This is the BMW Isetta, popularly known as the 'Bubble car'. Post the second world war, germany needed cheap transportation and manufacturers like BMW and Messerschmitt (who supplied everything from engines, trucks, bikes to planes) turned to provide the German people with these small vehicles - mostly running on small petrol motorcycle engines. The Messerchmitt is an equally rare automobile and was completely designed in house in germany, whereas the Isetta from BMW has its design origins in Italy.

Starting as an Italian car, the Isetta went almost all the way round the western hemisphere. Until, BMW purchased the rights in 1955 and made the Isetta the icon it was trying to become. The thing grew from its 250cc two-stroke engine to the Isetta 600, which had a twin-cylinder 582cc engine.
