hi honorable advisers,

i am planning to change my stock tyres with new ones.

the current size is 165/80 R14 85 S

& the current reading on odo is 2100 km.

1. will i get good exchange rate for stock tyres after running them 2100km?

I want to extent tyre width to 195mm. Will I have to upsize my wheel size to R15 (15") as

with 195/70 R14 clearence difference = 4mm 1%

with 195/60 R15       "             "         = -2.3mm 0%

what will wheel upsizing affect? (ride quality, FE, ......)

how much amt will i have to pay extra for 15"?

pls mention the expenses for above upsizings. (14", 15", & with 185/70 R14)

which brand(tyres & alloys) should i opt for?

1) the exchange on the tyre will be quite low.

Have a look at this thread for some insight into brands/upsizing and alloys.

Alloys will cost about 16-20K for 15 inch size.

The tyre will fetch about 500/- each.

this Rs 500 is for only tyre or tyre + rim?

cost for 14'' alloys?

Avoid quoting directly preceding posts-MODS

Can I fit 185/70R14 tyre in my 14x5J stock rims or these have to be fitted on wider wheels (5.5j or 6j) ?

I have seen a swift having 185 tyres on rims. Will it be safe (any advantages/disadvantages)?

stock size = 165/80R14

what are the prices of different brands for 185/70r14 tyres?

Prabhjot, the difference in stock and wider tyre width is only 20mm. I think you can safely reuse the rims.

Dunno about tyre prices - others can help in this department.

Manoj, for an average user, there are very few practical (that too questionable) benefits of upgrading tyres - better grip and cornering, better handling and a smoother ride (wider tyres average out the road variations to some extent).

In my opinion none of these benefits justify the upgradation cost. It is criminal in my opinion to throw away the perfectly good tyres (and rims when upgrading to alloys) having run just 1 or 2 k km - one does not recover the cost of just one upgrade tyre trading in all 4 / 5 stock tyres, and not very infrequently, people experience problems because of wrong fitment, wrong choice (wrong offset) of alloys, etc. etc...

But there are people who swear by upgrading, and our expert Binoy Thomas insists that upgrades are useful for Swift/Dzire, as the stock tyres on them are underspecc'ed.

On the other extreme of the spectrum, We all see occasionally see a MS 800 or Alto sporting grotesquely wide tyres sticking out of its wheel wells - I totally gross out at the sight, and so would several others on this forum...

Bottomline - questionalble benefit from a huge expenditure - ~15k in all that can be very well spent for some other accessories.
