hi there i own a corolla and i have a bass tube along with a sony 4 channel amp but i want to upgrade it,

i am planing to install new rear speakers and also two subs,so for the subs i am going with the jbl and the monoblock will also be of jbl driving my 1 bass tube and two subs bt the main problem and confusion for me are the rear speakers i am changing my tray as i want 4 speakers so according to you which  gives the best bass, punch and clarity the jbl gto947 or the polk db691 i am also consedring the jbl t696 or jbl p693 or the polk momo 691..........but i have been told tht momo and the power and gti series are waste of money so i am tending towards polk db691 or jbl gto947 pl if any 1 could help me out it would be great and ya the budget is 35K or maybe 40K.....

thanks regards

cheers!!!!

hi vaibhav,

Since you are looking to upgrade here is what I would suggest.

1. Get rid of the bass tube and the sony 4ch amp. I dont know how much you'll get for it but lets assume you would get 4k

2. Get 1 12" sub in a sealed enclosure and get a mono block amp to drive the sub. We're looking at about 18k here. For the sub you can look at cdt, polk mm series, high end pio's etc. These are good SQ subs. Stay away from the loud and noisy SPL stuff like kicker etc.

2. You have'nt mentioned what your running in front so I will assume you are running stock speakers, i.e. speakers that came with the car. Change the fronts to good components. Polk mm6501, genesis, mid level focals, rainbows etc. This would be around 15k.

3. Get your front doors deadened using stuff like dynamat. This makes the front comps clearer and adds a bit of punch to the sound. This would be around 4k

4. Get a good 4ch amp. Again you can look at Polk, kicker, audison and higher end jbl. About 20k.

Total cost about 53K after accounting for your return of sony amp and bass tube. Dont put anything at the back yet. Rear speakers just pull the soundstage backwards, apart from causing cancellation issues and loss of audio clarity. If you must run rears, stay with what you have and just run them off the hu. What head unit are you using? Is it the stock one or an after market unit?

After you have set this up and listened to it for sometime if you still want to add rears you can add the MM691, which in my opinion is the best 6x9 avalable in the market, bar none.

I run a complete polk setup except the hu. Polk makes three series for car audio. The db series is the entry level, the mm/momo series is the mid level and the signature reference (SR) is the top end. I run the mm/momo eries and the sound quality is excellent.

Nicely written Arun.

@Vaibhav:

I would say put a normal db691 or jbl947 for the rears or better dont keep any. Use that money for better cables or in any other department.

Dont forget to add a bass vent at the rear tray. It will be nice.

BTW which HU are you having. It should not turn out to be a weak link.

so finally i have decided to go with polk db691 ill change my tray along and have 4 db691, as for arun i dunno why bt i somehw like the basstube mre thn the subs i guess they give mre punch then the subs so i am planning to keep the tube and install 2 jbl subs in an encloser and attach all three to a mono and my 4 chnl amp will drive my 4 speakers and ill also put dynamat on the doors bt the i wanted to ask is the base tube bettr than the subs in providing the punch and the bass and ya there is no problem of space at the rear and i also have a company fitted front components so shud i stick with them and use 4 rear speakers or shud i go with two rear speakers and install new components at the frnt.........

cheerss!!!!

I guess it is a true SPL system that you are looking at. Am I right.

Bass tube/sealed/ported/band pass etc... : It all depends on one's personal listening preferences. Personal opinion - I would prefer 1 or more subs in a sealed enclosure rather than a bass tube. Coz tube tends to get boomier.
The subs should be fed properly also.

4 ovals at the rear Surprised I dont actually see the need for it.

Bass tube and 2 sealed subs. It will give you a bad sound IMO.

Focals are higher speakers than tha db series of Polk. db 691 would cost around 4-4.5k.

If you are planning to add multiple subs then serious damping needs to be done. Wiring should also be good.

HU means Head unit or simply the player. BTW which is the player that you are currently having.

All in all, this should be done slow and steady. Hope you have that much patience.

@Chaitanya: He has meant that the doors panels are to be damped. Dynamat is a brand for damping material.
