Linea

Owners liked

  • Elegant styling
  • Solid build quality
  • Fuel-efficient diesel
  • Classy interiors
  • Brilliant handling & dynamics
  • High speed ride quality

Owners disliked

  • Lack of outright performance
  • Stiff low speed ride quality
  • Rear seat headroom
  • Fiat's inconsistent after sales

The smaller yet significant things

  • USB slot located in the glove box. Stock speakers are rubbish, very poor sound quality as you jack the volume up.
  • Linea is based on the Grande Punto hatchback. But you’d never know due to their individual styling.
  • Stretched wheel base rivals that of the VW Jetta!
  • Despite Fiat’s history in India, the Linea has started off with very respectable monthly sales figures.
  • Small niggles & rattles are standard fare. From day one of ownership.
  • Larger wheels would suit the Linea well. And fill up the flared wheel arches.
  • Dash multi-function display throws out data on fuel efficiency, distance to empty, temperature, service reminder, song played and even your phone SMSes.
  • Driver seating position is not the best. Takes effort to arrive at a good position.
  • Orange backlighting (of gauges) was loved by all.
  • Massive boot (500 litres). Loading area could have been wider though.
  • Headlamps are so obviously Maserati inspired.
  • NVH levels - at higher speed - are unimpressive. Good at lower speeds.
  • Dead pedal & adjustable armrest are nifty. Driver foot well is cramped though, and dead pedal angle takes some getting used to.
  • The Linea is one of the rare cars to have 4 quarter glasses (one at each cabin corner).
  • Seats are set a little on the lower side. Made of firm materials & not the soft type.
  • Lacks the split-folding rear seats of some of its competitors.
  • Even the wing mirrors are aesthetically pleasing. They could have been a size bigger (for better visibility).
  • Standard on all Fiats: A disproportionately loud (engine) cooling fan.
  • Door warning shows which door (in particular) is open, on the dash!
  • Switchgear + button quality on the inside is outstanding.
  • The Linea stays unfazed at speed over bad roads. Impressive.
  • European style control stalks: Indicators on the left and wipers on the right.
  • Cup holders too small. Ditto for the door pockets.
  • Big (under body) sump guard for protection.
  • Rear air-con has the capability to cool the feet of back seat passengers as well (under seat ducts on the top variant).
  • Light coloured interiors get soiled easily.
  • Hydraulic power steering weighs in well with speed.
  • Diesel revvs past 4,500 rpms!
  • Some plastic bits on the inside feel outright cheap.
  • Has a unique speed alarm. Customisable limit and will buzz once that speed is crossed.
  • Fuel Efficiency

    Fiesta

    Owners liked

    • Solid build quality
    • Competent range of engines
    • Superb ride and handling package
    • Driver-oriented nature
    • Fuel-efficiency of the 1.4 diesel

    Owners disliked

    • Cramped interiors
    • Small niggling issues
    • Lack of power from the 1.4 diesel

    The smaller yet significant things

  • Horrible quality rubber lining and low plastic quality.
  • Ford made a bad choice with offering standard MRF tyres. Change upon delivery.
  • Chunky steering wheel is great to hold and to use.
  • When loaded, underbody frequently scrapes the road / speedbreakers.
  • The headlights are exceptionally bright and very effective.
  • Road noise is prominent on the inside.
  • Stock audio system churns out decent sound quality. Double-din units are MP3 compatible.
  • Nifty touches like a damped ashtray, a single cup-holder which expands into two, illuminated glovebox and more.
  • DTE (Distance to empty) meter very handy. Ditto for the outside temperature display.
  • The air-con, though chilling, has a noisy blower.
  • Bonnet opener is inconveniently placed on the left side.
  • Lots of cubby holes on the inside boost practicality.
  • Still not as exciting to drive as the Ikon.
  • Drilled type pedals are delicious!
  • Some commented that the driver's seat could have been positioned higher.
  • The exhaust tail-pipe is neatly concealed from view.
  • Fuel Efficiency

    Verna

    Owners liked

    • Outstanding diesel engine
    • Spacious and comfortable interiors
    • Absorbent ride quality at low speed
    • Splendid service backup

    Owners disliked

    • Lack of character and road presence
    • Boat-like ride & handling at high speed

    The smaller yet significant things

  • ABS is a highly recommended option.
  • Adjustable steering boosts convenience.
  • Even 6 footers will not have a problem with space.
  • Chauffeur-driven owners stay happy with comfortable rear bench within the city. As the speedo climbs, the ride quality gets uncomfortably bouncy.
  • Gearbox is notchy and takes a little getting used to.
  • Stock headlights are inadequate. Need bulb upgrade.
  • Handbrake position is awkward.
  • Thin tyres need upsize.
  • Tyre noise is significant at speed.
  • 3 jet windscreen washer is effective.
  • Some owners suggesting dropping tyre pressure. Reduces “bounciness”.
  • Leave the steering and the Verna moves to the left. Improper camber.
  • Air-con is an absolute chiller.
  • Stock music system can play MP3 CD's. A big plus!
  • Power windows conveniently operate for 30 seconds after key is taken out.

    Xylo

    Owners liked

    • Value-driven price tag
    • Competent diesel engine
    • Spacious interiors & comfortable seats
    • Ride quality within the city
    • Rugged nature. Built to withstand abuse

    Owners disliked

    • Oddball looks
    • Highway ride quality
    • Unsorted dynamics & handling

    The smaller yet significant things

  • A genuine 7 seater MUV.
  • If it helps, some owners insist that the looks grow on you and the Xylo doesn’t look as bad in person.
  • Front passenger seat can fold down to make the middle-row a business-class like chair (captain seat variants). Supremely comfortable!
  • Engine has an excellent lugging ability. Even with all passengers onboard.
  • The lousy plastic quality stands out in otherwise neat interiors.
  • High stance of the seats makes ingress & egress difficult for the elderly. One literally has to “climb” into the Xylo.
  • Poor NVH levels. Also, wind noise noticeably filters in at speed.
  • Flight trays behind the front seats (for middle-row passengers) are unique.
  • Thoughtful glove box below the driver’s seat. Lockable too. Can hold a regular size laptop.
  • OEM stereo system is neatly integrated. Sound quality is strictly average.
  • Negligible boot space with all seats up. However, medium sized bags can easily be stowed away under the seats. After-market roof carriers, anyone?
  • Impressive level of standard equipment (relative to the competition).
  • Trip meter has the ability to show distance travelled / time idled with the air-con on! Tour operators rejoice.
  • All three rows get their own air-con vents, pretty effective cooling.
  • Driver’s seat armrest is ergonomically very poor.
  • Middle row gets back recline adjustment. No option to slide front or back though.
  • Double-din OEM stereo has an aux-input for your iPod, and is USB ready too.
  • Interiors have lots of cubby-holes & storage places for the knick knacks. Glove box too small though.
  • Flat floor reeks of sensible interior packaging.
  • Clutch is surprisingly light. Gear knob design is terrible to use. Dead pedal a bonus on long drives.
  • Tight turning radius is a boon within the city.
  • The rear-view mirror houses the parking sensor display (a la Scorpio).
  • High speed wallowing is an annoyance. Even on flat roads.
  • Soft suspension results in brake dive.
  • Steering wheel is intentionally firm. Good on the highway, though a tad heavy at parking speeds.
  • Driver’s seat is height adjustable, but not when you are sitting on it. Get off, adjust and then climb back on.
  • Grab handles are of an XL size.
  • Rear door not a hatch (like the Innova).
  • Importantly, even the third-row seat is front facing (unlike the inconvenient side placement in some of its competitors).
  • High speed warning chime! Has to be a first in India. Customizable limit.
  • Intercooler is positioned on top of the engine.
  • Last row seats fold away for additional cargo space, though not completely. Cannot be removed either.
  • Last row windows can be partially opened (butterfly latch). Better than some competitors who come with fixed glasses.
  • Inbuilt battery protection switches off all lights after being parked for a long time.
  • Fuel Efficiency

    Scorpio

    Owners liked

    • Butch styling and presence
    • Outstanding diesel engine
    • Robust build quality. Abuse-friendly nature
    • Light & easy to drive in city
    • Cheap cost of ownership

    Owners disliked

    • Cramped interiors
    • Unsorted ride and handling
    • Poor fit / finish levels

    The smaller yet significant things

  • Small glove box lacks practicality.
  • Stock wheel cap design is good and almost passes off as alloys!
  • Passengers complain of a "wafty" light feeling at speed.
  • Engine noise level is well controlled on the inside.
  • Firm long gearshift takes getting used to.
  • Some ergonomics are horribly messed up.
  • Lack of roof-mounted vents for the air-con is a drawback.
  • Air-con vents offer limited adjustment.
  • Middle row is adjustable for length and recline.
  • Big mirrors offer good visibility.
  • Middle-row seat is prone to rattling.
  • In true Mahindra tradition, large potholes hardly deter the Scorpio.
  • Fuel Efficiency

    Safari

    Owners liked

    • Macho size and presence
    • Competent 2.2 common-rail engine
    • Enormous interior space and magic ride
    • Generous equipment levels
    • Ability to take abuse

    Owners disliked

    • Dismal fit and finish
    • Poor handling capabilities
    • Constant niggling issues
    • Inconsistent after-sales

    The smaller yet significant things

  • Unbeatable long distance cruiser. Class-leading comfort and space.
  • Effective air-con, surprisingly, cools huge cabin in a short while.
  • Tyres wear out soon.
  • Optional 4 year warranty is highly recommended.
  • Rear visibility is poor and makes reversing a pain.
  • Huge turning circle makes matters difficult in the city.
  • Third row is best suited to small children.
  • Rattling tail-gate is standard.
  • Humungous cargo space. Can eat luggage.
  • Upgrading headlight bulbs, wiper blades and horn highly recommended.
