I am debating on which one to buy among Fiesta, City, Accent, Baleno, Aveo. I am inclined more towards Fiesta/City. However folks say that the maintenance and spares cost of these cars is high when compared with that of Maruti cars. Can you compare in numbers the maintenance cost as well as spares cost of these cars with that of Maruti cars to give me some idea on how much I need to spend more if I go for a City/Fiesta.

Dear Daisy, They are saying the truth up to an extent. Maruti cars are really low at maintenance as compared to other major players in the industry and that is one of the reason behind the fact that Maruti is undisputed leader. Baleno's spares are considerably cheaper than other. In your list City comes at second from maintenance point of view and Fiesta/Aveo comes at last. Fiesta/Aveo will prove them high on maintenance just because of costly spares. If you are very much concerned about maintenance then decide between Baleno and City.

Thank you very much for the info. It helped me a lot in dropping Fiesta and Aveo from my list. I am more inclined towards City now, unless there is something strong that comes out of Baleno. City’s looks and fuel efficiency r good. Baleno comes frm Maruthi whose service and network in India is indisputably good. I would need little more information from you before making my mind. Can you please let me know what is the typical maintenance cost of City and Beleno per year, after the initial 20,000 kms. Also can u take an example of some of the spares that I might have to get often changed after 20,000 kms and cost of those spares for City and Baleno. Below r my priorities in choosing a mid-size sedan: Looks: 40% Fuel efficiency: 30% Maintenance and spares cost: 30% With my above priorities, and if u were me what would u chose. City or Baleno? Or will you suggest me any other car? Like Hyundai Verna. Do u suggest if I have to wait and see how Verna performs before buying one. I badly need advice before buying a car which I intend to use for long time.

Dear Daisy, Baleno is an amazing car, no doubt but sometimes we think its days are gone now, this car badly needs a change, a makeover at least! This is the only reason that would keep us from buying Baleno if we were to choose a car between Baleno and City. City on the other hand looks fresh, gives you a good, healthy feeling, fulfills maximum of your needs and becomes a highly desirable car. But before going ahead with Honda City we would like you to consider Hyundai Verna. We just had a test-drive of this car and it just thrilled us. What a car! We have never had any complaints against Hyundai regarding high maintenance/costly spares and all and its small cars and midsize cars have been doing pretty well. We always considered Accent a very good car but this Verna is far ahead of Accent. Verna is ahead of City too in many parameters, but yes there is one thing called brand-name that Honda has a lot today and it might keep City's sales higher for sometime. We still suggest you to take test-drive of both the cars i.e. Verna and City and finalize one. We are inclined towards Verna though.

Thanks again for your valuable advise. Dropping baleno frm my list..and left with city and verna. 2 questions about verna and hyundai: 1. How is the mileage of petrol verna with in the city limits. I drive around 50 kms per day and hence would require a fuel economy car. I am not very keen on diesel cars. 2. Resale valu of hyundai cars. Canu compare this with resale value of Honda cars.

Dear Daisy,

We too had a similar impression for diesel cars before the arrival of Hyundai Verna. We have been discouraging people with low running to buy diesel cars. The fundamental of going for diesel or petrol car is same here as well but the most significant change in the petrol/diesel car world is that Verna diesel is surprisingly better performer than its petrol counterpart. Its far superior at fuel economy as well. NVH factor is considerably low and it gives you a feeling of petrol car.

1. Mileage of petrol Verna would be around 11 kmpl and of diesel Verna would be around 14 kmpl.

2. Resale value of Hyundai cars are not as good as Honda cars. Honda cars are great at it, especially City.
