Bad news forum members ,  i went to marutis website and saw that they are not planning to launch a small car competing with the 1 lkah car from tata sooon !

Heres the article - http://www.marutisuzuki.com/No-Plans-to-Launch-Car-in-Sub-800-Cc-Maruti.aspx

The Hindu Business Line

New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has no immediate plans to launch a product in the sub-800 cc segment in the Indian market, but will focus on India playing a greater role in Suzukis global operations by producing a third of all Suzuki vehicles globally by 2010. The company also expects to finalise a location for setting up its pre-delivery inspection centre at a port in Gujarat to facilitate exports of its cars.We want to transport vehicles by rail road to the port, and will stop using the Nhava Sheva port for exports once this location is finalised, Mr Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director of MSIL, said, adding that they expected to have the facility in place by the year end.

Wait & see
Stating that MSIL was committed to launch at least one new model every year till 2010, Mr Nakanishi refused to be drawn into making any comments on meeting the challenge of the Rs 1-lakh car from Tata. While the company has no plans to introduce a sub-800 cc car, it is watching the car with keen interest. We will wait and see it, he said, adding, If they make a new market, I would say, Congratulations!

Cheers,

Sri

I somehow feel it would be difficult for Maruti or Bajaj or others to compete with Tata Nano.  Nano seems to be a very decent car for its price, has good looks, 21% more legroom than M800 (though otherwise shorter by 8%) & is fuel efficient too.

Thats the point, its not meant for you, or anyone who can afford the more quality cars - that is just not its target market.

Its meant for those who can just about upgrade from a scooter, annual family income around a couple of lacs.  These are the ones who want to stretch themselves and  yearn for a cheap frugal car - this is where the Nano will score.

Yes, it's not meant for Sri, you or me - it's for the middle service class segment of people .... and they are in majority.  Others could consider as 2nd car, especially for women (kitty party, shopping etc.), and we can have decent rickshaws as well
