relatively easier, and more cost-effective option is locating an engine which is more powerful than the stock Astra's, preferably a newer engine with a high power/weight ratio. Then things will get interesting.

Also performance upgrades is understandably a high-margin area and small enhancements are also priced high, so totally one can end up spending as much as an engine costs.

Trying to upgrade the same engine will be like flogging a dead (or dying) horse. Not much advantage, and a lot of factors to care about, otherwise it can go totally wrong.

We have done our share of research and the Astra parts are way to expensive and rare. Its been disappointing. We are constantly running out of our stack of determination, enthusiasm and patience. This is beginning to look like a dead end project. We will certainly carry on till we run out of interest. I'm afraid it will be very soon. So a sad and disappointing  end to an exciting projectCry

Will start my Esteem project very soon. Will get back to you guys for help then. Cheers!!

Hi are you sure that it is with single point injection? cos after year 2000 astra too came with MPFI engine with fair amount of power.also as far as i know club always came with MPFI engine as for modification simple will be to go for a free flow exhaust & triphase module. you can get those things from VIPER in mumbai he will also help you as what kind of power do you need in free flow exhaust mid,low or high
