Gaurav-the FZ28 is one of the all time Prosumer greats-cant go wrong with that.

But the concern is the price range-the cost of the same would be 20K in the grey market. At that range i would advice you to get the Nikon D40x or the Canon D400 d-SLR's. Except for the video capabilities these cameras will destroy the FZ28(or for that matter the FZ38) in image quality.

Another reason would be that in 3 years the FZ28 would be worth 5K while the d-SLR's will still fetch more than 10K.

Besides the d-SLR's will give amazing low light performance and the option for upgrading the lens also-thus helping you grow as a Photographer.

my 2 cents

Oh- about the Photoshop here-its done click here.

I too second Binoy. Once you start using DSLR you will not like to go back to P&S.

Also as you have enthusiasm in photography, DSLR is the answer--compact cannot match its versatality. Considering the price range of the cam you are about to purchase, you can very well get the models mentioned by Binoy in grey market( i am not sure Canon 400D is available in market now, but you can get 1000D).

Hope to study a lot from you in the photoshop thread.

There is a new Medium format d-SLR that has been released.

Hasselblad releases H4D-60

Seems to be the next step in digital technology.

Here are the specs.

60 Megapixel

True focus

Absolute position lock

Cost-17 lacs + !!!!

Who is Hasselblad?

This was taken using a Hasselbald(also most of the images from the moon).

This is Aldrin on the moon.

More info here

Ohh man, thats huge. Great one.

Well guys, I am again confused, I made up my mind for Nikon D3000 earlier, also Canon 450D is a good option, but I couldnt find that big difference in their picture quality as compared to Panasonic FZ28. Price difference is around 15 to 20 k and also in FZ28 I am getting HD video recording at 1280x720 resolution and ofcourse optical zoom upto 18x. Please consider all the facts and help me out.

There is a new model FZ35 also in India but guess its picture quality is not good compared to FZ28 considering its CCD size that is same as of FZ28 but its 12.5 MP compared to FZ28's 10.1 MP.

Unfortunately, Panasonic FZ models are not available in panasonic official stores. Guess I have to check with the grey market.

Here's a trustable review for FZ28

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0807/08072104panasonicfz28.asp

But, it totally depends on you to choose a high-end point&shoot or an SLR, SLRs are costly and they don't settle at one single price as how you get a point&shoot... meaning, you'll be attracted to all kinds of lens and accessories an SLR would have

This is what happened to me, I got a Olympus FE180 in 2006, Sony DSC H5 in 2007 after little learnings on both the cameras, I bought Canon Rebel XT in 2008, I have & use the other 2 cameras along with my SLR... I consider this as a learning curve

Again, its up to you to choose your Camera, considering the quality, cost and importantly 'Interest on Photography'

How can I miss a thread like this! Amazing stuff guys, especially Binoy, Feroz, Muthu and Arun (pardon me if I missed someone!).

I too have a dSLR, the most basic D40 with kit lens and no accessories except for a decent carry bag (the one that looks like Frenchie!). Got it for 21k more than a year ago. Must have clicked a few thousand photos so far with it but 99.9% are friends and family!

I like night and macro photography but have no stuff to support it. Without a tripod, night photography is impossible. Haven't got out much and hence no attempt at micro-photography either.

I had created a Flickr account after I bought the D40 and had uploaded two photos. Those are the only photos worth showing-off (it will tell you my level of photography)! Moreover, since Binoy has redefined the word "Initial", I can't even use that!

Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai. Around 8pm.

Same hotel but picture taken around 1 hour ago than the previous one.

I had photoshopped both the images to enhance a bit sharpness and contrast. Nothing else.

This is the last time I had actually took my camera out to click photos!

Hey Banwari, this is too good for the word Initial. Pics are really nice, and you have a sense of Creative Angle as well. Way to go mate.

This seems like an appropriate thread to ask this question.

I am afraid this is not the right thread. You are about to hijack it.

I have moved your question to a new thread. Guys answer it: Good digital camera for still photography and video?

OT: I am sure we will need a sub-forum for photography soon!

Ban the pictures are great-especially the first one.

For your interests in photography a tripod is essential-get a basic Manfrotto.

Which Manfrotto do you suggest? I mean how basic? I somehow found out that Manfrotto 718B is one of the cheapest they have (around Rs.5,500). Is it good enough? Or do you suggest something else? How do we find out that a tripod is good or bad? By its weight-capacity or length or verstality or all? Lol.

How is the Veblon one you have right now? I also came across another brand called Vivicam, it's pretty cheap. 2000 rupees for their top of the line tripod!

Do you think a Mini Tripod makes sense? Something like this? Or are they just show-biz?
