12kmpl appears normal. What was the mileage earlier? Has it changed drastically? A variation between 10-12kmpl can be expected depending on AC use, city driving conditions and so on.

For a start, if track the mileage for a consistent pattern. Between two tank-full refills maintain the same driving style (if you use AC considerably then don't stop using it completely or less than 80%). This will give you one set of mileage figures. Next change the driving pattern - use less AC and then see the mileage for a couple of refuellings. You will note that the two sets of mileage reading will be different. In the example I gave the latter style will give greater mileage. However within each set there will be a variation, so you will have to be patient and take multiple mileage measurements for each set, and arrive at the average.

Thank you Rohit, i will try your suggestions and get back to you. I use 50% AC and maintain the RPM always between 2000 to 3000 only !!

If its of any help, maintain a spreadsheet on which you track how much fuel you put, on what date and what was the odometer (or tripmeter) reading. You can have a formula to calculate the min, max & avg of the set of data you collect. This will give you an idea of what the car's returning over a period of time.

Satish, You have made me a happy man. Till today, with about 13kmpl, I had not heard about an indica with worse mileage than mine

That apart, what I've heard is , not to acelerate too quickly. press the acelerator pedal gradually
