If it just between the two, in my opinion verna D is a better buy (if you are fine with no airbags). You will get a powerful yet economical diesel in lesser price than honda city.

edit: did not see the above post while posting mine.

It is what we think we know already that often prevents us from learning.

Thanks for the reply .... so u suggest verna CRDi SX ?? any known issues with verna ??

I have heard about complaints regarding the rear suspension in Hyundai Verna....but thats long back about 1 and half years ago.... can't say what's d position now...

Thigh support for the passengers at the back is not adequate.

Frankly speaking I don’t like the fact that I have to go to a TATA showroom to get a fiat car serviced.

I will going for a test drive of Honda city on Sunday and will decide out of Verna and Honda city. Will see if I get a chance to drive linea as-well

Diesel engines will perform better than petrol version only when their turbo kicks in which is around 2000 rpm engine speed  for Verna CRDI.This means that Verna D will perform better only on a fast highway drive and in city you will be struggling for power which will not be forthcoming. As it appears you will be using the car mostly in city it is very important for you to get this fact right as I feel that people here are blindly recommending their own personal favourites which may not be considered choices and may not be the right ones for your situation.Be careful that it is your money and you will be stuck with wrong decision for long times. If you want power in city go for petrols,if you want power on fast highway both petrol and diesel will do.

I would suggest you to look at the choice differently.

If you have choice of petrol as well as diesel - example Verna or Linea - then the logic of recivering the extra cost over period applies. In case of SX4 or City, you do not have an option.  Hence first consider whether you are particualr about Petrol or Diesel. If you are not particular - now a days diesel cars are as good as are better than petorl in terms of maintenance.  If you are not particular about going for petorl, then you get a car on diesel like Linea or Verna around or below the price of City or SX4.  Now break the mental barrier that you need to run at least 50KMs per day if you buy a diesel.  That logic applies only if you want to look at "cost recovery" between same models.  Else you can completely consider a diesel model and go for it - with running and maintenance costs lesser than petrol.

Note that Linea gives an average of 14+ in City and 18+ on highway - I own one for last 5 months and I am very happy with the service too.  That you get at the price of City with less running and insurance costs.

As some one pointedout, for Swift you need to wait for turbo to kick in as it is fixed, but Linea has VGT and you find the driving good in city and highway.

Wanted to add another fact

Service frequency of Linea is 15000 KMs and spare parts are very reasonably priced - check in what car magazine I think March 2009 issue or at Fiat site itself to compare.

Huyndai is known for its service and frankly speaking I did not find any difference between Fiat and Hyundai.

Here again it is a choice you need to make - how much weightage you give to "taking fiat car to Tata for service".

Hi

Here is some info.

Verna

Owners liked

  • Outstanding diesel engine
  • Spacious and comfortable interiors
  • Absorbent ride quality at low speed
  • Splendid service backup

Owners disliked

  • Lack of character and road presence
  • Bland interiors
  • Boat-like ride & handling at high speed

The smaller yet significant things

  • ABS is a highly recommended option.
  • Adjustable steering boosts convenience.
  • Even 6 footers will not have a problem with space.
  • Chauffeur-driven owners stay happy with comfortable rear bench within the city. As the speedo climbs, the ride quality gets uncomfortably bouncy.
  • Gearbox is notchy and takes a little getting used to.
  • Stock headlights are inadequate. Need bulb upgrade.
  • Handbrake position is awkward.
  • Thin tyres need upsize.
  • Tyre noise is significant at speed.
  • 3 jet windscreen washer is effective.
  • Some owners suggesting dropping tyre pressure. Reduces “bounciness”.
  • Leave the steering and the Verna moves to the left. Improper camber.
  • Air-con is an absolute chiller.
  • Stock music system can play MP3 CD's. A big plus!
  • Power windows conveniently operate for 30 seconds after key is taken out.
  • Fuel Efficiency

    Diesel : 12.3 (City) / 16.6 (Highway)

    Upkeep Costs

    Average

    Overall Reliability

    Above average

    Problem Areas

ECU, Axle, gear sychroniser, clutch, alignment & fast tyre wear

    Resale Value

    Above average (Diesel)

    City

    Owners liked

    • Modern styling and design
    • Outright engine performance
    • Spacious well-designed interiors
    • Excellent ride quality
    • Honda reliability & durability

    Owners disliked

    • Cheap interior part quality
    • Sparse equipment list
    • Low on the value-for-money quotient
    • Lacks the quality of outgoing generation
    • Below average customer support

    The smaller yet significant things

  • Considering the low trim level, lack of outright quality & the high price, opinions rolled in that the City doesn’t offer good value for money.
  • A CD player is not standard; Honda's audio system has a built-in USB port as well as an AUX port. Good for the iPod generation, but not so for the less technically inclined. Jog dial helps you scroll through your MP3 song list.
  • Caution with your older generation iPods, they aren’t compatible.
  • Stereo sound quality is amongst the best from this segment.
  • Fuel tank is positioned below the front passenger seat. The sloping floorboard (which houses the fuel tank underneath) offers good support for the rear passengers feet. Will be a hindrance to the taller ones though.
  • Front seats offer excellent thigh support. The same on the back seat could have been better.
  • Doors open to a near 90 degree angle. Convenient.
  • Standard wheel caps give an alloy wheel look.
  • Real time fuel efficiency and distance to empty meter come handy.
  • Boot space is sufficient.
  • Rear seat doesn’t split a 60:40.
  • The center console's silver finish feels downright cheap! As does the quality of door panels.
  • The City shares its platform with the Honda Jazz hatchback.
  • High set parcel tray can restrict rear vision for shorter drivers.
  • Cabin has plentiful cubby holes & storage places. Big door pockets too. Very practical.
  • The revv-limiter cuts in abruptly at 7000 and will drop about 500 rpms when hit.
  • The speedometer's thick markings look a tad out of place. And when lit up, the orange illumination is too garish. Subtlety and a better choice of colour would have been nicer.
  • A taller person on the rear seat will have restricted head room, thanks to the sloping coupe like roofline.
  • Stock headlamps aren’t very effective. Bulb upgrade recommended.
  • Air-con is acceptable, but not an absolute chiller. Rear airducts are missing.
  • NVH levels are unimpressive. Road, engine & mechanical noise filter in easily. Suspension is noisy too.
  • 15 inch wheels are now the standard size. A definite step forward.
  • Lots of empty room in the engine bay. Coolant tank is weirdly positioned.
  • Double glovebox, a feature of the outgoing generation, is missing.
  • Great sedan. But not as practical as the outgoing 2003 – 2008 Honda City.
  • An 1100 kg kerb weight makes it the lightest amongst competitors. A full 100 kilos lesser than the Maruti SX4.
  • Nowhere as passionate as the 1st generation Honda City. Or the current Honda Civic. The Fiesta 1.6S is a far better choice for die-hard driving enthusiasts.
  • Fuel Efficiency

What is the city mileage of?

    Maruti Sx4
    New Honda City
    Hyundai Verna CRDi Sx

Diesel engines will perform better than petrol version only when their turbo kicks in which is around 2000 rpm engine speed  for Verna CRDI.This means that Verna D will perform better only on a fast highway drive and in city you will be struggling for power which will not be forthcoming. ........ .If you want power in city go for petrols,if you want power on fast highway both petrol and diesel will do.

As suggested by Nipun Bharti is it true that Diesel cars are only good for highways and fast driving? If that’s true then I think I should think about Honda city and sx4 as well.

I don’t want to end up buying a 8lacs+ car and feel weak on the city roads.

Can anyone add more to what Nipun Bharti said?

    SX4-8-9kmpl

    City-10-11kmpl

    Verna CRDi-12-14kmpl

All in the city with 100% AC.

About the useability of diesels in the city, or rather the apprehension about it-its not at all true. Equivalent diesel engines develop much higher torque at much lower RPM than their petrol counter parts.

Take any road tests and compare the roll on figures(real world performance figures) between comparable petrol and diesel cars-the diesels will fare much better
