and the interiors - the best in its class (you will always feel that you are driving a big car). Smart places to keep stuff in the doors. The gears shifted above give a lot more place to keep things such as diaries, 2 bottles, cigarate case, mobile phone... lots of space. The uplifted gears give extremely good comfort while driving for a long time. I am 5 feet 11 and even after i adjust the front seat comfortably, there's enough space to sit behind (this is more than swift).

The pick up isnt as great as the Santro in the 1st gear, but is still acceptable. From the 2nd gear its extremely peppy. There's negligible difference in driving with or without A/C in terms of pick up.

Hyundai claims that the A/C consumes 25% fuel. I got a properly tested mileage of 16 kmpl with full A/C on and full load (5 people) from Kalyan to Nasik (Poor quality highway with a Ghat). On return i almost had to drive in 2nd - 3rd gear due to bad road and traffic. By that logic this car should easily deliver a non ac mileage of 20 kmpl on a good highway.

The vehicle is extremely stable even at 125 km per hr - i've touched 150 too!!

It is excellent in terms of maneuverability in the city.

The shock absorbers are below par and that is the only negative I see. I read a user review on the same website saying that everything before the chasis and the engine towards the front is fibre, which i must admit is true. There is hardly any steel there so I always have to maintain a safe distance from the car before me. The car being so stable and zippy can make you drive faster than you should.

Other Cars that I saw:

Maruti Swift Petrol - Good features, Decent interiors (though grey/black), Good looks, Low mileage, Poor Pick Up

Maruti Swift Diesel - Excellent Pickup, Excellent Fuel Economy with all features of petrol. Only negative - Was too expensive for me. 5.75 lacs on road!

Cars below dont stand a chance when you compare the interior looks and interior features of the i10.

Santro XL - The production of this model has stopped but some dealers who have it sell it extremely cheap.

Chevrolet Spark - Is cheap, good fuel economy but too cramped. Interiors dont stand a chance.

Zen Estilo - If you are a Maruti fan. Why not go for a swift?

Wagon R - Shakes on highway above 80 kms per hr.

Wagon R LPG - LPG is no longer cheap. My previous car was LPG converted so I know the pains. Shakes on highway above 80 kms per hr.

Alto - Too small

Indica Petrol - My family has had 3 cars from Tata before this. The only + point: Very cheap for the space it offers.

Indica Diesel - I didnt want to buy a taxi.

mr. yash, it's an extremely balanced review. i-10 is a modern set-up and ought to be good - time would tell for sure. i sat at the back on test driving of the i-10, and the alto & the estillo; and felt the vast difference. i opted for the magna and i am glad for it. the car is to be delivered tomorrow - my daughter should be very pleased with it's use - of that i am certain - also, i agree, the cost seems to be a bit high as compared to the competition. uday l gokhalay

Found your review very useful. I am in process of buying i10. You have mentioned mileage on Highway. What is the mileage in the City. I also stay in same city like you.

  8. on 16 Mar, 2008 at 11:38 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

Hi Jagdish... i've got mileage ranging from 11.5 to 15 kms in city depending on traffic conditions

  9. on 22 Mar, 2008 at 08:07 PM Vishal

Hi Yash.By far, one of the most useful thread.Thanks.Well, I plan to buy the i10, my first vehicle. But am a bit confused. We are a family of four. The car would be used during weekdays, primarily in the city for not more than 20-25 kms a day and on weekends for long drive trips, which would be around 100-150 kms.I wonder how does the i10 perform on the highways and hill stations?I did check out the car,and found the boot space a bit cramped? And is it too bumpy at the rear?Wat say people?

  10. on 23 Mar, 2008 at 10:48 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

Hi Vishal.. Thanx for your comments. The car is extremely stable on highways (i've driven upto 125 km/hr) and has good power to take you through the ghats (I traveled with 5 people). The boot space is as much as the santro. I dont know if its bumpy at the rear as I always drive. The suspensions are as effective as other small cars in this segment functionalitywise but lack the smooth soothing effect. This is noticable on patchy roads only. If not, then you may not even realize the difference.

  11. on 01 Apr, 2008 at 03:56 PM Jiyyer4

Mr. Yash It is an excellent review with well balanced views of not only i10 but also other small cars including Swift. Will always remember this before buying my next car.

Hi.. It is an excellent review. I am in confusion between Getz 1.1 GVS and i10 Magna. Can you please provide some information comparing these two cars. We are a family of 4 and will mostly using in city and once in 4/5 months on highway for about 1500 kms. Initially i was favouring Swift VXI. Thanking you.

    Hi buddy
Thansk for ur good +ve and -ve thoughts on the car..
its good..i too am planning to buy a i10 magna and searching on the internet for lots and lots of reviews about i-10 cause its a new car and i need to thinka bout my worht of puting 4.4k on a car.....
    thanks buddy
    one quesion ..
is it comfortable for 3 to sit in i-10 or in swift???

  14. on 24 Apr, 2008 at 12:37 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

    Hi Kumar&Fred,
    What i know of Getz:
a)Less Mileage-This car is made for comfort
    b)Expensive
c)Model-This model has been in the market for many years and I am not impressed with the interiors.
I think i10 Magna is a better car that Swift VXI. in terms Mileage,Power,Interiors,Space. If you want to go for swift - its the diesel that you should go for. A friend has recently booked Era for 4L. The price has reduced.
I10 has more space behind the drivers seat compared2swift.Cons-Avg Suspension.

    Hi Yash...

Thnks for ur superb information on car with ur exp on it.
Am planning to buy a car i10 or Santro little bit confused of these 2car.
So according to safety and mileage and performance wise which will be the better one.

  18. on 21 May, 2008 at 01:05 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

    Hi Ramesh,
I would prefer i10 for Mileage, performance(including stability on highways) and satisfaction of owning a good car.
For safety: I am not aware of the steel strength of the i10 but the Santro looks strong in this aspect.
Again, i've owned both cars and i would go for the i10 given that the price difference is not huge.

    hi yash,
i just want know the maintainance cost of the car

  24. on 23 Jun, 2008 at 08:52 AM Yashodhan (Thane)

i am using it for more than 7 months now... driven more than 11000 kms. Literally zero rs spent apart from engine oil and filter change..
Once there was a humming sound near the wheel but that was solved after just oiling and greacing which was done in warranty anyways

    Mr.Yash,
It was really a good review.I felt santro appears to be having slight edge over i10 in ease of driving and stability. While i10 is certainly impressive in looks etc, feel more secure driving santro. Please comment and for a driving 1000 km a month with 70% on high way ,which car would be preferable .Appreciate response that would help me making a decision.

We are giving away our 3 year ld Santro Zing XG and buying the i10.I loved the look of this car..interior and exterior. Good value for money I would think. More spacious than the Santro.Big enough to carry a family...small enough to fit into an Innova ( for an extended family) :)

  28. on 22 Jul, 2008 at 04:51 PM Madhujith (Mysore)

Hey Yash, any thoughts or comparisons with the Skoda Fabia 1.2 Mpi that you have. Apart from the price of course, which is a bomb.

  29. on 07 Aug, 2008 at 04:18 PM Ramu

Hi Yash, thank u very much for the review. I want to buy a small car with a maximum budget of 4 lac including all taxes. I drive not more than 500 km/month. Please advise me between Santro Xing GL, GLS and i10 D-Lite and Era versions. This will help me a lot. Look forward to hearing from you and also others who know about these models well.

  30. on 07 Aug, 2008 at 08:30 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

    Hi Ramu,

If you dont drive much, Santro GL will be a good option as it should fit within 4 Lacs ex Mumbai. I dont know the price for D-Lite but i recommend buy at least Era if you go for i10. Spark is a also a good choice though it is not as spacious.

  31. on 09 Aug, 2008 at 09:27 AM Munindra_Baishya

    Hi Yash,
I am a 6 feet guy. I am also planning to buy i10. Do I get any problem in long drive ?

    Munin (Guwahati)

  32. on 10 Aug, 2008 at 07:15 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

This depends on what you are used to driving now. Ex: I am 5'10" and I feel comfortable in i10 more so because I owned a Santro earlier. However, when I drive the i10 after driving my friends Ford Fiesta I feel the room is just about enough for my height.

  33. on 12 Aug, 2008 at 12:07 PM Anil Dabhade (Nashik)

Hi Yash...very informative review. I had owned Santro ZipDrive for 3 years then changed to Indica Xeta for 1 year and now going again for Hyundai, i10 Sportz 1.2 Kappa. The Santro gave me 20.5 on highways and I expect the same from i10 Sportz. Have you driven this model and what are your experiences. I would appreciate everyone who shares their views. Thanks.

  34. on 12 Aug, 2008 at 03:53 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

Hi Anil.. I have not driven Kappa yet.. I'm sure it will be a boom boom vehicle. How did u find the Indica shock absorbers as compared to Santro?

    Hi Yash,
You have really provided a good review for Era but I'm planning to go for Magna 1.2 (Around 4.25 Lacs) or Sportz 1.2 (Around 4.45 Lacs) version of i10. Do you think that'll be a good value for Money as compared to Era.

    Hi Boss,
Good reviews of the cars. Thanks for your comments and efferts.
I would like to book i10, sportz 1.2 (metalic), Its may first car.
is any body used this model & how the performance is ?.

  41. on 02 Sep, 2008 at 04:45 PM Manish (Gurgaon)

    Mr Rayan,
I had recently taken a test drive of i10 sportz 1.2 and I must say,its a good car. I really liked its interiors. The only thing I didnt like abt it is it's low pickup in 2nd gear. If you are in a slow traffic you must change to 1st to lift it up. Apart from this,I personally feel that instead of Sportz 1.2, Magna 1.2 would be a better option. Paying Rs. 31000 extra, just for a stereo system, rear defogger & rear viper doesn't sound cost-effective. Believe me there's no other diffrence

    Mr Yash!!!!!

Nice to c ur review..it has chnaged my mind from buying other cars to this new i10 Era.. I wil definatley going for this car...

  43. on 09 Sep, 2008 at 11:15 PM Anil.77

    hi,
well! i10 is such a tiny-car(smaller then spark) very poor mileage plus too expensive. also, so called i10k-80PS at 6200+rpm ,which is impossible in normal used. to reach 6200+rpm t'meter may cross red-line which is bad. 80ps is just on paper. For Indian! Comfort , Mileage & Service is must.
those who were eyeing at i10 must go for maruti swife or xink-1.1lt. basically-actually,hyundai car=v.poor mileage beside-them GM is placed

  44. on 09 Sep, 2008 at 11:28 PM Anil.77

    hi,yash & yash-fans pls consult expert.......

    and hi,manish,umesh_raut u r rite.

I'm planning to buy i10 in few weeks but before that i need all ur reviews abut the mileage and maintenance. Anybody please suggest..

  46. on 16 Sep, 2008 at 01:17 PM Yashodhan (Thane)

Hi Anil.77. Completely agree when you say ppl should go for swift. Even i have encouraged ppl in my blog to go for swift(but diesel). For mileage, please get ur swift petrol and lets do a mileage test live.!! In terms of pick up and control.. anyone who has driven both cars can tell.
For everyone else: Even my view is that swift diesel is a better deal if you can afford it.. but i could not, spark is value for money.. but if u want most things to be near perfect within 4.5L.i10 is the best dea

i10 Magna is an execellent car in its class with good features like central locking, all power windows/ power steering. It has been stable at high speeds and pickup is also good.Brakes are excellent. But all may not like the beige interior.

    Hi All,
Saw a few questions on Mileage. This is what I get on a few frequent routes
Ans: 1) Kalyan to Sakinaka (26 kms good road + 14 kms extreme traffic - Mileage of 13kmpl with AC
    2) Thane to Kalyan (25 kms avg highway) - 17 without AC
    3) Kalyan - Pune (110 kms Expressway + 40 kms avg highway) - 19 to 21 with A/C
    4) Nasik to Kalyan (240 kms return - average highway (16 kmpl with A/C)
    Maybe this will help.
    Thanks,
    Yash

    Hi All
I have just test driven a i10 era, which has impressed me of course, but only that the clutch peddle positioning is bit stressful to press the peddle to the floor.
I am thinking of buying this over Wagan R as i find i10 is better in any ways, only concern was the maintenance costs of i10 era compared to Wagon r down the line may be after 2yrs?.
Any input on this would help me decide

Thanks Yasho, your review is very well written and without prejudice. I hadmy mind waver between the Santro GL & the WagonR Lxi. I am a typical mileage conscious Mumbaikar as we spend more time in traffic than on open roads. But I think I can spend the extra bucks to go in for the i10 Era for the novelty factor :).

  71. on 12 Aug, 2009 at 09:56 PM Rakesh

I have Chevy Spark, and have test driven i10 too. Interior has improved in new SPARK and the space is less than i10, but the phase "too cramped" is not OK, it is just less than i10. Rear seat in all small hatchbacks is non-luxury. In fact SPARK looks to dimunitive from outside, but has surprisilgly enough spae for a small hatchback. For the discounted price for the same features it is value for money and easy to drive.

    Hi Pankaj,
Magna has more advantages as it will come with a Kappa engine and a few more features. However, my guess is that in Mumbai it will go beyond the cost that you have mentioned
