Atleast Tata is being gracious by not letting more than 3 lakh cars on the road per year.

Can you imagine what would happen if Tata resolved to let everyone who can come up with 1 lakh buy the car. We'd have as many Nanos as we have lakhpatis.

To own a Nano, one need not be lakhpati.  Lakhpatis buy bigger cars.

By definition a lakhpati is anyone who posesses more than 1 Lakh rupees.I don't think all lakhpatis have lakhs and lakhs.I'm talking about people come very close to not being lakhpatis, they will definitely buy this car.

The Nano should be a great car it is almost half the price of the Maruti 800. Even Mumbai cab drivers are planning to replace the traditional cab's with the Nano.

Half the price of the maruti 800 is very neat a price tag.Besides how long does it take to save up a lakh.

Instead of struggling with 4 people on 1 bike a family man would rather go in for a Nano.

Right, but that is the defination going by words.  In reality, lakhpati is one who has sufficient money (if not plenty).  Anyway, it hardly matter here

Nowadays Lakhpati is not a sufficient word to refer to people who are rich enough, Crorepati is the better word now.
