SX4

Owners liked

  • Value-driven pricing
  • Solid build quality
  • Competent petrol engine
  • Safety features on offer
  • Comfortable and well-spec'ed interiors
  • Fantastic Maruti service

Owners disliked

  • Lack of overall quality
  • Compromised fit and finish
  • Low refinement levels
  • Rear seat center-hump
  • Firm ride quality at low speeds

The smaller yet significant things

  • Thick A-pillar hampers visibility.
  • Much taller in person than it’s pictures would suggest.
  • Cabin is not well-insulated. Suspension noise, horn & engine all audible inside.
  • Huge ground clearance is a bonus for broken Indian roads.
  • Easy ingress and egress due to high stance.
  • Large boot space is impressive.
  • 6 speaker sound system sounds only average due to weak MGA speakers.
  • High boot can hamper visibility whilst reversing.
  • Few owners complained that the reverse gear is hesitant to engage.
  • In some cars, loosely fitted parts fell off (switches, handles etc.)!
  • Decent storage space for the knicks & knacks. Door bottle holder is cool.
  • Headlamps are weak. Bulb upgrade recommended
  • Fuel Efficiency

    10.4 (City) / 14.8 (Highway)

    Upkeep Costs

    Average

    Overall Reliability

    Good

    Problem Areas

Rattles, clutch, third gear vibration, alignment, small niggling issues

    Resale Value

    Good

    Linea

    Owners liked

    • Elegant styling
    • Solid build quality
    • Fuel-efficient diesel
    • Classy interiors
    • Brilliant handling & dynamics
    • High speed ride quality

    Owners disliked

    • Lack of outright performance (either engine)
    • Stiff low speed ride quality
    • Rear seat headroom
    • Fiat's inconsistent after sales

    The smaller yet significant things

  • Linea is based on the Grande Punto hatchback. But you’d never know due to their individual styling.
  • Stretched wheel base rivals that of the VW Jetta!
  • Despite Fiat’s history in India, the Linea has started off with very respectable monthly sales figures.
  • Small niggles & rattles are standard fare. From day one of ownership.
  • Larger wheels would suit the Linea well. And fill up the flared wheel arches.
  • Dash multi-function display throws out data on fuel efficiency, distance to empty, temperature, service reminder, song played and even your phone SMSes.
  • Driver seating position is not the best. Takes effort to arrive at a good position.
  • Orange backlighting (of gauges) was loved by all.
  • Massive boot (500 litres). Loading area could have been wider though.
  • Headlamps are so obviously Maserati inspired.
  • NVH levels - at higher speed - are unimpressive. Good at lower speeds.
  • Dead pedal & adjustable armrest are nifty. Driver foot well is cramped though, and dead pedal angle takes some getting used to.
  • The Linea is one of the rare cars to have 4 quarter glasses (one at each cabin corner).
  • Seats are set a little on the lower side. Made of firm materials & not the soft type.
  • Lacks the split-folding rear seats of some of its competitors.
  • Even the wing mirrors are aesthetically pleasing. They could have been a size bigger (for better visibility).
  • Standard on all Fiats: A disproportionately loud (engine) cooling fan.
  • Door warning shows which door (in particular) is open, on the dash!
  • Switchgear + button quality on the inside is outstanding.
  • The Linea stays unfazed at speed over bad roads. Impressive.
  • European style control stalks: Indicators on the left and wipers on the right.
  • Cup holders too small. Ditto for the door pockets.
  • Big (under body) sump guard for protection.
  • Rear air-con has the capability to cool the feet of back seat passengers as well (under seat ducts on the top variant).
  • Light coloured interiors get soiled easily.
  • Hydraulic power steering weighs in well with speed.
  • Some plastic bits on the inside feel outright cheap.
  • Has a unique speed alarm. Customisable limit and will buzz once that speed is crossed.
  • Fuel Efficiency

    9.9 (City) / 13.5 (Highway)

Thanks Bhardwaj / Mayank.  I checked the price for SX4 and Fiesta (I am not interested in Linea).  Ford Fiesta (Petrol 1.6 Limited Edition) is being priced at Rs. 6.2 L (on road Thane registration) which I feel is value for money with all basic functionalities inlcuded, expcept ABS (will miss), Alloy wheels and Airbags and SX4 would cost approx. Rs. 7.1 L (on road).  So is it worth buying an SX4 (paying aditional 1L)?  The resale value for SX4 is definitely good but I am paying 1 Lac less initially.  Also I got to know that the Ford has improved the after sales service and the parts also cost less as compared to what it was couple of years back.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi

Being a ford fiesta Tdci for 5 th year running ford has definetly improved its service and has also low parts cost.

I am so impressed that i dont feel like giving my fiesta in any other workshop.I only give it to my ford workshop only.

If can extend ur budget by 1lakh then buy a diesel.

In your budget Fiesta & Aveo are suitable. Fiesta is driver's car  . ASS is also improved a lot. Aveo is for sedate driving. But it has got the best interiors & spacein its class. Also more refined than SX4. ASS is also not bad. SX4 is out of your budget otherwise nice overall package.

I am also using Fiesta TDCi and covered 46k till date and Ford's A.S.S. is too good. Car is gem and in Ride & Handling, Fiesta is the best.

Aveo is overall a VFM like other GM cars and no doubt when it comes to interiors Aveo is the best. Looks are personal and though I own a Fiesta, I like the looks of Aveo.

Ford will bring new model Fiesta early next year in order to catch up with much better competetion ie SX4 and now Linea.Present Fiesta is small esp.back seat where its seat is smaller than even Getz.So if you want to buy a Fiesta, better wait till Jan.2010.Else,buy SX4 which is the best of the lot in space, size, drive, milage, power etc and is feature packed newer model.

I test drove both Fiesta Limited Edition and SX4 (Vxi) last weekend.  Both cars are good but I liked Fiesta's handling, safety features, comfort and of course price.  SX4 has got comfort, good boot space, ground clearance.  Now am confused between these 2.  Ford's resale is bad and parts are expensive compared to SX4, ASS is also an issue.  Price difference is approx. 70K so please suggest which should I go for?

Test drive is the best bet amongst all this literature crap.

You are absolutely correct - the Fiesta does handle better than Sx4 in city drives.Actually as you would have noticed, the power steering on a ford is set up relatively stiff vs SX4 and the steering wheel is also smaller- this makes you feel more precise when you are committing yourself into a turn.Howvever,on hilly drives you would need slightly stronger triceps & forearms to cope with a Ford.

The safety features of SX4 & Fiesta are very comparable with side impact beams and crash crumple zones as per Indian automotive standards. Both discussed models come without airbags and ABS,so it only boils down to structural integrity. This is where boththe cars would rate equal.

Personally,I found the SX4 to be much better overall package:

Awesome power delivery, better gear ratios, higher ground clearance, broader wheels for gobbling up potholed roads & to top it all - best A.S.Service & resale!

On the cosmetic side- Sx4 is definately a show stopper in its price range.Fiesta on the other hands has very dated looks of an 1980 european car, a very common issue with Ford low price range cars.I love Ford only for its real masterpices in India - Mondeo & Endeavour !

Let me say this - You have selected both very good cars in their specific price ranges!

Everyone has their favourites.Junk all third party opinions at this shortlisted stage & buy the car that YOU liked while test driving.Driving pleasure is prime & other factors now are secondary.

    Good Luck!
