Ami,

I have always been apprehensive of subwoofers. I maybe stupid to think that bigger sub means lots of blurpy bass that will vibrate the car all over. And bigger sub also means the bass may outperform the music! But then this is what I feel and I maybe completely wrong.

Absolutely. Bigger sub-woofers are for car-abusers. Cars are not desiged for 300 db noise from inside.

On that note, please don't shoot anyone in your car without a silencer. The noise is not good for the car.

An SQ grade sub wont be that noisy or blurpy like you think.

Best solution here would be to listen to couple of options and then choose. In that case a need for upgrade can be avoided.

Arun,

Would you help me understand the following:

1. Despite of double dampening, the left front door is vibrating, especially at slightly higher volume and on a bassy song.

How are the speakers monted on the door? Ideally they should be mounted on an mdf ring. Sometimes, like on my fiesta the door panel does not give enough clearance behind it to be able to do this. In this case use the spacer rings that came with your comps. Wrap the spacer ring with strips of damping and then mount the speaker to the door panel with the spacer ring. It could also be something as simple as tightening the screws for the left speaker.

2. When we listen to a song as mentioned in point #1, the cabin lights (if on) flicker a bit. Flickering occurs when subwoofer kicks in (at peak bass). Pankaj says, it's fine as it happens only at high volumes and very bassy songs. Can be ignored!

This is happening because the amp is trying to draw more current than what its getting. Two common causes are weak battery and wrong gauge of power cable. You need at least a 4awg power cable. How old is the battery?

3. There is bass at very low volumes (3-5 level) but the overall music (including bass) sound very unexciting. Things start to sound better and inspiring when the volume level is turned to 9+.

What is the max volume level at the hu?

4. Do you have slightest of the feeling that the Eclipse EA4100 amplifier is not enough alone? And maybe we need a separate mono/2-ch amp for sub?

For now this is good. Your 8" sub would be rated at 250watts rms and 2ch's bridged on your amp would be giving it about 180rms which is fine.

5. Do you think we should upgrade the sub to 10-inch? There is enough tight bass but there is no thump/feel in the bass. It's very very plain!

YES upgrade to a 12". I think thats what I recommended in the first place. If you get the 12" then get a seperate mono amp and use the 4ch amp to bi amp your comps

6. My friend feels he needs speakers in the rear because the sound is not good enough for rear passengers. Pankaj suggests we get Morel Tempos in the rear as well as it will keep the sound signature identical. Earlier he had suggested Illusion Electras for the rear!

You dont need rears. I also feel your system needs to be tuned better
