I want to buy a utility vehicle for my family of 6 adults. I personally like Mahindra scorpio for its muscular and rugged look. However, generally people advice to go for toyota innova.

Now I am confused as people say Innova is a good performer, easy to maintain and a spacious vehicle. If this is true, then i would not like to create a hole in my pocket just for the sake of looks.

We brothers are drive enthusiasts and like to take the vehicle offroad/hill often. We currently maintain Accent and have drove it back from Kashmir. We were freuently doing 160-170 on the highway across Ambala.

Our next destnations in new vehicle would be Chardham yatra for our parents and leh. Please advice me to choose the vehicle on count of maintenance cost, vehicle performance etc.

Thank you

Hi Prashant.

Welcome to carwale. for off roading the scorpio will better option compared to the innova. Innova is basically a MUV which is suitable for big families. It is best suited for city traffic. For seating you will find the innova better than the scorpio. Innova also has better ride quality and a refined engine. You can get better FE from the innova when compared to the scorpio. Features in the scorpio are much more than the innova. So if there is not too much off roading involved better opt for the innova else the scorpio is the one to buy

To add: If there isn't any offroading involved then Innova is the best choice. It lacks in ground clearance dept.

Hi Prashant,

If you are offroading with six adults, which means at least two people are sitting in the last row. Now Scorpio is not at all comfortable in the last row, added to the fact the rough roads and bumps, the last row would be a nightmare.

On the contrary Innova has a very comfortable last row. The ground clearance i feel is quite sufficiant.

Iam driving Innova for the last 42 months, have driven 45k. Maintinence wise there no issues. Appox cost of running/servicing is around 0.50 Paise per Km.

So my money is surelly on Innova as there is a "feel good factor" for Toyota as compared to Mahindra.

Thank you Centaur, Ami, Uneet for enlightening me over the subject and sharing your experiences. It is very clear now that Innova has better ride quality than Scorpio and brand name of Toyota after it.

However, after considering all the factors, I have decided to go for Mhawk 2.2L 120bhp Mahindra Scorpio because:

1)      Scorpio is cheaper by Rs 3 lacs. (Scorpo SLE & Innova 2.5 VX)

2)      Innova is very common and looks outdated in delhi despite of its lookover. Whereas, new black Scorpio looks fresh and funky.

3)      Maintenance cost looks pretty much same for both the vehicles appr. 50 paisa per km. I heard, at times spare parts of Scorpio are cheaper than even Maruti.

4)      Scorpio has better ground clearance

I will wait for your response before booking the vehicle. Please let me know if I am making a blunder by choosing Scorpio over Innova.

I am getting a modern stylish jeep (Scorpio) fully loaded for Rs 9 lacs on road.

As mentioned the sorpio is loaded wit features as compared to the innova and to top it, it is cheaper as well. But the ride quality in toyota cannot be matched by the scorpio. If you do more off roading than city driving then scorpio is the one else prefer the innove. Personally I too like the scorpio over the innova

@Prashant -- After 4 yrs and a usage between 60k - 70k, you will surelly realize the difference between both the cars. Innova would still be better drive while scorpio would be a little rugged.

I still feel that that Scorpio 2.2 Mhawk engine is very good. I still remember chasing Scorpio on my Innova at Delhi Chandigarh highway! Both the cars were cruising around 150!

But if i have to see the overall comfort than scorpio will not be any match to it.

Decision is all yours.

Hello Robert. The top version of Innova petrol impressed me. The elegant interiors coupled with last seat edge forced me to change last minute decision and buy Innova petrol 2.0 V. The car is superb. If you love your vehicle go for Innova.

1) Top version is fully loaded with awesome interiors and decent exteriors.

2) Last seat split and fold is just perfect for our use. I found it better than Scorpio. Scorpio last seat does not fold and twist so well.

3) The car has superb pickup and petrol version does not feel so heavy. I drove Innova on Agra delhi hghway and i almost touched 175 km per hour. I was cruising way ahead of scorpio, Ford endeavour, Innova diesel.

4) The A/c is chiller. It cools vehicle in less that 4 minutes and n 10 mnutes beyond resistance. for person like me who finds heat intolerable innova's cooling is best.

5) On mileage part it disappointed us. The car is consuming 1 ltr petrol for 10 km in city so we expected at least 12-13 for highway. To our surprse the petrol tank light flashed after 400 km of drive i.e about 9 km per ltr on round trip and 11 km on hghway drive. (round trip consists 100 km of city drive in Agra)

6) Another impressive part of innova is the turning radious. If i am not wrong, it requires less road to take a u-turn than my little maruti 800. I am yet to ensure this though.

7) I found the ground clearance is just enough. I took the bharatpur mathura road on way back to delhi. I got stuck at a big bump of road due to construction work. While other cars crossed the bump through field alongside, I tested the Innova on the bump but, it got stuck. 1 passenger from front seat had to step down and i was able to cross the bump.

All in all Scorpo is a good car and was my personal choice. However Innova has a strong performing engine and i found t reliable and mental piece. Please let me know if you need anythng else.
