What i feel that build quality of a car is most important in case of accident. All Maruti cars or rather all Japanes & Koreans cars are legging behind to their European rivals in that respect. If you observe carefully inside the bonnet of Swift & Fabia , you will quickly realise the difference . Even old honda city had a very poor records with respect to accident .

Basically it is a difference of philosophy , East Vs West.

I will Second you here, Very True! Infact I am a Fan of Ford because of Build quality. I have seen many Ford Cars after accidents and may be a Co-incidence but everyone survived. Ikon & Fiesta, both are very strong. I clicked few pics of Accidents Fiesta's & Ikon's and I was amazed that Cabin was safe. Infact, Palio too is very good in build quality.

Drive Maruti & Other cars, very good and these days you will find Safety Featurs like Airbags & ABS too but if you cant afford additional safety features dont think Car is strong.

Well, if you want to purchase a car on reliability, id go for the ford ikon. I recently read a review on the cross country drive that ford did with its ikon. Was pretty good to know that the car managed to take so much stress (in distance) without any breakdowns or any issues. Besides reliability, i think the ford ikon has much superior handling and power. Good looks 2

IKON tdci ( on road price Rs 630000 ) in BANGALORE

MY OLD CAR HAD CRASH DUE LACK OF BREAKING (  ie SWIFT VDI 18MONTHS OLD )

Slightly off topic, could you please elaborate how the brakes failed? If 18 months old, the car should have been under warranty , if there was a manufacturing defect.

The swift is known for it's good braking abilities, this has to be a one-off case.

And the Ikon TDCI is priced at approx 7.2 lacs OTR bangalore, not 6.3 lacs.

nice post rajiv. i felt that my ford was very strong and powerful as well. i guess ford goes through rigorous testing of their cars in case of accidents. since the pickup of the car and its handling is exceptional, it further makes it critical that they car passes all crash tests and im sure ford has done an excellent job in this category Not that i plan to, but if i ever crash mine, ill post a photo here :P

IMHO you shouldnt even be thinking in terms of the Palio in this day and age - why would anyone buy a brand new Palio from a showroom?

If you insist on making a choice between these two, go for the Ikon TDCi with your eyes closed - you will not regret it.

If you still think the Palio makes sense, then here's wishing you good luck - our prayers will be with you.

Keep those wheels turning!

The Palio has an uncertain future. With plumetting sales, talks of a new/facelifted palio in 2010, the palio competeing with the Indica Qudrajet, and the focus of Fiat being punto/linea - the palio is not a good buy at this point of time.

You may consider buying a punto instead if you are keen on a fiat.
