Back in 2004, while on the lookout for a car for my wife, we decided that a mid-sized car is what we would prefer. I already had my Matiz which I was not getting rid in a hurry, and a new car in the family had to be a bigger car capable of comfortable and safe long drives, having decent boot space and generally a good car to drive in the city and outside

The cars we compared were:

Ford Ikon
Hyndai Accent
New Honda City
Tata Indigo
Fiat Palio & Weekend
Opel Corsa

Price was one of the foremost factors in our decision making, which meant we had to leave out the Honda City from our choices. We did not like the drive in an Ikon, the Indigo was put put together well. We loved the Fiat Palio Weekend estate. It had lots of space, had a very efficient 1.9L deisel engine and good off-roading capabilities as well, what with its big ground clearance and large 16" tyres. But Fiat was almost dying, not only in India but in Italy as well. This was before Grande Punto happened to them. So we decided against buying another car which would be phased out soon (the Matiz was already phased out by then).

It was then that we went to Sundaram Motors in Bangalore and test drove the Corsa. It was way different from what I was used to in the Matiz. This car was much heavier at about 1270kg and  considerably bigger. But what impressed me the most was the ride quality. The legendary German quality was to visible in ample measure everywhere in the car. Everything from the door to the steering wheel to the gear stick had excellent feel and sturdiness. The suspension would probably take the cake. It did very well in the bad patches of roads that are found in abundance in Bangalore.

Our decision was pretty much made after the Corsa test ride. I did not even think of Hyundai Accent Petrol as I was not very impressed by either its looks or what I had read about its performance.

Over the last 4 years, we have driven it many times to cities like Mangalore, Pondicherry, Ernakulam, Trivandrum, Goa, etc. The feeling of safety is immense when you know that you are sitting inside a steel cage which is designed to withstand formidable amounts of energy transferred to its frame should an accident happen. I find the Corsa quite interesting to drive. The steering wheel is simply superb. It gives me the right amount of feedback and at high speeds (150kmph is the fastest I have gone) it is very reassuring to hold on to. So are the brakes. Once on a Sunday night, while we were driving back from Mangalore, I was overtaking a trailer truck and suddenly there was this car right in front, coming in the opposite direction. By relex, I jammed on the brakes and I was bracing myself for the tyres to skid and lose control. But the car came to a perfect straight line halt within seconds, with tyres shrieking and the smell of burnt rubber lingering on as testimony to how well the brakes worked at that moment of emergency.

My confidence in the Corsa rose many notches after that eventful, but fortunate evening. From then on, I could rest assured when my wife drives it daily to office. She is quite a car enthusiast and a lover of speed and thrills. For drivers like her, Corsa is the next best car to be in, this side of a Volvo S80.

On the negatives, mileage is quite low, i get close to 9kpl on the stop-and-go traffic in Bangalore city. However, on a recent drive to Hogenekkal Falls, 180km south of Bangalore, I got a mileage of close to 16kpl.

After Opel was phased out by GM, the resale value has sufferred. Maintenance is also quite expensive. I have had to take it to the service centre on many occassions. Once the distributor in the ignition system conked off. Then there was a leak in the cooling system and the engine would get overheated. Recently, the gear bush got worn off and the 5th and reverse gears would not engage.

I found out a store in JC road, Bangalore called General Motors which sells spare parts of Corsa. Now, instead of letting the service station buy spares, I buy the spares and get it changed when I need it. That saves quite a bit of cost.

Given the choices of mid-sized car I had in 2004, in hind-sight I would definitely say that I made the right choice by going  in for the Corsa. Today the customer is spoilt for choice in this segment, but I would still stick with my Corsa for at least a couple of years more before I start scouting around for a new car.

I have been owning an Opel corsa 1.4 since 2001. I agree to this review, everyword of it. There is still no eligible replacement in the current market. BTW there are ways one can improve the mileage by at least another km to the litre. I still have no clue why GM discontinued this gem of a car rather than correcting their marketing approach. Of course the latest issue is that Garuda has closed down and there is a waiting period of 25 days to get your service done in TVS!

  2. on 19 Feb, 2008 at 11:52 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Dear Anonymous,

Why GM discontinued the Corsa is something I also wonder about. MAybe they did not want two cars in their own stable competing against each other, and anyway the Corsa was not setting the sales chart on fire. Now the reason for that could be attributed to GM's step-motherly attitude to the technically brilliant Opel range of cars. In Europe, Opel is doing really well these days and it would really have been wonderful, had GM persisted with the brand in India, even at a premium

  3. on 19 Feb, 2008 at 11:55 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

... to continue, I too came to know about Garuda closing their GM dealership. That is sad, since Sundaram Motors was always bad when it came to quality of service. Now customers have no choice, but go to them!!

Absolutely agree with the reviewer. Opel Corsa ia a fantastic car. YOu should see the Opel Corsa 2008. Its fabulous. I hope GM gets it to India. i will be the first one to buy it. I know the resale value etc etc is down, but I cant think of a replacement for the Corsa.

    Zuber,

Spare parts and service availability should not be a concern in the near-to-mid-term future. There are enough opel cars plying the indian roads for GM to make profits out of selling Opel spares and servicing Opel cars.

Used Corsas can be bought at good bargains these days. Just that you need to be careful while buying one, just as you would while buying any other used car.

    Pravin,

Thanks for the information, may i have the address of the parts dealer on JC road you mention

any other useful tips while driving a corsa?

  11. on 03 Jun, 2008 at 10:56 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Ashish,

You can call them at 080 2227 1302. Unfortunately I do not remember the exact location of the shop now.

Do make sure that you use the IFTEX Fuel additive everytime you fill up. It will prolong the life of your engine.

Hi, I need this group's advise on the following. I am planning to buy an used 2003 Opel Corsa SAIL 1.4 car in Bangalore. Vehicle is in good condition. Owner is asking for 1.4L price. What is your opinion? Is it a good deal? Is getting spare parts for Opel Corsa cars would be difficult?

    Please suggest. Thanks a lot.

    Hassan,

What is the mileage on the car? Has it run more than 75000-80000 KM?

1.4 lakhs for a 2003 Corsa Sail seems like a good bargain to me. I just checked the used-car valuation on the CarWale home page, and it gives a range starting from 1.7L - 1.5L.

As I suggested in one of my comments above, spares and service are not a problem in Bangalore. It is slightly on the expensive side though. Normal yearly service costs (consumables only, excluding spares) about 5000 for my Corsa 1.4 GSi.

  15. on 23 Jun, 2008 at 05:31 PM Hassan Shaik (Bangalore)

Hi Pravin, Many thanks for your reply. Mileage is just over 40,000km. And the seller is the first owner.

I called Sundaram Motors today (as they are doing service for GM/Opel cars in Bangalore). The customer care manager told me that normal spare parts will be available readily. If any spare parts are not available, it seems GM will arrange for them in a week maximum.

I hope the deal is OK. Please let me know.

    Regards.

    Hi Hassan,

Prima facie I would say that it is a very good deal if the papers and mechanical condition of the car can be authenticated/verified.

    All the best,
    Pravin

Hi, I have got a Opel Corsa 1.4 GSI model 2003-Sept. Mileage I'm getting is vey low, ie, about 7.5 to 8 kM per Litre in Bangalore City. Is it normal for Opel Corsa or can the mileage be improved ? and How ? Also, I'm planning to fit LPG kit for my Opel Corsa. Please give me your advise/comment on this. Thanks.

  18. on 09 Jul, 2008 at 03:09 PM Sud

Ashish, Tks. Acdg to Dars they can fit LPG kit for Corsa 1.4-GSI model 2003 but it can not be registered with RTO. DARS says its okay to use LPG without Regn with RTO. Do you hv any comment on this pls ? For service I was going to Garuda but last time I gave it to Sundaram (for 30K Kms. service). Now its 34K Kms & am thinking of Vijai Motors for nxt service (40K kms).Pls give me ur comments. Reg mileage, I'm getting only about 8 Km Per Ltr. Any advise to improve it ? Tks.

  19. on 09 Jul, 2008 at 03:56 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Hi Sud,

Mileage is very much dependent on one's driving style and also on the condition of the engine, the clutch, gear, the quality of fuel used etc.

Do you use the IFTEX additive everytime you fill up fuel? For the Corsa engine, this additive is essential. The engine could also be damaged (piston/cylinder getting worn off) if it is not used.

Also check your tyre pressure - make sure it is at 30 or 31. more pressure on the tyres can increase mileage. Also drive with your windows close

    Hi,

I bought a used Opel couple of months back and it has been driven for 60,000 kms. Its due for service, then I checked with Sundaram, Bangalore they quoted Rs. 13,000/- (without seeing the car) and Vijai said Rs. 5,000. I was surprised at Sundaram's quote. I heard Vijai is new, any suggestions of which one to go? Have anyone got it serviced, if yes how much it costed? Thnx in advance

    Sharan,

I would suggest you go to Vijai. I gave my car for service in Vijai last month. They did a good job. Sundaram has been atrociously bad in my experience.

The total cost of service as you know is dependent on what parts may need to be replaced, oiled, serviced etc. My Corsa is 4.5 yrs old and has done 45K. My yearly bill comes close to 6-8K if there are no parts to be replaced.

    Regards,
    Pravin

  23. on 26 Jul, 2008 at 10:35 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Sharan,

I would also suggest that if you have to replace any parts in your car and would want to save some costs, get the names of the parts to be replaced from the service centre and get those yourself from the General Motors store in JC Road. The margin of spare parts at the service centre is anywhere between 40 & 60%.

    Cheers,
    Pravin

    Pravin,

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked with Sundaram about the high cost for which they mentioned that @ 60,000 Kms servicing will require change of tensioners, belts, greecing, and regular service for which it cost Rs. 15,000.

Pls suggest. I will visit them.

Hi,I am a doctor doing PostGraduation in Hyderabad,Looking to buy an used car(1.2-1.5lacs).Dont have much time(or the money)to run around service stations.A friend of mine has sugested that I should look at the Corsa. It would be of great help if u could suggest as to what I should look for in an used Opel Corsa. There are 2 available in the market now-one is a 2000,1.4 gls and the other a 2001,1.4 gls with a gas conversion kit.both of them already second hand-I guess that would affect resale.

I have serviced in Vijay Automotors in Old madras road a couple of months back...the service is wonderful. you can expect politeness from the people who are there. For the people in working in ITPL, whitefield area it would be very easy to give and take. Nice service station

    Hi,
Just couple of days before, I had a deal with Opel Corsa 1.6 GLS. The model is 2005 ending and ran over 24000 kms. We've finalized for 1.75Lacs. Is it a good deal ? Just need some info also

    1. When it need servicing?

    2. How can we maintain this car

    3. Where I will get parts in Hyderabad if needed.

    4. What precautions we should take to get better results?

    5. How can we increase average of car?
    pls reply asap

  33. on 13 Nov, 2008 at 01:41 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Hi Raghukishore,

1.75L is a reasonable rate for a 2005 Corsa 1.6 in my view. Hope you have a pleasant time driving the car.

GM advices a service every 12 months. Since your car is less than 4 years old, you can still stick to this yearly service. I do a general check-up every 6 months and a full service every 12 months.

For maintenance, apart from the usual things that you would do to maintain any car, you need to use the fuel additive called IFTEX which you get from IBP Petrol bunks.

  34. on 13 Nov, 2008 at 01:45 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Continued...

IFTEX cleanses the fuel line, injector etc and it also makes the engine smooth. It is slightly costly (250/- per pack) but it is essential to ensure engine longevity.

I am not sure of specific places in Hyd where you would get spares, but it is best to go to the GM dealer of repute so that you get genuine spares.

As regards better results and average, be aware that Corsa is a heavy car at 1450kg. The body is built like a tank but this means you get low average...

  35. on 13 Nov, 2008 at 01:48 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

    Continued...

I get around 9.5 in city and 15 on highway in my 2004 Corsa 1.4GSi. The 1.6 L engine should give you 8+ in city and around 13 in highway on the average. Of course you can get better average if you dont race or brake too hard, anticipate junctions and other blocks in advance and stop accelerating. But these are things you already would know and would do for any vehicle...

    Happy Driving,
    Pravin

Logicgopi: Apologize for the late response.

I agree with your comment on Vijai Motors. They are very polite and will hear you out. The Asst Manager (Works) Mr Thaja Husen is experienced and helpful. I have had a reasonably good experience going to Vijai Motors compared to Sundaram.

  37. on 13 Nov, 2008 at 01:55 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

Kamal: Apologize for the late reply. Did you already buy the 2000 Corsa? If you have not already, then I would suggest you rethink. If this vehicle has been repainted, it could well have been involved in accidents. Also problems in the suspension can be very expensive to fix. When you buy a car you dont only drive in the city, but you would take it out onto highways also. So think twice before investing in a car whose history is uncertain.

  38. on 13 Nov, 2008 at 02:01 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

Suseendran: Glad that this discussion board was of help. Hope you have a pleasant experience with the Corsa. Happy driving!

Sanjog: Thank you very much for your comments. I have had problems with the clutch plate too. I have not yet replaced it. About the heating, check the engine coolant level and also the functioning of the radiator and the fan. In my case there was a leak in the coolant system and I had to get it plugged and the fan also had to be replaced.

  39. on 13 Nov, 2008 at 02:04 PM Pravin Sree (Bangalore)

Raghav: Apologize for the delay. Have you already made the choice? If not I would suggest that you want for a slightly newer Corsa - one that is not more than 4-5 years old, as that would give you lesser headaches, provided its condition is still good.
