Sachi,

If you are ready to compromise on size/weight, I think S5 IS is better choice. However, in terms of picture quality and speed, Canon's entire consumer range is almost similar. S5 IS would be a fraction of a second faster than IXUS. To me the difference is almost negligible. Yes, the difference between a digicam and SLR is definitely huge. Same is the case with picture quality as well. IXUS will produce as good pictures as S5 IS. But again S5 IS has awesome zoom range which is really a very big advantage.

I didn't say S5 IS is slow because of AA batteries. I said it may be. To be very frank I am a bit paranoid about digital cameras running on AA batteries. I have too many around and I always hear complains about flash or LCD consuming more power and making the battery performance mediocre or performance degradation. I have S5 IS, SX1 IS, A720IS around and the owners keep cribbing about batteries all the time.

I have used a Sony DSC T5 in the past. The T-series is breathtakingly good-looking and produces pictures that look good (especially colourful scenes) but I find Canon picture quality way better. I have no clue about SX110 IS. In my opinion S5 IS should be better VFM.

My conclusion: Buy S5 IS for 12x zoom, tiltable LCD, handling. Buy IXUS 950 IS for ultra-compact design, battery pack, movie quality (not sure if S5 IS is equally good), price.

If you are not sure, go visit Croma, feel both the cameras. Pick the one you are more comfortable with.

Ban/Prasad,

After lots of confusion, today i visited a BestBuy showroom in NY and felt couple of cameras like Sony T900, Nikon L100, Canon SX110 IS, Sony Cyber shot DSC H50 and some compact Canon's as well. Here are some of the comments.

Sony T900 is extremely compact - i was astonished to see that - way too compact??

Mini SLR's like Nikon L100, Sony H50 are also quite big in size and would not be accomodated in a pouch. Canon PowerShot S5 IS was not available, i guess even that will be of same size.

So... may be am moving away from S5 IS   One thing tat i find intersting with this types are the Tiltable LCD's. High zoom is not much required in day to day usage.

Now i think i'll go with a Compact one itself. After reading earlier posts, am convinced that Canon is better than Sony T series. So guys.. please suggest me a model in Canon.

Canon IXUS 950 IS(PowerShot SD850 IS) - 2yrs old model - might get for cheaper deal around $220.

Any other models that you would suggest, am not too concerned about Video quality. Any newer models with much better performance at around similar price range??

One more question: If we can get the IXUS 95 for 12k in india, why is it $220 here? doesnt look worthy.

Thanks a lot for your responses.

-Sachi

Hey Sachin,As u from Bangalore,i would advice you to visit Canon Lounge Showroom. Please go there & feel the products, take pictures, printouts.U can;y buy canon products. But it will give real time feel of the size, handling of the canon cameras.

When i saw Ixus 95IS first time,i fell in love.I found them to just too much beautiful.

I recently clicked a photograph & made  a poster out of it from Zoomin.com (20*24).The ouptut is unbelievable.

You can see IXUS 100IS.It has HD movie recording.

Also, iwa seager to get the latest procesor built by canon seeing in terms of future.

Hence went on with Digic4 in IXUS 95IS.

Hi,

In the mini-SLR range, the Nikons and the Sonys are bulky - If you want a compact big zoom stuff, the Panasonic range is good.

But now that you have tilted towards a compact camera, I would suggest the Canon IXUS 95 - It has the right lens with the right amount of pixels - Anything more will result in a noisy image.

K Prasad

Hi all,

The problem that i am facing now is, i am not able to find Canon PowerShot SD850 IS (IXUS 95 IS) in any of the showroom or even on online shopping. Since it was launched 2yrs back, that might be the reason, it is phased out here in US.

Can you help me finding any other alternative within my budget, which is as VFM as IXUS 95 IS or is it worth buying the same after coming back to Bangalore?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have finalized on SD1200 IS. Please let me know, what all accessories i need to buy.

1. Memory card - I believe 4GB is enough for my usage. Which brand do i go for and what would be its cost?

2. Card reader - Please mention brand and cost.
3. Lens Cleaner - Is it a necessary tool?
4. Pouch to carry - Brand and avg cost.

One point i would like to get clarified is, Prasad was speaking about China model and Japanese model. Do we have Canon 1200IS in both these makes? hw to differentiate?

Thanks,

Go to any store and check the label on the equipment - It would be clearly mentioned on the equipment as "Made In Japan" / "Made in China" - There are also Malaysian and Singapre makes which while not as good as the Japanese one, are not as bad as the Chinese ones.
