I am not sure how many of you have faced this but one of the most common problem in Honda City is with its Air Conditioning system. I own Honda City 1.3Exi for past 7+ years and because I live in B'lore I typically use A/C only 3-4 months in a year only. What I have found is that its A/C system typically starts giving problem after 40K miles (makes noise). When you show it to dealer at the time of service they will typically play it down saying it is just a bearing noise and you need to replace the entire compressor which will cost you typically Rs. 40K so you will typically choose no to do anything and go on. Most of the MNC cars in India uses SANDEN A/C system http://www.sanden.com/ and the one used in Honda City typically requires following maintenance

    - Belt Tension check
    - Oil balance check for AC compressor
    - Compressor Clutch and clutch bearing check
    - Refrigent pressure check
Typically the Service dealer will never do this even when you give your car for service but this is what is recommanded by AC Manufacturer. Also after 40K KMs the AC compressor bearings needs replacement which typically cost very little Rs300-600 + labour - but this is also never done by service dealer because it is more lucarative for them to replace the entire compressor. As a result your AC compressor will get completely breakdown because the bearing problems will lead to other serious damage in the AC compressor and finally it will get completly jammed and replacement is the only option.
I have also found that Honda service dealer will charge you Rs 40K for the compressor which is typically available in market at Rs. 13K. I know a shop in Bangalore where you can get this done at max Rs 15K inclusive of everything. To me this is cheating the customer who really trust Honda and its quality.
I have no other complain about the car. Honda is really a great car but its service cost is really high and its service dealers are really really bad - I have always done service at one autorised service dealer only but I have always found that if you are not careful enough they will always try to over charge you on many things that are really not needed. One big issue I find with Honda is its service dealer network - even though Honda cars are selling very well they have very few service dealers in city and so it gives opprtunity to existing service dealer to charge and treat their customers which every way they want.
With this experince I am thinking twice whether I should buy my next car as Honda or should I look for some other cars. I have heard that other MNC car companies are really improving on their service network and so I am thinking of looking at other options where cost of ownership (maintenace, spares etc..) is much lower.
I have already complained about this in writing as well as over phone to Honda dealership as well as Honda- SEIL-India but have heard back only from delaer saying it is not our problem and there is NO RESPONSE on this from Honda SEIL-India.
if you want more information about this please feel free to contact me at my e-mail iD.

This seems to be the trend with all dealers(including Honda).

The spare would be much costlier at the dealer than at the outside.

Soory to hear about your story.

The trend is more with Honda & the like who have smaller network / no competition locally (single dealer).

Please keep writing/sharing your experience - also on your decision about buying the new car.  Thanks.

I got it fixed from a place called Wecool in Bangalore Ph: 080-25363147/25364270. Not sure if you are in B'lore. The AC compressor is available at Poorvi AirCon,080-41239990.

Let me know if this helps you fix the problem,

Honda typically charges thrice the going rate for anything and everything.

Problem is that only they (dealerships/ASC) have the expertise to handle the car problems effectively. I have enquired in the local market and very few, if any of the garages have any means to come even close to ASCs. All my thoughts about saving money and stiffing Honda evaporate when the mechanic from the local garage opens up the hood and gingerly pokes around. To me it appears he tries to learn from your problem description than offer help rightaway.

So Honda customers are caught between a rock and a hard place, as far as repairs and maintenance is concerned. Frown

PS: Oh yes, the Honda helpline is for your psychological well-being, rather than real solutions. It's a high-tech punch-me bag, nothing more. I doubt if it has any means to generate actions at Honda. Never came across an example where one has complained and something has MOVED in Honda wrt the complaint!

Rajesh,

All multinational car companies are doing the same in India. But the same may not be true in other contries. If you look at why Honda is very successful in US is mainly because of its high quality, low maintenance cost and high resale value. I don't think same will be true in India Honda.

I had called up Honda helpline but as you mentioned it is just punch bag. Infact I was really amazed about how they tried to even fool me to make me believe that the whole problem was my problem and they gave me overall estimates of Rs 70K for the complete repair. My car is 8 Yr old and I am not a fool to pay for Rs. 70K for a repair where actual cost could be just Rs 15K and car resale value is Rs 2.5L only. I think this where it does not workout from the economy point of view. Upto first 3-4 years you will feel OK to get it repaired at Honda Dealership and after that only you will start to realize that they are over charging you. If you observe carefully when you give your car for service you will find very few cars that may be 5+ yr old coming for repair at Honda delership.

Your argument about other repir shop not doing good enough job may not be 100% correct. It is matter of finding right repair shop - who has latest equiments and good mechanics. I have found one in B'lore who is Maruti Autorized repair shop and he has done a very decent job.

If you are not in B'lore you may want to call up the B'lore # and ask him about a shop in Noida/Delhi or other cities. He mentioned to me that he buys these from someone in Delhi and so I assume original person importing these must me in Delhi.

Facing the same problem with my Honda City. The local garage has offered to fix compressor for Rs 11000 with bill. Not sure if he can be trusted. Can anyone suggest a good place in Delhi NCR for the same.

Bingo, Take a Saturday off, go visit the Old Delhi auto parts market. (It is around Hamilton road/GPO area, after crossing the railway underbridge if you go from Lal Quila side. There are dozons of shops offering spares and they will give you the right price, if you enquire around. That will solve your compressor sourcing problem. Then catch hold of a good private garage (Sector 10 Noida has some good garages that do real grunt work, as opposed to the fluff in Sector 16, but where are you from in NCR?) The project should not be all that painful if you are a bit enterprising. I know, you tried, but right places are important.
