I believe that the delay in transporting cars by road is not only due to the necessity of having to wait for a load of 4-5 cars.  This is certainly one important reason, but there are also delays at various check points because police are much stricter with checking vehicles and their papers. Obviously safety standards are different when transporting vehicles as compared to household items.  Knowing our country, there will inevitably be some short-cuts by the mover and bribes will have to change hands, and so on.

So I believe that even if one goes with the more costly option of moving car with household items, the end result will be that both will be delayed.

In my case the delay in the delivery of the car proved very costly. I had to pay Rs 400 to the auto driver for taking me to Nigdi (from Kondhwa, where I resided at that time)  to collect the car. I had to pay to get the car cleaned. And the delay of 3-4 days cost me something like Rs 150 per day in up-and-down auto fare to my work spot at Hadapsar.

The option mentioned by VahanPujari seems to make sense, if one has to move the car via road transport. Otherwise, as suggested, either drive the car or hire a driver. But one should be aware that there are pitfalls on our highways too. On a long drive like Bangalore-Kolkata,  the car's suspension and tyres might take a beating on bad stretches with potholes/speed-breakers/stones if sufficient care is not taken. So proper planning is necessary with the route thoroughly analyzed. If hiring a driver, go for one who has already done this route several times.

RK, Roadies like you should generally opt for driving on your own, than giving up the chance.

Also the self-driven transport will save on the tickets for the family, and add a great experience of the entire stretch of road. I would jump at the opportunity.

As far as familiarity of the road is concerned, if the road is researched well enough, and if some enquiries are made (offline, on the form etc), doing this properly should not be any issue at all.

Krishna, I do agree with you. If it were my decision today, I would unhesitatingly grab the opportunity to drive myself on the Bangalore-Kolkata route. The route would be new, but that would only make the drive more exciting. But Shankar has already expressed some hesitation in attempting this long drive. While not discouraging him, I thought it would only be prudent to advise him of possible pitfalls and suggested that he hire a driver if he thought that necessary.

I had one more experience of moving my M-800 car (1995 model, now sold) from Bangalore to Mumbai, maybe in the year 2002. I engaged a not-so-reputed mover, who loaded the car into a small van and sent it on its way. The move went through smoothly, but the mover informed me that the car had to be driven part of the way (I think in Maharashtra state) because of issues with border checkpost.

Another important item is that for Car transport there are dedicated car transporters & I figured its better to use them. These are tyopically guys who transport manufacturer new cars from plant to dealership. As they've always prescribed load, there is no delay of waiting for 4-5 cars to get togather to transport the same destination. Thats what I did when I wanted to sell off my Ford Ikon & sent it from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Didn't send it thro' Agarwal but sent it thro' one of those Car transporters.

[^^/quote^^]

I completely agree with vahan. We defence officers are experts in this field of shifting. We move after every 03 years or so and have got good experience in this field. Driving is definitely the best option like the Bangalore-pune route.  If you have no option always use the car transporters. Always de-link you luggage from your car. Either self drive or use exclusive car transporters. Recently i got my car from Delhi, in Bangalore on the 4th day.

Knowledgeable post for those who want to transport the car to various cities due to frequent work re-location. BTW Vahan pujari, can you update the name of the car transporters and the contact details so it will be helpful to everyone here.

Well i think Agarwal movers and packers is a well known name in the field of moving and packing service. They really provide good service that is why they have got so much name and fame all over India.

And if we talk about feedbacks on various sites, then it depends on the situations & conditions concerned with that particular client.
