So the "engine revving sound" was actually the grinding noise of gears refusing to engage? I assume that Dilip meant that the mechanic could not engage the gears when the engine was on, but was able to do so with engine off. Looks like a problem with the synchromesh. Good that the gearbox is being changed under warranty. Is this the Kappa i10? I did hear about gearbox problems in the early versions of the 1.1 i10 which were supposedly sorted out and Hyundai apparently recalled a batch of i10's and replaced the gearbox.

This is indeed surprising and not expected from Hyundai. My nine-year old Santro still has butter-smooth gear shift at 96500 kms, except that the reverse gear baulks at times.

I personally feel that the issue is not a common problem with i10 - just a bad luck in your case & a few others referred by Binoy.

Extended warranty is generally preferred in cases where the run/usage is high.  However, you can go for it for peace of mind.

Edit: Didn't notice Srinivasan's post while typing/posting mine.

Yes, it shoud not reoccur in all probability.  Do keep us posted with the developments/experiences once the gear box is replaced. Thanks.

Hi All

The aforementioned problem was rectified by the Hyundai team. The problem was not with the gear box but with the clutch plate. Hence he had to replace the clutch plate assembly.The car is now functioning smoothly.Thanks for the help guys.

@Dilip,

Be relaxed. Its a manufacturing defect, which even the Ferraris can't avoid. The gearbox issue is solved, luckily at no cost. So you don't have to worry. They won't repair the box, they should change it.

I tried this and I had understeer, I tried that and I had oversteer, at the end of the corner I just ran out of talent!
