mid compact segment redefined !!! the luxuries & power of big cars now in compact cars. the new I-10 delievers on its promises.

our family owns 8 cars at present & we've owned most succesful compact cars like santro, indica, wagon -r, swift & now I-10. we've owned 2-3 models of each of the above cars. we've also had honda city zx & corolla. of all the mid-segmnt cars, we've felt santro very was best so far. indica had lots of maintainance costs & broke down quite oftn. swift guzzles up petrol like a army tank. wagon-r has little better fuel efficiency than santro but is very cramped for space & lacked driving pleasure with poor gear transmission. whereas santro had good space, powerful manoevuring for gd driving pleasure & a satisfactory fuel economy.

with I-10, evrythg's improved, the interiors r in class of big sedans, the new power steering & gear transmissn are just a little behind the honda's & corolla's. the car is spacious enf  for 5 person to sit comfortably evn whn the front seats r fully stretched back. the new engine is very smooth & noiseless. the ERA model has cost me 4,17,191 on road in ahmedabad. i got a loan for 3 lakhs for 3 yrs with 36 EMI of 9480 from HDFC being a preferred customer & an additional discount of 2000 for bookg thru them. i took 32% premium discount in insurance & 1500 voluntary discount for letting go claims below rs 5000. tht way the car cost me 4.59 lakhs with interest, process fees, insurace & RTO, without any accessories.

its premature to say abt mileage, coz the true mileage is chkd only aftr the first service, but i drove approx 265 kms in 21 litres of petrol with ac on, which works out to 12.5/ltr, considering highly congusted ahmedabad city driving & driving around by many members of the family. my santro gives me 11.5 in similar conditions. but ths car has tubeless tyres, new engine & after 1st service, i expect ths mileage to pick upto 14 somethg..hyundai has said its mileage is apprx 2 kms more than santro.

i hv covered most parts of my experience to give a indepth review. i m sure it will b very helpfull to everybody.

    Dear Amit
Thanks for the detailed report. It is nearly 2 months after ur initial review. What is ur experience now. And what about the mileage...has it improved

  4. on 12 Feb, 2008 at 01:11 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

    hi,
the car has been truly a pleasure to drive around & hs become a darling of evrybody at our family. evrybdy likes the cool interiors of the car. the mileage in heavy city traffic conditions without air conditioner is 14.

  5. on 20 Feb, 2008 at 10:40 PM Nitin Loomba (New Delhi)

hi amit , nice review i would say. Just one doubt ..the dashboard of the car in brown in colour..does that cause a reflection on the front mirror and cause problems...???

  6. on 21 Feb, 2008 at 12:20 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

hi nitin, thx for ur commnts, the interiors dont hv any reflctn as such & actually r cool & sombre to the eyes. also due to beige color, they get less hotter in summrs rathr thn grey & black colors.

  7. on 21 Feb, 2008 at 03:08 PM Pna-In

I HAVE BOOKED ONE YESTERDAY & i will get delivery tomo... Hi amit how is the mileage after first service.

    Hi Amit...
    This is Sudhakar from Pune...
Nice and useful detailed report... i am planning to buy the same in few weeks... What is ur experience on village road.. is it bumping... how is the supspensions... plesae comment... thanks!

  9. on 29 Feb, 2008 at 02:03 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

hi sudhakar, we havent taken the car to any village road yet. its 3100 kms now & the car is doin grt so far, we r all happy wth the decision to I-10. but the car is straong enough compared to all other mid segment cars, so it shuld do well evn on interior village roads.

    Hi Amit
I liked you review. Had a question about the rear seat folding in i10. I noticed it doesn't come down completely and has a slight incline. Is it still comforatable to place stuff without fear of it sliding down? The Santro does have double fold rear seat which provides a flat base but that wasn't done for the i10...maybe due to the design of the seats.

  11. on 06 Mar, 2008 at 11:30 AM Vikas Yadav (New Delhi)

    Hi Amit
first thanx for really great reviews....I wd like to know ur opinion about the looks and black color of i 10 ERA model, will it be okay to pick black color in i10 or any other color suits better? what u say

  12. on 06 Mar, 2008 at 06:27 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

Hi vikas, thx for the complmnts. delhi is pretty hot in summers, so black color car heats up more. so go for silver or white. also standard colors such as white, silver, light metallic colors give more resale value.

  13. on 09 Mar, 2008 at 11:40 AM Manish

    Hello Amit !
Its very useful to read the thread as I am planing to buy Mid sized car ( tho dream of Honda City in nights )

Anyways please throw some light on following points :

    1. Is AC effective and hows its performance as compared to other cars ?
    2. Which Model you prefer ( Era of Magum ) as per usibilty of the facilities provided. Are worth money.
    3. What are yours views regarding insurance cost and other expenses of spare parts and service cost as compared to Wagon R ?

  14. on 10 Mar, 2008 at 09:39 PM Manu (Ernakulam)

    Dear Amit,
thanks for the indepth and useful info.
How is the storage space as the rear seats dont fold as the getz and with the price revision is the magna better than the Era?

  15. on 11 Mar, 2008 at 10:17 AM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

    hi manish & manu !!

the ac is very efficient compared to wagon r & santro. swift's ac is a little better consdering its 1200 cc smthg. i prefered the era model since it has power steering, central locking & front power windows. they already have cool beige interiors. in higher versions, they r offering same color mirrors & handles, a wiper on the back side & rear power windows etc.. these r all luxuries which u wont use, whereas central lockg, power windows & power steering r thgs u'll want.

  16. on 11 Mar, 2008 at 10:21 AM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

so i took an era, u can decide how much u want to indulge, cause thers not much diff wth the engine & speicficatins. the storage space is similar compared to santro, may b a little more. among all our cars, santro gave the min maintainence trouble, hardly needing any mechanical repairs, thts y i love hyundai. service cost r all similar in all cars, apprx 600 rs for a regular service. manu, storage space may b a little better than santro.

  17. on 11 Mar, 2008 at 10:29 AM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

manish, era also has tilt steering, internal adjustable mirrors etc, so all comforts for a driver such as central lkg, frnt pwr windows, pwr steerg, body color bumpers, tilt sterg, internal adjustable mirrors on both sides r included. so rather than wasting ur money on metallic door locks, metllc mirror colors & wasted sun roofs, u can spend tht money to buy a bigger car tht will hv better engine, space, storage etc & get more resale value, such as honda city, swift diesel or hyundai verna

  18. on 17 Mar, 2008 at 05:37 PM Raju Ashar (Mumbai)

I have read and tried Spark. It has great road manners.
However, if you compare the space, i10 is definately better but it has a bumpy ride at the rear and its back is outlined on harsh turnings.

  19. on 22 Mar, 2008 at 07:36 PM Vishal

Hi Amit and all the other people around.By far, one of the most useful inputs people.Thanks. Well, I plan to buy the i10, my first vehicle. But am a bit confused. We are a family of four. The car would be used during weekdays, primarily in the city for not more than 20-25 kms a day and on weekends for long drive trips, which would be around 100-150 kms.I wonder how does the i10 perform on the highways and hill stations?I did check out the car, and found the boot space a bit cramped? Wat say peopl

  20. on 23 Mar, 2008 at 12:58 AM Acer

Vishal, the boot is a little smaller than the santro. but good enough to stored 2 medium luggage bags. The car is good for long drives. On mumbai-pune expressway, it gives around 15-16kmpl. And is very comfortable for 4 ppl. I havnt been to any hillstation in my new i10 but if u consider mumbai-pune's lonavla sloppy ghat area (not really that sloppy), the i10 goes just as smooth. i agree with amit shah. the magna has a few extra features that one can do away with to save around 25k & go for era

    Hi Amit,
Feel gud 2 see ur review. U written every thing and very honestly. Pls tell me after sale services and maintenance cost of i-10. I m planning to buy change my car. Presently i have M-800. Its give me 22kmpl on highway, what is the kmpl of i-10 in highway and city. How is A.C. and what r the other things..??

  22. on 04 Apr, 2008 at 04:22 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

hi vikas, thanks for ur complmnt. hyndai has vry gd servc netwrk all ovr major cities in india. so i nvt hv worried abt servc network. its over 3 months & so its hard to tell anythg abt maintainance. we dont hv much travellg on highways, so cant say abt its avg on highway. the A/c is v gd.

  23. on 11 Apr, 2008 at 02:52 PM Amish Thakkar (Mumbai)

Hi Amit, I am amish from Mumbai. it seems ur satisfied user of I10 by now. One confusion i still have is y many I10's are not seen on road as compared to Swift??? another thing is i am getting around 15K discount on I10 where as on swift there is no discount at all. I10 being new car there is a discount and I10 is new launch still providing handsome discount where as swift is almost 3 years in market and still no discount???

  24. on 11 Apr, 2008 at 04:36 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

    hi amish,

u might b confused, hyundai is offrg exchg bonus on I-10, tht means disc if u sell ur old car. i dnt agree tht thr arnt much I-10's on the road. In fact, i m myslf vry surprisd to c lots of I 10's on road here in a'bad.

swift diesel is more successful & proven & i've myslf advised few frnds who hv ovr 30 kms travel daily. forget discount, maruti dealers chg premuim for ready del in swift diesel.

  25. on 13 Apr, 2008 at 05:18 AM Mandeep Nihalani (Vasai)

    Hi Amit,
Really helpfull comments on i-10, it has clear a great deal of my confusions.

    Amish,
You are right even i noticed lesser i-10's on the road, but this could be cause Swift had become an obsession lately which i feel is already changing.
Hv enquired with a couple of i-10 users all are in love with it. So now even i may zero in on i-10 as our 1st family car.

  26. on 14 Apr, 2008 at 04:53 PM Ajay Tiwari (Baroda)

Amit. thanks for information. i went to see megna model, but i could know that stering is controlled hydraulically, and demands oil change in every 3 months. Is it true? do u hv any exp.

  27. on 25 Apr, 2008 at 05:28 PM Samit

    hi

i want to know if it would be ok to
get cng installed in i10. I would also like
to know about the engine noise at high speeds

  28. on 15 May, 2008 at 09:44 PM Nick

    Hi Amit.....

and all the others who have posted so far...!!

My names Nick and I live in England.

Just to let you know that we are expecting to take delivery of our i10 in 2 days time...!! And it will be one of the first i10's on the road in the UK.

We have slightly different models and colours to you, but from what i can make out we are getting the model with the sun-roof, alloy wheels and heated seats (it gets cold here in the winter...) and the colour is is sort of 'electric' bl

    Hi Amit,

I have been thinking of buying my first car and, with so many cars in the market, i have been terribly confused about the same. Was planning to zero down on i10. However, could not take a final call. But thanks to your detailed review and the comments above I am more than sure that i10-Era is gonna be my FIRST CAR.
Thanks a lot and Happy Driving.

    hey tulika,
thx for ur compliments, a first car means a lot to anybody, get the best kick out of ur new wheels..

ramesh, i have hardly driven either santro or i-10 at 130 km, i drive only at speeds i can control in any car. i hv driven honda city at 140, it too starts a bit rustling if u go beyond tht. if u can handle santro at 130, u dont need to worry abt the i-10, its more strong & sturdy. plz ask smbdy technical to compare the rear supsension features.

    happy driving to everybody !!!

    hi every one
i have just bought an I 10,15 days back and i have covered 4500 kms!!!i have tested it on every road, good to say that i have achieved 140 kms max speed on NH 4,over all a beautiful vehicle but i will tell u some demerits, the front wind shield gets reflection becoz of the bad inclination, and another problem is of power steering, some times it get stuck due to some internal problems, and next u will feel some noise "thud" if u in village roads, except these a good car to own

  35. on 22 Jun, 2008 at 12:32 AM 2Eeq Qweqweq (Mumbai)

    hey raqib
I 10 has the best safety features compared to any hatch back cars, the I 10 engine has got alluminium bar protection

    Hi all,
I have I10 era model since dec07 onwards, recently got puncher (no air) in one of the tyre. I have replaced the same with the spare one. As it is tubeless how to get it repaired any clue

    Hi All,
I have herad that new i-10 magna carries the inprovised kappa engine.the usual iRDE engine is now replaced by Kappa engine. so the question is by how much is the mileage improved with the new engine. Is it worth spending extra bucks for the new Kappa engine coz kappa is avaiable only in Magna whereas Era still carries iRDE engine.

  38. on 18 Jul, 2008 at 04:35 PM Abc Def (Gurgaon)

    Hi Avinash,
You are right i10 is now being offered with new 1.2L kappa engine which is DOHC (the earlier 1.1 IRDE is SOHC). It has got more power and a bit more fuel efficiency.... but the original 1.1L is not less then this and is already proven (in Santro)... so you can go for anyone you feel like and if you can stretch ur budget go for the latest one... moreover the new Kappa engine is EURO 5 compliant means very low emmission.

    Happy Driving.

    Cheers!!

hi.. amit.. i'm planning to buy i10... ur review was helpful..but if you tel me the average maintanance cost and the mielage in city it would be really helpful as your are using for more than six months...

  42. on 05 Aug, 2008 at 03:20 PM Amit Shah (Ahmedabad)

    hi,

the avg in city varies from 13 to 15, depends on how u handle it. there isnt much maintainance trouble at all.. i think with the new kappa engine, the mileage might be a little more.

if u drive 100 km daily, u better go for swift deisel version, if u r ready to spend extra, its a grt car. the extra investment u do on swift deisel will give u more resale value.

    hi amit,
thanks for ur valueable review, i've recently booked my i-10 era, infact, i've got a very gud deal where i got insurance, remote central locking, music system with mp3 and many other things absolutely free, n thats also in 3,73000/- approx. plus i relly liked the interiors of this car n it was really smooth on the run . so i feel that it is the best option available when compare with any others.

if u have daily run of over 30 kms & can afford to spend extra on swift diesel, go for it. U save a lot on the running costs and the money u invest extra over I-10 will be refunded during resale.

also swift diesel is a very good & strong car, smooth performance with the diesel engine..

    happy driving
