Yes your are right! I had registered an account with that email id long back, though I never used it. Please delete that account and let me know if I need to send an email request to delete that account.
We have no mechanism to delete an account. It can only be disabled but in that case your email address used to register for that account cannot be used on the site anymore. I think you must continue your gmail account here. And let me check the problem as why emails are not getting through.
