Stupid Question but I want to get an answer

Guys,

Im sorry to ask such a stupid question, but I would really like to know as to why bikes cannot have  a diesel engine as they do have a petrol engine and lpg/cng cylinders fitted.(Seen quite a few bikes with cylinder fitted)

Diesel engines are too heavy for bikes.  Royal Enfield (Bullet) did come with diesel engines for a short while - but was withdrawn (unsuccessful).  Local retrofitting was quite popular once upon a time (particularly in city-outskirts & villages) - but has vanished now - probably because LPG/CNG cylinders are more popular/feasible.

I remember seeing one such diesel bullet in my hometown (Maharashtra) --. This person was in milk business and he used to go deliver milk on diesel bullet. He never used to switch off the engine while delivering milk or even while stopping for 3 to 5 minutes. But these bullets used to give mileage of more than 70+ kmpl. But now I guess even Milkmen have stopped using them!Laughing

Oh wow. I mean dont ya think this is revolutionary technology. 70+kmpl...n guess what noone can either complain of the sound hehehehe!!!! :-p

Yes, it used to give mileage of 70 odd kms.  I have driven it - in city & highway, both - no driving pleasure at all.  Other than milkmen, it was quite popular with labour contractors & the like people.

As discussed before, it is no more popular - has vanished - due to introduction of LPG/CNG.

I don't think any other bike ever came with diesel - did it - any info?

The money you save on fuel could well be blown on your dentist's bills! The ride on those bike was so painful that you will ruin your back bones !

I do remember that starting diesel bullet was a pain! Back kick --

Rajdoot was very popular amongst milkmen but it was petrol.  Sujit is referring to Enfield/Bullet Diesel.

There was a diesel bike called 'Sooraj Diesel'. Auto India magazine had even reviewed it in one of their issues
(sorry, i dont remember the month/year)
It was simply an Royal Enfield with a retrofit engine assembled mostly in rural Maharashtra
It had green stripes on its tank and an oversized flywheel beside the engine.
