Traffic Ethics – To Stop or Not?

Hi Bassee.. Really this is indeed a "too good" write up. I can read it any number of times and still i have the amused expression of a first-timer. I personally loved the Lucknow portion of it. In India rules are flouted openly by high & mighty netas, bureaucrats flaunting their red beacons and nobody gets punished, so general public has also started copying them. What is more galling that if you point out some body's mistake, he is prepared to smash your head, rather than feeling sorry. Democracy in India means 'freedom to do what ever you like.

As an NRI returning to India, this is one of the things that I have decided to do myself, every time I am at a signal. No matter what people think, no matter what happens. I WILL STOP AT A RED SIGNAL. Let's all start doing this. And for those who say "what difference can 1 person make" I would say "Just do it" and you'll see the difference.

I always wonder why this happens in India and not in US or Europe. One of the cause as per my knowledge is any one can get a driving liscence whether he knows how to drive.

Secondly, as somebody said rightly, Politicians (and their chelaas are the first persons to violate the rules.

Each one of us get troubled by these violations, still we do the same thing thinking why I should follow. Even if some one tryise to follow, others will shout "abe dikhta nahin kay, aaya bada rules palne walw"

I sometimes get afraid of driving the car on signal even if GREEN is for me because of fear that somebody will violate the signal and dash me

Only one solution as AJO suggested, don't think of others, start from self.

It's good to see that most of us share similar sentiments when it comes to the condition on our roads. Like AJO rightly pointed out, each one of us can stick to a principle and I am sure the combined outcome will definitely be a good first step forward. Thanks for all your comments... Nice article... traffic is getting real bad and its great to see someone point out the way ahead... lots will follow suit atleast responsible people will..

I wish the taxi (Cab) union taught all these principles to all taxi operators. Half our problem would be solved.

same thing in bangalore also. today when i was coming to office first time in my car, near the round-about the vehicles were moving very fastly, they were not at all slowing down.. with much difficulty i could take a right turn and zoomed out. god is great. now i have to go back to home . please god help me.

In Bombay, you will see lots of taxis (Sumos, Taveras) carrying a note in the rear glass, saying "If you find the driver not following traffic rules, kindly inform us on <some mobile number>". Despite of the note, I have come across several such drivers misbehaving on road. But I have yet to compain on one of such mobile numbers.

Mohan, just keep one thing in mind. "Don't panic. No matter what!" Avoid changing lanes. Nobody is going to hit you if you keep your cool and drive in your lane. When we are new at driving, we tend to hit others.
